The Conflict Of Motherhood, Jaime L. Reiser

These images represent the sentimental aspect of motherhood while capturing the harsh reality of the changes occurring within the female body during a really crucial time. While the baby is growing there is immense conflict and challenges the motherly body must overcome and adapt to in order to successfully carry to term and bear a child. The pressure of the growing uterus and moving baby creates ups and downs in multiple organ systems that in turn not only affect the reproductive system of a woman but every fiber of her being. The journey of motherhood is so much bigger than …

As I near the last couple of months of third-year clinical rotations in medical school, this short letter represents my own reflection on the experiences this year that have shaped me.

During your third year of medical school, every month you may find yourself in a completely new environment. These were some of the thoughts that kept me grounded and helped me better integrate myself into each of these new environments.

The Battle Of The First-Year Medical Student, Kimberly A. Kluglein Oct 2022

The Battle Of The First-Year Medical Student, Kimberly A. Kluglein

be Still

I wrote this poem to reflect the way I believe a lot of first-year medical students feel. The internal conflict that arises within ourselves. I personally have doubted whether I am good enough to be where I am today and I know I am not alone in that feeling. A million people could tell you that you are good enough, but it doesn't matter unless you believe that for yourself. I think it is important to take time to reflect and remember even when it is difficult, that you can do it, and that you are worthy.

Memory And Attention While Scuba Diving At Shallow And Deep Depths: An Open Water Study, Leanne Boucher, Joshua Feingold, Kelly Concannon, Stephanie Talavera, Jaime Tartar, W. Matthew Collins

Journal for Sports Neuroscience

SCUBA diving requires a high level of cognitive functioning, however, many divers anecdotally report poor memory and attentional skills while underwater. Few studies have documented cognitive deficits resulting from an open-water dive. Here, 23 divers completed both shallow (8 m) and deep (28 m) dives over two days in the open-water. The order of the dives was counterbalanced across participants. While at depth, they completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory to assess anxiety levels, learned and were tested on a list of 36 words, and completed the trail making task (TMT) to assess executive functioning. They also gave saliva samples to …

Occupational Therapy Students' Perceptions Of Their Own Notetaking, Marie-Christine Potvin, Monique C. Chabot, Kathleen Carr

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Notetaking is a critical skill for higher-level thinking and information integration in graduate students, including occupational therapy students. Though there is a growing body of literature about notetaking modalities, strategies utilized, and self-perceptions of skills in college students, studies about occupational therapy (OT) students’ notetaking preferences have been absent from the literature. This study examines how OT students take notes and their perceptions of their notes. Method: This descriptive study of students in a Master of Occupational Therapy program (n=57) completed the Notetaking Abilities and Strategies of University Students (NASUS) questionnaire which captures the constructs of notetaking methods, reasons …

Purpose: Various professions require employees to be able to detect different shades of color accurately when visually reading test results with colorimetric end points. To prepare health science students to better meet this requirement, a screening test for color vision deficiency (CVD) was administered to detect any major or minor errors as part of the undergraduate student experience. Method: Screening for color vision deficiency was administered using the Farnsworth D-15 Color Vision Test. Students completed the test and their results were scored and interpreted at the time of completion. Results: Students (n=85) from nine different health science programs completed …

Purpose: Mounting evidence supports the use of cognitive and behavioral techniques as part of physical therapist practice. These methods are used within a physical therapist’s multimodal treatment approach for the management of pain and to facilitate health behavior change. There is a multitude of evidence-based cognitive behavioral techniques to choose from including newer approaches based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Yet few studies have examined physical therapists’ perceptions to learning and implementing ACT into clinical practice. The purpose of this manuscript is to present a clinical perspective of physical therapists learning about and incorporating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in clinical …
