I. SCOPE OF THIS REPORT (a) Twenty tension tests were carried out on specimens cut from the steel of which those beams were fabricated for which tension tests are not inculded in the 27th Report. This completes the tension tests for the present series of beams. (b) A start was made in the final evaluation of the results of the beam tests. The part of the evaluation completed to date is included in this report.

"Early in 1940 a project was undertaken for a complete survey of the Meramec River Basin. This project, of which the pollution study was a part, was one of the most extensive surveys made of an entire river basin and included detailed studies of soil erosion, land, use, pollution, rainfall, and recreation in the Meramec Basin. The pollution study covered that portion of the Meramec River from its confluence with the Mississippi River to Steelville, a distance of about 140 river miles; the Big River from its mouth to a point west of Flat River, a distance of 107 river …

"The use of Missouri Super Duty Refractories in steel plant service is not new, although their use in blast furnace service has been limited chiefly to stove installations. They have, however, been used in a sufficient number of places where severe operating conditions exist, so that they are a definitely known quantity and they have consistently shown much longer service under conditions of high temperatures and contact with slag and molten iron. I. SCOPE OF THIS REPORT Tests were conducted on 18 beams, viz., 16-1 3/4-1,2,3; 18-1 1/2-1,2,3; 16-1 1/4-1,2,3; 14-1 1/2-1,2,3; 18-1-1,2,3; and 14-3/4-1,2,3. This report contains only the data of the tests. The evaluation of the test results will be carried out after the remainder of the beam tests and the tension tests have been completed.

"Symmetrical Trinitrotoluene is stable in the presence of moisture, but the nonsymmetrical trinitrotoluenes permit replacement of a nitro group with the formation of a nitrated cresol and nitrous acid. Nitrated cresols form salts similar to the picrates. To avoid these nonsymmetrical trinitrotoluenes the Ordinance Department, U. S. A., requires that Grade I trinitrotoluene have a solidification point of at least 80.2⁰C.². Numerous methods for purifying the crude trinitrotoluene and others for separating the nitrotoluenes have been suggested"--Introduction, page 1.

I. SCOPE OF THIS REPORT Tests were conducted on nine beams with unstiffened top flanges, viz., 14-2 1/4-1,2,3; 16-2 1/2-1,2,3; 16-3,1,2,3. Beam 14-2 1/4 - 2 was the first to be spot-welded in our shop. This beam warped badly in welding and, when tested, failed at a much lower load thant the other two beams of the same type, due to initial distortion. For this reason the results of this test were discarded and are not included in this report. Beams 18-2 1/2 according to our drawing were to be of 18 ga. metal. It turned out, however, that all …
