Appraising Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Risk: Single-Legged Jump-Landing Dynamic Postural Stability, Colin Bond
Appraising Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Risk: Single-Legged Jump-Landing Dynamic Postural Stability, Colin Bond
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Appraising anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk is of great interest to the orthopedic and sports medicine professional. Due to the high prevalence of non-contact ACL injuries, professionals have sought to identify intrinsic and modifiable neuromuscular and biomechanical risk factors to aid in the design of injury risk screens that have the discriminatory capacity to stratify ACL injury risk and the efficiency to be implemented at-scale. Prospective studies have revealed that poor dynamic postural stability (DPS), quantified as time to stabilization (TTS), following a backwards single-legged jump-landing (BSLJL) and poor hip external rotation and abduction strength relative to body weight, …
Effectiveness Of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Ventilation Devices With Protective Hockey Equipment As Performed By Certified Athletic Trainers, Lauren Konkol
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) are expected to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on athletes experiencing cardiac arrest regardless of the protective equipment worn by the athlete. Additionally, ventilation devices used by ATCs aid in the delivery of ventilations during CPR. The goal of this research was to determine which ventilation device allowed ATCs to deliver adequate ventilations and to establish recommendations for helmet removal method in hockey players requiring CPR. Twenty ATCs completed four scenarios of CPR according to the 2020 AHA guidelines using a PocketMask (PM) or FaceShield (FS) to deliver ventilations and accessing the airway by removing only the …
Systematic Intervention Component Analysis: Dose-Response For Therapeutic Ultrasound, Stephanie Hamersky
Systematic Intervention Component Analysis: Dose-Response For Therapeutic Ultrasound, Stephanie Hamersky
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Therapeutic ultrasound has been well documented in the literature to affect human tissue. The four main parameters practitioners are able to influence are frequency, duty cycle, intensity, and treatment time. Alteration to one or more of these parameters will affect the total dose of acoustical energy delivered to the tissue resulting in a target tissue temperature increase or biophysical effect. The goal of this two-part study was to determine the appropriate energy dose of therapeutic ultrasounds needed to create a beneficial intervention when treating unhealthy human tissue. Prior to the investigation a non-systematic review was conducted to determine the dose-response …

An Outcome Evaluation Of Centre Incorporated’S Responsive Risk Reduction For Women Program, John Ursino
An Outcome Evaluation Of Centre Incorporated’S Responsive Risk Reduction For Women Program, John Ursino
Criminal Justice and Political Science
Research on gender-responsive correctional programming has yielded mixed results. Contemporary literature proposes practices aimed at increasing the efficacy of gender-responsive programming. Prior research has highlighted differential characteristics between female and male offenders, leading some scholars to suggest that correctional programming that is constructed to respond to needs and risks that disproportionately affect female offenders is needed to address the growing female incarcerated population. The current study seeks to expand upon the literature of such programs by conducting an outcome evaluation of a gender-responsive community-corrections program in Fargo, North Dakota that serves biological female offenders. The study provides contextual information about …

Patch-Burning Improves Forage Nutritive Value And Livestock Performance Over Rotational And Continuous Grazing Strategies, Megan Wanchuk
Patch-Burning Improves Forage Nutritive Value And Livestock Performance Over Rotational And Continuous Grazing Strategies, Megan Wanchuk
Range Science
Rangelands simultaneously support livestock production while maintaining ecosystem functionality. Patch-burning is a grazing management strategy with benefits for wildlife habitat and conservation. However, previous work pertaining to livestock has not examined potential benefits to livestock production. We assessed forage nutritive value, and cattle performance on patch-burning compared to continuous and rotational grazing. We also examined how prescribed fire alters forage mineral content through time since patch-burning. The recently burned patch had better forage nutritive value than patches with longer time since fire and no fire grazing methods, meeting the highest proportion of cow requirements. In 2017, a mild-drought year, cows …

What are their structures and programing that make them successful? My study is also promoting and proposing an environment for learning objectives for young developing children in low income housing, with project elements such as natural playground setting, pushing a narrative of …
Sexual Dimorphisms In The Adipose Biology Of Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide Deficient Mice, Emma Hawley
Sexual Dimorphisms In The Adipose Biology Of Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide Deficient Mice, Emma Hawley
Microbiological Sciences
Both VIP and PACAP deficient mice display impaired fat storage, but only the molecular adipose characteristics of PACAP KO mice are known. While mice deficient in these peptides are lean, supplementation could promote weight gain in livestock after establishing tissue distribution. We investigated both sides of this 'metabolic coin' by measuring serum metabolites, adipocyte area, and pscWAT gene expression in VIP deficient mice and screening 15 ruminant tissues for VIP, PACAP, and their receptors using RT-qPCR. We found male VIP deficient mice displayed hypertrophic adipocytes, low serum FFAs, and suppressed relative mRNA expression of TMEM26. In ruminants, VIP and PACAP …
Establishing And Characterizing Patient-Derived Breast Cancer Cell Lines, Farid Solaymani Mohammadi
Establishing And Characterizing Patient-Derived Breast Cancer Cell Lines, Farid Solaymani Mohammadi
Biological Sciences
Commercial cancer cell lines have long been extensively used as an important platform to study cancer. They have contributed to a plethora of discoveries in the field of cancer research. However, there are limitations with using these cell lines, such as induced mutations over the long-term in vitro culture. These mutations cause incorrect exhibition of the in vivo characteristics of the cancer cells. Here, we focused on establishing Patient-derived breast cancer cell lines and attempted to characterize them in terms of several biomarkers that are shown to be overexpressed in breast cancer cells. Patient-derived breast cancer cell lines are more …
Fluorescent Detection Of Secondary Structure In Pancreatic Cancer, Aaron Bauer
Fluorescent Detection Of Secondary Structure In Pancreatic Cancer, Aaron Bauer
Biomedical Engineering
Pancreatic cancer has one of the highest mortality rates among all cancers largely due to the late-stage onset of symptoms and the lack of early detection methods. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) could serve the potential as the next biomarker for pancreatic cancer detection because they directly reflect the state and composition of their parent cells. This work aimed to generate a high-throughput assay by combining immunoprecipitation of EVs with -sheet staining by Thioflavin T (ThT) in a 96-well plate based off previous findings that ThT could be used to measure the elevated -sheet richness found in tumor-derived EVs. This research tested …

Rangeland Forage Growth Prediction, Logistics, Energy, And Economics Analysis And Tool Development Using Open-Source Software, Subhashree Navaneetha Srinivasagan
Agribusiness and Biosystems Engineering
Forage availability was crucial for livestock production across the United States. Rangelands occupied vast areas 31 % of land and were the primary source of forage for livestock. However, extreme climatic conditions such as drought affect rangeland forage production and pose a serious threat to the rangeland enterprise. This increases the need to monitor forage in vast rangelands and adapt to other measures such as cultivating or buying forage to balance demand and supply. Despite this need, resources (studies and tools) on rangeland forage monitoring and existing forage production, handling, and economics were scattered and scarce. Therefore, a comprehensive systematic …

Influence Of Plasma Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Profile, Urea-Nitrogen, Glucose And Non-Esterified Fatty Acids On Dry Matter Intake In Developing Heifers And Mature Cows, Samuel Olorunkoya
Animal Sciences
The objective of this experiment was to determine if nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) profiles or blood metabolites could explain dry matter intake (DMI) in developing heifers and/or mature cows in the weeks leading to breeding. A total of 335 heifers and 60 cows were fed a forage-based diet. A general linear model (GLM) was fit for DMI using fixed effects; breed, frame size, birth year. Non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) had the greatest association with DMI (R2 ranged from 54.4% to 58.1% and 64.4% to 70.6%) in heifers and cows, respectively. The NMR profiles accounted for the smallest amount of variation …
The Effect Of Hemp Byproduct Supplementation On Beef Quality, Kiersten Gundersen
The Effect Of Hemp Byproduct Supplementation On Beef Quality, Kiersten Gundersen
Animal Sciences
The supplementation of hempseed cake (hemp byproduct) could be considered an alternative protein and fiber source for ruminants such as cattle. Hempseed cake might be a successful alternative feed source due to cattle’s digestive abilities. Yet, the physiological effects caused by cannabinoids in hemp (cannabidiol [CBD] and (-)-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinaol [THC]) are of concern. However, hemp with much less than 0.3% THC on a dry matter basis can remain a potential alternative feed ingredient. The objective of this study was to evaluate the significance of hempseed cake inclusion in a late finishing ration on carcass characteristics, meat quality characteristics, retail shelf-life, proximate …

Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Size, Feeding Behavior, And Feed Efficency In Beef Cattle, Macie Mosher
Animal Sciences
Feed efficiency in cow-calf operations can be influenced by multiple environmental and physiological factors. The current study examined the association between body size (weight, frame score, and volume), linear body measurements, and feeding behavior with different measures of feed efficiency in multiparous lactating beef cows. Prediction models for dry matter intake in cows using linear body measurements were also developed. Our findings indicate that body size measurements and feeding behavior may influence measures of efficiency. The inclusion of body measurements in prediction models of intake may serve as accurate and feasible methods for estimating intake of cows on farm. The …

Architecture Theses
Beaches, resorts, and recreational activities serve as a main source of attraction for some cities across the world that reside next to large bodies of water. This often leads to cities becoming dependent on tourism for their source of income and identity. However, some resorts do not have the ability and accessibility to resources in order to become sustainable. Small towns with beach resorts often do not have facilities and equipment to progress towards a sustainable resort. The landscape surrounding a resort often can affect tourists’ comfortability and experience around the resort. A master plan emphasizing sustainability and a landscape …
Identification Of Genomic Regions Associated With Color-Related Traits In Durum Wheat, Seyedali Hosseinirad
Identification Of Genomic Regions Associated With Color-Related Traits In Durum Wheat, Seyedali Hosseinirad
Plant Sciences
Durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. ssp. durum Desf.) is one of the main crops for human consumption, and it is an essential ingredient for pasta production. The color of pasta can range from bright yellow to dim brown. Pasta brightness and yellowness are important quality indicators for producers and customers. Releasing durum wheat cultivars capable of producing pasta products with high yellow color can be an important goal for breeders. Yellow pigment content (YPC) is one of the important components that affect pasta color. The yellow color of pasta is not necessarily dictated by the presence of YPC; soluble brown …

Forage mixes could serve as a cover crop mix to protect the soil during the winter, for prevented planting areas or as a high nutritious feed for grazing livestock. The objective of this study was to determine the nutritive value and productivity of selected annual forage mixes compared with forage sorghum monocrops. The nutritive value of annual forage mixes and monocrops varied across environments and between treatments. Monocultures produced more biomass than annual forage mixes. The three most productive mixes in comparison to the others were hybrid brassica/oat/forage pea/forage sorghum x sudangrass/sweet sorghum blend/foxtail millet, turnip/forage sorghum x sudangrass/sweet sorghum …
Study Of Freezing Tolerance After Cold Acclimation Followed By Deacclimation In Winter And Spring Canola (Brassica Napus L.), Ashok Mandal
Study Of Freezing Tolerance After Cold Acclimation Followed By Deacclimation In Winter And Spring Canola (Brassica Napus L.), Ashok Mandal
Plant Sciences
Winter canola/rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) produced 20 to 30% greater yield over spring canola. It overwinters to flower in spring. The winter type shows increased freezing tolerance after cold acclimation, which is crucial to survive in winter. However, short duration warm spells can cause canola to lose increased freezing tolerance in a process called “deacclimation” making it again vulnerable to freezing damage. We found canola almost completely deacclimated at 13°C or more for at least two days of deacclimation. However, longer duration of deacclimation (7 & 14 days) showed increased freezing tolerance as compared to 2 & 3 days at …
Non-Chemical Weed Management In Annual And Perennial Organic Cropping Systems, Zachary Pull
Non-Chemical Weed Management In Annual And Perennial Organic Cropping Systems, Zachary Pull
Plant Sciences
Weedy pests, especially perennial weeds, are among the most challenging barriers to organic crop production. Improving non-chemical weed management tactics for established organic productions systems, like cool-season grains, and emerging crops like perennial flax could benefit producers. We compared three crop sequences for creeping perennial weed suppression in organic grains. Three years of alfalfa was associated with reduced densities and aboveground biomass of perennial weeds compared to sequences that alternated grain and cover crops. Interseeding cover crops with perennial flax for weed management was attempted, but neither flax nor cover established well. Flame weeding and cultivation in perennial flax were …
Influence Of Soil Type, Fertilizer, And Mulch Amendment In Containerized Polyculture, Lena Fiskness
Influence Of Soil Type, Fertilizer, And Mulch Amendment In Containerized Polyculture, Lena Fiskness
Plant Sciences
There are many avenues to address global food supply and global food production increasing food security for individuals and communities. Though corporate agriculture provides the largest percentage of global sustenance through grain monocultures, small-scale, subsistence, intercropping production is another means of direct-to-consumer horticultural supply for additional food security. Due to supply chain disruptions, inferior infrastructure, economic lack, and inaccessible land and/or agricultural equipment, large-scale production is not always feasible in impoverished communities where food security is greatest. This research determines the feasibility of growing “The Three Sisters” polyculture in containerized production as well as fertilizer and mulch amendment recommendations per …
Improving Management And Understanding Of Major Diseases Of Sugar Beet, Md Ziaur Rahman Bhuiyan
Improving Management And Understanding Of Major Diseases Of Sugar Beet, Md Ziaur Rahman Bhuiyan
Plant Pathology
Sugar beet is a sugar-yielding crop, that contributes 25% of the global sucrose production. Economic production of sugar beet is hampered by Cercospora leaf spot (CLS) (Cercospora beticola), Rhizoctonia crown and root rot (RCRR) (Rhizoctonia solani), Sclerotinia root rot (SRR) (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum), and Rhizopus root rot (Rhizopus arrhizus) diseases. These diseases can reduce yield by 15 to 40%. On CLS, buildup of fungicide-resistance strains is a major issue due to poor implementation of fungicides and understanding of disease development at early stages. The identification of germplasm resistant to RCRR disease is hindered by the lack of effective inoculation methods. Identification …

Corn-Alfalfa Intercropping With Different Row Spacings, Samuel Bibby
Plant Sciences
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a staple crop grown mainly by dairy and beef farmers in the Midwest. To determine if seeding alfalfa with corn (Zea mays L.) could increase alfalfa forage yield and nutritive value in the second year, and provide a corn crop during the first year, an experiment was conducted in Prosper and Hickson, ND in 2020 and 2021. Corn grain yield in 2020 was negatively impacted by 152-cm corn row spacing compared with 76-cm row spacing. However, there was no significant difference in corn grain yield with or without an alfalfa intercrop for the same row …
