Validity Of A Portable Ekg Device To Monitor Heart Rate And Rhythm In College-Aged Male Athletes, Brenda Reeves, Priscilla Maghrabi, Brock Guetzke, Anna Howery

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Abstract

Introduction: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is the leading medical cause of death for male athletes, especially in anaerobic-based sports. Standard 12-lead electrocardiograms (STD-ECG) have received recent attention for their diagnostic utility, but lack the practicality for mass screenings. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the validity of a compact HD-EKG unit during various testing environments: rest, aerobic activity, and immediate recovery of anaerobic activity in college-age, male athletes.

Methods: Twelve college-aged (19.9 ± 1.1 years old), male athletes volunteered. Test procedures included two ECG devices, a STD-ECG and a high-definition (HD-) EKG, simultaneously recording heart rate (HR) …

The Value Of Information In The Health Sciences: First, Do No Harm, Candace K. Vance Jan 2018

The Value Of Information In The Health Sciences: First, Do No Harm, Candace K. Vance

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

The lesson in this chapter illustrates one way to challenge students in the health sciences to think beyond simply finding and accepting the validity of scholarly peer-reviewed articles and encourages them to think more critically and skeptically about research. The lesson focuses on the Information Has Value threshold concept in ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. The frame states, “experts understand that value may be wielded by powerful interests in ways that marginalize certain voices.” When students enter into their fields of interest in healthcare, they must recognize their responsibility for “making deliberate and informed choices about …

Physicians Or Facebook? The Effects Of Do-It-Yourself Healthcare On Modern Society., Kelli Jo Compton-Thweatt

Integrated Studies

All patients have the right to be an advocate for their own healthcare; however, most patients in today’s society abuse that right by delving from professional medical advice given per their healthcare provider. It is imperative that self-diagnosis and self-treatment do not undermine healthcare professionals and do not replace the medical treatment advice given to incite healing. Do-it-yourself healthcare has become increasingly popular in the last decade due largely in part to rising healthcare costs. While having negative implications on modern society, the articles explored illustrate how do-it-yourself healthcare has given rise to a new era of chaos proving that …

Alternative non-pharmaceutical interventions such as music and art therapies may be better suited for patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Research regarding music and art therapies as treatment options has yielded promising results. Furthermore, music and art therapies have thus gained popularity among geriatric …

Trophic Interactions And Niche Partitioning Within A Post-White-Nose Syndrome Temperate Bat Community, Macy Kailing Jan 2018

Trophic Interactions And Niche Partitioning Within A Post-White-Nose Syndrome Temperate Bat Community, Macy Kailing

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

The decline of cave-dwelling bats since the introduction of white-nose syndrome (WNS) to North America changed the way communities interact. Disease-mediated competition at the community level can influence the ability of imperiled species to recover because of competitive exclusion. In western Kentucky, tri-colored bats, Perimyotis subflavus, which are susceptible to WNS severely declined following WNS occurrence. During that same period, evening bats, Nycticeius humeralis, which are not susceptible to WNS increased markedly. To investigate the influence of WNS on community structure, the diets of sympatric tri-colored and evening bats were assessed. Guano was collected from evening (n=37) and …
