Transitional Challenges For Students With Disabilities During A Period Of Systemic Imbalance, Cindy Clemson Ed.D., Ben Littlepage Ed.D.
Transitional Challenges For Students With Disabilities During A Period Of Systemic Imbalance, Cindy Clemson Ed.D., Ben Littlepage Ed.D.
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
The present study explored how student support service administrators responded to the observed transitional challenges of students with disabilities during a period of systemic imbalance. Administrators at four community colleges in Tennessee, responsible for the coordination of student disability services, participated in a multi-site case study. Analysis revealed students with disabilities had unrealized expectations of postsecondary education, sought the same individualized attention experienced in secondary school, and misunderstood administrative processes, especially those associated with securing accommodations, upon entering college. Although the transitional challenges were not unique, increased enrollments and an inadequate infrastructure added difficulty to administrators’ ability to respond. Administrators …

Professional Practices (ART 399)
Artist Statement
My work explores a range of subject matter and themes, but I try to make all of it with a simplistic approach so people could relate and understand it better. I usually produce two types of artworks, i.e., drawings and graphically designed stuff like posters, illustrations, covers, reports, etc. I frequently use pencil and charcoal for drawings and adobe photoshop, adobe illustrator for illustrations and logos and InDesign for designing posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers, presentations, books.
I choose graphic design because I feel it is a is a good way to communicate to public and be creative …

Professional Practices (ART 399)
My preferred media is oil paint on varying objects and ink drawings. The subject matter is drawn from life or studied then imagined later in the studio to add a creative and unnatural feeling. Through the use of vibrant fractal shapes dissipating from the subject to captivate the viewer’s eye. I also take the liberty of using influences of pop artist, American Realists and Golden Age comic book art, I use the two periods and synthesize them into a more contemporary anatomy study. I really enjoy the dynamic and thick lines in both comic book illustrators and pop artists but …

Tristan B. Miller Artist Statement We
I do not approach art making from a traditional angle. Other artist statements that i have written were constructed at a time where I was a completely different person, therefore, they were actually written by another person, a different me. I construct forms that bring myselves, and the viewer, closer to an understanding of what it means to be conscious and exist in relation to the natural universe. The objects themselves very in every sense of physicality depending on how the audience and I intend to utilise them. The nucleus of the work is …

Revolution Is American Until It Isn't: A Study Of American Reactions To The French Revolution 1789 And The Russian Revolutionary Period Of 1917, Jonathan Dunning
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
This study compares American reactions to both the French Revolution of 1789 and the Russian revolutions of 1917, and it finds that there are striking similarities in American responses to both. Early Republic Americans supported the French Revolution when it began, as they believed the French were adopting democratic and liberal ideas. Likewise, World War I era Americans supported the February Revolution in Russia, as they thought the rise of the Provisional Government would create a bright democratic future for the Russian people. However, as the French Revolution turned increasing violent in the 1790s and the Bolsheviks brought about the …

“The Only Way Out Is In”: Negotiating Identity Through Narrative In The House On Mango Street And The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao, Brianna E. Taylor
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
While aimed at vastly different audiences, Sandra Cisneros’s beloved coming-of-age story The House on Mango Street and Junot Díaz’s Pulitzer Prize-winning debut novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao both uniquely capture the complexities of navigating the hyphenated territory between their respective Mexican-American and Dominican-American identities. Cisneros engages readers with the simple yet profound narrative voice of Esperanza in a series of vignettes that subtly reveal a growing consciousness of her role as a young Mexican-American woman and her creative consciousness as an artist. Through the multifaceted narrative perspective of Yunior, Díaz skillfully weaves together “ghetto nerd” Oscar de …

This label of otherness is what consumes my work and has become an outlet for my personal frustrations with the world around me. These sculptures are a manifestation of my feelings as i’m shaped by and seen through “the male gaze.” This term is from Laura mulvey’s theory that proposes that the act of viewing women is as an object to satisfy a heterosexual masculine gaze. exaggerating and imprisoning my form, These objects draw attention to restrictions placed on me for just being female.

Scholars Week
This project is an examination of the correlations between imperial enterprises of the Second German Empire and the Nazi Reich through the lenses of global and imperial critiques. By studying the realities and experiences of German Southwest Africa, the Ober Ost, and Nazi-occupied Easter Europe, this paper attempts to identify the common elements of German imperialism: pathos, frantic improvisation, cognizance of contemporaries, and industrial modernity. To help elucidate these elements, this research studied the themes and theories developed by leading historians of modern German and Eastern European history, including Timothy Snyder, Ben Kiernan, Shelley Baranowski, Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius, and Christopher …
Advancements In Archaeology Through Remote Sensing, Austin Valentine
Advancements In Archaeology Through Remote Sensing, Austin Valentine
Student Scholarship & Creative Works
One aspect of remote sensing applied to archaeology is through the utilization of aerial photography. Some of the first records of aerial photographs being applied to the discipline of archaeology date back to the late 1920’s. One such example was a series of photographs taken by the famous pilot Col. Charles Lindberg. Col. Lindberg, who was actually fascinated with the field of archaeology, made a series of flights taking photographs of the Chaco Canyon in New Mexico as well as Maya ruins in both Mexico and Guatemala.
Since, archaeology has become a science that can be conducted from both aloft …

It has been proposed that by initiating the highest percentages of nursing compliance, overall patient outcomes will improve along with a decrease in the number of ventilator-associated events (VAEs). The aim of the study is to appraise the association between nursing compliance with a ventilator bundle and a successful decline in the number of events of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in the intensive care unit (ICU). The study also provides evidence-based direction on the best nursing practices essential to reducing the rates of VAP. Objectives include expanding the awareness of critical care staff on prevention and compliance and to improve teamwork …

The Tennessee Promise is a last-dollar scholarship program offering tuition subsidies to eligible state high school graduates that pursue an associate's degrees at one of the participating institutions. The program has inadvertently resulted in fewer traditional-aged students beginning their collegiate journey at four-year colleges and universities. Functional units like career counseling have seen the impact of Promise shift service demands from exploratory- to employment preparatory-centered, as the needs of junior-level transfer students differ from those of traditional-aged freshmen. The presenters conducted a multi-site case study to explore how Career Counseling administrators at three private liberal arts and four public-assisted, regional …

Abstract
The prevalence of morbidly obese patient within the United States is on a rapid incline. Evidence correlates an increase in patient falls, comorbidities, and hospital admission among this specific patient group. As a result, there is an increase in workload and injuries to staff as they tend to these patients. Healthcare facilities need to continuously update current patient handling programs and create specific policies for safely handling obese patients. Research suggests that Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Programs, as well as the Banner Mobility Assessment Tool (BMAT), have substantially decreased nurse injuries through a wide range of nursing specialties. …

The Sensory And Textural Evaluation Of A St. Louis Style Butter Cake Made With Greek Yogurt As A Fat Replacer, Caprisse Johnson
Scholars Week
In modern America, many nutrition-related health issues are on the rise, including diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Many nutrition professionals link the rise in these three diseases to the Western Diet, which includes a high fat and sugar content within its foods. Due to the increased consumption of this diet high in sugar and fat, obesity, heart disease, and diabetes rates seem to be rising. However, many people who eat this diet and are at risk for these complications, hesitate to change their diet because they feel that healthier alternatives bland in flavor or have a repugnant taste when compared …

Republicans, Rivers, And Racism: The French Revolution And The Early American South, Andrew Landreth
Scholars Week
This paper examines the political impact of the French Revolution and related events on the development of the American South in the early republic, roughly from 1789-1815. This paper argues that the French Revolution and its offshoots helped to sharpen early Southern sectionalism by reinforcing three characteristics that would soon define the region: republicanism, expansionism, and white racism.

This study aims to investigate how Flo from Progressive was portrayed in commercials, along with Flo’s influence on both Progressive and advertising in general. A content analysis of 11 commercials featuring Flo were analyzed. These commercials portrayed Flo as experienced with age, sexualized, white, fanatical, and needy. Flo influenced Progressive by achieving a brand character’s goals: build trust, approachability, reliability, and identity (Leonhardt & Cruz, 2017). Additionally, Progressive's profits increased after the introduction of Flo. Finally, research regarding women in advertising post-2008 …

Andrew Jackson And The Indian Removal Act Of 1830 Personal Agenda Or Territorial Expansion, Austin Valentine
Student Scholarship & Creative Works
For well over a century, historians have pondered Andrew Jackson’s motivation behind the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Was Andrew Jackson’s decision for a massive social cleansing of Native Americans motivated by a personal agenda or by American calls for westward expansion?
Through a brief analysis of Andrew Jackson’s long and winding road to the White House, I hope to shed light on Andrew Jackson and his call for the forced removal of Native American inhabitants residing east of the Mississippi River. With such, I hope to give the reader a better understanding of Jackson’s attitude, military strategies, calls for …
