Understanding Organ Donation Messaging: A Qualitative Inquiry, Rebecca K. Britt, Amy A. Ritchart
Understanding Organ Donation Messaging: A Qualitative Inquiry, Rebecca K. Britt, Amy A. Ritchart
The Qualitative Report
Promoting health communication about organ donation remains a crucial objective within Native American communities. The goals of the current study were to communicate with young adult Native Americans about the Organ Donation Willingness Model (ODWM; Horton & Horton, 1991) to gain their responses to materials from campaigns about donation strategies tailored to Native American communities. Six focus groups were conducted with a total of 31 participants. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2019, 2022) and following Smith’s guidelines (2008), which include showing deep respect for the group participants, conducting the study in a face-to-face setting, and being …

The relevance of social media platforms in our daily lives is intensifying. Social media have become a "showcase" for our life experiences. In addition, they represent a range of dimensions of our status in the virtual and actual social world. These two factors trigger people to construct particular identities to thrive in dual social ecosystems. Subsequently, Tiktok's prominence as a current trending social media platform with a total of 500 million users globally transforms its function from a communication medium to a medium for gaining social capital. This phenomenon notably influences Indonesian society, with people being heavily invested in that …

Best Practices For Synchronous Online Teaching: A Framework To Support Engagement And Inclusion, Amy Sugar, Sue Bauer, Rohan Jowallah
FDLA Journal
The last two decades have seen an increasingly rapid advancement in the landscape of technology. While these advancements enhanced the quality of education, the COVID-19 pandemic forced institutions to rapidly transition to synchronous online teaching and learning. This transition was not often done within a sound pedagogical process. According to De Leon (2022), in many cases Covid negatively affected students’ development. The writer goes on to suggest that social, mental health, and instructional issues may have contributed to the deficit in learning currently being explored by many academics. Hence, we must create sound approaches for teaching and learning online. As …

Screen Fatigue and how AI can Assist
As a society, we are all too aware of the sudden and significant evolution of the higher education environment; classrooms that once consisted of only desks, chairs, and chalkboards in a brick-and-mortar auditorium have now largely become part of the technological landscape. We are also frequently reminded of the negative consequences of the online learning format - obesity, sleep problems, chronic neck and back issues, and "Zoom fatigue," among others. However, another relatively new "existence" now contributes to the distance learning format - Artificial Intelligence or “AI.”
In addition to its academic applications, …

The Future Of Nursing Leadership: Incorporating E-Learned Artificial Intelligence (Ai) Pathways With A Precautionary Focus On Patient-Centered-Care, Jamie Anne Marcus Dr., Bonnette Villalba Webb
FDLA Journal
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a data-driven mathematical process that incorporates machine-based-logic, usually in the form of algorithms. Education, training, and competencies are now conducted through virtual reality, robotics, simulation, and technology learning-based-platforms by healthcare organizations. This represents a significant change in the future of nursing practice. The adaptability of technology-based-learning platforms can impact the quality and efficiency of learning for some of the workforce population. Nurses' perception of technology and AI-driven nursing practice may vary based on generational orientation and can be a potential barrier to learning, practicing, and adaptability of this framework. The forging of well-trained resilient nurse leaders …

Global Implications Of Covid-19 On Education And Research In Healthcare And Stem: Analysis Of Case Studies, Yumna Indorewala, Santanu De
FDLA Journal
The zoonotic novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2 posed major threats to the world’s economy, social development, and public health. Education and research in STEM and healthcare were no exceptions to the global implications of the Coronavirus Infectious Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Social distancing guidelines were initially recommended to refrain from in-person operations for preventing the transmission of the virus. As academic organizations implemented multifarious methods to effectively transition to remote/online or hybrid educational formats, COVID-19 necessitated designing, adopting, as well as evaluating the efficacy of new instructional approaches, especially for disciplines that require active, experiential learning such as healthcare and STEM. These …

Reducing The Gap: A Phenomenological Study Of Student-Faculty Interaction Experiences Of International Students In Korea, Natalie Thibault
Reducing The Gap: A Phenomenological Study Of Student-Faculty Interaction Experiences Of International Students In Korea, Natalie Thibault
The Qualitative Report
This phenomenological study explored lived experiences of student-faculty interactions of undergraduate international students in Korea, in a higher education context where direct contacts between professors and students are infrequent. Guided by Astin’s theory of student involvement, the study investigated students’ experiences of direct interaction with faculty members, inside and outside the classroom. Seventeen foreign students participated in semi-structured interviews, during which they shared experiences, recollections, and perceptions of direct interactions with professors. Participants explained how certain factors, such as professor demographics, language proficiency or means of instruction, influenced the quality and frequency of interactions. They also expressed a clear desire …

Humanizing The Research Process: Collaborative Reflections On Prioritizing Research Participants’ Agency, Trust, And Connection, Anne E. Pezalla, Alyssa Scott, Lex Nappa, Diane Hsieh
The Qualitative Report
All research is a social construction. In this paper, we work to illuminate those moments of co-constructed meaning by taking readers on a “behind the scenes” tour of a collaborative research project that explored educator relationships. We describe our priorities in and care for participant recruitment and scheduling, our post-hoc reflections on the differences in emotional tenor between interviews and focus groups, and our own roles and positionalities within the data collection and analysis process. Action-items are recommended for other group-based qualitative studies to humanize the process of research and prioritize moments of agency, trust, and connection among participants.

Understanding The Relationship Between [Atp], Growth Rate, And Inoculum Effect In Β-Lactamase Producing Bacteria, Ariane R. Kalifa
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
2.8 million Americans are infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria on an annual basis, leading to increased mortality and morbidity. With the incidence of infection due to antibiotic-resistant bacteria on the rise, it is critical to understand the mechanisms bacteria use to resist antibiotics. The inoculum effect (IE) is a phenomenon that has been observed for many antibiotics and bacterial species. In IE, the density of the bacterial population determines the minimum inhibitory concentration of the antibiotic (MIC) of an antibiotic; as the density of the bacterial population increases, the MIC increases. IE is highly prevalent in bacteria that express β-lactamases where …
