Mental Health Intervention In The Workplace Amidst The Covid-19 Pandemic, Tayarka Kendrick, James B. Artley, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba

HCBE Faculty Articles

The purpose of this project is to examine why the mental health of employees should be prioritized in the workplace. Most employees have likely experienced a visible illness or injury at some point during their careers. It is easier to identify these physical ailments that may adversely affect an employee's performance at work, such as a broken leg or the common cold. However, there are conditions that are much less visible that negatively impact employees every day, and mental health is one of them. A person's mental health is a significant factor in their work life that should not be …

Chronic Disease Self-Management Of Post-Acute Sequelae Of Covid-19 Among Older Adults: A Mixed-Methods Analysis., Kamilah Thomas-Purcell, Rosemary Davenport, Victoria Ayala, Donrie Purcell, Raymond L. Ownby

HPD Articles

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 20-30% of individuals who contract acute coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infection develop longer term complications of their initial infection, referred to as Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC). PASC is characterized by chronic, varying symptomatology.

METHODS: Using a mixed methods study design, we aimed to gain insight into individuals' experience with PASC, including cognitive issues, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. We explored whether our previously developed application (app), aimed at improving self-management skills among individuals with chronic diseases, is relevant for individuals with PASC and gained information to adapt the app for individuals with PASC. The study included 19 individuals, …

Therapeutic Effects Of Medicinal Mushrooms On Gastric, Breast, And Colorectal Cancer: A Scoping Review., Amit Dan, Robyn Swain, Seigna Belonce, Robin J. Jacobs

HPD Articles

Cancer is the leading cause of mortality globally. With anticancer medications causing severe adverse effects, understanding the role of alternative and efficacious anticancer treatments with minimal or no side effects can be beneficial. Edible mushrooms have been associated with certain health benefits and exhibit a broad range of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating activities. The anticancer potential of different mushrooms is now being tested. The goal of this scoping review was to discuss the most recent and available evidence on the therapeutic uses of medicinal mushrooms in cancer treatment, specifically those cancers with some of the highest mortality rates …

Bilateral Concurrent Benign Phyllodes Tumor In A 43-Year-Old Female: A Case Report., Andres Francisco, Jennifer Beniquez Martir, Jesus E. Guarecuco Castillo, Rana El-Tawil, Mohammed M. Masri

HPD Articles

Phyllodes tumor is considered a rare form of breast tissue neoplasm that presents as a rapidly growing painless mass. This neoplasm is classified as benign, borderline, or malignant and standard treatment consists of surgical excision with clear margins. The vast majority of reported cases have described the unilateral presentation of this tumor, making bilateral presentation a rare find. Our case describes a 43-year-old Hispanic woman with a history of fibroadenomas who was found to have concurrent benign bilateral phyllodes tumors.

Methodological Guidelines For Focus Groups With Children From Developing Regions, María J. Peñaherrera-Vélez, Angélica Ochoa Avilés Phd, Nancy Arpi, Elisabeth Rodas, Gabriela Zúñiga, Elena Jerves

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative research with children has gained recognition in recent years. Nevertheless, special considerations should be analyzed before conducting focus groups with children from developing countries where methodological guidelines are scarce. This article provides methodological guidelines for conducting focus groups with children from developing countries based on an extensive literature review and our experience in urban and rural areas in Ecuador. Peculiarities of urban and rural contexts are highlighted, and child-friendly strategies are proposed. We conclude that focus groups can be conducted successfully with urban and rural children from low-and-middle-income countries if their specific circumstances, such as language and cultural diversity, …

Myocardial Infarction Signs And Symptoms: Females Vs. Males., Kyle J. Schulte, Harvey N. Mayrovitz Apr 2023

Myocardial Infarction Signs And Symptoms: Females Vs. Males., Kyle J. Schulte, Harvey N. Mayrovitz

HPD Articles

Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of females in the United States today, and myocardial infarction (MI) plays a role in many of these deaths. Females also present with more "atypical" symptoms than males and appear to have differences in pathophysiology underlying their MIs. Despite both differences in symptomology and pathophysiology being present in females versus males, a possible link between the two has not been studied extensively. In this systematic review, we analyzed studies examining differences in symptoms and pathophysiology of MI in females and males and evaluated possible links between the two. A search was performed for …

Giant Mesenchymal Hepatic Hamartomas With Adrenal Involvement Precipitating Respiratory Failure: A Myxomatous Mystery In A Three-Month-Old., Ali Yasback, Abid Ulhaque, Tushar Chandra

HPD Articles

The combination of placental mesenchymal dysplasia and hepatic mesenchymal hamartomas is an extremely rare finding. We present the case of a three-month-old female born at 35 weeks gestation with a history of placental mesenchymal dysplasia who presented with non-bilious, non-bloody emesis, and episodes of respiratory distress due to multiple enlarging abdominal cystic lesions. The patient's presentation was unique due to both liver and adrenal solid and cystic lesions. After extensive imaging and multiple biopsies, expert interpretation of biopsy tissue revealed hepatic mesenchymal hamartoma within the liver and the adrenal gland. To our knowledge, this is one of the few documented …

The Factors Associated With Confidence In Using The Internet To Access Health Information: Cross-Sectional Data Analysis., Kasi Lou Van Heel, Anna Nelson, Daniel Handysides, Huma Shah

HPD Articles

BACKGROUND: Confidence in health information access is a measure of the perceived ability to obtain health information. One's beliefs or perceived ability to access health information is particularly important in understanding trends in health care access. Previous literature has found that access to health information is lowest among society's most vulnerable population groups. These groups include older, less educated, and low-income populations. While health confidence has previously been used as a scale to measure health outcomes, additional research is needed describing the demographic factors associated with users' confidence in health information access. This may be a key component of health …
