A Planar Low-Profile Meander Antenna Design For Wireless Terminal Achieving Low Rf Interference And High Isolation In Multi-Antenna Systems, Yang Xiao, Yihong Qi, Wei Yu, Ye Hai Bi, Xiangrui Su, Chunyu Wu, Qiang Liu, Jun Fan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this article, a meander line internal antenna used for wireless terminal is proposed. The current of this antenna is mostly distributed on the antenna radiator itself, rather than on the main board of the wireless device. As a result, the chance of having radiofrequency (RF) interference issues, which usually result in receiver desensitization in wireless radios, can be significantly reduced. The antenna has good radiation performance in the vertical polarization with a low physical profile, compared with the existing antenna designs for typical wireless terminals. The antenna has efficiency similar to the monopole antenna with much less reference/ground plane …

Over the last few decades, wildfires in the United States have caused severe damage and property losses. As more houses are being built in areas prone to wildfire, enhancing the fire resistance of structures and buildings is critical and in great need. This paper presents a preliminary study to explore and develop some innovative surface-bonded fire-resistant coating materials for this purpose. The feasibility of these materials [i.e., high performance cement mortar (HPCM), geopolymer mortar (GPM), and magnesium phosphate cement mortar (MPCM)] was assessed considering the workability, adhesion to structure surface, and fire property. The Taguchi-based mix designs of HPCM, GPM, …

Equilibrium And Dynamic Surface Tension Behavior In Colloidal Unimolecular Polymers (Cup), Ashish Zore, Peng Geng, Michael R. Van De Mark
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Studies of the interfacial behavior of pure aqueous nanoparticles have been limited due tothe difficulty of making contaminant-free nanoparticles while also providing narrow size distribu-tion. Colloidal unimolecular polymers (CUPs) are a new type of single-chain nanoparticle with a particle size ranging from 3 to 9 nm, which can be produced free of surfactants and volatile organic contents (VOCs). CUP particles of different sizes and surface charges were made. The surface tension behavior of these CUP particles in water was studied using a maximum bubble pressure tensiometer. The equilibrium surface tension decreased with increasing concentration and the number of charges present …

Application Of Leeb Hardness Test In Prediction Of Dynamic Elastic Constants Of Sedimentary And Igneous Rocks, Sasan Ghorbani, Seyed Hadi Hoseinie, Ebrahim Ghasemi, Taghi Sherizadeh
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Leeb hardness test is a non-destructive and portable technique that can be used both in the laboratory and in-field applications. The main purpose of this study is to predict the dynamic elastic constants of the igneous and sedimentary rocks using Leeb dynamic hardness testing. For this purpose, three vital topics have been investigated and analyzed. First, the relationships between ultrasonic wave velocities and dynamic elastic constants with the Leeb hardness were investigated. Thereafter, by determining the rock quality index (IQ) using microscopic studies and by analyzing the quality index-porosity plot, the variation of the Leeb hardness values was studied. …

On Internal Resonance Analysis Of A Double-Cable-Stayed Shallow-Arch Model With Elastic Supports At Both Ends, Xiaoyang Su, Houjun Kang, Tieding Guo, Guirong Grace Yan
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In previous research on the nonlinear dynamics of cable-stayed bridges, boundary conditions were not properly modeled in the modeling. In order to obtain the nonlinear dynamics of cable-stayed bridges more accurately, a double-cable-stayed shallow-arch model with elastic supports at both ends and the initial configuration of bridge deck included in the modeling is developed in this study. The in-plane eigenvalue problems of the model are solved by dividing the shallow arch (SA) into three partitions according to the number of cables and the piecewise functions are taken as trial functions of the SA. Then, the in-plane one-to-one-to-one internal resonance among …

HCS+ ions have been detected in several regions of the interstellar medium (ISM), but an accurate determination of the chemical-physical conditions in the molecular clouds where this molecule is observed requires detailed knowledge of the collisional rate coefficients with the most common colliders in those environments. In this work, we study the dynamics of rotationally inelastic collisions of HCS+ + H2 at low temperature, and report, for the first time, a set of rate coefficients for this system. We used a recently developed potential energy surface for the HCS+-H2 van der Waals complex and …

Laser-assisted fabrication of conductive materials on flexible substrates has attracted intense interests because of its simplicity, easy customization, and broad applications. However, it remains challenging to achieve laser scribing of conductive materials on tissue-like soft elastomers, which can serve as the basis to construct bioelectronics and soft actuators. Here, we report laser scribing of metallic conductive, photoactive transition metal oxide (molybdenum dioxide) on soft elastomers, coated with molybdenum chloride precursors, under ambient conditions. Laser-scribed molybdenum dioxide (LSM) exhibits high electrical conductivity, biocompatibility, chemical stability, and compatibility with magnetic resonance imaging. In addition, LSM can be made on various substrates (polyimide, …

In this article, a novel training set optimization method in an artificial neural network (ANN) constructed for high bandwidth interconnects design is proposed based on rigorous probability analysis. In general, the accuracy of an ANN is enhanced by increasing training set size. However, generating large training sets is inevitably time-consuming and resource-demanding, and sometimes even impossible due to limited prototypes or measurement scenarios. Especially, when the number of channels in required design are huge such as graphics double data rate (GDDR) memory and high bandwidth memory (HBM). Therefore, optimizing the training set selection process is crucial to minimizing the training …

Alkali-activated mortar (AAM) is an emerging eco-friendly construction material, which can complement ordinary Portland cement (OPC) mortars. Prediction of properties of AAMs—albeit much needed to complement experiments—is difficult, owing to substantive batch-to-batch variations in physicochemical properties of their precursors (i.e., aluminosilicate and activator solution). In this study, a machine learning (ML) model is employed; and it is shown that the model—once trained and optimized—can reliably predict compressive strength of AAMs solely from their initial physicochemical attributes. Prediction performance of the model improves when multiple compositional descriptors of the aluminosilicate are combined into a singular, composite chemostructural descriptor (i.e., network ratio …

As an essential component in power applications, magnetic cores and their design play an important role in achieving high efficiency and high-power density. Accurate measurement of the core loss is important for inductor and power converter optimization. Loss measurement depends on exactly determining the phase angle between the voltage and the current. However, measurement errors can be introduced due to the discrepancies in propagation delays in the voltage and current sensors. In addition, the propagation delay is frequency-dependent but has a large influence in the MHz range and above. Previously, several methods have been proposed to compensate for this discrepancy, …

Inaccessible pore volume (IAPV) can have an important impact on the placement of gelant during in situ gel treatment for conformance control. Previously, IAPV was considered to be a constant factor in simulators, yet it lacked dynamic characterization. This paper proposes a numerical simulation model of IAPV. The model was derived based on the theoretical hydrodynamic model of gelant molecules. The model considers both static features, such as gelant and formation properties, and dynamic features, such as gelant rheology and retention. To validate our model, we collected IAPV from 64 experiments and the results showed that our model fit moderately …

Acoustic emission (AE) signals detected from corrosion test on a steel reinforced concrete beam subjected to the coupling effects of corrosive wet-dry cycles and static load are analyzed by power spectral density, wavelet transform, and Shannon entropy. The degradation process of the corroded reinforced concrete beam can be divided into four stages on the basis of the accumulated event number (AEN). Due to the difference of material properties, steel reinforcement and concrete matrix have distinguished AE features. The time-frequency characteristics of AE signals can reflect the microstructural degradation mechanism of steel corrosion and concrete cracking. The corrosion evaluation entails investigating …

The continuous increase in traffic volume demands performance enhancement of pavements. Common techniques for this performance improvement utilize modifications in the conventional hot mixture asphalt (HMA) through additives. Utilization of urban waste materials as additives for HMA provides opportunity for effective utilization and disposal of these unwanted materials. In this research, two waste materials, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and crumb rubber (CR), are tested as additives to HMA for performance enhancement, optimization, and cost effectiveness. Performance evaluations are made through comparing stiffness modulus. Stiffness moduli of conventional and waste-material-modified HMA mixtures are evaluated through creep testing. Further, the effect of asphalt …

Sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) have different compositions compared to conventional petroleum jet fuels, particularly in terms of fuel sulfur and hydrocarbon content. These differences may change the amount and physicochemical properties of volatile and non-volatile particulate matter (nvPM) emitted by aircraft engines. In this study, we evaluate whether comparable nvPM measurement techniques respond similarly to nvPM produced by three blends of SAFs compared to three conventional fuels. Multiple SAF blends and conventional (Jet A-1) jet fuels were combusted in a V2527-A5 engine, while an additional conventional fuel (JP-8) was combusted in a CFM56-2C1 engine. We evaluated nvPM mass concentration measured …

Cement has been a major consumable material for construction in the world since its invention, but its low flexural strength is the main defect affecting the service life of structures. To adapt cement-based materials to a more stringent environment, carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-COOH) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) are proposed to enhance the mechanical properties of cement paste. This study systematically verifies the synergistic effect of CNTs-COOH/PVA on the performance of cement paste. First, UV-Vis spectroscopy and FTIR spectroscopy prove that CNTs-COOH can provide attachment sites for PVA and PVA can improve the dispersion and stability of CNTs-COOH in water, which …

Grape disease is a significant contributory factor to the decline in grape yield, typically affecting the leaves first. Efficient identification of grape leaf diseases remains a critical unmet need. To mitigate background interference in grape leaf feature extraction and improve the ability to extract small disease spots, by combining the characteristic features of grape leaf diseases, we developed a novel method for disease recognition and classification in this study. First, Gaussian filters Sobel smooth de-noising Laplace operator (GSSL) was employed to reduce image noise and enhance the texture of grape leaves. A novel network designated coordinated attention shuffle mechanism-asymmetric multi-scale …
