Effects Of Colored Words On Memory Retention, Adriana Gutierrez
Effects Of Colored Words On Memory Retention, Adriana Gutierrez
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Color seems to have an impact in our everyday lives. Memory color is a phenomenon in which an object's characteristic color enhances our memory retention. The objective of the present study is to examine which color can best facilitate memory retention. A sample of 30 participants (15 males and 15 females) were recruited from Nova Southeastern University. The participants were tested on their ability to recall a list of 20 words in the colors blue, green, orange, and red. Participants were also tested to determine what color they would be able to best recall. The list of 20 words included …
Effectiveness Analysis Of Email Marketing Campaigns, Kiyo Walker
Effectiveness Analysis Of Email Marketing Campaigns, Kiyo Walker
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Businesses usually spend significant time, effort and money on e-mail marketing campaigns. They are interested in evaluating the effectiveness of their campaigns, so that future campaigns can be optimized. In this project, we analyze e-mail based advertisement campaign or a specific business. We investigate the relationship between the number of links and the number of clicks in each e-mail campaign using the Pearson and Spearman statistical tests. We show that adding more links in a given e-mail campaign does not increase the user’s interest. We also calculate summary statistics for the number of links and clicks.

Comparison Of The Assignment Testing Capabilities Of The Population Structure Programs Baps And Structure Using Microsatellite Data From Tiger Sharks, Justin Chambers
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Although the practice of shark finning has been banned in multiple oceans worldwide, the practice continues to proliferate, with as many as 73 million sharks being killed each year for their fins. Since the legality of shark finning varies from ocean to ocean, methods to accurately determine not only the species of shark, but also the origin, need to be developed to help curtail this practice. This problem can be addressed through assignment testing—statistical methods that utilize genetic information to determine the population origin of individuals. Various software programs have been developed for population structure analysis. The goal of this …

The Truth About Deception, Natalia Carrillo
The Truth About Deception, Natalia Carrillo
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Deception is a prevalent form of communication. This paper explores, based on research taken from deception theorists, the many different types of deception, the strategies and motives in mind used by individuals while performing deception, and the positive and negative consequences of deception. Understanding why individuals rely on personal relationships is crucial to understanding the types of closeness they can develop with others and why deception takes place in these types of relationships. The paper then applies these factors by utilizing a television episode of King of Queens as an illustration of deception in a married couple’s life.

Drug Interaction Profile Of Posaconazole, Simon Leung, Mara Poulakos
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Adverse drug events resulting from drug-drug interactions may lead to emergency department visits, hospitalizations, prolonged length of stays, increased medical care costs, and death. Despite the efforts of research, clinical studies, and active reporting to identify and explain these drug interaction pathways, clinicians are often unaware of such drug-drug interactions. Therefore, it is imperative for pharmacists to identify these potential drug-drug interactions and notify the clinicians as well as the patients so that appropriate safety measures and monitoring methods are implemented. Specifically, immunocompromised patients often receive multiple drug regimens which are associated with toxicities and are highly susceptible to drug-drug …

When a selective sweep occurs in the chromosomal region around a target gene in two populations that have recently separated, it produces three dramatic genomic consequences: 1) decreased multi-locus heterozygosity in the region; 2) elevated or diminished genetic divergence (FST) of multiple polymorphic variants adjacent to the selected locus between the divergent populations, due to the alternative fixation of alleles; and 3) a consequent regional increase in the variance of FST (S2FST) for the same clustered variants, due to the increased alternative fixation of alleles in the loci surrounding the selection target. In …

Bathypelagic Fish Diversity In The Sargasso Sea, Northwestern Atlantic Ocean, Tracey Sutton, Peter Wiebe, Ann Bucklin, Laurence P. Madin
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
Of the various marine habitats, one of the (if not the) most daunting to quantify is the under-sampled bathypelagic zone (> 1000 m depth), which at 60% of the ocean’s volume is the largest habitat on Earth. One project addressing this challenge is the Census of
Marine Zooplankton (CMarZ), whose goal is the assessment of biodiversity of animal plankton throughout the world’s oceans. The 2006 CMarZ cruise in the Western North Atlantic provided an unprecedented opportunity to sample bathypelagic micronekton using a large midwater trawl (10-m2 MOCNESS) outfitted with fine (0.335-mm) mesh netting. This netting allowed non-destructive sampling of the …

The Use Of Hermeneutics In A Mixed Methods Design, Claudia Von Zweck, Margo Paterson, Wendy Pentland
The Qualitative Report
Combining methods in a single study is becoming a more common practice because of the limitations of using only one approach to fully address all aspects of a research question. Hermeneutics in this paper is discussed in relation to a large national study that investigated issues influencing the ability of international graduates to work as occupational therapists in Canada. Using methods that reflect different ontological and epistemological beliefs was necessary to attain a comprehensive view of enablers and barriers that influence workforce integration. Hermeneutics proved to be a credible and flexible strategy for combining methods to create a deep understanding …
