Persistent Organic Chemicals In The Pacific Basin Countries: An Overview, Bommanna G. Loganathan Dec 2016

Persistent Organic Chemicals In The Pacific Basin Countries: An Overview, Bommanna G. Loganathan

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

The Pacific Basin is a unique geographical region representing tropical, temperate and polar zones. This region is home to 2/3 of world’s population and consists of rapidly growing economies (countries) and highly developed countries. The Pacific Basin countries have had a history of use of persistent organic chemicals (POCs) at varying proportions during the last five decades. Due to diverse climatic and socio-economic conditions, the environment and biota in different countries in this basin have varying degrees of environmental contamination and effects on wildlife and humans. In this chapter, the historical background of POCs including, discovery, production, use, regulations/restrictions imposed, …

Environmental Emission Of Pharmaceuticals From Wastewater Treatment Plants In The Usa, Bikram Subedi, Bommanna G. Loganathan Dec 2016

Environmental Emission Of Pharmaceuticals From Wastewater Treatment Plants In The Usa, Bikram Subedi, Bommanna G. Loganathan

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

The residual drugs, drug bioconjugates, and their metabolites, mostly from human and veterinary usage, are routinely flushed down the drain, and enter wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Increasing population, excessive use of allopathic medicine, continual introduction of novel drugs, and existing inefficient wastewater treatment processes result in the discharge of large volumes of pharmaceuticals and their metabolites from the WWTPs into the environment. The effluent from the WWTPs globally contaminate ~25% of rivers and the lakes. Pharmaceuticals in the environment, as contaminants of emerging concerns, behave as pseudo-persistent despite their relatively short environmental half-lives in the environment. Therefore, residual levels of …

Students’ Perceptions And Stigma Toward Those With Intellectual And Physical Disabilities, Brighton C. Hollingsworth

Scholars Week

Students’ Perceptions and Stigma Toward Those with Intellectual and Physical Disabilities

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that there is a negative impact on those who are labeled as having an intellectual or physical disability (Green, Davis, Karshmer, Marsh, & Straight, 2005). The purpose of this research was to learn more about the stigma against those with disabilities and how one can cope with this stigma.

METHODS: The subjects of this study were 80 General Psychology students. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions, which differed in which vignette received. The four vignettes described individuals with the disabilities of …

Adoption Statistics Analysis Using Geographic Information Systems, Ashtan H. Williams Nov 2016

Adoption Statistics Analysis Using Geographic Information Systems, Ashtan H. Williams

Scholars Week

This project highlights the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for non-locational data by displaying adoption statistics. All topics displayed according to a political boundary (state or country) to include percentage of population awaiting adoption, time from termination of parental rights to finalization of adoption. A GIS-based analysis conducted for this project compares the cost of adoption from within the United States international. There is a focus on types of adoptions like special needs and race specific to provide an overall understanding of adoption in hopes to raise awareness.

Mapping The Variability Of Soil Quality Indicators In Natural Versus Agricultural Ecosystems, Mary G. Derting Miss Nov 2016

Mapping The Variability Of Soil Quality Indicators In Natural Versus Agricultural Ecosystems, Mary G. Derting Miss

Scholars Week

Traditionally, Kentucky agriculture has focused on crop production and soil fertility while overlooking soil quality and its dependence on land management type. This research attempted to reveal the importance of land management types and their individual effects on physical soil quality indicators. The second objective of this study was to show the variance of physical soil quality indicators across different land managements by using layered maps. Such visual representation of the data along with statistical analysis also showed which soil quality parameters are more sensitive to change in land management type. Land management types included three undisturbed grassland and undisturbed …

"One Accord Of Sympathy": The Relationship Between Narrator, Reader, And Puritans, Brianna E. Taylor Nov 2016

"One Accord Of Sympathy": The Relationship Between Narrator, Reader, And Puritans, Brianna E. Taylor

Scholars Week

Ambiguous narration in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter creates a reader that is simultaneously an insider privy to uncertain narrative report and an outsider sympathetic to Hester’s ignominy. While current reader response criticism explores narrative techniques of ambiguity and sympathy in isolation, this paper analyzes how these techniques are used in conjunction to establish a relationship between narrator and reader. The narrator’s role as storyteller and gossip, accepting explanations of a rational contemporary audience and superstitious Puritans, both defies Puritan inflexibility and creates intimacy that includes readers in this community. At the same time, a sympathetic relationship with Hester distances …

Tb Screening Guidelines For Transitional Care Unit, Caleb E. Newcomer Nov 2016

Tb Screening Guidelines For Transitional Care Unit, Caleb E. Newcomer

Scholars Week

The basis of this research was the formation of new TB screening and risk assessment guidelines on a Transitional Care Unit within a medical center. Current evidence-based research studies helped to guide the recommendations for the policy changes based on their results and findings. The most pertinent policy changes are the treatment offered for patients suspected with HIV, the rigorous use of the Risk Assessment Tool, and BAMT testing for TB.

Personal Protective Equipment Use For Patients With Clostridium Difficile, Mallory L. Compton Nov 2016

Personal Protective Equipment Use For Patients With Clostridium Difficile, Mallory L. Compton

Scholars Week

In researching the literature on correct PPE by healthcare staff when a patient has C. diff. I have found that the policy on PPE for patients with C. diff at Baptist Health Paducah is compliant. The theoretical framework used for this research is that of Imogene King. Their policy is evidence based and is also cost effective when it comes to preventing the spread of infection from patient to patient. There is no need for change to this policy at this time because it is supported by evidence in the literature.

Photovoice Of Obesity On Murray State University's Campus, Karley Wray, Melissa Godby Nov 2016

Photovoice Of Obesity On Murray State University's Campus, Karley Wray, Melissa Godby

Scholars Week

The issue we decided to discuss on campus using Photovoice was obesity. Obesity is becoming a very big topic that we all need to start focusing on. Obesity is defined as having a BMI at or above 30. This is becoming more common with our cultural change. We are becoming more fast food eaters and are not exercising as much as we should. It is even getting worse on college campuses. We all knew of what was called the freshmen 15, but now it is becoming a four year 15. It is becoming more common for college students to become …

Substance Abuse, Javarius Hodge Nov 2016

Substance Abuse, Javarius Hodge

Scholars Week

- One of the biggest issues in the Murray community is substance and drug abuse. In our community we have a lot of college students and older people in the community that are disabled or retired. College students in our community strive very hard to graduate or to even complete a simple assignment. For some students, adderol and vyvanse is the trigger to get them to be motivated enough to do their work or to just complete college because it helps them focus on and complete their work. They also sometimes take Xanax to help them sleep through the night …

The Importance Of Hand Washing On Regional Campus, Katelynn R. Dowdy Nov 2016

The Importance Of Hand Washing On Regional Campus, Katelynn R. Dowdy

Scholars Week

Hand washing is when you wet your hands under warm water, add soap and rub hands together for 20 seconds or longer, rinse, dry with paper towel, and finally turn off running water with that paper towel you just dried your hands off with. Hand washing is something that helps prevent the spread of germs that lead to illness. This is a health problem that could anywhere and everywhere in the community, but I specifically looked into the Paducah-Murray regional campus.

Photovoice is a process where members of a community take pictures that give some insight on what they believe …

Seat Belt Safety, Houston J. Hartz Nov 2016

Seat Belt Safety, Houston J. Hartz

Scholars Week

The issue that I decided to discuss is seat belt safety. According to the CDC, 21,022 vehicle passengers died in motor vehicle crashes in 2014 with more than half of these resulting from the individual not being restrained in the vehicle. A car crash isn’t planned, it can happen at any time to anyone. The only way to prepare for something like that to happen is to always take the right precautions which includes putting on your seatbelt every time you get in the vehicle. Over 2.3 million drivers and passengers were treated in emergency departments in 2014. Young adult …

Assets And Barriers To Osteoarthritis, Allison K. Wiles Nov 2016

Assets And Barriers To Osteoarthritis, Allison K. Wiles

Scholars Week

Osteoarthritis has remained a prevailing health concern in our society for many years. OA is most commonly seen in middle aged men and women suffering from pain and stiffness in the hip, knee, and thumb areas. Risk factors for OA include age, obesity, previous joint injuries, overuse of joint areas, and weak muscles. If not treated, OA could lead to permanent discomfort and pain, and potentially develop into depression, lowered quality of life, or a need for long-term home health care.

By providing photo footage of every day health care issues, Photo voice persuades community members to change habits and …

Obesity Due To Poor Snack Choices And Lack Of Physical Activity, Kaleb S. Adams Nov 2016

Obesity Due To Poor Snack Choices And Lack Of Physical Activity, Kaleb S. Adams

Scholars Week

Obesity Due to Poor Snack Choices and Lack of Physical Activity

A chronic issue in my immediate community, Murray State University, is obesity due to unhealthy diets and a generally lethargic lifestyle. The muffin picture represents the average healthiness of snacks available on campus. While students are working towards their education on campus it has become increasingly difficult to acquire snacks that are both convenient and health conscious. Places such as the T-Room cater towards less healthy foods by making them far more available and also making them much less expensive. For a student to get a quick lunch consisting …

Fast Way To Health, Angelika Ford Nov 2016

Fast Way To Health, Angelika Ford

Scholars Week

A health issue that I am passionate about and wish to raise awareness about to make a difference in Murray is increase obesity due to food choices and low gym attendance. I would like to change the way people eat fast food. My first picture is a picture of the outside drive through at McDonald’s during lunch hour. I believe this is a barrier because there are many cars at the drive through order lanes. People are eating on the go; thus they are not spending time sitting down to enjoy the food they are consuming. This situation happens because …
