Assessment On Food And Water Collection On Mars Vs. Human Survival, Michael Todd Herman Jr. Aug 2017

Assessment On Food And Water Collection On Mars Vs. Human Survival, Michael Todd Herman Jr.

Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer

This research focuses on the possibility of farming and water collection on Mars to determine if enough food and water can be gathered to support sustained human life. The inspiration for this comes from the plans to put a human on Mars and create a sustained colony, such as Mars One. This colony can become the basis for a multi-planetary civilization that will substantially reduce future overcrowding problems (the population in 2050 is projected to be 11 billion and is expected to continue to grow exponentially) and promote additional research on space travel that can aid in the reduction of …

Defining Consciousness, Adam Bateman Aug 2017

Defining Consciousness, Adam Bateman

Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer

A researcher trying to develop a conscious artificial intelligence or examine consciousness in plants would be completely unable to do so without first obtaining a clear, concise, and global definition. This idea is what originally inspired my research. The main method of research to be used will be to thoroughly examine scholarly articles pertaining to consciousness and different theories of the mind. After gathering data and different ideas, I will create a definition that is plausible, and is optimized in terms of being useful to researchers. Currently, the issue is that there are an incredible amount of mental features that …

Exploring Potential Flaws And Dangers Involving Machine Learning Technology, David Nicholas Skoff

Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer

This paper seeks to explore the ways in which machine learning and AI may influence the world in the future and the potential for the technology to be misused or exploited. In 1959 Arthur Samuel defined machine learning as “the field of study that gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed” (Munoz). This paper will also seek to find out if there is merit to the current worry that robots will take over some jobs based in cognitive abilities. In the past, a human was required to perform these jobs, but with the rise of more complex …

Network Security: Internet Protocol Version Six Security, Hannah Reinbolt

Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer

It is no secret that the pool of public internet addresses available with Internet Protocol version Four (IPv4) is gone. (Morphy, 2011) Thus the migration to the more roomy Internet Protocol version Six (IPv6) has begun. This migration is a complex process including different security procedures and updates that require time and knowledge. This paper will dive into scientific writings, with databases like Scopus and IEEE, about various security risks in the IPv6 protocol such as tunneling practices, router issues and issues with Internet Protocol Security (IPsec). This paper will overview security practices to better clarify common vulnerabilities in IPv6. …

An Analysis Of The Environmental Impact Of Electric Vehicles, Ashley Schmid Aug 2017

An Analysis Of The Environmental Impact Of Electric Vehicles, Ashley Schmid

Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer

Electric cars have the reputation as a possible solution to many modern environmental and economic issues. Electric motors have been an interest of many inventors since the 1830s, but fully electric vehicles were not prevalent until 2008 when Tesla Motors released the Roadster. The looming energy crisis is one of the main motivations for the advancement in renewable and alternative fuel technologies, but since the early 60s, it has been the environmental lobby that has been pushing for this change. The environment suffers from industrialized nations as the amount of greenhouse gas emissions reach new heights every year. Filtration systems …

Clinical Uses For Psychedelic Drugs, Matthew Clarkson Aug 2017

Clinical Uses For Psychedelic Drugs, Matthew Clarkson

Missouri S&T’s Peer to Peer

Throughout the last forty years, psychedelic drugs have been illegal in the United States. Stigmatized due to the potential for abuse, the use of these drugs has been relegated to simple criminal activity and research stagnated for those 40 years. Slowly, research has begun to pick up as the restrictions begin to lift incrementally. However, the current restrictions are intense, further limiting the amount of research conducted that can reveal the medical benefits of these drugs. Through multiple studies, both open-label and double-blinded to show both feasibility and efficacy, as well as the biological impact of the drugs, significant anxiolytic, …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have measured fully differential cross sections for electron capture in 75 keV p+H2 collisions with subsequent dissociation of the intermediate molecular H2+ ion by vibrational excitation using different projectile coherence lengths. Data were obtained for two molecular orientations as a function of projectile scattering angle. Two types of interference, single- and molecular two-center interference, were identified. The two-center interference structure is phase shifted by π compared to what we expected. Furthermore, the presence of projectile coherence effects could be reconfirmed.

Removal Of Retained Electrospinning Solvent Prolongs Drug Release From Electrospun Plla Fibers, Anthony R. D'Amato, Nicholas J. Schaub, Jesus M. Cardenas, Andrew S. Fiumara, Paul M. Troiano, Andrea Fischetti, Ryan J. Gilbert

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A major challenge in developing drug-releasing electro spun nanofibers is obtaining long-term drug release over many weeks with no burst release of drug. Here, we present new methods capable of prolonging the diffusive release of small molecule drugs from electro spun poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) nanofibers. The methods focus on removal of retained electrospinning solvent through fiber heating, maintaining fibers in a laboratory setting, or a combination of these methods. These post-fabrication methods altered the release characteristics of a model small molecule drug, 6-aminonicotinamide (6AN), from PLLA fibers. Specifically, untreated fibers released 6AN over 9 days, and fibers that underwent a …

Quantum Oscillations In The Anomalous Spin Density Wave State Of Feas, Daniel J. Campbell, Chris Eckberg, Kefeng Wang, Limin Wang, Halyna Hodovanets, Dave Graf, David Parker, Johnpierre Paglione

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Quantum oscillations in the binary antiferromagnetic metal FeAs are presented and compared to theoretical predictions for the electronic band structure in the anomalous spin density wave state of this material. Demonstrating a method for growing single crystals out of Bi flux, we utilize the highest quality FeAs to perform torque magnetometry experiments up to 35 T, using rotations of field angle in two planes to provide evidence for one electron and one hole band in the magnetically ordered state. The resulting picture agrees with previous experimental evidence for multiple carriers at low temperatures, but the exact Fermi surface shape differs …

Fabricating Zirconia Components With Organic Support Material By The Ceramic On-Demand Extrusion Process, Wenbin Li, Amir Ghazanfari, Devin Mcmillen, Andrew Scherff, Ming-Chuan Leu, Greg Hilmas

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ceramic On-Demand Extrusion (CODE) is an extrusion-based additive manufacturing process recently developed for fabricating dense, functional ceramic components. This paper presents a further development of this process and focuses on fabricating 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (3YSZ) components that cannot be fabricated without using support structures. The 3YSZ paste is deposited through the main nozzle, and a polycaprolactone (PCL) pellet feedstock is melted and deposited through an auxiliary nozzle to build support structures. After a green part is printed and dried, the support structures are removed by heating the part to ~70°C to melt the PCL. The part is then sintered …

Design And Fabrication Of Functionally Graded Material From Ti To Γ-Tial By Laser Metal Deposition, Xueyang Chen, Lei Yan, Joseph William Newkirk, Frank W. Liou

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Functionally graded material (FGM) is one kind of advanced material characterized by a gradual change in properties as the position varies. The spatial variation of compositional and microstructure over volume is aimed to control corresponding functional properties. In this research, when 100% γ-TiAl was directly deposited on pure Ti substrate, cracks were formed within the γ-TiAl layer. Then a six-layer crack-free functionally graded material of Ti/TiAl was designed and fabricated by laser metal deposition (LMD) method, with composition changing from pure Ti on one side to 100% γ-TiAl on the other side. The fabricated FGM was characterized for material properties …

Mechanical Properties Of 304l Parts Made By Laser-Foil-Printing Technology, Chia-Hung Hung, Yiyu Shen, Ming-Chuan Leu, Hai-Lung Tsai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Laser-Foil-Printing (LFP) is a novel laminated object manufacturing process for metal additive manufacturing. It fabricates three-dimensional metal parts by using a dual-laser system to weld and cut metal foils layer by layer. A main advantage of LFP is the higher cooling rate compared to powder-based laser additive manufacturing processes due to the thermal conductivity difference between foil and powder. This study focuses on the mechanical properties of 304L stainless steel parts built by the LFP process. The experimental results indicate that the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of LFP fabricated 304L SS parts are higher by 9% and 8% …
