Radiative Transfer Distortions Of Lyman Α Emitters: A New Fingers-Of-God Damping In The Clustering In Redshift Space, Chris Byrohl, Shun Saito, Christoph Behrens

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Complex radiative transfer (RT) of the Lyman α photons poses a theoretical challenge to galaxy surveys that infer the large-scale structure with Lyman α emitters (LAEs). Guided by RT simulations, prior studies investigated the impact of RT on the large-scale LAE clustering, and claimed that RT induces a selection effect which results in an anisotropic distortion even in real space but in an otherwise negligible effect in redshift space. However, our previous study, which relies on a full RT code run on the Illustris simulations, shows that the anisotropic selection effect was drastically reduced with higher spatial resolution. Adopting the …

Trouble free use of a product and its associated services for a specified minimum period of time is a major factor to win the customer's trust in the product. Rapid and easy serviceability to maintain its functionalities plays a key role in achieving this goal. However, the sustainability of such a model cannot be promised unless the current health status of the product is monitored and condition-based maintenance is exercised. Internet of Things (IoT), an important connectivity paradigm of recent times, which connects physical objects to the internet for real-time information exchange and execution of physical actions via wired/wireless protocols. …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

During the part forming in laser powder bed fusion process, thermal distortion is one big problem due to the thermal stress which is caused by the high cooling rate and temperature gradient. Therefore, it is important to know the effect of process parameters on thermal and stress evolution in the melt zone. In this paper, a 3D finite element model for Selective Laser Melting (SLM) process based on sequentially coupled thermo-mechanical field analysis was developed for accurately predicting thermal history and surface features, like distortion and residual stress. Temperature dependent material properties for performed material 304L stainless steel are incorporated …

Ultrafast Imaging Of The Renner-Teller Effect In A Field-Dressed Molecule, K. Amini, T. Steinle, M. Sclafani, M. Shaikh, A. Sanchez, X. Liu, Anh-Thu Le, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present experimental results of linear-to-bent transition of field-dressed molecules, mediated by Renner-Teller effect. Using the state-of-the-art laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED) technique, we image a bent and symmetrically stretched carbon disulfide (CS2) molecule populating an excited electronic state under the influence of strong laser field. Our findings are well-supported by ab initio quantum mechanical calculations.

Projectile Coherence Effects In Simple Atomic Systems, Michael Schulz, A. Hasan, B. Lamichhane, T. Arthanayaka, M. Dhital, S. Bastola, L. Nagy, S. Borbely, F. Jarai-Szabo

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recent studies of projectile coherence effects in ion-atom collisions are presented. For intermediate-energy proton collisions an extensive literature provides strong support for the importance of such effects. In this regime coherence effects are now used as a tool to study the few-body dynamics very sensitively. In contrast, for high-energy ion impact the literature is much sparser and here an important role of coherence effects cannot be regarded as being established. In this context, a recent claim that in COLTRIMS experiments the coherence properties are determined only by the target beam is rebutted.

Controlled Generation Of Dark-Bright Soliton Complexes In Two-Component And Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates, A. Romero-Ros, Garyfallia C. Katsimiga, P. G. Kevrekidis, P. Schmelcher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report on the controlled creation of multiple soliton complexes of the dark-bright type in one-dimensional two-component, three-component, and spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. The formation of solitonic entities of the dark-bright type is based on the so-called matter-wave interference of spatially separated condensates. In all three cases, a systematic numerical study is carried out upon considering different variations of each system's parameters both in the absence and in the presence of a harmonic trap. It is found that manipulating the initial separation or the chemical potential of the participating components allows us to tailor the number of nucleated dark-bright states. Particularly, …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We Investigate A Temporal Evolution Of An Impurity Atom In A One-Dimensional Trapped Bose Gas Following A Sudden Change Of The Boson-Impurity Interaction Strength. Our Focus Is On The Effects Of Inhomogeneity Due To The Harmonic Confinement. These Effects Can Be Described By An Effective One-Body Model Where Both The Mass And The Spring Constant Are Renormalized. This Is In Contrast To The Classic Renormalization, Which Addresses Only The Mass. We Propose An Effective Single-Particle Hamiltonian And Apply The Multilayer Multiconfiguration Time-Dependent Hartree Method For Bosons To Explore Its Validity. Numerical Results Suggest That The Effective Mass Is Smaller Than …

Dynamic graphs are an essential tool for representing a wide variety of concepts that change over time. Examples include modeling the evolution of relationships and communities in a social network or tracking the activity of users within an enterprise computer network. In the case of static graph representations, random graph models are often useful for analyzing and predicting the characteristics of a given network. Even though random dynamic graph models are a trending research topic, the field is still relatively unexplored. The selection of available models is limited and manually developing a model for a new application can be difficult …

This paper presents a new strategy of integrating lateral silicon nanospikes using metal-assisted chemical etching (MacEtch) on the sidewall of micropillars for on-chip bacterial study. Silicon nanospikes have been reported to be able to kill bacteria without using chemicals and offer a new route to kill bacteria and can prevent the overuse of antibiotics to reduce bacteria. We demonstrated a new methodology to fabricate a chip with integrated silicon nanospikes onto the sidewalls of micropillars inside the microfluidic channel and attested its interactions with the representative gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli. The results of colony-forming unit (CFU) calculation showed that 80% …

All-Sky Search For Continuous Gravitational Waves From Isolated Neutron Stars Using Advanced Ligo O2 Data, B. P. Abbott, R. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present results of an all-sky search for continuous gravitational waves (CWs), which can be produced by fast spinning neutron stars with an asymmetry around their rotation axis, using data from the second observing run of the Advanced LIGO detectors. Three different semicoherent methods are used to search in a gravitational-wave frequency band from 20 to 1922 Hz and a first frequency derivative from -1 × 10-8 to 2 × 10-9 Hz/s. None of these searches has found clear evidence for a CW signal, so upper limits on the gravitational-wave strain amplitude are calculated, which for this broad …

The Dependence Of Breakdown Field Upon Breakdown Delay Time In Adiabatically Compressed Ferroelectric Ceramics, Sergey I. Shkuratov, Jason Baird, Vladimir G. Antipov, Jay B. Chase

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The ability of ferroelectric materials to generate high voltage under mechanical stress is widely used in transducer applications. The high strain-rate adiabatic compression of poled ferroelectrics results in their complete depolarization, the release of surface charges, and the generation of up to hundreds of kilovolts of electric potential that is an order of magnitude higher than in the low-strain piezoelectric mode. Electric breakdown within adiabatically compressed ferroelectric specimens is one of the factors that affect the generation of a high voltage by ferroelectric materials under extreme stress. We report herein the results of experimental investigations of the generation of high …

The Blue Emission At 2.8 Ev In Strontium Titanate: Evidence For A Radiative Transition Of Self-Trapped Excitons From Unbound States, Miguel L. Crespillo, Joseph T. Graham, Fernando Agullo-Lopez, Y. Zhang, William J. Weber Jul 2019

The Blue Emission At 2.8 Ev In Strontium Titanate: Evidence For A Radiative Transition Of Self-Trapped Excitons From Unbound States, Miguel L. Crespillo, Joseph T. Graham, Fernando Agullo-Lopez, Y. Zhang, William J. Weber

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The origin of the blue emission in SrTiO3 has been investigated as a function of irradiation fluence, electronic excitation density, and temperature using a range of ion energies and masses. The emission clearly does not show correlation with the concentration of vacancies generated by irradiation but is greatly enhanced under heavy-ion irradiation. The intensity ratio of the 2.8 and 2.5 eV bands is independent of fluence at all temperatures, but it increases with excitation rate. The 2.8 eV emission is proposed to correspond to a transition from conduction band states to the ground state level of the self-trapped exciton …

Notes On The Economics Of Residential Hybrid Energy System, Mahelet G. Fikru, Gregory M. Gelles, Ana M. Ichim, Joseph D. Smith

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Despite advances in small-scale hybrid renewable energy technologies, there are limited economic frameworks that model the different decisions made by a residential hybrid system owner. We present a comprehensive review of studies that examine the techno-economic feasibility of small-scale hybrid energy systems, and we find that the most common approach is to compare the annualized life-time costs to the expected energy output and choose the system with the lowest cost per output. While practical, this type of benefit—cost analysis misses out on other production and consumption decisions that are simultaneously made when adopting a hybrid energy system. In this paper, …

Observing changes in molecular structure requires atomic-scale Ångstrom and femtosecond spatio-temporal resolution. We use the Fourier transform (FT) variant of laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED), FT-LIED, to directly retrieve the molecular structure of H2O+ with picometer and femtosecond resolution without a priori knowledge of the molecular structure nor the use of retrieval algorithms or ab initio calculations. We identify a symmetrically stretched H2O+ field-dressed structure that is most likely in the ground electronic state. We subsequently study the nuclear response of an isolated water molecule to an external laser field at four different field strengths. …

Stochastic Resonance Enables Bpp/Log∗ Complexity And Universal Approximation In Analog Recurrent Neural Networks, Emmett Redd, A. Steven Younger, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Stochastic resonance (SR) is a natural process that without limit increases the precision of signal measurements in biological and physical sciences. Most artificial neural networks (NNs) are implemented on digital computers of fixed precision. A NN accessing universal approximation and a computational complexity class more powerful that of a Turing machine needs analog signals utilizing SR's limitless precision increase. This paper links an analog recurrent (AR) NN theorem, SR, BPP/log∗ (a physically realizable, super-Turing computation class), and universal approximation so NNs following them can be made computationally more powerful. An optical neural network mimicking chaos indicates super-Turing computation has been …
