Wound Care Nurses Becoming Quitline Providers And Teaching Patients About Smoking Cessation And Nicotine Replacement Therapy, Hannah Gilbert, Lakyn Rye
Wound Care Nurses Becoming Quitline Providers And Teaching Patients About Smoking Cessation And Nicotine Replacement Therapy, Hannah Gilbert, Lakyn Rye
Scholars Week
Our evidence-based practice project focuses on wound care nurses becoming Quitline providers and teaching patients about smoking cessation and nicotine replacement therapy. To guide our research, we used Florence Nightingale’s Environmental Theory. Smoking is a modifiable risk factor that is a part of the patient’s environment. Our research we used supports that smoking can affect wound healing. We believe that wound care nurses should be trained in smoking cessation and nicotine replacement therapy prescribing to be an advocate to patients and their journey to wound healing.
Tracheostomy Education For Pediatric Patients And Parents, Jonathon Batts, Kendall Baker
Tracheostomy Education For Pediatric Patients And Parents, Jonathon Batts, Kendall Baker
Scholars Week
To begin this project, we found that this specific facility did not have proper education given to parents about pediatric tracheostomies. Pediatric patients with tracheostomies are a very delicate population that requires extensive, round the clock care. We were able to establish a theoretical framework with Orem’s Self-Care theory that matched very well with our topic, and finally we were able to find research articles that looked at this patient population specifically. The need for a tracheostomy in pediatric patients can lead to extreme anxiety in patients and parents. Our recommendations for this facility would be to implement the “Trach …
Preventing Insulin Storage And Administration Errors, Makena Reddick
Preventing Insulin Storage And Administration Errors, Makena Reddick
Scholars Week
■The research problem was discovered when nurses were observed storing and administering insulin improperly. The objectives of this project were to find the correct policies for these procedures, obtain research that backed these policies, and present this information to nurses to create a safer habit. In researching, it was found that reducing the physical distance between a person completing work and the materials required to do so increased compliance (Gibbs & McLernon, 2017). In a second study, the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality care for patients with diabetes in the community is dependent upon (district) nurses having appropriate knowledge …
Improving The Care Of Children With Diabetes In School Through Staff Education, Taylor Mckendree, Gina Piscatelle
Improving The Care Of Children With Diabetes In School Through Staff Education, Taylor Mckendree, Gina Piscatelle
Scholars Week
Background: Diabetes is a growing problem in the United States. The number of school-aged children with diabetes is increasing annually. Diabetes is a disease that requires ongoing management throughout the day. Since children spend a large portion of the day at school, it is imperative that all school staff are educated about the care and management of diabetes.
Results: Research has indicated that non-medical school staff lack knowledge and are not confident in the management of diabetes. There has also been research conducted on ways to improve school staff education through policies, presentations, and eLearning materials. The material presented to …

All across the world there is an opioid epidemic taking place that can affect any one person. It does not discriminate by age, gender, or ethnicity. Knowing this information, one group is greatly at risk and that is the school aged population. Teenagers are focused on wanting to fit in with peers, and are easily affected by peer pressure. This puts them at an increased risk for experimenting with drugs. This information pushed us to research about policies in place in school systems to help fight the epidemic. In 2017 2.2 million people of ages 12-17 were illicit drug users …

Mask Etiquette For Nurses During A Pandemic: N95 Respirators Vs. Surgical Masks, Haylee Shevlin, Carlin Jones
Scholars Week
Healthcare personnel are blatantly exposed to COVID-19 while at work. Incorrect PPE, inaccurate donning and doffing of PPE, and improper disinfection of masks for reuse is contributing to exposure of not only COVID-19, but other respiratory illnesses too. Throughout this presentation there is information as to when surgical masks and N95 respirators should be used as well as the correct procedure for donning and doffing of both masks. Proper disinfection for the reuse of both masks during a PPE shortage is also included.
Key words: N95 respirator, surgical mask, COVID-19, PPE
Evidence-Based Practice: Delaying Infant Bathing, Gabrielle Wadle, Grace Frankland
Evidence-Based Practice: Delaying Infant Bathing, Gabrielle Wadle, Grace Frankland
Scholars Week
A hospital's policy regarding infant bathing is currently not congruent with best nursing practice. The hospital’s current policy is to bathe an infant once they are stable and their rectal temperature is at or above 98.6 °F. Although the infant may become stable within the first 24-hours of birth, the World Health Organization recommends that, “Bathing should be delayed until 24 hours after birth.” (2013, p. 4). Research has been completed to support delaying infant bathing until 24 hours post-delivery, suggesting potential modifications to current policy.

Key points
- While the importance of citation context has long been recognized, simple citation counts remain as a crude measure of importance.
- Providing citation context should support the publication of careful science instead of headline‐grabbing and salami‐sliced non‐replicable studies.
- Machine learning has enabled the extraction of citation context for the first time, and made the classification of citation types at scale possible.
The Effects Of Victorian Circulating Libraries On The Conventions Of Society, Kaitlyn M. Clary
The Effects Of Victorian Circulating Libraries On The Conventions Of Society, Kaitlyn M. Clary
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
As an era that is oftentimes categorized as one of the most prudish in British history, it is commonplace to see the Victorian Period as a time that imposed strict moral codes onto people of all classes, genders, and ages. Although the 18th century proved to be quite lenient with the manner in which social behavior was controlled, the 19th century proved to be an era of tension between the social order and individual desire, particularly for the middle and upper classes. With the aid of the Industrial Revolution, many governments found it essential to utilize the newly innovated printing …

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
While the solvating power of ionic liquids (ILs) for a variety of solute types including polymers is well-known, the use of ILs as solvents for ionenes—charged polymers with cationic moieties within the backbone—has only recently begun to be explored. IL–ionene combinations offer vast possibilities to make iongels and perhaps even use ILs to exert control over ionene organization (i.e., coil or rod). If the IL solvent is also polymerizable, then poly(IL)–ionene semi-interpenetrating networks (semi-IPNs) can be achieved. This study reports, for the first time, examples of poly(IL)–ionene semi-IPNs formed by dissolving an ionene in a vinyl-functionalized imidazolium IL followed by …

Thiol-ene photopolymerization was used to generate a series of covalently crosslinked, imidazolium-containing ionene networks. A variety of counteranions were chosen so as to investigate the influence of size and basicity on the thermal, mechanical and conductive properties of the resulting networks. Anhydrous conductivities at 20 °C were found to be on the order of 10−6 to 10−10 S/cm and correlated to some degree with Tg; however, Tg-normalization of the curves indicated that this relationship between polymer structure and conductivity was more complex. VFT fitting, along with free ion concentration and ion mobility data, were investigated in order to …

A series of 1,2,3-triazolium-functionalized cellulose derivatives were prepared using an azide–alkyne “click” cyclization strategy, followed by quaternization. As cellulose represents an inexpensive and sustainable biomacromolecule, the ability to functionalize the backbone with an ionic liquid and generate conductive materials is of great interest. Here, three different counteranions ([Br], [OTf], and [NTf2]) were employed to explore the interplay between thermal, conductive, and morphological properties using a diverse set of techniques including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray scattering, and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS). Functionalization of native cellulose resulted in …

This paper discusses Charles Dickens’ expert weaving of realism into his very entertaining 1838 novel, Oliver Twist. The novel takes the reader through a sometimes-unbelievable obstacle course for the young Oliver, but the true stories of real children in Victorian London are being told as well.
There are several reasons for the state these children existed in, including England’s growing industrialization, the undervaluing of children in general, and The New Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834. This paper looks into Dickens’ own childhood as well, in hopes of getting a glimpse into what may have motivated him to step …
