Targeting Orphan G Protein-Coupled Receptors For The Treatment Of Diabetes And Its Complications: C-Peptide And Gpr146, G. R. Kolar, S. M. Grote, G. L.C. Yosten

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are the most abundant receptor family encoded by the human genome and are the targets of a high percentage of drugs currently in use or in clinical trials for the treatment of diseases such as diabetes and its associated complications. Thus, orphan GPCRs, for which the ligand is unknown, represent an important untapped source of therapeutic potential for the treatment of many diseases. We have identified the previously orphan GPCR, GPR146, as the putative receptor of proinsulin C-peptide, which may prove to be an effective treatment for diabetes-associated complications. For example, we have found a potential …

Privacy Setting Recommendation For Image Sharing, Jun Yu, Zhenzhong Kuang, Zhou Yu, Dan Lin, Jianping Fan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper aims to simultaneously consider two inseparable issues for privacy setting recommendation: (1) sensitiveness of visual content of the images being shared; and (2) trustworthiness of users being granted. First, an object-based approach is developed for image content sensitiveness (privacy) representation. Secondly, the users on a social network are clustered into a set of representative social groups to generate a discriminative dictionary for user trustworthiness characterization. Finally, a tree classifier is trained hierarchically to recommend appropriate privacy settings for image sharing.

2-D And 3-D Mapping Of Soil And Rock Structure In Karst Terrain Of Southwestern Missouri Using The Non-Invasive Electrical Resistivity Tomography Method (Ert), Diya Ali Ahmad Alfuqara

Masters Theses

"Electrical resistivity tomography data were acquired in an extensively karstic area of southwestern Missouri. The interpretation of the electrical resistivity tomography data was constrained by multichannel analysis of surface wave data and limited boring control. The objective of the study was to determine if variations in the moisture content of the soil and shallow rock are related to ground surface topography. Analysis of the acquired electrical resistivity tomography data showed that resistivity values of soil and shallow rock beneath and in proximity to identified natural and man-made surface run-off pathways are typically low compared to the resistivity values of soil …

Media Optimization, Scale-Up And Repeated Fed-Batch Operations For The Production Of 1,3-Propanediol From Glycerol By Halanaerobium Hydrogeniformans, Shivani Kalia

Masters Theses

"The development of renewable energy sources, such as biofuels, is of great interest in today's world due to depletion of fossil fuels and concerns about climate change. The production of the main by-product, crude glycerol, in biodiesel production presents an opportunity for the production of industrially relevant commodities. Crude glycerol in biodiesel waste is highly impure and possesses high salt concentrations and alkalinity, making it infeasible for direct industrial utilization. Moreover, current glycerol purification methods are highly cost-intensive, necessitating a search for cost-effective approaches that are feasible to employ. Genome data analysis of Halanaerobium hydrogeniformans, revealed the metabolic capability …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The recovery from fractured reservoirs is usually low. The areal heterogeneity is one result of the fractured reservoir. Low salinity waterflooding (LSWF) and preformed particle gel (PPG) have recently investigated by some researchers. The main objective of this study was to determine whether the combining technologies can improve conformance control in fractured sandstone reservoirs. Semi-transparent five-spot models made of sandstone cores and acrylic plates were built. The effect of low salinity waterflooding on oil recovery was studied. Models were designed with three parallel open fractures. Sodium chloride (1.0, 0.1, 0.01, and 0.001 wt. % NaCl) were used for brine flooding …

Chain Transitive Homeomorphisms On A Space: All Or None, Ethan Akin, Juho Rautio Jan 2017

Chain Transitive Homeomorphisms On A Space: All Or None, Ethan Akin, Juho Rautio

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Extending earlier work, we consider when a compact metric space can be realized as the omega limit set of a discrete time dynamical system. This is equivalent to asking when the space admits a chain transitive homeomorphism. We approach this problem in terms of various conditions on the connected components of the space. We also construct spaces where all homeomorphisms are chain transitive.

A Pore Water Pressure Diffusion Model To Predict Formwork Pressure Exerted By Freshly Mixed Concrete, Chan Kyu Park, Jae Hong Kim, Seong Ho Han

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The formwork pressure exerted by freshly mixed concrete is one of the most important considerations in ensuring the safety of construction in the field. The formwork pressure also affects the quality of concrete structures, determining the final shape of concrete members. Previous studies on the form pressure mostly investigated the intrinsic material effect. For example, the use of self-consolidating concrete increases the maximum pressure on the formwork. The extrinsic factor of a formwork system itself has rarely been considered. In the mockup tests and theoretical evaluations, it is identified that the bleed water-out controlled by the formwork tightness is critical. …

Electron Impact Excitation-Ionization Of Molecules, Esam Abobakr A. Ali Jan 2017

Electron Impact Excitation-Ionization Of Molecules, Esam Abobakr A. Ali

Doctoral Dissertations

"In the last few decades, the study of atomic collisions by electron-impact has made significant advances. The most difficult case to study is electron impact ionization of molecules for which many approximations have to be made and the validity of these approximations can only be checked by comparing with experiment.

In this thesis, I have examined the Molecular three-body distorted wave (M3DW) or Molecular four-body distorted wave (M4DW) approximations for electron-impact ionization. These models use a fully quantum mechanical approach where all particles are treated quantum mechanically and the post collision interaction (PCI) is treated to all orders of perturbation. …

A Harmonic M-Factorial Function And Applications, Reginald Alfred Brigham Ii Jan 2017

A Harmonic M-Factorial Function And Applications, Reginald Alfred Brigham Ii

Doctoral Dissertations

"We offer analogs to the falling factorial and rising factorial functions for the set of harmonic numbers, as well as a mixed factorial function called the M-factorial. From these concepts, we develop a harmonic analog of the binomial coefficient and an alternate expression of the harmonic exponential function and establish several identities. We generalize from the harmonic numbers to a general time scale and demonstrate how solutions to some second order eigenvalue problems and partial dynamic equations can be constructed using power series built from the M-factorial function"--Abstract, page iii.

Application Of Quantum Monte Carlo Methods To Molecular Potential Energy Surfaces, Andrew Douglas Powell Jan 2017

Application Of Quantum Monte Carlo Methods To Molecular Potential Energy Surfaces, Andrew Douglas Powell

Doctoral Dissertations

"Various computational methods have been used to generate potential energy surfaces, which can help us simulate and interpret how atoms or molecules behave during a chemical reaction. For accurate work, ab initio wavefunction methods have traditionally been used, which have some disadvantages. For example, highly accurate methods scale poorly with system size (n7 or higher) and are mostly not well parallelized for calculations with multiple processors. One alternative method that has more favorable scaling with system size and is well parallelized is a computational technique called quantum Monte Carlo (QMC). QMC methods scale with the number of electrons as …

Randomized Encoding Of Combinational And Sequential Logic For Resistance To Hardware Trojans, Travis Edward Schulze Jan 2017

Randomized Encoding Of Combinational And Sequential Logic For Resistance To Hardware Trojans, Travis Edward Schulze

Doctoral Dissertations

"Globalization of micro-chip fabrication has opened a new avenue of cyber-crime. It is now possible to insert hardware Trojans directly into a chip during the manufacturing process. These hardware Trojans are capable of destroying a chip, reducing performance or even capturing sensitive data. To date, defensive methods have focused on detection of the Trojan circuitry or prevention through design for security methods.

This dissertation presents a shift away from prevention and detection to a design methodology wherein one no longer cares if a Trojan is present or not. The Randomized Encoding of Combinational Logic for Resistance to Data Leakage or …

Smart Rocks For Bridge Scour Monitoring -- Design And Localization Using Electromagnetic Techniques And Embedded Orientation Sensors, Andro Radchenko Jan 2017

Smart Rocks For Bridge Scour Monitoring -- Design And Localization Using Electromagnetic Techniques And Embedded Orientation Sensors, Andro Radchenko

Doctoral Dissertations

"River bridge scour is an erosion process in which flowing water removes sediment materials (such as sand, rocks) from a bridge foundation, river beds and banks. As a result, the level of the river bed near a bridge pier is lowering such that the bridge foundation stability can be compromised, and the bridge can collapse. The scour is a dynamic process, which can accelerate rapidly during a flood event. Thus, regular monitoring of the scour progress is necessary to be performed at most river bridges. Present techniques are usually expensive, require large man/hour efforts, and often lack the real-time monitoring …
