Noise Resilient Learning For Attack Detection In Smart Grid Pmu Infrastructure, Prithwiraj Roy, Shameek Bhattacharjee, Sahar Abedzadeh, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Falsified data from compromised Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) in a smart grid induce Energy Management Systems (EMS) to have an inaccurate estimation of the state of the grid, disrupting various operations of the power grid. Moreover, the PMUs deployed at the distribution layer of a smart grid show dynamic fluctuations in their data streams, which make it extremely challenging to design effective learning frameworks for anomaly-based attack detection. In this paper, we propose a noise resilient learning framework for anomaly-based attack detection specifically for distribution layer PMU infrastructure, that show real time indicators of data falsifications attacks while offsetting the …

Rssafe: Personalized Driver Behavior Prediction For Safe Driving, Bhumika, Debasis Das, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

While the increased demand for taxi services like Uber, Lyft, Hailo, Ola, Grab, Cabify etc. provides livelihood to many drivers, the desire to raise income forces the drivers to work very hard without rest. However, continuous journeys not only affect their health, but also lead to abnormal driving behavior such as rash driving, swerving, sideslipping, sudden brakes, or weaving, leading to accidents in the worst cases. Motivated by the severity of rising accidents and health issues among drivers, this paper proposes a recommendation system, called RsSafe, for the safety of drivers. Aiming to improve the driving quality and the driver's …

An Icn-Based Secure Task Cooperation Scheme In Challenging Wireless Edge Networks, Ningchun Liu, Shuai Gao, Teng Liang, Xindi Hou, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Task cooperation is an effective way to execute a complex task in challenging wireless edge networks. Existing TCP/IP-based solutions encounter the problem of low network resource utilization and the heavy dependency of infrastructure connections. Information-centric networking (ICN) is a promising architecture to address these issues. In existing ICN-based task cooperation schemes, the data reuse feature of ICN improves the utilization of network resources, which also brings potential security threats to the reused data. To guarantee the security of data reuse in task cooperation without affecting the data reuse feature, we propose an ICN-based secure task cooperation scheme. In our scheme, …

Spade: Multi-Stage Spam Account Detection For Online Social Networks, Federico Concone, Giuseppe Lo Re, Marco Morana, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In recent years, Online Social Networks (OSNs) have radically changed the way people communicate. The most widely used platforms, such as Facebook, Youtube, and Instagram, claim more than one billion monthly active users each. Beyond these, news-oriented micro-blogging services, e.g., Twitter, are daily accessed by more than 120 million users sharing contents from all over the world. Unfortunately, legitimate users of the OSNs are mixed with malicious ones, which are interested in spreading unwanted, misleading, harmful, or discriminatory content. Spam detection in OSNs is generally approached by considering the characteristics of the account under analysis, its connection with the rest …

Sum-Rate Optimization For Visible-Light-Band Uav Networks Based On Particle Swarm Optimization, Yuwei Long, Nan Cen

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The mobility nature of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) takes them into high consideration in military, public, and civilian applications in recent years. However, scaling out millions of UAVs in the air will inevitably lead to a more crowded radio frequency (RF) spectrum. Therefore, researchers have been focused on new technologies such as millimeter-wave, Terahertz, and visible light communications (VLCs) to alleviate the spectrum crunch problem. VLC has shown its great potential for UAV networking because of its high data rate, interference-free to legacy RF spectrum, and low-complex frontends. While the physical layer design of the VLC system has been extensively …

Resonance Analysis Between Deck And Cables In Cable-Stayed Bridges With Coupling Effect Of Adjacent Cables Considered, Houjun Kang, Yunpeng Cai, Yunyue Cong, Xiaoyang Su, Guirong Grace Yan

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The nonlinear dynamic model of a shallow arch with multiple cables is developed to model a long-span cable-stayed bridge. Based on the veering phenomenon of cable-stayed bridges, the in-plane modal internal resonance between the first mode of the shallow arch and the first mode of the cable is investigated under both primary resonance and subharmonic resonance. Modulation equations of the dynamic system are obtained by Galerkin discretization and the multiple scales method, in which the equilibrium solution of modulation equations is obtained by the Newton–Raphson method. Meanwhile, the Runge–Kutta method is applied to directly solve the ordinary differential equations to …

Continuous And Discrete Models For Optimal Harvesting In Fisheries, Nagham Abbas Al Qubbanchee Jan 2022

Continuous And Discrete Models For Optimal Harvesting In Fisheries, Nagham Abbas Al Qubbanchee

Masters Theses

"This work focuses on the logistic growth model, where the Gordon-Schaefer model is considered in continuous time. We view the Gordon-Schaefer model as a bioeconomic equation involved in the fishing business, considering biological rates, carrying capacity, and total marginal costs and revenues. In [25], the authors illustrate the analytical solution of the Schaefer model using the integration by parts method and two theorems. The theorems have many assumptions with many different strategies. Due to the nature of the problem, the optimal control system involves many equations and functions, such as the second root of the equation. We concentrate on Theorem …

Developing A Vr Training Model For Improving Transportation Safety Protocols For Rural Areas, Emmanuel Olumide Adeosun

Masters Theses

"This research evaluated the effectiveness of using simulated virtual reality driving environments to improve transportation safety in rural areas. The transportation accident fatality rate is more than double the national average in rural areas and highlights an important opportunity to address these challenges through improved safety protocols and investments. A review of the literature revealed high frequency scenarios that contributed the most to fatality or injury accidents. Virtual reality driving simulations were created based on these high frequency events using a specified rural roadway identified with the assistance of the Missouri Department of Transportation. Scenarios considered weather-related conditions, such as …

Using Lake Sediment Chemistry In The Exploration For Nickel Laterite Deposits In Tropical Regions, Gabriela Yvonne Ramirez

Masters Theses

"Developing reliable geochemical indicators to guide the search for ore deposits is a long-standing goal. This particularly applies to tropical regions that are often heavily vegetated which hampers boots-on-the ground exploration efforts. Here we present the preliminary results of a study that investigates the usefulness of lake sediment chemistry in the exploration for nickel laterite ore deposits in tropical regions using Lake Izabal, Guatemala, as a case study. Lake Izabal’s catchment area contains Ni laterite deposits along its northern shore, whereas no Ni-laterite discoveries have been made in the south except for a Ni mine in the southern region that …

Lithofacies Characterization Of Marine Shelf Shale And Implicaitons On Depositional Conditions And Processes On The Continental Shelf — A Case Study Of The Upper-Cretaceous Tuscaloosa Marine Shale In Louisiana And Mississippi, U.S.A., Efren Mendez Jr

Masters Theses

"The Upper Cretaceous Tuscaloosa Marine Shale (TMS) is an unconventional shale reservoir deposited on the continental shelf of the northern Gulf of Mexico Basin. Previous studies have focused on sequence stratigraphy, thermal modeling, and well-log correlations. However, a limited understanding of the stratigraphic heterogeneity of the TMS is yet to be studied. This study aims to characterize the stratigraphic heterogeneity of the TMS using core, petrographic, and well-log analyses to better understand the depositional conditions and processes that occur on the continental shelf. The TMS has been classified into four lithofacies of very fine sands – coarse silts (LF1), medium-fine …

"Multiphase flows are a significant factor in nuclear reactor operations. In order to understand this behavior in reactor systems, system analysis codes are used to simulate reactor conditions. Due to the nature of the nuclear industry, simulations predicting the void development in the core are required to be highly accurate. This work evaluated the sensitivity of the void fraction and interfacial area concentration predictions to changes in correlations used to calculate three parameters that are used to complete the interfacial drag calculation. The three parameters evaluated were drift-flux, void fraction covariance, and interfacial area concentration. The change in drift-flux correlation …

Post-Seismic Response And Repair Of Earthquake-Damaged Reinforced Concrete Bridges, Giacomo Fraioli Jan 2022

Post-Seismic Response And Repair Of Earthquake-Damaged Reinforced Concrete Bridges, Giacomo Fraioli

Doctoral Dissertations

“In bridge structures, column members are typically designed to be the primary source of energy dissipation during an earthquake. Therefore, reinforced concrete (RC) bridges that are damaged in an earthquake tend to have damage to the column members. While many studies have been conducted on seismic strengthening of RC bridge columns, most are focused on retrofit instead of repair. In addition, the limited research on seismic repair of RC bridges has focused on evaluating the response of individual columns (member level), not the bridge structure (system level), due to limitations in modeling and especially testing of full bridge structures. Local …

Design Methods For Pressure Relief Well Systems At Dams And Levees, Andrew Keffer

Doctoral Dissertations

"Flood risk reduction structures such as dams and levees are important systems that provide significant benefits to the nation. Relief wells reduce the substratum water pressures that can compromise them via internal erosion. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) analytical method to design relief well systems by calculating discharge and excess head along an infinite line of wells was developed from the 1930s – 1950s. The research presented here increases our understanding of the method’s history and uses analytical and numerical models to improve current infinite and finite well system design practices. The historical development of this method was …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

At present, the wildfire smoke detection algorithm based on YOLOv3 has problems, such as low accuracy and slow detection speed. In this article, we propose a cross-layer extraction structure and multiscale downsampling network with bidirectional transpose FPN (BCMNet) for fast detection of wildfire smoke. First, a cross-layer extraction module, which combines linear feature multiplexing and receptive field amplification, is designed. It can improve the speed and accuracy of wildfire smoke detection. Second, a multiscale downsampling module with different convolution kernels and maximum pooling operation is designed to preserve the details of the image while downsampling. Then, a bidirectional transposed FPN …

A Drone-Based Application For Scouting Halyomorpha Halys Bugs In Orchards With Multifunctional Nets, Francesco Betti Sorbelli, Federico Coro, Sajal K. Das, Emanuele Di Bella, Lara Maistrello, Lorenzo Palazzetti, Cristina M. Pinotti

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, we consider the problem of using a drone to collect information within orchards in order to scout insect pests, i.e., the stink bug Halyomorpha halys. An orchard can be modeled as an aisle-graph, which is a regular and constrained data structure formed by consecutive aisles where trees are arranged in a straight line. For monitoring the presence of bugs, a drone flies close to the trees and takes videos and/or pictures that will be analyzed offline. As the drone's energy is limited, only a subset of locations in the orchard can be visited with a fully charged …

Improving Age Of Information With Interference Problem In Long-Range Wide Area Networks, Preti Kumari, Hari Prabhat Gupta, Tanima Dutta, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) offer a promising wireless communications technology for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Among various existing LPWAN technologies, Long-Range WAN (LoRaWAN) consumes minimal power and provides virtual channels for communication through spreading factors. However, LoRaWAN suffers from the interference problem among nodes connected to a gateway that uses the same spreading factor. Such interference increases data communication time, thus reducing data freshness and suitability of LoRaWAN for delay-sensitive applications. To minimize the interference problem, an optimal allocation of the spreading factor is requisite for determining the time duration of data transmission. This paper proposes a …

Graphene Based Tunable Terahertz Holographic Antennas, Pengfei Ren, Lijun Jiang, Ping Li

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, several representative terahertz (THz) graphene holographic impedance surface antenna are presented. Different to the conventional impedance surface antenna that manipulates the surface impedance via varying the patch size in each unit cell, the surface impedance of the proposed antenna in this paper is readily controlled by applying a tunable DC biasing to each graphene patch cell, the physics behind which is that the conductivity of the graphene is a function of imposed voltage. Thus, the graphene patches of the proposed antenna have same size as well as equal spacing, which makes the modeling process more convenient and …

Application Of Uniform Test Design In Optimizing The Flotation Reagents Of Iron Anionic Reverse Flotation Circuit, Ying Hou, Ahmed Sobhy

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Most iron reserves are low in grade with quartz as the main gangue mineral, and anionic reverse flotation has become the most crucial separation method in the processing plants of iron ore. Thus, a flotation feed sample that is a mixture of low-intensity and high-gradient magnetic separators concentrates was acquired from a processing plant. The sample characterizations with X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), laser particle size analyzer, and mineral liberation analysis (MLA) confirmed that the sample consists of iron oxide as a valuable mineral and quartz as a gangue mineral with adequate liberation degree. In the anionic reverse flotation, …

Simulation Study Of A Probabilistic Measurement Terminator For Cloud Radar Systems Using Cloudsat Data, Jakob Delong, Joel T. Johnson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a novel probabilistic method that is used to identify low-SNR measurements in a cloud profiling radar application and terminate them before completion to save resources. The method uses a statistical model to predict the final SNR level of a measurement in progress and terminate it if it falls below a specified threshold at a specified level of confidence. The method is applied in a simulation study in which radar backscattered power profiles are obtained from CloudSat radar data, and is shown to achieve favorable performance.

According to the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) report in 2017, Egypt produced 500,000 tonnes of WCO from various resources including food industries, restaurants and hotels. Based on our previous funded project, we have reported unique properties for Egyptian WCO as it has very high range acidity (≈18 mg KOH/ g oil) due to the extensive usage of oil in the cooking process. Further, the repeated heating of cooking oil for long time produces carcinogenic compounds that have significant impact on people health. On the other hand, high acidity WCO could be valorised into soap, biodiesel and value …

Feature Learning For Optimal Control With B-Spline Representations, Vinay Kenny, Sixiong You, Chaoying Pei, Ran Dai Jan 2022

Feature Learning For Optimal Control With B-Spline Representations, Vinay Kenny, Sixiong You, Chaoying Pei, Ran Dai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The paper develops a feature learning-based method to solve optimal control problems using B-splines to approximate the optimal solutions. The feature learning-based optimal control method can quickly generate near-optimal trajectories for general optimal control problems subject to system dynamics and constraints. The steps in the proposed method are as follows: Firstly, by representing the state and control variables with B-spline functions, the optimal control problem is converted into an approximate nonlinear programming (NLP) problem, where parameters of the B-splines are identified as features of the optimal solution. Secondly, for a specific problem with designated inputs, a dataset of the optimal …

Proton Radius: A Puzzle Or A Solution!?, Ulrich D. Jentschura Jan 2022

Proton Radius: A Puzzle Or A Solution!?, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The proton radius puzzle is known as the discrepancy of the proton radius, obtained from muonic hydrogen spectroscopy (obtained as being roughly equal to 0.84 fm), and the proton radius obtained from (ordinary) hydrogen spectroscopy where a number of measurements involving highly excited states have traditionally favored a value of about 0.88 fm. Recently, a number of measurements of hydrogen transitions by the Munich (Garching) groups (notably, several hyperfine-resolved sublevels of the 2S-4P) and by the group at the University of Toronto (2S-2P 1/2) have led to transition frequency data consistent with the smaller proton radius of about 0.84 fm. …
