Self-Calibrating Uav Navigation: Reinforcement Learning Approaches For Horizontal Trajectory Estimation, Shirin Nasr-Esfahani, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Accurate unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) trajectory estimation is essential for autonomous navigation, particularly in GPS-denied environments. Visualodometry and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) approaches require precise camera intrinsic parameters, which are typically obtained through predefined or offline calibration. Instead, in this work, we propose a reinforcement learning (RL)-based self-calibration framework that estimates camera intrinsic parameters directly from monocular video sequences, without requiring prior knowledge of the camera, environment, or calibration targets. This intrinsic parameter estimation is then leveraged to achieve robust UAV trajectory estimation using only video data. We formulate the problem as a sequential decision-making task, where an RL …

Anisotropic Second-Harmonic Ince-Gaussian Beam Generation Using Nbobr2 Holograms, Jayanta Deka, Xiaodong Yang, Jie Gao

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ince-Gaussian (IG) modes are a complete and orthogonal set of solutions to the paraxial wave equation in elliptic coordinates representing a continuous transition between Hermite-Gaussian modes and Laguerre-Gaussian modes. Chip-scale platforms to generate IG beams have great significance for various applications, including optical trapping and micromanipulation of particles, optical communication, and quantum optics. On the other hand, materials with high optical anisotropy are crucial for building polarization-sensitive optical devices. In this context, niobium oxide dihalides are a new class of ferroelectric materials exhibiting strong, tailorable, and highly anisotropic second-harmonic generation responses. Here, we report the generation of highly anisotropic second-harmonic …

Theoretical Study Of Long-Range Molecular Interactions, Adrian Luis Batista-Planas Jan 2026

Theoretical Study Of Long-Range Molecular Interactions, Adrian Luis Batista-Planas

Doctoral Dissertations

Describing intermolecular forces is fundamental to modeling and predicting the behavior of molecular systems. In particular, long-range molecular interactions—with electrostatic, induction, and dispersion as main components—play a critical role, especially for low-temperature and low-density regimes. Long-range interactions are often described through perturbation theory, representing the electronic charge distribution via multipolar series of the moments and polarizability tensors corresponding to each molecule. However, while the theory is well-established, obtaining the resulting analytical expressions (and their practical implementation) constitutes a highly complex and system-dependent task. To address this challenge, we developed Long-Range-Fit (LRF), an interactive and user-friendly software package designed to automate …

Manufacturing And Performance Evaluation Of Carbon/Epoxy Laminated Composites Cured Using Single- And Six-Magnetron Microwave Applications, Nayan Pundhir

Doctoral Dissertations

Microwave curing is fast, energy-efficient, and a viable alternative to conventional thermal curing processes. It has been widely adopted for processing carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites because the high electrical conductivity of carbon fibers enables strong microwave coupling, leading to rapid volumetric heating and reduced energy consumption. The aim of this study is to investigate the use of microwave curing for manufacturing CFRP composites. IM7/Cycom 5320-1 unidirectional prepreg was utilized to fabricate laminated composites in two thickness ranges: 16-layer laminates (2.5 mm thickness) and 64-layer laminates (9.2 mm thickness). Two lay-up configurations were examined: symmetric cross-ply and quasi-isotropic. Different curing …

Impact Of Bubble-Induced Turbulence On Two-Phase Flow Dynamics At High Void Fraction In A Large Diameter Channel, Sungje Hong, Joshua P. Schlegel, Subash L. Sharma

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study represents the first investigation into the influence of bubble-induced turbulence (BIT) on interfacial area transport mechanisms in gas–liquid two-phase flows under conditions of high void fraction and high velocity in a large diameter channel. Given the unique characteristics of bubble flow in larger channels, the turbulent effects induced by bubbles differ from those observed in smaller channels. However, limited research exists regarding the impact of BIT beyond bubbly flows in large-diameter channels. To address this gap, two approaches for implementing the BIT model are explored: a direct method and an indirect method. This paper assesses both the general …

Equilibrium Stability Under Nuclear Confrontation, Martin Bohner, A. A. Martynyuk Jan 2026

Equilibrium Stability Under Nuclear Confrontation, Martin Bohner, A. A. Martynyuk

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article proposes and analyzes mathematical models of confrontation between two and n countries, including countries with nuclear weapons. The proposed models are based on a generalization of Richardson's well-known mathematical model of the arms race. Namely, the factor of hostility is filled with expanded content, including public opinion and the armed forces of the opposing countries. Qualitative analysis of confrontation models is carried out by the method of Lyapunov functions and by applying nonlinear integral inequalities. As a result of the analysis, the conditions for the stability of the equilibrium state of the opposing countries are established, and the …

Relativistic And Recoil Corrections To Light-Fermion Vacuum Polarization For Bound Systems Of Spin-0, Spin-1=2, And Spin-1 Particles, Gregory S. Adkins, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In bound systems whose constituent particles are heavier than the electron, the dominant radiative correction to energy levels is given by light-fermion (electronic) vacuum polarization. In consequence, relativistic and recoil corrections to the one-loop vacuum-polarization correction are phenomenologically relevant. Here, we generalize the treatment, previously accomplished for systems with orbiting muons, to bound systems of constituents with more general spins: spin-0, spin-1=2, and spin-1. We discuss the application of our more general expressions to various systems of interest, including spinless systems (pionium), muonic hydrogen and deuterium, and devote special attention to the excited non-S states of deuteronium, the bound system …

Threshold Asymmetric Conditional Autoregressive Range (Tacarr) Model, Isuru Ratnayake, V. A. Samaranayake

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces a Threshold Asymmetric Conditional Autoregressive Range (TACARR) model for analyzing the daily price ranges of financial assets. The proposed formulation assumes that the conditional expected range switches between two regimes, representing upward and downward market states, with the disturbance distribution also allowed to vary across regimes. A self-adjusting threshold component, determined by past values of the series, is used to identify the prevailing market regime. In this way, the model is able to capture asymmetric and heteroscedastic volatility behavior in financial markets. The TACARR model is designed to address several limitations of existing price range models, including …

We have recorded double, triple, and quadruple coincidences between neutralized projectiles, recoiling target ions, and two electrons created in collisions of slow anions with neutral atoms. The experiments were performed at the cryogenic storage ring in Heidelberg. The recoil ions and ejected electrons were momentum-analyzed using a Reaction Microscope (ReMi) spectrometer. Various processes involving electron detachment from the projectile accompanied by various transitions in the target were investigated. Detachment without any transition in the target is qualitatively well described by a quasi-free electron model in the case of an Ar target. In detachment with single target ionization, no signatures of …

Environmental Engineers Develop Solutions To Problems Of Planetary Health: The Legacy Of Professor P. Aarne Vesilind, Daniel B. Oerther

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The principal ethical obligation of the engineering profession, to "hold paramount the health, safety, and welfare of the public," has been challenged for decades. Professor P. Aarne Vesilind identified two primary deficiencies: an anthropocentric bias that values nature only instrumentally and the use of non-mandatory, aspirational language for environmental protection, which resulted in the exclusion of enforceable environmental canons. This paper argues that two recent developments provide a comprehensive response to Vesilind's recommendations for engineering ethics. First, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics has redefined environmental engineering as "developing solutions to problems of planetary health." Second, Oerther proposed a …

Smartflow: A Communication-Efficient Sdn Framework For Cross-Silo Federated Learning, Osama Abu Hamdan, Hao Che, Engin Arslan, Md Arifuzzaman

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cross-silo Federated Learning (FL) enables multiple institutions to collaboratively train machine learning models while preserving data privacy. In such settings, clients repeatedly exchange model weights with a central server, making the overall training time highly sensitive to network performance. However, conventional routing methods often fail to prevent congestion, leading to increased communication latency and prolonged training. Software-Defined Networking (SDN), which provides centralized and programmable control over network resources, offers a promising way to address this limitation. To this end, we propose SmartFLow, an SDN-based framework designed to enhance communication efficiency in cross-silo FL. SmartFLow dynamically adjusts routing paths in response …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Federated Learning (FL) presents a robust paradigm for privacy-preserving, decentralized machine learning. However, a significant gap persists between the theoretical design of FL algorithms and their practical performance, largely because existing evaluation tools often fail to model realistic operational conditions. Many testbeds oversimplify the critical dynamics among algorithmic efficiency, client-level heterogeneity, and continuously evolving network infrastructure. To address this challenge, we introduce the Federated Learning Emulation and Evaluation Testbed (FLEET). This comprehensive platform provides a scalable and configurable environment by integrating a versatile, framework-agnostic learning component with a high-fidelity network emulator. FLEET supports diverse machine learning frameworks, customizable real-world network …

Dynamic Hub-Aware Knowledge Distillation For Efficient Traffic Flow Forecasting, Xiangjie Kong, Can Shu, Wenchao Weng, Zhenzhen Zhao, Guojiang Shen, Lei Wang, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Real-time traffic forecasting acts as a critical enabling service for IoT-driven Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). While existing Spatiotemporal Graph Neural Networks (STGNNs) achieve superior forecasting accuracy, their intensive computational complexity and high latency create a deployment bottleneck for resource-constrained IoT edge devices. To address this resource-accuracy mismatch, we propose a novel framework termed Dynamic Hub-Aware Knowledge Distillation (DHKD). Unlike traditional uniform distillation paradigms, DHKD introduces a topology-aware strategy to transfer knowledge from a complex teacher to a lightweight Spatiotemporal Multi-Layer Perceptron (STMLP) student model. Specifically, we design a dynamic hub-aware gating (DHAG) mechanism that adaptively identifies time-varying pivotal sensing nodes …

Orchestrating Bone Healing: Biomaterial-Driven Immunoengineering Of The Bone Microenvironment For Advanced Regenerative Therapies, Ah Joung Rachel Yu, Mohammad Reza Zare, Edikan Ogunnaike, Mostafa Yazdi

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Bone regeneration is a multistage and tightly regulated process driven by coordinated interactions between the immune and skeletal systems. While inflammation is essential for initiating repair, its dysregulation contributes to delayed union, nonunion, and impaired healing commonly seen in trauma, chronic disease, and aging. Traditional interventions, including autografts and inert biomaterials, provide structural support but fail to engage or modulate the immune microenvironment that governs successful regeneration. Emerging research in osteoimmunology has revealed the centrality of immune cell populations such as macrophages, T regulatory cells, dendritic cells, and myeloid-derived suppressor cells in directing osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and the resolution of inflammation. …

Upconversion Photoluminescence In Wsse Alloy Monolayer Under Uniaxial Tensile Strain, Shrawan Roy, Jie Gao, Xiaodong Yang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The optical responses of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (1L-TMDs) can be tuned effectively by using mechanical strain. In this work, the tuning of upconversion photoluminescence (UPL) emission in 1L-WSSe alloy by applying uniaxial tensile strain is investigated. When the uniaxial tensile strain is changed from 0 % to 1.02 %, the peak position of UPL emission has a redshift of around 25.6 nm, and the UPL intensity goes up with an exponential function of the applied strain as the upconversion energy difference is varied from −197 meV to −131 meV. The sublinear power dependence for UPL emission in 1L-WSSe alloy …

Temperature Compensation In Loop And Patch Fss Strain Sensors: Analysis And Experimental Validation, Swathi Muthyala Ramesh, Kristen M. Donnell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) are arrays of conductive elements or apertures that exhibit frequency-dependent reflection and transmission properties. Their electromagnetic response is influenced by geometry and environmental conditions, making them attractive for wireless strain-sensing applications. However, temperature variations can produce frequency shifts similar to those caused by strain, reducing measurement accuracy. This work investigates the effects of intrinsic temperature compensation on two common FSS unit cell geometries—loop and patch—through comprehensive simulation analysis. The results show that loop-based cells offer superior thermal stability, while patch-based cells provide greater strain sensitivity, illustrating the trade-off between thermal robustness and mechanical responsiveness. A patch-type …

Metal-coated optical fibers are widely employed in sensing applications owing to their superior mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. However, their calibration at elevated temperatures is hindered by hysteresis, manifested as discrepancies between heating and cooling cycles, primarily caused by residual strain from mismatched thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) between the metal coating and silica cladding. This research introduces an optimal heat treatment procedure aimed at minimizing the impact of the mismatch in TECs between the cladding and the coating materials that causes the residual strain in gold (Au) and copper (Cu) coated fibers for achieving reliable distributed high temperature sensing up …

Integrating Optical And Radiofrequency Interferometry For Enhanced Phase Sensing, Ruimin Jie, Zhaopeng Zhang, Chen Zhu, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Interferometry is a crucial investigative technique used across diverse fields to achieve high-precision measurements. It works by analyzing the phase difference between two interfering waves, which results from variations in optical path lengths within an interferometer. We introduce a novel method for directly measuring changes in the phase difference within an optical interferometer, importantly, with the added advantage of a controllable enhancement factor. This approach is achieved through a two-step process: first, the optical phase difference is encoded into a sub-GHz radiofrequency (RF) signal using microwave-photonic manipulation; then, RF interferometry-assisted phase amplification is implemented at the destructive interference point. In …
