International Students’ Perspectives Of An Introductory Course As Preparation For Entry Into A Postgraduate Physiotherapy Program, Jennifer Roberts, Rebekah Das, Saravana Kumar
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Introductory or preparatory courses are often provided to international students in Australia as means to help them adjust to a new cultural and communication environment and a foreign educational setting. However, there is very little evaluation research on these introductory courses, especially from students’ perspectives, on their merits and demerits. Methods: This research utilised primary and secondary research methods. Firstly, a systematic review of the literature was undertaken to identify international students’ perspectives of education in Australia. Secondly, using qualitative and quantitative research methods, international postgraduate physiotherapy students’ perspectives of an introductory course at an Australian educational institution was …

Distress With Breathing In People With Lung Cancer: A Systematic Review, Elizabeth Quast, Marie Williams
Distress With Breathing In People With Lung Cancer: A Systematic Review, Elizabeth Quast, Marie Williams
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
While the prevalence of shortness of breath has been reported to be as frequent as pain in people with lung cancer, less attention has been paid to the distress associated with this symptom (dyspnea). This systematic review of the literature was undertaken to investigate how this symptom has been assessed and whether breathlessness in people with lung cancer is distressing. Using a pre-determined search strategy and inclusion criteria, thirty-one primary studies were identified and included in this review. A variety of outcome measures have been used to assess the experience of dyspnea with domains including intensity, distress, quality of life, …
Descriptive Analysis Of Level Of Implementation In Allied Health Educational Institutions Of Iom Recommended Core Competencies, James D. Blagg
Descriptive Analysis Of Level Of Implementation In Allied Health Educational Institutions Of Iom Recommended Core Competencies, James D. Blagg
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
A signal report of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 2003 stated that profound changes were needed in how health systems are designed, and postulated that such redesign could not take place without properly preparing health care professionals to take on this task. It established a set of core competencies (competence in patient-centered care, interdisciplinary teaming, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and informatics) that future professionals should possess. The current study was conducted to determine the extent to which these core competencies have been incorporated into curricula by colleges/schools of allied health. A survey was e-mailed to 112 institutional representatives of …

Does The Sensation Of Breathlessness Change Over Time In People With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease? A Systematic Review, Claire Mcevoy, Marie Williams
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
The aim of this systematic review was to identify and appraise studies which tracked changes in the sensation of breathlessness, as described in terms of intensity, unpleasantness, its effect on impairment levels or quality of life, over two or more years in people with COPD. Four major databases were searched. Twelve studies were included for full analysis. These studies were a mix of observational and experimental in their design, and were found to have high methodological quality. Subjects in the studies were, overall, severely impaired at the start of the two year period, according to level of airflow restriction. Impairment …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: This research looked at inter-rater agreement among faculty marking a research proposal on an undergraduate health course. The purpose of this study was to investigate if there were significant differences between marks as well as the comments given on research proposals that were double marked by two faculty members, where faculty were blind to the other marker’s marks and comments. Subjects: The subjects for this study consisted of 80 final year health students who submitted a research proposal and 13 full-time and 10 part-time faculty members who double marked the proposals. Methods: Faculty pairs marked the proposals independently and …

Teaching For Cultural Competence In Non-Diverse Environments, Mary L. Romanello, Karen Holtgrefe
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present teaching strategies to enhance students’ cultural competence in non-diverse educational settings. Methods: Utilizing Purnell’s cultural competence model and Lattanzi’s cultural ladder the authors describe teaching strategies used to promote students’ understanding of the complex nature of culture and how the multiple layers of culture influence the healthcare professional-client relationship. Teaching strategies and subsequent student reflections are presented. Results: Students adjusted client interventions and plans of care when confronted with various cultural characteristics of their clients. Integrating cultural issues in non-diverse academic settings challenges faculty to create situations that include cultural differences. …

Insider Experiences Of The Qualitative Report’S Reviewing Process, Pamela Felder, Tom Strong, Jennifer Ronald
The Qualitative Report
We (Pamela, Tom, and Jenn) wanted to give you our insiders’ experiences of the manuscript submission and reviewing process at The Qualitative Report (TQR). Respectively, we are a researcher-author, an instructor-reviewer, and a student-reviewer who were involved in the reviewing process that resulted in the publication of Pamela’s TQR article: On Doctoral Student Development: Exploring Faculty Mentoring in the Shaping of African American Doctoral Student Success (Felder, in press). In this brief article, we will adopt a somewhat conversational approach to relating our individual and collective experiences. How we came to work together, what that work entailed, and our experiences …

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is endemic in feral cat populations and cat colonies, frequently preceding outbreaks of fatal feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). FCoV exhibits 2 biotypes: the pathogenic disease and a benign infection with feline enteric coronavirus (FECV). Uncertainty remains regarding whether genetically distinctive avirulent and virulent forms coexist or whether an avirulent form mutates in vivo, causing FIP. To resolve these alternative hypotheses, we isolated viral sequences from FCoV-infected clinically healthy and sick cats (8 FIP cases and 48 FECV-asymptomatic animals); 735 sequences from 4 gene segments were generated and subjected to phylogenetic analyses. Viral sequences from healthy cats were …
The Perceptions Of Student Teachers About The Effects Of Class Size With Regard To Effective Teaching Process, Melek Çakmak
The Perceptions Of Student Teachers About The Effects Of Class Size With Regard To Effective Teaching Process, Melek Çakmak
The Qualitative Report
The main purpose of this study was to determine student teachers' perceptions concerning the effects of class size with regard to the teaching process. A total of 41 fourth-year student teachers participated in the study. A questionnaire including open-ended items was used for data collection. The study revealed that there is a direct relationship between class size and motivation, teaching method used, classroom management, and assessment according to student teachers' views. Although carried with a small sample size, this study is expected to establish a firm basis for the future studies to contribute to teacher training programs, which enhance student …

We Have The Videoconference Equipment Installed, Now What?, Janine Lim, Shirley Freed
The Qualitative Report
As K-12 schools acquire equipment for videoconferencing, they often experience limited usage of the equipment. The purpose of this study was to identify specific concerns of educators currently involved in videoconferencing. The primary data for the study was 400 discussion posts from 34 educators in an online class about videoconferencing. Data were analyzed using a basic iterative hermeneutic approach. The findings fell into two major categories: teacher concerns and administrative support. Teachers' concerns were related to professional development and curriculum expectations, and administrative support issues included the placement of the equipment, scheduling, and budgeting. Successful implementation of videoconferencing requires the …
Visualizing Qualitative Information, Debra J. Sloane
Visualizing Qualitative Information, Debra J. Sloane
The Qualitative Report
The abundance of qualitative data in today's society and the need to easily scrutinize, digest, and share this information calls for effective visualization and analysis tools. Yet, no existing qualitative tools have the analytic power, visual effectiveness, and universality of familiar quantitative instruments like bar charts, scatter-plots, and pie charts. Amid a discussion of the need for more powerful qualitative analysis and visualization tools, this article presents a device that takes us toward better representations of qualitative results.
"Dr. Right": Elderly Women In Pursuit Of Negotiated Health Care And Mutual Decision Making, Kevin Evans, Suzanne Robertson
"Dr. Right": Elderly Women In Pursuit Of Negotiated Health Care And Mutual Decision Making, Kevin Evans, Suzanne Robertson
The Qualitative Report
This study explores a group of elderly women who were searching for physicians that were interested in providing negotiated health care options with particular interest in mutual decision making. The grounded theory approach was used to explore the health care interactions between the physicians and the elderly women (Strauss & Corbin, 1998). Qualitative interviews were conducted with eleven women, 75 years and older. The categorical working title of "Looking for Dr. Right" helped to focus our discovery of the reasons for these women's search for a new physician. Grounded in the data, a proposed hypothesis was developed regarding the need …

How I Learned To Design And Conduct Semi-Structured Interviews: An Ongoing And Continuous Journey, Silvia E. Rabionet
The Qualitative Report
Qualitative interviewing is a flexible and powerful tool to capture the voices and the ways people make meaning of their experience Learning to conduct semi-structure interviews requires the following six stages: (a) selecting the type of interview; (b) establishing ethical guidelines, (c) crafting the interview protocol; (d) conducting and recording the interview; (e) crafting the interview protocol; and (f) reporting the findings. A researcher’s personal journey in crafting an interview protocol to interview HIV researchers is summarized. She highlights that training and experience are crucial and identifies some readings that can help in the process.

The Qualitative Report
More books on mixed methods research have been published recently. One notable contribution to this growing body of work is Bergman’s 2008 Advances in Mixed Methods Research: Theories and Applications. This edited work features contributions by different researchers and addresses a myriad of issues ranging from the need to re-conceptualize the paradigmatic differences between qualitative and quantitative approaches to methodological issues and challenges. This book should prove useful to researchers and graduate students interested in mixed methods designs.
