Social Support In Elderly Nursing Home Populations: Manifestations And Influences, Elizabeth M. Rash Sep 2007

Social Support In Elderly Nursing Home Populations: Manifestations And Influences, Elizabeth M. Rash

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics of social support and the influencing factors on social support in nursing home environments. Observations and staff questionnaires from two central Florida nursing homes were used in this grounded theory study to answer the following questions: (1) How is social support manifested? and (2) What are influences on social support? Social support manifestations seemed predominantly superficial and did not appear to involve complex reciprocal relationships, however, when reciprocal resident tasks were observed, they appeared to have significant value and were sources of pride for the residents. Facility behaviors and policies …

Hybrid Chronicles: Biracial And Biethnic Perspectives On The Pedagogy Of Unlearning Racism, Stéphanie Wahab, Sunshine T. Gibson Sep 2007

Hybrid Chronicles: Biracial And Biethnic Perspectives On The Pedagogy Of Unlearning Racism, Stéphanie Wahab, Sunshine T. Gibson

The Qualitative Report

This article details an autoethnography project of our odysseys into the pedagogy of unlearning racism. Our know ledge creation process forced us to re-envision both our locations in, and pedagogy of, anti-racism work, with particular attention to the challenges and dangers of teaching about, to, and from White privilege within social work. In the end, we are both troubled and invigorated by what we experienced, witnessed, and supported. By asking people of color to share their personal narratives of racism in the presence of Whites, teachers, facilitators, and diversity trainers stand to continue privileging Whiteness where Whites benefit and learn …

Using Qualitative Methods To Inform Scale Development, Noell Rowan, Dan Wulff Sep 2007

Using Qualitative Methods To Inform Scale Development, Noell Rowan, Dan Wulff

The Qualitative Report

This article describes the process by which one study utilized qualitative methods to create items for a multi dimensional scale to measure twelve step program affiliation. The process included interviewing fourteen addicted persons while in twelve step focused treatment about specific “pros” (things they like or would miss out on by not being involved in twelve-step programs) and “cons” (things they dislike or would benefit from if they did not engage in twelve-step programs). The triangular process used in qualitative research is described, which generated items for the subsequent instrument to measure ambivalence toward recovery programs. Mixed-method strategies included qualitative …

Green Medicine: Using Lessons From Tort Law And Environmental Law To Hold Pharmaceutical Manufacturers And Authorized Distributors Liable For Injuries Caused By Counterfeit Drugs, Stephanie Aleong Aug 2007

Green Medicine: Using Lessons From Tort Law And Environmental Law To Hold Pharmaceutical Manufacturers And Authorized Distributors Liable For Injuries Caused By Counterfeit Drugs, Stephanie Aleong

Faculty Scholarship

Counterfeit and adulterated prescription drugs have caused serious harm to consumers when these tainted products have easily permeated the legitimate marketplace over the last decades. Criminals and other actors introduce fake, adulterated, expired and foreign drugs into the drug distribution network which puts unsafe medicine into the hands of innocent consumers.

Due to the FDA’s identification of the dramatic rise in counterfeit drug investigations, in June of 2006, the FDA finally lifted the nearly twenty-year-old stay on requiring pedigree documentation, an actual history of the distribution transactions of a medicine before reaching a dispensing pharmacy, only to find that a …

HPD Articles

Reduced uterine perfusion initiated in late gestation in the rat results in intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and development of hypertension by 4 wk of age. We hypothesize that the renin angiotensin system (RAS), a regulatory system important in the long-term control of blood pressure, may be programmed by placental insufficiency and may contribute to the etiology of IUGR hypertension. We previously reported that RAS blockade abolished hypertension in adult IUGR offspring; however, the mechanisms responsible for the early phase of hypertension are unresolved. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine RAS involvement in early programmed hypertension and to …

Validation Of A Short Tandem Repeat Multiplex Typing System For Genetic Individualization Of Domestic Cat Samples, Nikia Coomber, Victor A. David, Stephen J. O'Brien, Marilyn Menotti-Raymond

Biology Faculty Articles

Aim To conduct developmental validation studies on a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based short tandem repeat (STR) multiplex typing system, developed for the purpose of genetic individualization and parentage testing in domestic cat samples.

Methods To evaluate reproducibility of the typing system, the multiplex was amplified using DNA extracted from hair, blood, and buccal samples obtained from the same individual (n = 13). Additional studies were performed to evaluate the system’s species’ specificity, using 26 North American mammalian species and two prokaryotes Sacchromyces and Escherichia coli, sensitivity, and ability to identify DNA mixtures. Patterns of Mendelian inheritance and mutation …

Closing The Border And Opening The Door: Mobility, Adjustment, And The Sequencing Of Reform, Timothy A. Canova Jul 2007

Closing The Border And Opening The Door: Mobility, Adjustment, And The Sequencing Of Reform, Timothy A. Canova

Faculty Scholarship

Since the enactment of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the U.S.-Mexico border has become increasingly open for trade and private investment. But for the movement of people it is a Porous Border. Meanwhile, Open Border proposals are unpopular and unrealistic due to concerns about national security and the economic impact of low-wage immigrant labor. Discussion is now dominated by Closed Border proposals to build a wall and further militarize the 2000-mile border. Each of these paradigms - the Closed Border, Open Border, and today's Porous Border - fails to address the painful dislocations in Mexican society that inevitably …

Intervention For Children With Developmental Coordination Disorder: A Systematic Review, Susan Hillier Jul 2007

Intervention For Children With Developmental Coordination Disorder: A Systematic Review, Susan Hillier

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Prevalence of children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is high (6-13% of all school children) and the negative impact of their movement difficulties on their participation in recreation and academic pursuits is well documented. This secondary research systematically reviewed the available literature for evidence of effectiveness of interventions that aim to improve the movement capability of children with DCD. Specified databases were searched for appropriate studies, these were retrieved and two reviewers appraised the level and quality of evidence. Thirty one studies were included between levels I and III-3 of the NH & MRC protocol. Scoring using an established critical …
