This paper presents a non-linear finite element analysis of large-scale hollow-core fiber-reinforced polymer-concrete-thin walled steel (HC-FCS) precast columns under reversed cyclic loading. The HC-FCS columns provide an economical and efficient alternative to conventional concrete bridge columns. The precast HC-FCS column consists of a concrete shell sandwiched between an outer fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tube and an inner thin-walled steel tube. The steel tube diameter-to thickness (Di/ts) ratio was 254. The proposed FEA model was developed using LS_DYNA multipurpose software and was verified by experimental results performed in this study. The FE model was used to investigate some …

Kinetic Solvent Viscosity Effects As Probes For Studying The Mechanisms Of Enzyme Action, Giovanni Gadda, Pablo Sobrado Jun 2018

Kinetic Solvent Viscosity Effects As Probes For Studying The Mechanisms Of Enzyme Action, Giovanni Gadda, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The study of enzyme reaction mechanisms is fundamentally important to our understanding of biochemistry, cellular metabolism, and drug development. This Perspective focuses on the use of kinetic solvent viscosity effects (KSVEs) to study enzyme reactions. This technique is easily implemented and uses steady-state kinetic analyses to probe whether substrate binding is diffusion-controlled and whether product release is the rate-limiting step in the catalytic cycle. In addition, KSVEs can identify isomerization steps that are important for catalysis. The use of KSVEs in combination with other techniques, such as kinetic isotope effects, pH effects, and site-directed mutagenesis, can provide a detailed view …

A Novel Hybrid 2d/Q-2d Finite Element Method For Power/Ground Plane Analysis, Ping Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Hakan Bagci

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

By realizing the TMz modal distribution property between the power/ground plate-pairs, the magnetic field actually has only azimuthal components while longitude component is zero. Thus, if the magnetic field wave equation is solved, only a Quasi-2D issue is considered. Furthermore, since the high-order modes are only located in the near region of the anti-pad, thus for the domain far-away from the antipad has only the TEM mode. Thereby, in this region, the magnetic field is invariable along the vertical direction, which consequently is a pure 2D domain. As a result, the conventional 3D computational domain is naturally transformed to a …

Improving Performance Of Iterative Methods By Lossy Checkponting, Dingwen Tao, Sheng Di, Xin Liang, Zizhong Chen, Franck Cappello

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Iterative methods are commonly used approaches to solve large, sparse linear systems, which are fundamental operations for many modern scientific simulations. When the large-scale iterative methods are running with a large number of ranks in parallel, they have to checkpoint the dynamic variables periodically in case of unavoidable fail-stop errors, requiring fast I/O systems and large storage space. To this end, significantly reducing the checkpointing overhead is critical to improving the overall performance of iterative methods. Our contribution is fourfold. (1) We propose a novel lossy checkpointing scheme that can significantly improve the checkpointing performance of iterative methods by leveraging …

The effects of Co substitution on Ba(Ni1-xCox)2As2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.251) single crystals grown out of Pb flux are investigated via transport, magnetic, and thermodynamic measurements. BaNi2As2 exhibits a first-order tetragonal to triclinic structural phase transition at Ts = 137 K upon cooling, and enters a superconducting phase below Tc = 0.7 K. The structural phase transition is sensitive to cobalt content and is suppressed completely by x ≥ 0.133. The superconducting critical temperature, Tc, increases continuously with x, reaching a maximum of Tc …

The ability to predict mass flow behavior during hot rolling is essential to product quality. In this study, viscoplastic models of the steels from SSAB and U.S. Steel were developed based on experimental stress-strain curves. A three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model was built to simulate a reverse plate hot rolling and a hot strip rolling process. For plate rolling, a seven pass schedule was simulated. The plastic strain distributions during rolling were investigated. The results show that the surface of the plate has larger plastic strain than the center. In the case of hot strip rolling, the simulation predicts that …

Identity-Adaptive Facial Expression Recognition Through Expression Regeneration Using Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks, Huiyuan Yang, Zheng Zhang, Lijun Yin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Subject variation is a challenging issue for facial expression recognition, especially when handling unseen subjects with small-scale labeled facial expression databases. Although transfer learning has been widely used to tackle the problem, the performance degrades on new data. In this paper, we present a novel approach (so-called IA-gen) to alleviate the issue of subject variations by regenerating expressions from any input facial images. First of all, we train conditional generative models to generate six prototypic facial expressions from any given query face image while keeping the identity related information unchanged. Generative Adversarial Networks are employed to train the conditional generative …

Influence Of Silica Nanoparticle Density And Flow Conditions On Sedimentation, Cell Uptake, And Cytotoxicity, Mostafa Yazdimamaghani, Zachary B. Barber, Seyyed Pouya Hadipour Moghaddam, Hamidreza Ghandehari

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Careful evaluation of the toxicological response of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) as a function of physicochemical properties can aid in the design of safe platforms for biomedical applications including drug delivery. Typically, in vitro ENM cytotoxicity assessments are performed under conventional static cell culture conditions. However, such conditions do not take into account the sedimentation rate of ENMs. Herein, we synthesized four types of similar size silica nanoparticles (SNPs) with modified surface roughness, charge, and density and characterized their cytotoxicity under static and dynamic conditions. Influence of particle density on sedimentation and diffusion velocities were studied by comparing solid dense silica …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Sperm activation is a fascinating example of cell differentiation, in which immotile spermatids undergo a rapid and dramatic transition to become mature, motile sperm. Because the sperm nucleus is transcriptionally silent, this transition does not involve transcriptional changes. Although Caenorhabditis elegans is a leading model for studies of sperm activation, the mechanisms by which signaling pathways induce this transformation remain poorly characterized. Here we show that a conserved transmembrane zinc transporter, ZIPT-7.1, regulates the induction of sperm activation in Caenorhabditis nematodes. The zipt-7.1 mutant hermaphrodites cannot self-fertilize, and males reproduce poorly, because mutant spermatids are defective in responding to activating …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

As described in reports by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), engineers and the profession of engineering lack visibility, relevance, and influence with the public. One approach to address this situation is the, "Changing the Conversation," campaign that uses market research techniques to improve the public image of the engineering profession. In related efforts, scientists have developed the, "March for Science," campaign to advocate for the role of science in evidence-based public policy at the local, state, and international levels. In contrast to marketing materials and advocacy campaigns, this article argues that the approach adopted by nurses and the profession …

Multi-Auv Cooperative Target Hunting Based On Improved Potential Field In A Surface-Water Environment, Hengqing Ge, Guibin Chen, Guang Xu

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, target hunting aims to detect target and surround the detected target in a surface-water using Multiple Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (multi-AUV) in a given area. The main challenge in multi-AUV target hunting is the design of AUV's motion path and coordination mechanism. To conduct the cooperative target hunting by multi-AUV in a surface-water environment, an integrated algorithm based on improved potential field (IPF) is proposed. First, a potential field function is established according to the information of the surface-water environment. Then, the dispersion degree, the homodromous degree, and district-difference degree are introduced to increase the cooperation of the …

Russian Zoophonic Verbs Modifications' Domain. Peculiarity Of Synthesis, Irina V. Ivliyeva

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

The article examines capabilities of Russian zoophonic verbs (those describing sounds produced by animals) to create semantic modifications. Using the appending inventory of zoophonic verbal modifications from novel sources, previously unused in lexicographic practices, the open (infinite) nature of semantic modifications' domain, its composition and the fluidity of its lacuna zones are shown. The structure of zoophonic verbal modifications is examined; verbal modifiers, non-typical for this lexical-semantic group of verbs, are inventoried. The obstacles to successful production of semantically modified derivatives during different stages of synthesis are classified by several criteria: denotative, semantic, and distributive. The research findings demonstrate the …
