Excessive water production from oil reservoirs not only affects the economical production of oil, but it also results in serious environmental concerns. Polymer gels have been widely applied to decrease water production and thus improve oil production. However, traditional polymer gels such as partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM)/chromium (III) gel systems usually have a short gelation time and cannot meet the requirement of some conformance control projects. This paper introduces a novel polymer gel system of which crosslinking time can be significantly delayed. A branched polymer grafted from arginine by the surface initiation method is synthesized as the backbone, chromium acetate …

Nodule Formation On Copper Electrodeposits In The Rotating Cylinder Hull Cell, Joseph Bauer, Michael S. Moats
Nodule Formation On Copper Electrodeposits In The Rotating Cylinder Hull Cell, Joseph Bauer, Michael S. Moats
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Nodulation formation during the electrolytic production of high-purity copper can lead to impurity entrapment and/or increased energy consumption. The rotating cylinder Hull cell (RCHC) was used to study copper nodule formation under mass transport conditions similar to industrial electrolytic copper production. The main advantage of the RCHC is that a wide range of current densities can be produced in a single experiment with well-defined mass transfer conditions. Visible nodule formation was observed at current densities greater than 250 A/m2, which is an iavg/iL ratio of 0.30 for a simulated conventional electrowinning cell. Statistical analysis was also performed using the Weibull …

The controlled creation of dark-bright (DB) soliton trains in multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is a topic of ongoing interest. In this work we generalize earlier findings on the creation of dark soliton trains in single-component BECs [A. Romero-Ros, Phys. Rev. A 103, 023329 (2021)2469-992610.1103/PhysRevA.103.023329] to two-component BECs. By choosing suitable filled box-type initial configurations (FBTCs) and solving the direct scattering problem for the defocusing vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero boundary conditions we obtain analytical expressions for the DB soliton solutions produced by a general FBTC. It is found that the size of the initial box and the amount of …

Study Of Synaptic Properties Of Honey Thin Film For Neuromorphic Systems, Brandon Sueoka, Kuan Yew Cheong, Feng Zhao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Besides conventional electrical properties, materials for emerging artificial synaptic devices in brain-inspired neuromorphic systems need to have properties analogous to those of biological synapses, such as synaptic plasticity. In this work, we investigated, for the first time, the synaptic properties of a natural bio-organic material – honey. The honey film was sandwiched between Ag and ITO to form a structure resembling biological synapse. Neural facilitation, an essential synaptic plasticity, was demonstrated by honey thin film with a larger facilitation index, wider interval time range and higher dynamic filtering gain than other natural bio-organic materials. The results indicate that honey is …

These data were acquired to estimate the parameters of a closed form solution of a one-dimensional transient convection heat diffusion PDE. The purpose was to demonstrate that the model could be used to determine the thermal conductivity. The system was tested for a wide range of thermal conductivity, 15-400 W/mK, in order to verify that the method was applicable for various materials. The data reported here refer to the study in the research articles, “Material Thermal Properties Estimation Via a One-Dimensional Transient Convection Model” and “Influence of porosity on the thermal, electrical, and mechanical performance of selective laser melted stainless …

The molecules 1,1-difluorosilacyclopent-3-ene (3SiCPF2) and silacyclopent-3-ene (3SiCP) have been synthesized and studied using chirped pulse, Fourier transform microwave (CP-FTMW) spectroscopy. For 3SiCP this is the first ever microwave study of the molecule and, for 3SiCPF2, the spectra reported in this work have been combined with that of previous work in a global fit. The spectra of each contain splitting which has been fit using a Hamiltonian consisting of semirigid and Coriolis coupling parameters. A refit of the original 3SiCPF2 work was also carried out. All fits and approaches are reported. Analyses of the spectra provide evidence that the molecule is …

Improving the performance of existing cathode materials of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) through surface modification has been proven to be an effective way to improve the performance of LIBs. However, it is a challenge to use a traditional method to prepare an effective coating film, which meets the requirements of uniformity, continuity, electrochemical stability, and strong mechanical properties. In this study, an ultrathin AlF3-Al2O3 film was coated on the surface of Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2 (LRNMC) particles by atomic layer deposition (ALD) in a fluidized bed reactor. A cathode electrolyte …

Blockchain is the next generation of secure data management that creates near-immutable decentralized storage. Secure cryptography created a niche for blockchain to provide alternatives to well-known security compromises. However, design bottlenecks with traditional blockchain data structures scale poorly with increased network usage and are extremely computation-intensive. This made the technology difficult to combine with limited devices, like those in Internet of Things networks. In protocols like IOTA, replacement of blockchain's linked-list queue processing with a lightweight dynamic ledger showed remarkable throughput performance increase. However, current stochastic algorithms for ledger construction suffer distinct trade-offs between efficiency and security. This work proposed …

Biopolymers and alkali-activated materials have attracted a great deal of attention as adsorbents for the removal of heavy metal contaminants from aqueous solutions. Both materials are sustainable and feature unique properties, but biopolymers are relatively more expensive or difficult to prepare and exhibit low mechanical and surface properties, a narrow pH range, and thermal stability. In this study, hybrid adsorbents were prepared from both types of material, by alkali activation of low-cost fly ash precursors accompanied by incorporation of 0-2%mass chitosan biopolymer. Two types of alkaline activating solutions, NaOH and Na2SiO3, were employed to generate two sets of hybrid adsorbents …

Stabilizing The Interface Of All-Solid-State Electrolytes Against Cathode Electrodes By Atomic Layer Deposition, Ye Jin, Han Yu, Xiaoqing He, Xinhua Liang
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In recent years, with the severe safety problems of organic electrolytes, all-solid-state electrolytes (ASSEs) have been considered as an appealing choice to replace organic electrolytes due to their high reliability and safety. However, the uncontrolled interfacial chemical reactions between electrodes and ASSEs would lead to high interfacial resistance, which is detrimental for the battery performance. In this work, LiFePO4 (LFP) particles were coated with ultra-thin ZrO2 films by atomic layer deposition (ALD) and the effects of thin film coating on the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries using the NASICON-type Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4) …

Most of the traditional attosecond pulse retrieval algorithms are based on a so-called attosecond streak camera technique, in which the momentum of the electron is shifted by an amount depending on the relative time delay between the attosecond pulse and the streaking infrared pulse. Thus, temporal information of the attosecond pulse is encoded in the amount of momentum shift in the streaked photoelectron momentum spectrogram S(p, τ), where p is the momentum of the electron along the polarization direction and τ is the time delay. An iterative algorithm is then employed to reconstruct the attosecond pulse from the streaking spectrogram. …

Results are presented of searches for continuous gravitational waves from 20 accreting millisecond x-ray pulsars with accurately measured spin frequencies and orbital parameters, using data from the third observing run of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The search algorithm uses a hidden Markov model, where the transition probabilities allow the frequency to wander according to an unbiased random walk, while the J-statistic maximum-likelihood matched filter tracks the binary orbital phase. Three narrow subbands are searched for each target, centered on harmonics of the measured spin frequency. The search yields 16 candidates, consistent with a false alarm probability of …

The workability mechanism of fresh concrete at the molecular level remains essentially unexplored. To understand the molecular origin for cement fluidity, molecular dynamics and Density Function Theory (DFT) were utilized to construct a shear model of Calcium-Silicate-Hydrate (C-S-H) layers. The structure, dynamics, and reactivity of ultra-confined pore solution between C-S-H gels are systematically investigated. Under shear loading, periodic oscillation of friction force is observed as the typically Couette flow and the interfacial friction force is reduced from 35.2 Kcal/mol·Å to 3.3 Kcal/mol·Å with water content increasing. All of the systems contain breakage of noncovalent bonds of water-Ca and water-water in …

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively used as drug delivery platforms because of their considerable textural properties and physiochemical tunability. However, most medicinal treatments often administer multiple therapeutic pharmaceuticals simultaneously and combined drug delivery over a single MOF carrier has not been extensively developed. As such, in this study we implemented Mg-MOF-74, which is known to have rapid pharmacokinetic properties, for the combined delivery of ibuprofen and curcumin to demonstrate the proof-of-concept for dual-drug delivery over this previously unexplored MOF. To this end, 30 wt % total drug loading of two drugs was impregnated at various ratios (25:5 ibuprofen-curcumin, 20:5 …

This paper reports a novel extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI)-based fiber optic sensor for force measurement. The prototype force sensor consists of two EFPIs mounted on a stainless-steel rectangular frame. The primary sensing element, i.e., the first EFPI, is formed between the endface of a horizontally placed optical fiber and a stainless-steel buckled beam. The second EFPI, fashioned between a longitudinally placed optical fiber and a silver-coated glass beam, is arranged to demonstrate the amplification mechanism of the buckled beam structure. When the sensor is subjected to a tension force, the pre-buckled beam will deflect backward, resulting in a longitudinal/axial displacement …

Recently, membrane-active peptides or proteins that include antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), cytolytic proteins, and cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) have attracted attention due to their potential applications in the biomedical field. Among them, CPPs have been regarded as a potent drug/molecules delivery system. Various cargoes, such as DNAs, RNAs, bioactive proteins/peptides, nanoparticles and drugs, can be carried by CPPs and delivered into cells in either covalent or non-covalent manners. Here, we focused on four arginine-rich CPPs and reviewed the mechanisms that these CPPs used for intracellular uptake across cellular plasma membranes. The varying trans-duction efficiencies of them alone or with cargoes were discussed, …

The authors would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused. We are sorry that there is a mistake in the paper of "Performance test of the electromagnetic particle detectors for the LHAASO experiment". That is the figure 11 was submitted by mistake. During the ED's performance test, the definition of charge resolution of single particle developed a little bit which brought confusions. In the beginning, we define [Formula presented], where MPV is the maximum of the fitted function. Then we use [Formula presented], however it is related to the range of spectrum. Finally, we use [Formula …

Selective laser melting (SLM) additive manufacturing (AM) exhibits uncertainties, where variations in build quality are present despite utilizing the same optimized processing parameters. In this work, we identify the sources of uncertainty in SLM process by in-situ characterization of SLM dynamics induced by small variations in processing parameters. We show that variations in the laser beam size, laser power, laser scan speed, and powder layer thickness result in significant variations in the depression zone, melt pool, and spatter behavior. On average, a small deviation of only ~5% from the optimized/reference laser processing parameter resulted in a ~10% or greater change …

In this work, we study the current coupled to a simplified Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) model using a dual computational and experimental approach. The simplified surrogate structure reduced the computational burden and facilitated the experimental measurement of the coupled currents. For a practical system, a wide range of simulations and measurements must be performed to analyze the induced current variations with respect to properties of the incident excitation waveform, such as the frequency, angle of incidence, and polarization. To simplify this analysis, Characteristic Mode Analysis (CMA) was used to compute the eigen-currents of the UAV model and predict where and …

Partitioning large matrices is an important problem in distributed linear algebra computing, used in ML among others. Briefly, our goal is to perform a sequence of matrix algebra operations in a distributed manner on these large matrices. However, not all partitioning schemes work well with different matrix algebra operations and their implementations (algorithms). This is a type of data tiling problem. In this paper we consider a data tiling problem using hypergraphs. We prove some hardness results and give a theoretical characterization of its complexity on random instances. Additionally, we develop a greedy algorithm and experimentally show its efficacy.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (or drones) can be used for a myriad of civil applications, such as search and rescue, precision agriculture, or last-mile package delivery. Interestingly, the cooperation between drones and ground vehicles (trucks) can even enhance the quality of service. In this paper, we investigate the symbiosis among a truck and multiple drones in a last-mile package delivery scenario, introducing the Multiple Drone-Delivery Scheduling Problem (MDSP). From the main depot, a truck takes care of transporting a team of drones that will be used to deliver packages to customers. Each delivery is associated with a drone's energy cost, a …

We investigate the behavior of the frustrated J1-J2 Ising model on a square lattice under the influence of random dilution and spatial anisotropies. Spinless impurities generate a random-field type disorder for the spin-density wave (stripe) order parameter. These random fields destroy the long-range stripe order in the case of spatially isotropic interactions. Combining symmetry arguments, percolation theory, and large-scale Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate that arbitrarily weak spatial interaction anisotropies restore the stripe phase. More specifically, the transition temperature Tc into the stripe phase depends on the interaction anisotropy ΔJ via Tc∼1/|ln(ΔJ)| for small …

To reduce the energy-intensity and carbon footprint of Portland cement (PC), the prevailing practice embraced by concrete technologists is to partially replace the PC in concrete with supplementary cementitious materials [SCMs: geological materials (e.g., limestone); industrial by-products (e.g., fly ash); and processed materials (e.g., calcined clay)]. Chemistry and content of the SCM profoundly affect PC hydration kinetics; which, in turn, dictates the evolutions of microstructure and properties of the [PC + SCM] binder. Owing to the substantial diversity in SCMs' compositions-plus the massive combinatorial spaces, and the highly nonlinear and mutually-interacting processes that arise from SCM-PC interactions-state-of-the-art computational models are …

This paper proposes an interleaved high step-up DC-DC converter with the coupled inductor (CI) and built-in transformer (BIT) for renewable energy applications. Two double-winding (2W) CIs and one triple-winding (3W) BIT are integrated with the switched-capacitor (SC) voltage multiplier cells (VMCs) to achieve high-voltage gains without extreme duty cycles. The CIs and BIT turns-ratios provide two other degrees of freedom -- in addition to the duty cycle -- to adjust the voltage gain that leads to increased design flexibility. The diodes turn off naturally under the zero-current switching (ZCS) conditions because their current falling rates are controlled by the leakage …

A performance-based mixture design approach was utilized to optimize the binder content and composition for fiber-reinforced super workable concrete (FR-SWC) and fiber-reinforced self-consolidating concrete (FR-SCC). The test parameters included the replacement ratio of the cement by a Class C fly ash (FA), type and content of expansive agent (EA), and total binder content. Hooked-end steel fibers measuring 30 mm in length were used at 0.5% by volume. The investigated concrete was tested for slump flow, modified J-ring, sieve stability, bleeding, visual stability index, air content, unit weight, as well as compressive and splitting tensile strengths. The elastic modulus, autogenous, drying …
