The Learner-Centered Syllabus: From Theory To Practice In Allied Health Education, Kimberly S. Peer, Malissa Martin
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
The national focus in higher education in shifting from the instructional to the learning paradigm where the emphasis on student-centered learning is of paramount importance. Instructional paradigms focus on “providing instruction” with distinct emphasis on the role of the teacher. Under this structure, students are typically passive listeners and the instructor is the center of teaching and instruction. The learning paradigm, on the other hand, focuses on the outcomes of the educational process thereby “facilitating learning”. The role of the student is one of an active participant who is encouraged to become engaged in the learning process through various interactive …

The number, chromosomal distribution, and insertional polymorphisms of endogenous feline leukemia viruses (enFeLVs) were determined in four domestic cats (Burmese, Egyptian Mau, Persian, and nonbreed) using fluorescent in situ hybridization and radiation hybrid mapping. Twenty-nine distinct enFeLV loci were detected across 12 of the 18 autosomes. Each cat carried enFeLV at only 9 to 16 of the loci, and many loci were heterozygous for presence of the provirus. Thus, an average of 19 autosomal copies of enFeLV were present per cat diploid genome. Only five of the autosomal enFeLV sites were present in all four cats, and at only one …

The extent and patterns of linkage disequilibrium (LD) determine the feasibility of association studies to map genes that underlie complex traits. Here we present a comparison of the patterns of LD across four major human populations (African-American, Caucasian, Chinese, and Japanese) with a high-resolution single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) map covering almost the entire length of chromosomes 6, 21, and 22. We constructed metric LD maps formulated such that the units measure the extent of useful LD for association mapping. LD reaches almost twice as far in chromosome 6 as in chromosomes 21 or 22, in agreement with their differences in recombination …
It's A Question Of Scholarship, Terra L. Smith
It's A Question Of Scholarship, Terra L. Smith
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Scholarship is the opportunity for advanced learning. The new paradigm of scholarship, in addition to research, assimilates teaching, service, and integration scholarships. Many allied health professional organizations reward a variety of scholarly efforts with continuing professional education units (CPEUs). The Commission on Dietetic Registration implemented a new CPEU category that promotes research at the preclusion of non-research types of scholarship. One of the most important educational benefits of non-research scholarship is opportunities for professional writing that also supports the goal of life-long learning encouraged by adult education theory. Allied health professions will benefit from a discussion of the criteria used …

Teacher Perceptions Of Multicultural Issues In School Settings, Danielle Martines
Teacher Perceptions Of Multicultural Issues In School Settings, Danielle Martines
The Qualitative Report
This study employed qualitative methods to analyze teacher's level of multicultural understanding and perceptions of cultural issues when discussing their culturally diverse students in the context of the consultation process. Three school psychologists in urban city high schools, engaged in audio-recorded consultation sessions with consultee-teachers who voluntarily sought services. Audio-recorded tapes of consultation sessions were transcribed and coded by two trained raters and qualitatively analyzed by co-researchers who recorded multicultural thematic issues as categories. Cultural themes and categories indicated that teachers demonstrated cultural awareness and sensitivity regarding their culturally diverse students, yet showed less developed cultural knowledge-base and skill levels. …
Maternal Postpartum Role Collapse As A Theory Of Postpartum Depression, Linda Clark Amankwaa
Maternal Postpartum Role Collapse As A Theory Of Postpartum Depression, Linda Clark Amankwaa
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the development of a theory of maternal postpartum role collapse. The influences of traditional role theory and symbolic interactionism are presented. The development of the maternal postpartum role collapse theory emerged from the study of postpartum depression among African-American women (Amankwaa, 2000). Major components of the theory of postpartum maternal role collapse consist of role stress, role strain, and finally role collapse. A discussion of the extension of role theory to role collapse as it is related to the postpartum mother is offered as an explanation of postpartum depression.
