Tri structural isotropic (TRISO)-coated fuel particles are designed for use in high-temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactors, featuring a structural SiC layer that may be exposed to oxygen-rich environments over 1000 °C. Surrogate TRISO particles were tested in 0.2–20 kPa O2 atmospheres to observe the differences in oxidation behavior. Oxide growth mechanisms remained consistent from 1200–1600 °C for each PO2, with activation energies of 228 ± 7 kJ/mol for 20 kPa O2 and 188 ± 8 kJ/mol for 0.2 kPa O2. At 1600 °C, kinetic analysis revealed a change in oxide growth mechanisms between 0.2 and 6 kPa O2. In 0.2 kPa …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The behavior of impurities in cast copper was investigated to simulate production with increased utilization of secondary sources within the framework of a circular economy. The incorporation of impurities, particularly Ni, Sn, and Sb, from recycled Cu may significantly impact the electrorefining process. In this study, commercial anodes were doped with Ni, Sn, and Sb concentrations of 2500–6500 g/t, 300–900 g/t, and 450–950 g/t, respectively. Anode concentrations of Pb and Bi were maintained at 1000 g/t and 350 g/t, respectively. As concentrations were examined at two levels, 860 or 1700 g/t, depending on the commercial anode used to create the …

For the first time, ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composite bars were tested inside an arc-jet facility to investigate the impact of oxidation damage on strength retention. The composite bars, which were based on a ZrB2 / SiC matrix reinforced with 45 vol% carbon fibers, were produced by slurry impregnation and sintering. The first batch was tested under 3-point (pt) bending, and two additional batches were exposed to plasma of dissociated air up to a temperature of 2200 °C for 2 min or 2.2 min and then subjected to 3-pt bending. More than 75% of the initial strength was retained even …

Effects Of Gypsum And Limestone On Early-Age Hydration And Strength Optimization In Belite Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cement, Sai Akshay Ponduru, Bryan K. Aylas-Paredes, Taihao Han, Advaith Neithalath, Narayanan Neithalath, Gaurav Sant, Aditya Kumar
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Belite calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSAB), an alternative to Portland cement, exhibits excellent strength at both early and later ages. However, due to its high belite content, the carbon reduction from this type of cement is not sufficient when compared to other alternative cements. To further enhance CSAB's sustainability, this study investigates the performance of CSAB when partially replaced by low-carbon mineral additives (i.e., limestone and gypsum). The primary objective is to identify the optimal mixture design by incorporating gypsum and limestone to formulate a sustainable binder that maintains high compressive strength. The CSAB is replaced (with both additives) by up …

Research On Wireless Monitoring System For Internal Temperature Field Of Coal Gangue Mountain, Xiaofei Liu, Chunhao Liang, Jifa Qian, Xiaolin Li, Xuemei Li, Baoli Li, Guang Xu, Bin Zhou
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In the long-term accumulation process, coal gangue can lead to severe consequences such as spontaneous combustion and explosions due to external factors. Additionally, the coal gangue that ignites spontaneously significantly pollutes the land and groundwater, causing serious risks to the health and safety of individuals living and working in the vicinity. Therefore, to mitigate the risk of spontaneous combustion resulting from the long-term accumulation of coal gangue, a monitoring system based on LoRa wireless communication technology is proposed to collect and monitor the internal temperature of coal gangue mountains in real time. In the laboratory, active temperature rise monitoring was …

Predicting The High Temperature Deformation Behavior Of Haynes282 By A Dislocation-Density Based Crystal Plasticity Model, Tianju Chen, Huadong Fu, Shujing Dong, Yue Zhou, Yijia Gu, Caizhi Zhou, Ridwan Sakidja
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Mechanical behavior of Haynes282 is heavily dependent upon the microstructure state, calling for mesoscale model to study the relationship between the underlying microstructure and macroscopic performance. In this work, we employ crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) to explore the deformation mechanisms of Hanyes282 subjected to tensile (short-term) and creep (long-term) tests. Haynes282 is a newly developed Ni-based superalloy, containing relatively low volume fraction (≤20%) of spherical γ′ precipitate phase. A dislocation-density based model is developed to describe the tensile and the creep behavior, where a dimension reduction algorithm is proposed to obtain more accurate inter-particle spacing. Furthermore, dislocation-particle interaction …
Nonlinear Self-Synchronizing Current Control For Single-Phase Ac Inverters, Shruti Pandey, Michael Mclntyre
Nonlinear Self-Synchronizing Current Control For Single-Phase Ac Inverters, Shruti Pandey, Michael Mclntyre
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Grid-connected single-phase inverters require accurate phase detection for synchronization and power control. Traditionally, phase-locked loops (PLLs) are used to estimate grid parameters. This paper proposes a novel approach that determines the grid phase angle using only current feedback, eliminating the need for grid voltage measurements or cascaded control schemes. The proposed method integrates a phase angle observer with a current controller to regulate real and reactive power. Lyapunov stability analysis and hardware experiments validate the effectiveness of the approach.

Anderson Transition For Light In A Three-Dimensional Random Medium, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao, Sergey E. Skipetrov
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We study Anderson transition for light in three dimensions by performing large-scale simulations of electromagnetic wave transport in disordered ensembles of perfect-electric-conducting spatially overlapping spheres. A mobility edge that separates diffusive transport and Anderson localization is identified, revealing a sharp transition from diffusion to localization for light. Critical behavior in the vicinity of the mobility edge is well described by a single parameter scaling law. The critical exponent is found to be consistent with the value known for the Anderson transition of the orthogonal universality class. Statistical distribution of total transmission at the mobility edge is described without any fit …

Dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs), characterized by a high specific surface area and abundant hydroxyl groups, offer a promising approach to enhancing the performance of amphiphilic polymers in challenging enhanced oil recovery (EOR) conditions. In this study, DMSNs were successfully synthesized, and systematically evaluated for their impact on the solution properties of a betaine amphiphilic polymer (PADC). The unique "flower-like" mesoporous structure of DMSNs provided approximately 7-fold higher surface area than conventional SiO2, facilitating enhanced polymer-nanoparticle interactions. The DMSN/PADC composite system exhibited significantly improved viscosity, salt resistance, thermal tolerance, and shear resistance compared to PADC and SiO2/PADC systems. Quantum chemical …

Nonaqueous redox flow batteries (NARFBs) have been plagued by the lack of appropriate separators to prevent crossover. In this article, the synthesis and characterization of poly(norbornene) (PNB) anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) were studied. PNB is a copolymer of butyl norbornene (BuNB) and bromobutyl norbornene (BrBuNB) with varying amounts of tetramethyl hexadiamine cross-linker. The performance of the AEMs was investigated in nonaqueous redox flow batteries under ideal conditions. Performance evaluation encompassed several key factors, including durability in a nonaqueous solvent, charge-carrying ions permeability, electric cell resistance, crossover of redox-active molecules, and mechanical properties. The BuNB-based AEMs outperformed the commercial Fumasep membrane in …

Undergraduate computer science programs worldwide struggle to attract and retain underrepresented students for many reasons. Culture, stereotype threats, uneven gender and racial representations, lack of role models, and uncertain career prospects for minority groups are among the many reasons behind this situation. Many computer science programs are trying to change course through strategies to foster equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), aimed at improving outreach, recruitment, admissions, and retention of underrepresented students. EDI approaches may also include modifications to the undergraduate computer science curriculum. However, if not properly planned, these modifications risk amplifying existing stereotypes rather than producing positive change [38]. …

Alterations in mitochondrial function are the linchpin in numerous disease states including in the development of chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain (CIPN), a major dose-limiting toxicity of widely used chemotherapeutic cytotoxins. In CIPN, mitochondrial dysfunction is characterized by deficits in mitochondrial bioenergetics (e.g., decreased ATP production) that are thought to drive the degeneration of the peripheral nerve sensory axon terminal sensory arbors in the skin (the intraepidermal nerve fibers; IENFs) and induce abnormal spontaneous discharge in peripheral nerve sensory axons. Preserving mitochondrial function is anticipated to prevent CIPN. We have now discovered that the G-protein-coupled receptor, A3 adenosine receptor subtype (A3AR), is …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Achiral metasurfaces with near-field optical chirality have attracted great attention in molecular sensing and chiral emission control. Here, the circular dichroism (CD) response of an achiral metasurface induced by spatially selective coupling with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) molecules is demonstrated. A designed achiral metasurface with a V-shaped resonator exhibits large optical chirality with a strongly dissymmetric distribution under circular polarization. By introducing a PMMA molecule layer on top of the metasurface, which covers the area with large optical chirality, CD in absorption of 0.38 and a dissymmetric factor of optical chirality gc of 0.16 are obtained. Furthermore, an analysis of the …

Serverless computing streamlines application deployment by removing the need for infrastructure management, but fluctuating workloads make resource allocation challenging. To solve this, we propose an adaptive workload manager that intelligently balances workloads, optimizes resource use, and adapts to changes with auto-scaling, ensuring efficient and reliable serverless performance. Preliminary experiments demonstrate an ≈ 0.6X% and 2X% improvement in execution time and resource utilization compared to the First-Come-First Serve (FCFS) scheduling algorithm.

The rapid shift from internal combustion engine vehicles to battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs) presents considerable challenges, such as limited charging points (CPs), unpredictable wait times for charging, and difficulty in selecting appropriate CPs for EVs. To address these challenges, we propose a novel end-to-end framework, called Stable Matching based EV Charging Assignment (SMEVCA) that efficiently assigns charge-seeking EVs to CPs with the assistance of roadside units (RSUs). The proposed framework operates within a subscription-based model, ensuring that the subscribed EVs complete their charging within a predefined time limit enforced by a service level agreement (SLA). The framework SMEVCA employs a …

Many mixed-criticality system models drop all jobs of low-criticality tasks when a criticality mode switch occurs, ensuring that high-criticality tasks still can meet their deadlines in the new mode. However, this means that even important low-criticality tasks are discarded, which may not be acceptable in some systems in practice. This paper addresses that distinction between criticality and importance through a new Inelastic Graceful Earliest Deadline First with Virtual Deadlines (IG-EDF-VD) scheme that upon a criticality mode switch only discards the least important low-criticality tasks necessary to ensure feasibility. Moreover, we consider elastic scheduling within our mixed-criticality model (EG-EDF-VD), using compression …

A comprehensive view of whole-brain amino acid levels holds the potential to provide valuable insights into the brain's state, given the mutual interconnections through metabolism, food intake, and neurotransmission. We tested this concept by evaluating free amino acid levels in single Drosophila brains across 24 h and at two different ages. A large proportion of these amino acids displayed time-of-day variations, and a subset exhibited age-dependent variations. Cross-correlation analysis of the data sets confirmed broad time-of-day and age dependent interconnections between amino acids. Factor Analysis of Mixed Data revealed further data structuration along key amino acids. For example, 50% of …

Spacecraft designers and operators use micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) risk assessments to predict the probability that an MMOD particle impact will cause a critical failure to their systems. An important aspect of MMOD risk and associated requirements is the treatment of uncertainty, often difficult to quantify, or even estimate, for many elements of MMOD risk. This paper describes recent efforts to estimate uncertainties in inputs to the MMOD risk assessment process for a portion of the planned Mars Sample Return (MSR) campaign. The uncertainty bounds developed were used to examine their effect on overall mission MMOD risk.

We present a general version of Massera's theorems for arbitrary discrete domains, based on a newly introduced definition for both linear and nonlinear equations. For scalar nonlinear equations, we identify sufficient conditions that ensure each µ-bounded solution approaches a periodic solution asymptotically. In the case of linear systems, we prove that the presence of a µ-bounded solution necessarily leads to a periodic solution. We also provide some examples to show the practical implications of our findings.

Purpose: Neuroma formation is a notable complication that can occur following amputation. Newer techniques are proving to be successful in preventing neuroma formation by providing the proximal nerve segment with an end organ to help with organized growth. Redirecting arterial blood flow to the nerve endings may be an effective mechanism of preventing neuroma formation. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that by coapting the proximal end of a transected nerve with a functional artery as a vascular end organ, neuroma formation can be prevented. Methods: Six Sprague-Dawley rats were used for the control and experimental groups. Subjects …

Automated interpretation of ultrasound imaging of the heart (echocardiograms) could improve the detection and treatment of aortic stenosis (AS), a deadly heart disease. However, existing deep learning pipelines for assessing AS from echocardiograms have two key limitations. First, most methods rely on limited 2D cineloops, thereby ignoring widely available Spectral Doppler imaging that contains important complementary information about pressure gradients and blood flow abnormalities associated with AS. Second, obtaining labeled data is difficult. There are often far more unlabeled echocardiogram recordings available, but these remain underutilized by existing methods. To overcome these limitations, we introduce Semi-supervised Multimodal Multiple-Instance Learning (SMMIL), …
