Stress In College Students: Worse Than The "Freshman 15?", Kristen Higgins
Stress In College Students: Worse Than The "Freshman 15?", Kristen Higgins
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
College students experience more change within a few years than most other age groups. This change, among other aspects, can cause increased amounts of stress (Lau et al, 2006). Past research has indicated that certain individuals lack the coping skills necessary to deal with stress adequately, causing a wide range of negative effects (D’Zurilla & Sheedy, 1991; Ross, Niebling, & Heckert, 1999). Brougham, Zail, Mendoza, and Miller (2009) also found significant genetic differences between males and females and their use of coping mechanisms. This current study examined the effects of different coping mechanisms on stress levels in college students, as …

American Bolsheviki: The Beginnings Of The First Red Scare, 1917 To 1918, Jonathan Dunning
Scholars Week
A consensus has developed among historians that in the early months of 1919, widespread panic consumed the American public and government as many came to fear a Bolshevik coup of the United States government and the undermining of the American way of life, and this fear persisted until 1920. Known as the First Red Scare, this period became one of the most well-known episodes of American fear of Communism in US history. With this focus on the events of 1919 to 1920, however, historians of the First Red Scare have often ignored the initial American reaction to the October Revolution …
Exalted And Debased: Psychological/Sexual Conflict As Bildungsroman In Half Of A Yellow Sun, Anne Lance
Exalted And Debased: Psychological/Sexual Conflict As Bildungsroman In Half Of A Yellow Sun, Anne Lance
Scholars Week
While many still view the Bildungsroman, novels of formation or coming of age stories, as the purview of stuffy formation novels like Dickens’ Great Expectations or Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, there is significant scholarship that suggests a recent revolution in the genre that centers women, people of color, and males in post-colonial or war-torn spaces.
My paper examines Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s 2006 novel Half of a Yellow Sun as an example of a Bildungsroman through the focalization of one of the main characters, Ugwu, as he endures two psychologically conflicting sexual experiences, one …

Can, Cup, Or Bottle? The Influence Of Service Vessel On Consumer Perceptions Of Taste And Willingness To Pay, Sarah Lefebvre, Marissa Orlowski
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
This study examines the influence of beverage service vessel on taste evaluations and willingness to pay through two experiments, each with four conditions: an aluminum can, a glass cup, a plastic cup, and a glass bottle. Study 1, a virtual scenario-based design with 141 participants, showed that taste expectations and willingness to pay were lowest for the beverage served in the aluminum can and that taste expectations mediated the effect of beverage vessel on willingness to pay. Study 2, a lab-based experiment with 82 participants, assessed taste perceptions and willingness to pay. Study 2 replicated the results of Study 1 …
Epideictic Rhetoric And British Citizenship Practices Remembering British Heroes From The 1857 Indian Uprising At Civic Celebrations, Danielle Nielsen
Epideictic Rhetoric And British Citizenship Practices Remembering British Heroes From The 1857 Indian Uprising At Civic Celebrations, Danielle Nielsen
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
Epideixis is generally understood as ceremonial rhetoric that praises or blames. When examined through the lens of civic celebrations such as the Coronation Durbars in fin de siècle colonial India or the protection of Confederate monuments, epideictic rhetoric instructs the audience to uphold what are purported to be the community’s common values. This educational epideixis, however, also exposes veiled anxieties not commonly associated with a seemingly ceremonial speech act. This new understanding of epideictic should encourage rhetoricians to further question rhetors’ use of epideixis and interrogate other aims in those speech acts.

The Other Side Of Socioeconomic Status, Jessica Madding
The Other Side Of Socioeconomic Status, Jessica Madding
Integrated Studies
Socioeconomic status is often thought of in the most basic meaning, financial fluidity. While money does buy access to a multitude of educationally relevant experiences and resources, money can not buy things like cultural awareness, peer and social interactions, life experiences or familial support. These things that come secondary in the discussion of socioeconomic status are imperative for educators to be aware of and from educators to seek to confront. There are many educational strategies and supportive actions educators can take to support students who lack in these area.

Abstract
There have been misconceptions about the purpose of early childhood education and early childhood centers and how the program is designed. Many people believe that the early childhood education process is easy because young children do not really learn, but simply spend their time playing at early childhood centers. As a result, many people believe they can teach their child without the assistance of an early childhood center but what caregivers don’t know is that there is more to Early Childhood Education than just playing games. Early Childhood Education helps young children give them a head start on giving …

Abstract
We are taught early in our education that the United States of America was founded by immigrants. The United States is a very diverse country that people of other countries see as a land of opportunity. However, not everyone that enters into our beautiful country enter legally. Many residents of other countries are so desperate to provide a better life of opportunities to their families that they will do anything to make that happen. Even if it means breaking, the immigration laws in place by the United States and enter illegally by crossing the border. Many reasons play a …

School Social Workers: Important Assets In Rural Areas, Dana C. Branson
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
As the American educational system continues to evolve and take on more social service responsibilities for students, their families, and the community, the need for school social workers has intensified. However, the demand considerably exceeds developed positions for school social workers. The increase in awareness of childhood trauma, toxic stress, poverty, and potential to spill over into the classroom places schools in a position where they need to be responsive to students’ multi-faceted needs. This conceptual article will discuss the overwhelming need for school social workers, barriers to obtaining school social workers, and the benefits school social workers can bring.

Rural Social Work And Environmental Justice, Pamela C. Twiss
Rural Social Work And Environmental Justice, Pamela C. Twiss
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
While social work education and literature includes a growing body of work focused on environmental justice and the role of social work in addressing environmental injustices, limited attention has been paid to the disproportionate impact of these issues in rural areas. Many rural places can be more accurately described as rural-industrial in character. They produce the world’s food through highly mechanized agro-businesses, its timber, and much of its fossil fuels through large mining and drilling operations, each presenting threats to the surrounding environment and local peoples. This work describes environmental issues and injustices common to select large-scale rural industries, discusses …

Scott’s Run has a rich history as a tight-knit, coal-built community in the heart of rural Appalachia. To learn more about the lives of the community members during the Depression Era, an interdisciplinary research team from five departments at a major university in the state conducted an oral history project focused on historical photos of the community. Individuals who grew up in the area reviewed photographs taken early in the 20th century and provided information and shared stories related to the time and place of the images for context. The interviews uncovered key themes that told a much more …

Rural Social Work In Scotland, Colin Turbett
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
The idea that social work in rural areas in Scotland might best be based on different approaches to those used in urban areas (where the vast majority of the population live) has received scant attention in recent years. There is a dearth of research on which to plan services that fit with such a notion. However, given the Scottish Government’s emphasis on community engagement, this is of interest. This Insight looks at the particularities of the rural context, the policy framework, and goes on to describe approaches that can be used to help social workers living and working in rural …

Teaching Music Literacy In Beginning Band: A Review Of Method Books And A Proposed Alternative Method, Haley Caroline Harrington
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to review current band methodologies, specifically for the beginning band, and identify the current process of teaching music literacy. For beginning bands, music literacy instruction is a powerful tool music students use to be successful at sight-reading. It cannot be assumed that simply because students perform music on instruments, they also will achieve high ratings at sight-reading. Brain-compatible learning may offer a solution in addressing the issue with how beginning band students are taught to read music. Therefore, this study will propose a more effective method, applying the Music Learning Theory of Edwin Gordon …
A People So Different From Themselves: British Attitudes Towards India And The Power Dynamics Of The East India Company, Eric Gray
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Gray, Eric, A People So Different from Themselves: British Attitudes Towards India and the Power Dynamics of the East India Company. Master of Arts (History), April, 2019, Murray State University, Murray, Kentucky.
Today, many characteristics of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century British Raj are well ingrained in the public consciousness, particularly Victorian Era Britons’ general disdain for numerous aspects of the many cultures found on the Indian Subcontinent. Moreover, while many characteristics of the preceding East India Company’s rule in India were no less exploitative of Indian peoples, evidence shows a much different relationship between British and Indian cultures during the …
Nucleophilic Phosphine Addition: Exploration Of Novel Alkyne Transformations, Brett Pierce
Nucleophilic Phosphine Addition: Exploration Of Novel Alkyne Transformations, Brett Pierce
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Nucleophilic phosphine catalysis has demonstrated its value in synthetic chemistry by allowing for mild carbon-carbon bond formation. Many phosphine-catalyzed reactions with electron-deficient alkynes have been reported in recent years, leading to an array of valuable products. Stemming from this field of study, phosphines can also be utilized as mild chemoselective reductants for alkynes, resulting in the corresponding alkenes. Herein, a mild, stereoselective, phosphine-mediated partial reduction of alkynes to (E)- and (Z)-alkenes is described. Specifically, a general method for the partial reduction of ynoates to the corresponding (E)- and (Z)-enoate, …
