The Determination Of The Fusing Point Of A Few Igneous And Metamorphic Rocks, Fred H. Perkins
The Determination Of The Fusing Point Of A Few Igneous And Metamorphic Rocks, Fred H. Perkins
Bachelors Theses
"There are two methods of arriving at the refractoriness of a rock. One is the physical, the other is the chemical. The physical methods attempt to determine it directly by subjecting it to heat, and the temperature obtained is registered by use of numerous methods, a type of each kind I will describe in this paper. The chemical methods attempt to arrive at the result by calculations based upon a chemical analysis, though one or more physical determinations have to be made as a basis for these calculations. As the former method is direct, my operations are based upon this …
Design Of A Mill For A Cyanide Plant, Charles A. Fach
Design Of A Mill For A Cyanide Plant, Charles A. Fach
Bachelors Theses
"Object. Designing a mill, which according to my ideas, would be the best in practice. The machinery used in practice at the present time, is mostly old style. In this work of mine I have substituted a great deal of lately invented machinery which would give much better and quicker results than the machinery now used. Many ideas have come to me while working on this subject which I think would assist me in any further work on the subject"--page 1.
The Mining & Construction Of A Smelter For The Production Of Zinc-White From Western Lead-Zinc Ores, Hector George Sylvester Anderson, V. B. Hinsch
The Mining & Construction Of A Smelter For The Production Of Zinc-White From Western Lead-Zinc Ores, Hector George Sylvester Anderson, V. B. Hinsch
Bachelors Theses
"On account of the high price of the old Dutch process of making white lead and the undesirability of sublimed white-lead as the bulk of the pigment, the use of zinc-white as an adulterant of the lead-white made by the old Dutch process is new extensively used by all paint manufacturers. The advantages of its use in conjunction with white-lead in the manufacture of white paints is the fact that it does not combine with sulphur as does white-lead itself. The specifications of the U. S. Light-house Dept. require 75% of zinc-oxide and 25% of white lead as a mixture. …

Influence Of Time And Temperature In The Roasting Of Sulphides, Roger Hanson Hatchett
Influence Of Time And Temperature In The Roasting Of Sulphides, Roger Hanson Hatchett
Bachelors Theses
"The original object of this work was to determine the relation between the quantities of oxide and sulphate formed in roasting a sulphide under known conditions of temperature, time and supply of air. But difficulties arose in constructing apparatus, which in the short time allotted could not be overcome. These are mentioned in description of apparatus, and were of such a nature that the relations between products and conditions are for the most part qualitative"--page 1.
Assay Of Copper Matte For Gold And Silver, Walter E. Soest
Assay Of Copper Matte For Gold And Silver, Walter E. Soest
Bachelors Theses
"Ores containing copper, and especially copper matte, have always been very annoying in assaying for the precious metals. In assaying copper matte, and ores containing much copper, by the usual method of scorification, the losses of silver an gold are considerable, owing to the fact that in order to obtain lead buttons, which are soft and free from copper, repeated scorifications are necessary, and moreover it is impossible to obtain lead buttons which are entirely free from copper"--page 1.
The Strength Of Cement Under Different Conditions, Francis Joseph Tayman
The Strength Of Cement Under Different Conditions, Francis Joseph Tayman
Bachelors Theses
"Derivation of some Empirical Formulae, showing relation between breaking strength, and various functions which enter into Cement testing. We find a great deal of experimental work done in Cement testing, also some curves plotted, but there are but few equations fitted to these curves, this, then, is the object of the present work. In this work a great many interesting points have been made manifest, most of them are of no practical value but merely of interest in themselves. The work has been on several of the most important ones, to be given subsequently. On these and a few others …

Pennsylvania Coal Fields, Arthur D. Terrell
Pennsylvania Coal Fields, Arthur D. Terrell
Bachelors Theses
"The use of mineral coal dates back before the Christian Era.
The mining of coal, however, is much more recent.
About the 18th century coal mining began to be scientifically executed.
The area of Anthracite coal fields in Penn. is not quite 500 square miles included in outcrop lines of its lowest beds"--page 1.

Design Of A Mining Plant, George C. Clark
Design Of A Mining Plant, George C. Clark
Bachelors Theses
"It is to be hoped that in the perusal of this short discussion, the idea will not be lost sight of that the work has been done by a novice - probably a needless caution as the fact is patent at every step. Again, while the work is supposed to be laid along practical lines, no attempt has been made to abbreviate and show merely what is absolutely necessary. As the subject is treated as a thesis and not as a proposition to contractors, the attempt has been made to show the method of arriving at conclusions, and when necessary …

Cement Testing, Arthur D. Terrell
Bachelors Theses
"For a Thesis in 1898 I did some work on cement testing with very satisfactory results, but I did but little more than get a few ideas as to how to conduct the experiments to best advantage. For the present year I have taken up the work for further investigation"--page 1.
The Manufacture Of Portland Cement, Herman C. Cowen
The Manufacture Of Portland Cement, Herman C. Cowen
Professional Degree Theses
"The principal characteristics which, in the process of manufacture, sharply and clearly distinguish Portland cement from Limes, Hydraulic Limes, and other Hydraulic cements, are the necessity for carefully proportioning and finely grinding the raw materials to insure a homogenous [sic] mixture, and the extremely high temperature at which it must be burned in order to insure a sound a trustworthy product"--page 1.

The Electrolysis Of The Water Of A Copper Sulphate Solution, Ralph Barker
The Electrolysis Of The Water Of A Copper Sulphate Solution, Ralph Barker
Bachelors Theses
"The idea prevails generally, that when an electric current is passed through a copper sulphate solution, the water will be electrolysed sic when the difference of potential between the electrodes reaches about one and one-half volts. The object of the experiments detailed below was to determine whether or not the density of the solution has any effect on the electrolysis of the water, and if any such existed, to find out if there was any relation between them"--page 1.
Derivation Of Some Empirical Formulae, Showing Relation Between Breaking Strength And Various Functions Which Enter Into Cement Testing, Arthur D. Terrell
Derivation Of Some Empirical Formulae, Showing Relation Between Breaking Strength And Various Functions Which Enter Into Cement Testing, Arthur D. Terrell
Bachelors Theses
"Although we find a great many results of experimental work in cement testing, and some curves plotted, there seems to have been very little attempt made toward fitting equations to these curves. This then leaves an opening for original investigation. During my experiments quite a variety of interesting points have been made manifest. Most of them are of no practical benefit, but merely of interest in themselves. My work has been on a few of the most important ones, which will be given subsequently"--page 1.

Hydraulic Separation, Albert Edwin Eardley, John Simpson Cameron
Hydraulic Separation, Albert Edwin Eardley, John Simpson Cameron
Bachelors Theses
"Before beginning a discussion of the various experiments performed with the hydraulic separators in the Laboratory of the S. of M., a brief statement as to the principle upon which their working depends, and their functions in the dressing of ores should be given. The crude ore when first delivered from the mine is usually not of sufficient richness to be economically handled by the smelters; it therefore becomes necessary to eliminate as far as possible that part of the ore which is of no material value, and among the various forms of apparatus now in use for this purpose …
Contact Plane Concentration, John A. Rogers, George Walter Dean
Contact Plane Concentration, John A. Rogers, George Walter Dean
Bachelors Theses
"Contact plane concentration depends upon the principle that a thin sheet or film of water flowing over a plane surface may be so adjusted that its quantity and velocity are just sufficient to bear away the lighter particles of gangue, leaving behind only the heavier particles of the mineral to be concentrated, adhering by friction to the plane, the concentrates being removed by any convenient method. Thus we see it is best adapted to the concentration of minerals having widely differing specific gravities but may be used for the concentration of all ores and minerals with any specific gravity whatsoever"--page …
Water Supply Of Rolla, Missouri, Perry B. Anderson, Felix John Kersting
Water Supply Of Rolla, Missouri, Perry B. Anderson, Felix John Kersting
Bachelors Theses
"An essential feature of a prospering town is a system of water supply, to protect property from losses by fire and to furnish water for domestic use. Rolla, a town of about fifteen hundred inhabitants, is without a proper water supply, in consequence of which it has suffered many losses to property, which could have been averted, or at least diminished, had the proper protection been at hand. At present the only fire protection the business part of town has, is derived from one large cistern placed on the principal street, while the protection for the residence portion, is derived …
