Cyberbullying And Teenage Mental Health, Emma Renfro, Melony Shemberger Oct 2019

Cyberbullying And Teenage Mental Health, Emma Renfro, Melony Shemberger

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Abstract Cyberbullying is something that is becoming prevalent in today’s digital society. It is something that impacts more than one age group, but the primary age group seems to be aged 13-18. As a society, it is recognized that cyberbullying happens. However, how often does one stop to think deeper? In this research, I will approach cyberbullying from a mental health standpoint. I will demonstrate things such as why certain demographics are more susceptible to the impact of cyberbullying, what mental illnesses are caused by cyberbullying, and present statistics that, hopefully, motivate people to begin to combat this issue. Over …

Determination Of Cannabinoids, Cathinones, And Synthetic Fentanyls Using Wastewater-Based Epidemiology, Catherine O'Rourke, Bikram Subedi

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Unregulated new psychoactive substances (NPS) in “pure” or “preparation” forms are designed to mimic the effects of controlled substances, and are introduced and reintroduced in the market as a cheap substitute for established regulated drugs in quick succession to loophole the law enforcement efforts on combating drugs. For example, carfentanil, a synthetic opioid activates the opioid receptors similar to morphine but it is astoundingly potent compared to a typical drug of abuse (100 times more potent than fentanyl and 10,000 times more powerful than morphine). Based on the cost- and time-intensive forensic analysis, National Drug Early Warning System reported the …

Hemp As A Livestock Feedstuff: A Review Of Current Literature, Sarah Mead, Alyx Shultz Oct 2019

Hemp As A Livestock Feedstuff: A Review Of Current Literature, Sarah Mead, Alyx Shultz

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Hemp was removed from the list of controlled substances in the 2018 Farm Bill, making regulated hemp production legal in the United States. Kentucky agriculturalists and entrepreneurs are at the cutting edge of the United States hemp production and processing industries. Hemp production generally falls into one of three categories: grain, fiber, or floral (CBD extraction). Each production category also produces byproducts; one such byproduct is meal. In order to make hemp oil and fiber processing viable, markets for the remaining meal must be found. The high fiber, fat, and protein of hemp meal make it a potential feedstuff for …

Gender And Representation: Economic Performance And The Emergence Of Women In State Politics, Chris Jackson Oct 2019

Gender And Representation: Economic Performance And The Emergence Of Women In State Politics, Chris Jackson

Posters-at-the-Capitol

A plethora of literature in gender and representation has been devoted to understanding disparities that occur during campaigns. More recently, the shift has been toward candidate emergence and the decision of individual women to run in the United States. In this vein, we are curious whether women are likely to run for office following times of economic prosperity or disparity, respectively. We hypothesize that when the state of the economy is generally decreasing in terms of declining GDP per capita and growing unemployment rates, fewer women will emerge to run for office. In times of worse economic performance, we argued …

Memories Of The Great War: An Analysis Of Jackson Purchase Veterans’ Oral Histories Of Wwi, David Wallace, David Pizzo

Posters-at-the-Capitol

The First World War affected the lives of millions, creating collective memories of hardships, uncertainty, political tension, and animosity toward foreign enemies. In the United States, World War I was a turning point in the nation’s growth and development, but on a smaller scale it was a critical historical moment in the individual lives of the veterans who served. This research project will showcase the experiences of the Jackson Purchase’s WWI veterans with an emphasis on their perceptions during the war, their reasons for enlisting, the countless once-in-a-lifetime experiences they had along the way, the hardships they faced, and the …

Opioid And Non-Opioid Prescribing Rates For Ankle Fractures In Emergency Departments Across The United States Between 2006 And 2015, Lucy C. Bowers, Kyle B. Kosik Phd, Atc, Matt C. Hoch Phd, Atc, Phillip A. Gribble Phd, Atc, Alejandro G. Villasante Tezanos

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Context: An ankle fracture is a common injury observed in the Emergency Department (ED) and is often treated conservatively or surgically, depending on whether the fracture is stable. Opioids provide value for the management of acute musculoskeletal pain. However, prolong opioid use is associated with well-known consequences in the United States such as dependence, abuse and/or misuse. Considering these concerns and the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions for the treatment of acute pain, it is critical to identify the prescribing patterns for patients diagnosed with an ankle fracture in the ED. Objective: Describe the percentage of patients prescribed a …

Longitudinal Relationships Between Parent Factors, Children’S Bullying, And Victimization Behaviors, Esther K. Malm, Christopher C. Henrich

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Longitudinal data from NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development tested direct, indirect and reciprocal effects of maternal depressive symptoms, stress/support factors on child bullying and peer victimization through mother–child relationship quality at grades 3, 5, 6. Data from 828 mother-child dyads indicated small significant effects of some hypothesized pathways, including a small direct effect of maternal depressive symptoms at grade 3 on peer victimization at grade 5, but not on bullying behaviors. Mother–child relationship quality at grade 5 negatively predicted bullying at grade 6, but not peer victimization. There were small effects of bullying behaviors at grade …

Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children

A transdisciplinary team of candidates with teacher and social work educators describe their perspectives of trauma-informed teaching and intentions to use evidence-based practices in classrooms. We studied classroom management from a trauma-informed perspective in the first course in the program, then reflected back on these through a professional learning community created to intentionally focus on trauma informed teaching. We highlight findings around candidates’ perspectives and specific actions they attended to in order to incorporate those practices.

The Importance Of Teacher Behavior In Increasing Student Success: Are Teachers Prepared To Meet The Needs Of Students With Emotional Or Behavioral Disorders?, Justin T. Cooper Sep 2019

The Importance Of Teacher Behavior In Increasing Student Success: Are Teachers Prepared To Meet The Needs Of Students With Emotional Or Behavioral Disorders?, Justin T. Cooper

Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children

Despite the dissemination of specific instructional practices including High Leverage Practices and other pedagogical strategies that are considered fundamental to the success of students with emotional/behavioral disorders, research suggests that many of these practices are occurring in schools at unacceptably low rates. This research-to-practice gap is not a new phenomenon. This paper provides an overview of some of these specific teacher-driven instructional behaviors and the implications of the paucity of their use in schools. In addition, the importance of the role that teacher preparation programs play, and steps that they can take to alleviate the research-to-practice gap are discussed.

Music Therapy’S Role In The Education System, Madison Riley, Tori L. Colson, Moriah Smothers

Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children

Music therapy is a lesser-known and used related service, yet it provides significant benefits to students that have language, behavioral, and social needs. This article reviews the literature on music therapy, discusses its historical and theoretical roots, and examines its use in educational settings. Special attention is given to therapeutic practices that are geared toward students on the autism spectrum because their social and communication needs are often a good fit for music therapy practices. Recommendations on using music therapy in special and general education classrooms are also made. Additionally, recommendations for including music therapy content in teacher preparation programs …

A Cross Sectional Study Evaluating Psychosocial Job Stress And Health Risk In Emergency Department Nurses, Rupkatha Bardhan, Karen Heaton, Melissa Davis, Peter Chen, Dale A. Dickinson, Claudiu T. Lungu

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Nurses experience psychosocial work stress that may negatively affect physical and mental health over time. In this cross-sectional study we investigated prevalence of job stress and oxidative stress in nurses, and determined if significant relationships exist between higher job stress scores and demographic factors and working conditions. Emergency department nurses (n = 42) were recruited from a University Hospital following Institutional Review Board approval. Job stress indicators, effort–reward ratio and overcommitment were evaluated from survey questionnaires using the effort–reward imbalance model, and associations with age, sex, body mass index, and working conditions were measured by logistic regression analysis. Oxidative stress …

Recounting The Conversation: Learning How To Write A Literature Review, Alexandra O. Hendley Aug 2019

Recounting The Conversation: Learning How To Write A Literature Review, Alexandra O. Hendley

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

This in-class activity gives students practice summarizing, synthesizing, and evaluating information from numerous sources – skills needed when writing a literature review. As a lowstakes, collaborative, in-class writing task, this activity may also help alleviate some of the fears that students may have about writing. Writing manuals like Writing in Sociology (Edwards 2015) and Writing in Sociology: A Brief Guide (Smith-Lovin and Moskovitz 2017), refer to scholarly literatures as “conversations” occurring within a “party” or “room full of people.” Applying this metaphor, this exercise asks students to imagine themselves at a party, overhearing attendees’ remarks. Students get a list of …

Citizens’ Perceptions Of Government Policy Success: A Cross-National Study, Nurgul R. Aitalieva, Andrew Morelock Aug 2019

Citizens’ Perceptions Of Government Policy Success: A Cross-National Study, Nurgul R. Aitalieva, Andrew Morelock

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

What explains citizens’ perceptions of government policy success? To answer this question, we use multilevel modelling strategies to examine data gathered across 21 national samples from the 2006 International Social Survey Programme’s (ISSP) Role of Government IV module. Our dependent variable is an index of perceived governmental policy success in six areas. Our analysis reveals that citizens’ evaluations of the success of public policies vary within countries as well as between countries. Our multilevel models indicate that variation in perceptions within countries is largely a function of individual sociodemographic attributes and political attitudes. In contrast, across country variation in perceptions …

Asap: A Source Code Authorship Program, Matthew F. Tennyson Phd Aug 2019

Asap: A Source Code Authorship Program, Matthew F. Tennyson Phd

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Source code authorship attribution is the task of determining who wrote a computer program, based on its source code, usually when the author is either unknown or under dispute. Areas where this can be applied include software forensics, cases of software copyright infringement, and detecting plagiarism. Numerous methods of source code authorship attribution have been proposed and studied. However, there are no known easily accessible and user-friendly programs that perform this task. Instead, researchers typically develop software in an ad hoc manner for use in their studies, and the software is rarely made publicly available. In this paper, we present …

Mechanism Of Single-Stranded Dna Activation Of Recombinase Intein Splicing, Christopher W. Lennon, Matthew J. Stanger, Marlene Belfort Jul 2019

Mechanism Of Single-Stranded Dna Activation Of Recombinase Intein Splicing, Christopher W. Lennon, Matthew J. Stanger, Marlene Belfort

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Inteins, or intervening proteins, are mobile genetic elements translated within host polypeptides and removed through protein splicing. This self-catalyzed process breaks two peptide bonds and rejoins the flanking sequences, called N- and C-exteins, with the intein scarlessly escaping the host protein. As these elements have traditionally been viewed as purely selfish genetic elements, recent work has demonstrated that the conditional protein splicing (CPS) of several naturally occurring inteins can be regulated by a variety of environmental cues relevant to the survival of the host organism or crucial to the invading protein function. The RadA recombinase from the archaeon Pyrococcus horikoshii …

Into The Great Unknown: Crisis Communications And Fundraising After A Disaster, Darchelle Martin, Lori Goetsch

ALADN: Academic Library Advancement and Development Network 2019 Conference

After a fire devastated our main campus library on May 22, 2018, we are turning our misfortune into opportunity. While most libraries plan for years for a full renovation, we had mere months. And without our insurance settlement finalized our timelines for architectural planning, insurance negotiations and fundraising have been running simultaneously. As you can imagine, we’ve had endless challenges to overcome. Our presentation will focus on our fundraising and communication strategies. And while our situation is unique, we believe there are take-aways for any library.

Twenty Things: Archives And Development In Collaboration, Kim Fill, Caroline J. White

ALADN: Academic Library Advancement and Development Network 2019 Conference

Special collections librarians and archivists are committed to caring for their unique collections and making them accessible to users. Library development staff are equally dedicated to the library and its collections and services. Both may play roles in fostering relationships with donors and bringing in donations—but how and when do they need to really work together, and to do so effectively?

Kim Fill, Assistant Director of Development and Donor Relations, and Caroline White, Archives and Manuscript Librarian, both at UMass Amherst Libraries, have been colleagues for nearly seven years, and even they aren’t entirely sure what each other does. With …

Surviving An Anniversary: How Not To Go Crazy Fundraising For Digitization And Documentaries, Bruce Hallmark

ALADN: Academic Library Advancement and Development Network 2019 Conference

The role academic libraries play in celebrating significant college or university anniversaries varies widely. With Colorado State University’s 150th anniversary approaching in 2020, Morgan Library has undertaken a massive preservation project to digitize aging film and video necessary to create a documentary film commemorating our sesquicentennial. Fundraising for those endeavors involves the President’s Office and the politics of working with the University’s largest donors. Leveraging a high-profile occasion to the library’s benefit requires navigating bureaucracy and technology, managing expectations, coordinating promotions, and balancing urgent initiatives with ongoing development efforts.

Academic libraries undergo change at an almost constant rate, yet the effect of change can differ across various institutions. As technological and educational environments evolve, the impact to advancement activities can be overlooked if not kept in consideration as it relates to engaging donor investment. Strategically these opportunities for the organization may be hidden and not as visible to stakeholders as traditional or legacy options.

This panel will explore six of these broader academic library trends and lead discussion regarding impact to donors, potential modification to fundraising strategies and challenges to library administrators.
