Entropy-Based Performance Analysis Of Jet Engines; Methodology And Application To A Generic Single-Spool Turbojet, Mohammad Abbas
Entropy-Based Performance Analysis Of Jet Engines; Methodology And Application To A Generic Single-Spool Turbojet, Mohammad Abbas
Masters Theses
"Recently developed methodology that provides the direct assessment of traditional thrust-based performance of aerospace vehicles in terms of entropy generation (i.e., exergy destruction) is modified for stand-alone jet engines. This methodology is applied to a specific single-spool turbojet engine configuration. A generic compressor performance map along with modeled engine component performance characterizations are utilized in order to provide comprehensive traditional engine performance results (engine thrust, mass capture, and RPM), for on and off-design engine operation. Details of exergy losses in engine components, across the entire engine, and in the engine wake are provided and the engine performance losses associated with …

Assessment Of Rockfall Rollout Risk Along Varying Slope Geometries Using The Rocfall And Crsp Software, Mariam S. Al E'Bayat
Masters Theses
"Most routes in mountainous areas suffer from rock falling, rolling and bouncing risk. There are many computer programs concerned with simulating the rockfall problem, and whereas they have the same purpose, they however differ in the input data that's needed to simulate the problem, and they also differ in the way of processing and kind of output.
This study used Rocfall® and the Colorado Rockfall Simulation Program (CRSP®) to simulate sixty-three models of varying slope geometry, where only the slope geometry is changed with the same material properties for both the slope and the rocks.
Both programs were fast and …

Determination Of Significant Parameters That Drive Fracture Optimization In The Glauconite Formation, Southern Chile, Ghassan Saleh Mahdi Alqatrani
Masters Theses
"The Glauconite Formation in the Magallanes Basin of Southern Chile is a clay- and silica-rich formation with low permeability. As with many of the unconventional resources, the Glauconite Formation requires a hydraulic fracturing operation to enhance the productivity of the wells in this area.
Data and pertinent information of fracturing, completion, and reservoir quality parameters along with post-fracture production data were collected to initiate a database of nearly 70 wells, to be used to develop a better understanding of the fracturing behavior, optimize the well stimulation, and overcome the major barriers in the hydraulic fracturing of the Glauconite Formation. The …
The Viability Of Advantg Deterministic Method For Synthetic Radiography Generation, Andrew Albert Bingham
The Viability Of Advantg Deterministic Method For Synthetic Radiography Generation, Andrew Albert Bingham
Masters Theses
"Time sensitive and high resolution image simulations are needed for synthetic radiography generation. The standard stochastic approach requires lengthy run times with poor statistics at higher resolutions. The investigation of the viability of a deterministic approach to synthetic radiography image generation was explored. The aim was to analyze a computational time decrease over the stochastic method. ADVANTG was compared to MCNP in multiple scenarios including a Benchtop CT prototype, to simulate high resolution radiography images. By using ADVANTG deterministic code to simulate radiography images the computational time was found to decrease over 10 times compared to the MCNP stochastic approach"--Abstract, …
Deformation Processes At The Leading Edge Of The Sevier Fold And Thrust Belt, Southwest Utah, William Joseph Michael Chandonia
Deformation Processes At The Leading Edge Of The Sevier Fold And Thrust Belt, Southwest Utah, William Joseph Michael Chandonia
Masters Theses
"Deformation processes leading to formation and abandonment of 'triangle zones' along the leading edge of the Sevier fold and thrust belt are investigated near Kanarraville, Utah through construction of a detailed geologic map and cross-section along Spring Creek. Here the eastern limb of the Kanarra fold, a Sevier structure, is well exposed along the Hurricane Cliffs due to uplift and erosion of the footwall of the Hurricane Fault. The east-verging Kanarra fold changes from upright to overturned within Spring Creek. Within the fold limb, parasitic folds, minor thrust faults, and duplex structures result in local tectonic overthickening of units and …
Cyber-Physical Security Of A Chemical Plant, Prakash Rao Dunaka
Cyber-Physical Security Of A Chemical Plant, Prakash Rao Dunaka
Masters Theses
"The increasing number of cyber attacks on industries demands immediate attention for providing more secure mechanisms to safeguard industries and minimize risks. A supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system employing the distributed networks of sensors and actuators that interact with the physical environment is vulnerable to attacks that target the interface between the cyber and physical subsystems. These cyber attacks are typically malicious actions that cause undesired results in the cyber physical world, for example, the Stuxnet attack that targeted Iran's nuclear centrifuges. An attack that hijacks the sensors in an attempt to provide false readings to the controller …

The Use Of Ceramic Water Filters Under Pressure In An In-Line Water Pumping System, Travis Dean Gardner
The Use Of Ceramic Water Filters Under Pressure In An In-Line Water Pumping System, Travis Dean Gardner
Masters Theses
"Ceramic pot filters (CPFs) have proven an effective point of use (POU) filter due to their relative low cost, ease to manufacture, and effectiveness at treating contaminated water. These filters are used by individual homes, and sometimes multiple filters are needed for each home in order to produce enough water for the family's household. If these filters could be used in-line with a pumping system or elevated storage tank, water could be filtered and used on demand for a community in an economically feasible way. However, CPFs are too fragile to use under pressure due to the weak points where …

Spectrum Analyzer Based Phase Measurement For Emi Scanning Applications, Shubhankar Marathe
Masters Theses
"Often Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) scanning applications require phase and magnitude information for the creation of equivalent radiation models and for far-field predictions. Magnitude information can be obtained using a spectrum analyzer (SA), which is relatively inexpensive compared to phase resolving instruments such as oscilloscopes (scope) and vector network analyzers (VNA). The study focusses on the development of a near-field scanning method using a SA to measure the phase of the device under test (DUT) signals.
The first part deals with the development of the method in software simulation tools and testing it under standard test conditions. The second part deals …

Hydraulic Conductivity Testing Of Cement-Bentonite Mixes For Use In Annular Well Seals, Amy Lynn Norval
Hydraulic Conductivity Testing Of Cement-Bentonite Mixes For Use In Annular Well Seals, Amy Lynn Norval
Masters Theses
"Grout is the material used in the annulus of water supply and monitoring wells to prevent movement of water from adjacent formations or from the land surface into the well. Grout is critical for preventing cross-contamination of aquifers through a borehole when a single well penetrates multiple aquifers and for protecting aquifers from surface contamination. The composition and emplacement of grout is regulated in most states, with standard mixes of bentonite and cement being the most widely used types of grout. Despite widespread adoption of grout regulations, surprisingly little literature is available to describe the effectiveness of different grout mixtures. …
Impact Of Framing And Priming On Users' Behavior In Cybersecurity, Kavya Sharma
Impact Of Framing And Priming On Users' Behavior In Cybersecurity, Kavya Sharma
Masters Theses
"This research examines the impact of framing and priming on users' behavior (i.e., action) in a cybersecurity setting. It also examines perceptual outcomes (i.e., confidence, perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, trust, and fear) associated with the users' cybersecurity action. The research draws on prospect theory in the behavioral economics literature and instance-based learning theory in the education literature to generate the hypotheses for the research. A between-subject experimental design (N=129) was used. The results suggest that priming users to cybersecurity risks reduces their risk-taking behavior associated with cybersecurity whereas negative framing of messages associated with cybersecurity has no significant effect on …
Decodable Network Coding In Wireless Network, Junwei Su
Decodable Network Coding In Wireless Network, Junwei Su
Masters Theses
"Network coding is a network layer technique to improve transmission efficiency. Coding packets is especially beneficial in a wireless environment where the demand for radio spectrum is high. However, to fully realize the benefits of network coding two challenging issues that must be addressed are: (1) Guaranteeing separation of coded packets at the destination, and (2) Mitigating the extra coding/decoding delay. If the destination has all the needed packets to decode a coded packet, then separation failure can be averted. If the scheduling algorithm considers the arrival time of coding pairs, then the extra delay can be mitigated. In this …
Vegetation Based Assessment And Monitoring Tools For Landfill Leachate Treatment And Fugitive Plumes, Rahul Sukharia
Vegetation Based Assessment And Monitoring Tools For Landfill Leachate Treatment And Fugitive Plumes, Rahul Sukharia
Masters Theses
"Solid waste and leachate generation from solid waste landfills has a legacy of detrimental and toxic impacts on the environment. Disposal practices are expensive, failure prone and have not been able to keep up with the pace of disposal of toxic compounds. In general, a landfill acts as a "bathtub" with infiltration of water through the landfill cover into the landfill, reacting with the waste and transferring toxic components into the leachate. Irrigating the evapotranspiration (ET) covers with leachate collected from the landfill has been developed and applied. Such methods can keep the leached pollutants in a loop, which reduces …

Characterization Of The Rectification Behaviour Of In-Amps And Estimating The Near Field Coupling From Smps Circuits To A Nearby Antenna Using Dipole Moments, Chunyu Wu
Masters Theses
"This thesis discusses two parts.
In the first part, the rectification behavior of popular instrumentation amplifiers is measured in both common mode and single-ended RF noise injection. It is recommended that AD8221 be used in common mode RF noise injection environment. And AD8220 and AD8429 are recommended in single-ended RF noise injection environment. The mechanism of RF noise rectification inside in-amps is also discussed. It is verified that rectification mainly happens at the non-inverting input of two op-amps in the first stage of an in-amp. The DC voltage difference between inverting input and non-inverting input of the in-amp is further …

A Physics-Based Approach For Power Integrity In Multi-Layered Pcbs, Biyao Zhao
Masters Theses
"Developing a power distribution network (PDN) for ASICs and ICs to achieve the low-voltage ripple specifications for current digital designs is challenging with the high-speed and low-voltage ICs. Present methods are typically guided by best engineering practices for low impedance looking into the PDN from the IC. A pre-layout design methodology for power integrity in multi-layered PCB PDN geometry is proposed in the thesis. The PCB PDN geometry is segmented into four parts and every part is modelled using different methods based on the geometry details of the part. Physics-based circuit models are built for every part and the four …
Multi Stage Recovery From Large Scale Failure In Interdependent Networks, Maria Angelin John Bosco
Multi Stage Recovery From Large Scale Failure In Interdependent Networks, Maria Angelin John Bosco
Masters Theses
"Node and link failures that usually cause limited damage in a single network, may cascade into large scale disasters in the case of interdependent networks, due to the dependencies that exist between them. Recovery from such failures may require multiple stages or steps for complete restoration of connection or flow between them. When critical services are disrupted, the order in which the broken elements are repaired affects the earliest possible recovery time of vital services. In a flow network, one order of restoration may restore more flow at an earlier stage than another. The paper aims to model an efficient …

Shortest-Distance And Minimum-Cost Self-Charging Path Problems: Formulations And Application, Marc Monroe Teeter
Shortest-Distance And Minimum-Cost Self-Charging Path Problems: Formulations And Application, Marc Monroe Teeter
Masters Theses
"In this study, self-charging paths for an electric bus are analyzed. Wireless-power-transfer technologies, when integrated on a road network, enable dynamic charging of electric vehicles. Roads implemented with a wireless-power-transfer technology are referred to as electric-roads in this study. Electric vehicles traversing on electric-roads, therefore, can be dynamically charged. This can further eliminate the need for static charging, i.e., the electric vehicle will not need to stop for charging.
This thesis analyzes the design of transit routes for an electric-bus so that the electric-bus is charged by only electric-roads. Specifically, the focus is on designing a path, which passes through …
Development Of A Variogram Approach To Spatial Outlier Detection Using A Supplemental Digital Elevation Model Dataset, Zane Daniel Helwig
Development Of A Variogram Approach To Spatial Outlier Detection Using A Supplemental Digital Elevation Model Dataset, Zane Daniel Helwig
Masters Theses
"When developing a ground water model, the quality of the dataset should first be evaluated. Spatial outliers can lead to predictions which are not representative of actual conditions. In order to isolate misrepresentative points, a method is presented which examines the experimental variogram of a ground water elevation dataset. To define a threshold variance between pairs of ground water elevation measures, ground elevation values from a digital elevation model (DEM) are used to determine a maximum reasonable variance expected to occur on the experimental variogram. To determine appropriate DEM parameters, a separate study was also done which observed characteristic behavior …

Mining Asteroids For Volatile Resources: An Experimental Demonstration Of Extraction And Recovery, Egboche Christopher Unobe
Mining Asteroids For Volatile Resources: An Experimental Demonstration Of Extraction And Recovery, Egboche Christopher Unobe
Masters Theses
"Gaseous compounds trapped within carbonaceous asteroids may prove to be important targets for prospective space miners in the near-term. Volatile release is from hydrated, hydroxylated and carbonated phases present, making such bodies attractive as feedstock for the production of H2O, CO2 and simple organic compounds. A source of these species in orbit provides an opportunity to locally produce space-craft propellant and other life-support gases through the application of In-situ Resource Utilization (ISRU).
For this study, an experimental vacuum system was modified and used to test the technical validity of radiatively heating asteroid simulants to extract contained gaseous …
