Applying Qualitative Methods In Organizations: A Note For Industrial/Organizational Psychologists, Benjamin Osayawe Ehigie, Rebecca Ibhaguelo Ehigie Sep 2005

Applying Qualitative Methods In Organizations: A Note For Industrial/Organizational Psychologists, Benjamin Osayawe Ehigie, Rebecca Ibhaguelo Ehigie

The Qualitative Report

Early approach to research in industrial and organizational (I/O) psychology was oriented towards quantitative techniques as a result of influences from the social sciences. As the focus of I/O psychology expands from psychological test development to other personnel functions, there has been an inclusion of qualitative methods in I/O psychology practice. The present paper therefore examines how qualitative methods like observation, interviews, ethnography, focus group discussion, nominal group technique, Delphi method, and projective techniques can be used by I/O psychologists in organizational studies. It is believed that knowledge gained on the application s of these qualitative methods would enhance understanding …

Amish Teacher Dialogues With Teacher Educators: Research, Culture, And Voices Of Critique, Henry Zehr, Glenda Moss, Joe Nichols Sep 2005

Amish Teacher Dialogues With Teacher Educators: Research, Culture, And Voices Of Critique, Henry Zehr, Glenda Moss, Joe Nichols

The Qualitative Report

This dialogical project is framed with in critical inquiry methods to bring an Amish teacher’s voice to the fore front. Henry, an Amish middle school teacher, and two university teacher educators in northeastern Indiana collaboratively critiqued educational literature written about the Amish culture from the past 15 years. Building on critical ethnography and narrative methods, the authors used dialogue as a medium for inquiry. The intersubjective, collaborative project democratized the university researchers’ research role and allowed an Amish voice to gain a place in the academic field of research.

A Qualitative Examination Of Mothers' Resolution Or Non-Resolution Of Their Childrens' Disability Of Down Syndrome Or Autism Using A Cognitive Intervention, Denise M. Orme Sep 2005

A Qualitative Examination Of Mothers' Resolution Or Non-Resolution Of Their Childrens' Disability Of Down Syndrome Or Autism Using A Cognitive Intervention, Denise M. Orme

The Qualitative Report

Research has shown that the inability of some mothers to resolve their emotions when confronted with the birth of a child with a disability of cerebral palsy or epilepsy can put the child at greater risk for disruptions of attachment. This qualitative study examined mothers' emotional state of resolution or non-resolution of their children's disability of Down syndrome or autism, and mothers' perceptions of the use of a cognitive intervention. Grounded theory was used to analyze the interviews and the cognitive intervention. The results showed that in addition to the two major categories of resolution and non-resolution, a third major …

Phenomenologically Investigating Mediated Nature, Tony E. Adams Sep 2005

Phenomenologically Investigating Mediated Nature, Tony E. Adams

The Qualitative Report

During the summer of 2001 I worked as a bartender in Wyoming, two miles east of Yellowstone National Park. This opportunity provided me with unique experiences of “the wilderness” and as a result, allowed me to become aware of intricacies of living with in a primarily simulated and mass mediated culture, i.e., the United States. Following tenets of phenomenology, this paper investigates the simulated- and mass mediated-ness of society with specific focus on experiences with two nature environments: simulated-nature places (e.g., shopping malls, zoos ) and televised-nature representations (e.g., Crocodile Hunter, Jaws) .

Pathways To Attrition: A Qualitative Comparative Analysis Of Justifications For Police Designations Of Sexual Assault Complaints, Danielle M. Soulliere Sep 2005

Pathways To Attrition: A Qualitative Comparative Analysis Of Justifications For Police Designations Of Sexual Assault Complaints, Danielle M. Soulliere

The Qualitative Report

The present analysis is a reframing of an earlier study conducted by the author to compensate for perceived deficiencies in previous studies on police decisions in sexual assault complaints. Specifically, qualitative comparative analysis was employed at the micro-social level to reveal justification scenarios, employed by investigating officers, which resulted in attrition at the police level. It was found that police employed the legal model in justifying “unfounded” designations while police employed both legal and extralegal models in justifying designations of “departmental discretion.” Further rese arch, expanding the database through interview s and participant observation, is necessary to fully explore justification …

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles

The Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) was used to characterize physical and chemical properties of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed during ozonolysis of cycloalkenes and biogenic hydrocarbons and photooxidation of m-xylene. Comparison of mass and volume distributions from the AMS and differential mobility analyzers yielded estimates of “effective” density of the SOA in the range of 0.64−1.45 g/cm3, depending on the particular system. Increased contribution of the fragment at m/z 44, CO2+ ion fragment of oxygenated organics, and higher “Δ” values, based on ion series analysis of the mass spectra, in nucleation experiments …

A Study Of Pneumothorax Rates For Physician Assistants Inserting Central Venous Catheters At A Large Urban Hospital, Theresa Cox, Thomas Parish, Robert Zane Reasoner Jul 2005

A Study Of Pneumothorax Rates For Physician Assistants Inserting Central Venous Catheters At A Large Urban Hospital, Theresa Cox, Thomas Parish, Robert Zane Reasoner

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Physician Assistants (PAs) are frequently delegated the task of performing invasive procedures. While there is a nearly 40 year record of PAs performing procedures of various types, limited published information is available that verifies the safety of delegating these medical responsibilities. As the scope of practice expands for the PA profession, research data will be necessary to document the safety and effectiveness of PAs performing invasive procedures. This prospectivestudy followed 9 PAs inserting central venous catheter (CVC) lines in pulmonary critical care and cardiothoracic surgery settings in a large urban hospital from June 1, 2002 through December 1, 2002. Each …

A Review Of Pharmacological And Educational Approaches For Tobacco Cessation, Angela L. Monson, John A. Romas Jul 2005

A Review Of Pharmacological And Educational Approaches For Tobacco Cessation, Angela L. Monson, John A. Romas

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Assisting patients to quit smoking continues to be critical for all health care providers as the Surgeon General’s report in 2004 reported a significant increase in the number of diseases caused by smoking. Awareness of the extreme addictiveness of nicotine may help health care providers increase empathy for patients attempting to quit. Health care providers can identify the patient’s stage of change, according to the Transtheoretical Model, and incorporate appropriate pharmacological and educational methods to aid in the quit attempt.

Influence Of Academic Qualifications, Place Of Employment And Prior Research Experience On Physiotherapy Research Practice, Peter J. Thomas, Marie Williams, Jeffrey Lipman

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

An increasing number of physiotherapists are undertaking research activities, but the level of overall awareness and understanding of ethical research practices is unknown. The aim of this study was to describe physiotherapist's knowledge of good research practices. Physiotherapists who presented abstracts at an Australian Physiotherapy Association conference in 2003/2004 were surveyed (n = 184, response rate = 55%). Excluding literature reviews, the majority of abstracts involved humans (95%), with 89% of these having human research ethics committee (HREC) approval. Only eight (6%) experimental research papers involving humans did not seek or gain HREC approval. Despite the high level of HREC …

The Low Vision Rehabilitation Service. Part Two: Putting The Program Into Practice, Joseph J. Pizzimenti, Elysa Roberts Jul 2005

The Low Vision Rehabilitation Service. Part Two: Putting The Program Into Practice, Joseph J. Pizzimenti, Elysa Roberts

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Low vision may affect a person's learning, daily functioning, and psychosocial status. Intervention in the form of vision rehabilitation has enabled many people to successfully meet and overcome the challenges posed by low vision. Part one of this two-part feature presented a four-phase, interdisciplinary model of low vision services that can be applied to any setting. This paper (part two) focuses on methods of assessing low vision, providing clinical services, and establishing an adaptive training and instructional program. The collaborative relationship between the patient/client, low vision physician (optometrist or ophthalmologist), and allied health professional (specifically, the occupational therapist) is described.

Reflection And Evidence Based Practice In Action: A Case Based Application, Ronald De Vera Barredo Jul 2005

Reflection And Evidence Based Practice In Action: A Case Based Application, Ronald De Vera Barredo

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Reflective practice and evidence-based practice are essential to clinical practice. The former provides a retrospective look at current practice and questions the reason for doing so. The latter provides the means by which best evidence can be used to make foundationally sound and clinically relevant decisions. This article demonstrates the utility of and the dynamics between reflective practice and evidence-based practice in the clinical setting using the first-hand experience of a physical therapist in home health care who worked with an elderly patient diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. The outcomes of the clinical case serve as the basis for …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

There is a growing number of research units and alliances whose purpose is to link researchers and community partner groups. Little has been published about the benefits of these research organizations, the characteristics that assist them to function, and how they evolve over time. This article describes the findings of a survey of 13 investigators and research coordinators from CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research, a multidisciplinary research unit founded in 1989. The article describes this group’s perceptions of CanChild as an organization, including major helpful factors, lessons learned, and changes over time to the Centre’s approach to research. The …

Mannose Binding Lectin Genotypes Influence Recovery From Hepatitis B Virus Infection, Chloe L. Thio, Timothy L. Mosbruger, Jacquie Astemborski, Spencer Greer, Gregory D. Kirk, Stephen J. O'Brien, David L. Thomas Jul 2005

Mannose Binding Lectin Genotypes Influence Recovery From Hepatitis B Virus Infection, Chloe L. Thio, Timothy L. Mosbruger, Jacquie Astemborski, Spencer Greer, Gregory D. Kirk, Stephen J. O'Brien, David L. Thomas

Biology Faculty Articles

Mannose binding lectin (MBL) is a central component of the innate immune response and thus may be important for determining hepatitis B virus (HBV) persistence. Since single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the gene encoding MBL (mbl2) alter the level of functional MBL, we hypothesized that mbl2 genotypes are a determinant of HBV persistence or recovery from viral infection. We tested this hypothesis by using a nested case control design with 189 persons with HBV persistence matched to 338 individuals who had naturally recovered from HBV infection. We determined genotypes of two promoter and three exon 1 SNPs in mbl2 …
