Assessment Of Turbulence Models In A Hypersonic Cold-Wall Turbulent Boundary Layer, Junji Huang, Jorge-Valentino Bretzke, Lian Duan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, the ability of standard one- or two-equation turbulence models to predict mean and turbulence profiles, the Reynolds stress, and the turbulent heat flux in hypersonic cold-wall boundary-layer applications is investigated. The turbulence models under investigation include the one-equation model of Spalart-Allmaras, the baseline k-ω model by Menter, as well as the shear-stress transport k-ω model by Menter. Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations with the different turbulence models are conducted for a flat-plate, zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer with a nominal free-stream Mach number of 8 and wall-to-recovery temperature ratio of 0.48, and the RANS results are compared with those …

On The Feasibility Of Tailoring Copper-Nickel Functionally Graded Materials Fabricated Through Laser Metal Deposition, Sreekar Karnati, Yunlu Zhang, Frank W. Liou, Joseph William Newkirk

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, pulse‐width modulation of laser power was identified as a feasible means for varying the chemical gradient in copper—nickel‐graded materials. Graded material deposits of 70 wt. %. copper‐30 wt. %. nickel on 100 wt. %. nickel and vice versa were deposited and characterized. The 70/30 copper—nickel weight ratio in the feedstock powder was achieved through blending elemental copper and 96 wt. %. Ni—Delero‐22 alloy. At the dissimilar material interface over the course of four layers, the duty cycle of power was ramped down from a high value to optimized deposition conditions. This change was theorized to influence the …

Integer Quantum Hall Transition On A Tight-Binding Lattice, Martin Puschmann, Philipp Cain, Michael Schreiber, Thomas Vojta Mar 2019

Integer Quantum Hall Transition On A Tight-Binding Lattice, Martin Puschmann, Philipp Cain, Michael Schreiber, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Even though the integer quantum Hall transition has been investigated for nearly four decades its critical behavior remains a puzzle. The best theoretical and experimental results for the localization length exponent ν differ significantly from each other, casting doubt on our fundamental understanding. While this discrepancy is often attributed to long-range Coulomb interactions, Gruzberg et al. [Phys. Rev. B 95, 125414 (2017)10.1103/PhysRevB.95.125414] recently suggested that the semiclassical Chalker-Coddington model, widely employed in numerical simulations, is incomplete, questioning the established central theoretical results. To shed light on the controversy, we perform a high-accuracy study of the integer quantum Hall transition for …

A Compact Dual-Frequency Base-Station Dipole Array With Amc Reflector, Min Li, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A compact dual-frequency dipole array is presented for use in base stations operating in the Digital Cellular System (DCS) and Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) bands. The size-miniaturization is realized by utilizing band notch dipole (BND) as array element and artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) as array reflector for reductions in array width and profile height, respectively. Simulation results show that good impedance matching, high antenna isolation, and good radiation performances are achieved simultaneously.

A Compact Wideband Slot-Loop Directional Antenna For Marine Communication Applications, Lidong Chi, Yihong Qi, Zibin Weng, Wei Yu, Weihua Zhuang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A compact wideband high gain directional antenna is proposed in this paper for marine communications. The antenna consists of a back plane (reflector), a slot-loop antenna (driven element), and a director of rod. Based on the current distribution, the slot-loop antenna is equivalent to an array of three linear current dipoles. The dipole acts as an element of the director, which provides a highly efficient director for slot-loop antenna according to theoretical analysis. Both the impedance bandwidth and the 1 dB gain bandwidth are 45% covering 1.7-2.7 GHz in this design. A gain of 11.2 to 12.2 dBi is obtained …

Improving The Drive Current Of Algan/Gan Hemt Using External Strain Engineering, Wei Chih Cheng, Siqi Lei, Wenmao Li, Feng Zhao, Mansun Chan, Hongyu Yu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The concentration of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the AlGaN/GaN heterojunction is dominated by the stress developed in AlGaN layer. In this work, the output performance of AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) was improved by depositing a stressed SiNx as a passivation layer, and the external strain applied onto AlGaN was measured using Raman spectroscopy. As a result, an improvement in on-state resistance and drive current of the device was attained due to the extra 2DEG concentration induced by the external strain. Also, to determine the strain-induced threshold-voltage shift, the stress distribution over the gate region was analyzed.

Thermomagnetic Properties And Magnetocaloric Effect Of Feconicral-Type High-Entropy Alloys, Suok Min Na, Paul K. Lambert, Hyunsoo Kim, Johnpierre Paglione, Nicholas J. Jones Mar 2019

Thermomagnetic Properties And Magnetocaloric Effect Of Feconicral-Type High-Entropy Alloys, Suok Min Na, Paul K. Lambert, Hyunsoo Kim, Johnpierre Paglione, Nicholas J. Jones

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, we investigate the effects of substituting Ni/Al for Cr on the thermomagnetic and magnetocaloric properties of FeCoNiCrAl-type high entropy alloys (HEAs). Ni and Al appear to prefer the BCC phase, and increases in the Al composition appear to stabilize the BCC phase. In contrast to Al, Ni content yields an increase in the FCC phase fraction, resulting in a drop off in magnetization. The phase transformation from BCC to FCC was intensified at annealing temperatures of 800 °C and higher due to increased diffusion rates and the resulting spinodal decomposition. A magnetic phase transition around 150 K …

Quasi-Continuous Metasurfaces For Orbital Angular Momentum Generation, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha Mar 2019

Quasi-Continuous Metasurfaces For Orbital Angular Momentum Generation, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A quasi-continuous composite perfect electric conductor-perfect magnetic conductor metasurface and a systematic metasurface design process are proposed for the orbital angular momentum (OAM) generation. The metasurfaces reflect the incident left circularly polarized (LCP)/right circularly polarized (RCP) plane wave to RCP/LCP vortex beams carrying OAM at normal or oblique direction. Unlike conventional metasurfaces that are composed of discrete scatterers, the scatterers on the proposed metasurface form a quasi-continuous pattern. The patterning of the metasurface is calculated through grating vectors, and no optimization of single scatterer is required. Furthermore, the distortions from local-response discontinuity of discrete scatterers are avoided. This letter provides …

Generation Of Orbital Angular Momentum In 3d Photonic Crystals, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha Mar 2019

Generation Of Orbital Angular Momentum In 3d Photonic Crystals, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An approach to producing electromagnetic (EM) waves carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) by using three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals (PCs) is proposed. By introducing a point defect in the PCs, a localized rotation mode is excited and then radiated out through a circular opening upon the defect. The radiated wave carries well-defined OAM. The lowest four OAM modes, i.e., OAM indices of ±1 and ±2, are successfully generated. The effectiveness of our approach is validated by both full-wave simulations and experiments.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Substrate Release From Trypanosoma Cruzi Udp-Galactopyranose Mutase, Rodrigo Cossio-Pérez, Gustavo Pierdominici-Sottile, Pablo Sobrado, Juliana Palma

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The enzyme UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM) represents a promising drug target for the treatment of infections with Trypanosoma cruzi. We have computed the Potential of Mean Force for the release of UDP-galactopyranose from UGM, using Umbrella Sampling simulations. The simulations revealed the conformational changes that both substrate and enzyme undergo during the process. It was determined that the galactopyranose portion of the substrate is highly mobile and that the opening/closing of the active site occurs in stages. Previously uncharacterized interactions with highly conserved residues were also identified. These findings provide new pieces of information that contribute to the rational design of …

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) Play Vital Roles in Many Biological Processes and Are Naturally Present as Complex Mixtures of Polysaccharides with Tremendous Structural Heterogeneity, Including Many Structural Isomers. Mass Spectrometric Analysis of GAG Isomers, in Particular Highly Sulfated Heparin (Hep) and Heparan Sulfate (HS), is Challenging Because of their Structural Similarity and Facile Sulfo Losses during Analysis. Herein, We Show that Highly Sulfated Hep/HS Isomers May Be Resolved by Gated-Trapped Ion Mobility Spectrometry (Gated-TIMS) with Negligible Sulfo Losses. Subsequent Negative Electron Transfer Dissociation (NETD) Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS/MS) Analysis of TIMS-Separated Hep/HS Isomers Generated Extensive Glycosidic and Cross-Ring Fragments for Confident Isomer …

The Effect Of Calcination Rate On The Structure Of Mesoporous Bioactive Glasses, Saidur Rahman, Andrew Mendonca, Adel Alhalawani, Deanna Polintan, Owen M. Clarkin, Mark R. Towler

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs) are designed to have high specific surface area. They are formulated by a sol–gel process to formulate the glass followed by calcination. This study evaluates how calcination heating rate influences the porous architecture, and thereby the specific surface area, of MBGs. MBGs of molar ratio 80:15:5 for SiO2 :CaO:P2 O 5 were calcined using both low (1 °C/min) and high (20 °C/min) heating rates, termed as L-MBG and H-MBG, respectively. The results obtained from small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXRD) confirm that the MBGs possess 2D hexagonal (P6mm) spacing groups and wide-angle XRD confirms the amorphicity …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Measuring parameters related to each damage mode of composites subjected to impact is very challenging because of the complex damage phenomenology. Here, we developed an experimental methodology for evaluating the micro-scale fracture characteristics of two principal damage modes, i.e., transverse crack and delamination, and providing the corresponding fracture toughness. We demonstrated the capability of the method by comparing and providing additional insights about two materials, namely homopolymer-based (ductile) and copolymer-based (less-ductile) glass/polypropylene thermoplastic composites. We found that (i) transverse crack behavior of both composites is similar as indicated by a small difference in their fracture toughness, (ii) delamination growth in …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Matrix behavior is expected to widely influence the impact response of composites, but detailed conclusions in the case of thermoplastic laminates are still needed. In this paper, we investigated the effect of using either ductile homopolymer PP or less-ductile impact copolymer PP matrices on the low-velocity impact responses of continuous glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP) laminate. These PP types represent two variants in the same family of thermoplastic matrix. A thorough experimental campaign was first performed to provide the tensile properties (for PP and glass/PP) and fracture toughness (Mode-I and Mode-II, glass/PP only) of the employed materials. Then, low-velocity impact tests …

Mechanism Of Tricalcium Silicate Hydration In The Presence Of Polycarboxylate Polymers, Rachel Cook, Hongyan Ma, Aditya Kumar Feb 2019

Mechanism Of Tricalcium Silicate Hydration In The Presence Of Polycarboxylate Polymers, Rachel Cook, Hongyan Ma, Aditya Kumar

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Abstract: The early-age hydration of cement is inhibited in the presence of comb-shaped polycarboxylate ether (PCE) polymer -- a dispersant commonly added to control rheological properties of fresh cement paste. This study employs a series of microcalorimetry experiments and phase boundary nucleation and growth simulations to elucidate the effects of dosage and molecular architecture of PCE on hydration of tricalcium silicate (Ca3SiO5 or C3S in cement notation), the dominant phase in cement. Results show that PCE -- regardless of its molecular architecture -- suppresses early-age hydration of C3S. PCE-induced retardation becomes increasingly more …

Human activities such as trade and transport have increased considerably in the last decades, greatly facilitating the introduction and spread of non-native species at a global level. In the Iberian Peninsula, Fundulus heteroclitus, a small euryhaline coastal fish with short dispersal, was found for the first time in the mid-1970s. Since then, F. heteroclitus has undergone range expansions, colonizing the southern region of Portugal, southwestern coast of Spain and the Ebro Delta in the Mediterranean Sea. Cytochrome b sequences were used to elucidate the species invasion pathway in Iberia. Three Iberian locations (Faro, Cádiz and Ebro Delta) and 13 …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Road deterioration inspires researchers to enhance the properties of asphalt binder for better performing mixes. Recycled tire rubber, or crumb rubber modifier (CRM), and used motor oil (UMO) are two modifiers that enhance asphalt binder performance through two different mechanisms. CRM affects high-temperature properties while UMO modifies low-temperature properties. Potential environmental concerns arising from the use of UMO have been raised in the literature. In this paper, the two recycled materials were investigated for their ability to complement each other. Both performance benefits of using both materials and the environmental concerns of using UMO were studied. Four CRM asphalt binders …
