Professional Practices, Xek K.D. Rychtevorik May 2017

Professional Practices, Xek K.D. Rychtevorik

Professional Practices (ART 399)

I have always been interested in storytelling and books of a wide variety of genres. More specifically, I am attracted to well-developed narrative illustrations that enhance and expand the intent of a story. Therefore, much of my artmaking is influenced by western and eastern animation, sci-fi/horror literature, and comics/mangas from companies like Shonen Jump, Marvel, Dark Horse, Funimation, and DC. I’m strongly influenced by the artists known as Simon Bisley and Josan Gonzales for similar and different reasons. They both have a vivid and graphic way of drawing that has a lot of movement and intensity to it. Bisley’s vibrant …

Vegetation Habitat Mapping Of Mammoth Cave National Park Using Multi-Date Landsat-8 Imagery And Lidar Data, Hongli Yang Apr 2017

Vegetation Habitat Mapping Of Mammoth Cave National Park Using Multi-Date Landsat-8 Imagery And Lidar Data, Hongli Yang

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

Vegetation habitat mapping can be regarded as a model predicting the geographic distribution of plant cover types from mapped environmental variables. This paper discusses three environmental factors- slope, aspect and bedrock geology that determined different habitat types in Mammoth Cave National Park. The variation of aspect and slope can largely determine the amount of solar radiation and water available to vegetation, which influences the contrasting habitat types formed in a long term. Bedrock geology, one of the most influential factor in the study area, primarily controls the soil types and drainage conditions that support the various habitat types. The habitat …

Spider's Lace, Rachel Schmidt Apr 2017

Spider's Lace, Rachel Schmidt

B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)

My current work is about identical lessons learned by separate people from different personal experiences. Interviews with friends and family are conducted to identify a lesson both me and the subject of the interview have learned and combine the separate experiences into one story. Because the story exists in a place beyond any one human character, they are transformed into animal fables, which are then illustrated with print based installations.

The stories are built around what the interviewee would most like to teach to someone younger. The fables exist in a world where these lessons become established as rules in …

Autistic Traits And Executive Functioning, Meagan Smith Apr 2017

Autistic Traits And Executive Functioning, Meagan Smith

Scholars Week

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a term used to encompass all of the varying degrees of the developmental disorder known as Autism. Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder struggle with areas of executive functioning such as cognitive flexibility, planning, visual/visuo-spatial working memory, and verbal fluency compared to typically-developing individuals. This research project seeks to measure the amount of Autistic-like traits/tendencies of individuals who are not diagnosed with Autism Spectrum disorder and compare their level of Autistic tendencies to their ability to perform various cognitive tasks. Participants will first take the Autism Quotient--a questionnaire determining their level of autistic-like traits. Following this, participants …

Out Of The Ash, Amanda Kaler Combs Mar 2017

Out Of The Ash, Amanda Kaler Combs

B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)

Artist books and boxes are intrinsically dualistic. They compel the viewer to interact in an intimate and revealing way; but at the same time the outer surface forms a protective barrier between the viewer and its contents. Through my work I attempt to reconcile two opposing aspects of my personality; the need to control my environment and my appreciation for unexpected outcomes. Artist books and boxes, via assemblages, become, in my work, a metaphor for cognitive dichotomy.

Drawing inspiration from assemblage artists like Paula MacGregor and Joseph Cornell, I explore the relationship between objects and their contents. I use cast-off …

Heartfelt Notions, Savannah Young

B.A./B.S. Practicum Group Exhibit (ART 499)

I'm interested in bringing the narrative of life into my work as well as paying tribute to the complex beauty of the world around us. I often focus on one subject in depth to give emphasis to their story in particular, whether it be a place or a living thing. I want my audience to read into the details of my drawings as they would a novel; finding the bits of information that I include to inform the viewer of both creature and environment. I think of it as instigating a dialogue between people and the things that live alongside …

The Importance Of Intentional Language And Literacy Development In Early Childhood, Shannon M. Alsman Jan 2017

The Importance Of Intentional Language And Literacy Development In Early Childhood, Shannon M. Alsman

Integrated Studies

Abstract

Literacy and language development in early childhood has been shown to be closely correlated with future academic performance (Gullo, 2013). A strong foundation in literacy and language has the potential to affect all areas of educational growth (Copple & Bredekamp, 2009). Moreover, the role of the adult in facilitating the process of literacy and language development is highly critical for success (Heroman & Jones, 2010). Developmental theorists have variations in their views as to how children develop and learn, yet one common denominator exists with them all—the adult’s role in guiding children’s learning (Charlesworth, 2008). Researchers have compiled a …

A Place For Organic Farming In The Big Market?, John Cox Jan 2017

A Place For Organic Farming In The Big Market?, John Cox

Integrated Studies

Farming is as vital to human existence as the air we breathe, and in turn, farming can and does definitely affect the air we breathe. It keeps our planet going and is a worldwide necessity and without farming, the human race would rapidly cease to exist. There is, however, debate regarding if we can continue to exist with the current farming practices found in the majority of farms worldwide and particularly within the United States. Therefore, the need to adapt and/or to control the natural impacts on farming is an ongoing and vitally important endeavor. The primary focus of this …

Precision Agriculture, Nathan Griffith

Integrated Studies

Farmers are looking for the best way to maximize profits and spend the least amount of money due to the constantly changing market in agriculture. Many different options have been explored from limiting herbicide programs to reducing rates on chemicals and trying to use to equipment longer to lower the cost. However, none of these have given results as expected. Precision agriculture is one fast growing industry; from auto guidance to completely autonomous tractors, it has no end in sight. Precision agriculture can be defined as the integration of information and production based farming system to achieve increased productivity while …

A Guide For Understanding And Coping With Grief: A Christian's Perspective, Charles Reynolds

Integrated Studies

Abstract

Grief and loss touches the life of every single person during their lifetime, however few are prepared to cope with the effects of their grief and the grief of others. People generally are ill- informed and unprepared to face grief and its effects because they don’t feel comfortable talking or reading about death and loss. Most literature concerning grief is scholarly and heard to understand and few counselors and clergy are trained in grief work. Terms relating to grief and the grieving process are defined and put into context. The theories and therapies associated with grief and bereavement are …

The utilization of computer technology applied to historical artifact investigation has opened a number of locked doors despite numerous concerns by critics. Through the use of computer technology, both scientist and historians now have the ability to perform in-depth investigations into aspects surrounding various questionable historical occurrences. However, some critics feel the application of computer technology could bring unwanted answers to some historically significant events.

In this paper I will introduce my research by initially giving a brief background into the evolution of computer technology applied to historical investigation. Through the explanation of various technological tools of the trade, I …

Developing A Woodlot For Sustainable Use, Jennifer D. Duncan Jan 2017

Developing A Woodlot For Sustainable Use, Jennifer D. Duncan

Integrated Studies

In this project several species of livestock will be used to develop a raw woodlot into a sustainable farm whose profits will benefit the farm family and the local community. The social normalcies of today allow people to purchase meat from a supermarket never knowing how the animal was raised or treated. Children and young adults are raised in a society that does not understand the hard work and dedication it takes for their food to be grown and processed. Whole animal butchery has become a thing of the past; much of the animal is wasted when sent to commercial …

The Power Of Nonverbal Communication, Samantha Lawrence Jan 2017

The Power Of Nonverbal Communication, Samantha Lawrence

Integrated Studies

“Donald Sessions said, “Connection even for a brief moment produces the powerful enchantment of presence,” (Baumgardner, 2017). The connection an individual makes with one another is through communication; whether it is verbal or nonverbal. A review of current journals on the effects nonverbal communication has on religion, workplace interactions, peer friendships, and family relationships was conducted. During the review it was found nonverbal communication makes an impact on the type of individuals in another’s life whether it is consciously or unconsciously done. It was discovered individuals leave a lasting impression with their audience and they do so with the type …

Instructional Technology Is A Vital Tool In Today’S Classroom, Austin Wynn Jan 2017

Instructional Technology Is A Vital Tool In Today’S Classroom, Austin Wynn

Integrated Studies

For my project, I am going to be talking about instructional technology. Before being in the program I was once an elementary education major and I thought that technology in the classroom had served a major role in today’s education. According to the Association for Educational Communications and Technology: “Instructional technology is the theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management, and evaluation of processes and resources for learning.” Instructional technology is important in today’s classroom because it gives students another way to learn and comprehend ideas in learning about different topics. If I decide to go back to elementary …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Coalescing Of Non-Biblical And Biblical Principles To Maximize Workplace Productivity, Ryan Stanger

Integrated Studies

The relationship between leadership, management and communication theories and practices that result in productive work environments are explored. The analysis includes various business cultures, leadership strategies, management tactics, training methods, and philosophies that reflect the workplace culture most employees prefer. Research suggests that Christian business leaders can thrive in a secular marketplace and they can have just as much success leading teams as non-Christian leaders. Research validates the premise that a workplace environment built on Christian principles will not only succeed in the basic sense, but it can thrive. This paper is a comparative analysis of Biblical and non-Biblical perspectives …

A Review Of The Occurrence Of Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products In Indian Water Bodies, Keshava Balakrishna, Amlan Rath, Yerabham Praveenkumarreddy, Keerthi Siri Guruge, Bikram Subedi

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Little information exists on the occurrence and the ultimate fate of pharmaceuticals in the water bodies in India despite being one of the world leaders in pharmaceutical production and consumption. This paper has reviewed 19 published reports of pharmaceutical occurrence in the aquatic environment in India [conventional activated sludge wastewater treatment plants (WTPs), hospital WTPs, rivers, and groundwater]. Carbamazepine (antipsychoactive), atenolol (antihypertensive), triclocarban and triclosan (antimicrobials), trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole (antibacterials), ibuprofen and acetaminophen (analgesics), and caffeine (stimulant) are the most commonly detected at higher concentrations in Indian WTPs that treat predominantly the domestic sewage. The concentration of ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, amoxicillin, …

Social Communication And Technology, Lesli G. Hughes

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Research has been well documented as to the effects of screen time on mental health, physical health, cognitive development, and social development. However, little research exists as to the effects of screen time on the nonverbal aspects of communication, specifically eye gaze. In order to inform speech language pathologists when treating children with language and pragmatic disorders, this study examined the eye gaze of participants during physical play. Twenty-six participants from 5 to 8 years of age were recruited from a western Kentucky school. Results of eye gaze durations in participants were compared to screen time amounts in the home. …
