Solution Of Some Chemical Plant Problems Associated With The Manufacture Of Insecticides, Lawrence Ralph Hinken Jan 1954

Solution Of Some Chemical Plant Problems Associated With The Manufacture Of Insecticides, Lawrence Ralph Hinken

Professional Degree Theses

"This thesis describes the solutions of a variety of developmental, production, and general engineering problems encountered in a chemical plant. This plant produces resins, solvents, and insecticides. Most of the problems considered here are patented or are of a secret nature. These details are, in the main, satisfactory temperatures, molar ratios, times of reaction, and space-time data. Therefore, it is the purpose of this discussion to be general but, in the main, to give the outline of the thinking which derived these solutions. Some of these solutions were of minor economic value, some were vital to the success of the …

The Closure Of Thin Wall Pressure Vessels, Archie W. Culp Jr. Jan 1954

The Closure Of Thin Wall Pressure Vessels, Archie W. Culp Jr.

Masters Theses

"The object of this thesis is to find various methods of closing thin wall aluminum cylinders. Such a closure must be strong enough, that when internal pressure is applied, ultimate failure will occur along a longitudinal element of the cylinder and not at the closure. Moreover, such a method must not only be mechanically sound, but it must be readily adaptable to mass production"--Introduction.

A Study Of The Bonding By Air-Setting Refractory Mortar At Elevated Temperatures, Bhikhubhai Mahadeo Sedalia Jan 1954

A Study Of The Bonding By Air-Setting Refractory Mortar At Elevated Temperatures, Bhikhubhai Mahadeo Sedalia

Doctoral Dissertations

"The importance of a suitable material for the laying of bricks in furnace and kiln construction has been recognized by the refractory industry for a long time. It is necessary that a strong bond should develop between the bricks to impart strength to the entire construction work. A weak joint would form the weakest link and dangerously weaken the whole structure.

Such being the importance of the bond, the refractory industry has made quite an effort to develop jointing materials which would produce strong bonds. During the last two decades, due to intensive research and development work, many good bonding …

The Velocity Of Ultrasonics In Liquids, Mack A. Breazeale Jan 1954

The Velocity Of Ultrasonics In Liquids, Mack A. Breazeale

Masters Theses

"In acoustics the term ultrasonics is used to refer to those frequencies which are above the range of human hearing; that is, frequencies above approximately 20,000 cycles per second. Since the laws of sound which are valid for the audible range are also valid in the ultrasonic range and since the wave length of ultrasonics is much shorter than that of audible sound, ultrasonic has proved very valuable in the calculation of both the velocity and the absorption coefficient of sound in various media. This is especially notable in the case of liquids, where the velocity of sound is much …

A Fundamental Study Of Clay Drying Using Ware Of Large Cross Section, Robert F. Grady Iii Jan 1954

A Fundamental Study Of Clay Drying Using Ware Of Large Cross Section, Robert F. Grady Iii

Masters Theses

"The drying of clay has been studied extensively in the past by many investigators, some of whom attempted to relate this information to the structure of clay and thereby develop a more vivid picture, while others studied the mechanism of drying in its own right in order to present a useable theory that would allow improvements in the drying operation.

At present the literature is unable to present a theory of the mechanism of drying that is sufficiently general to cover the observed aspects of clay drying. Many and varied mechanisms are presented, but correlation is seldom completely evident between …

An Investigation Of Continuous Steel Beams In The Plastic Range, Robert Adams Shoolbred Jan 1954

An Investigation Of Continuous Steel Beams In The Plastic Range, Robert Adams Shoolbred

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the action of beams in the plastic range. The test specimen will be a 4WF 13 structural shape continuous over three supports having equal span lengths of seven feet. Three types of loading were chosen. The first loading will be concentrated in the center of each span. The second loading will be a concentrated load in the center of one span only. The third loading will be the settlement of the two end supports until a plastic hinge forms at the center support, then the two spans will be loaded with concentrated …

Horizontal Pressures On Retaining Walls Due To Line Surface Loads, John B. Heagler Jan 1954

Horizontal Pressures On Retaining Walls Due To Line Surface Loads, John B. Heagler

Masters Theses

"Among the oldest types of structures with which engineers have had to deal are those which serve to laterally restrain masses of earth, or to prevent earth embankments from assuming their natural angle of repose. This is necessary where space is limited or the natural slope would encroach upon other property. These structures, usually called retaining walls, are subjected to forces, both lateral and vertical due to the pressures exerted by the backfill material and any loads imposed on the backfill material. The first step in the design of the retaining wall is to determine the magnitude, position, and line …

Testing Of Missouri Shales For Light Weight Aggregate Production, Jerry D. Plunkett Jan 1954

Testing Of Missouri Shales For Light Weight Aggregate Production, Jerry D. Plunkett

Masters Theses

"The original objective of this investigation was to determine by testing those clays, shales, and loesses occuring in Missouri in large deposits (over 15 feet in thickness with little overburden), which would be suitable for the production of light weight aggregate. The second objective was to investigate the mechanism of bloating as related to the physical and chemical properties of the above materials, and by using these relationships cause clays which do not naturally bloat, to bloat using some addition. The use of additives would permit the economical use of material closer to the market in many instances.

After the …

Deposition Of Metallic Coatings From Fused Salt Baths, Andrew Hessler Larson Jan 1954

Deposition Of Metallic Coatings From Fused Salt Baths, Andrew Hessler Larson

Masters Theses

"This thesis is the result of an investigation undertaken to study some of the important factors affecting the deposition of metallic diffusion coatings on other metals immersed in a fused salt bath….

There are many methods which have been devised to obtain diffusion coatings on various metals. One which is quite well known and used commercially is the process of “chromizing” which produces a diffusion layer if chromium on another metal. One method of “chromizing” consists of immersing the specimen to be coated in a mixed chloride fused bath containing chromium metal flakes. Another method consists of packing a low …

Effect Of Carbon Content In Steels Upon The Deposition Of Titanium From A Fused Salt Bath, Reinhard Paul Abendroth Jan 1954

Effect Of Carbon Content In Steels Upon The Deposition Of Titanium From A Fused Salt Bath, Reinhard Paul Abendroth

Masters Theses

"STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Previous work done at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy on the deposition of titanium upon various metals, especially iron and steel, bas shown that titanium can be deposited upon ingot iron and. low carbon steels with comparitive ease. Difficulty was encountered in attempts to deposit titanium upon steels of higher carbon content and upon cast irons.

For this reason, it was decided to investigate more thoroughly the relationship between the carbon content of various steels and the quality of titanium coatings deposited on these steels. Once this relationship had been established, a suitable theoretical explanation …

Corrosion Products Of Titanium In Fused Salt Baths, Kai-Chai Chiou Jan 1954

Corrosion Products Of Titanium In Fused Salt Baths, Kai-Chai Chiou

Masters Theses

"Titanium is gaining great interest in the modern metal industry because of its natural abundance and its desirable physical and chemical properties. Among them, its excellent corrosion resistance, such as the resistance to normal atmosphere attack, humid and saline atmosphere attack, sea water attack, and nitric acid attack, is the most prominent characteristic being welcomed by the engineers. The usefulness of titanium would be greatly increased if it were possible to plate titanium on other metals, thus increasing the corrosion resistance of these other metals.

Much concern, at present, has been given to the possibilities of the electrodeposition of titanium …

Coloration Of Glass By High Energy Radiation, Thomas L. Nickens Jan 1954

Coloration Of Glass By High Energy Radiation, Thomas L. Nickens

Masters Theses

"Purpose of Investigation: One of the objects of this investigation is to determine the amount of CeO2 required to prevent the discoloration of glass when exposed to gamma radiation. By discoloration, it is meant that there has been a change in the absorption bands of visible light. Another objective is an attempt to prevent the coloration by the introduction of two oxides not previously used. Finally, a theory is presented which could explain why glass containing CeO2 does not change color upon irradiation by gamma rays"--Introduction, page 1.

An Investigation Of The Characteristics Of High Alumina Refractory Castables, Gajendra Nath Mohanty Jan 1954

An Investigation Of The Characteristics Of High Alumina Refractory Castables, Gajendra Nath Mohanty

Doctoral Dissertations

"Refractory castables or concretes, a comparatively new member of the refractories family, are an admixture of highly aluminous cements and graded refractory aggregates, blended in predetermined proportions very much like structural concrete. The refractory aggregates must contain a large amount of fines contrary to the requirements of ordinary concrete. Unlike the Portland cements, which are mainly combinations of calcium silicates, the highly aluminous cements are predominantly calcium aluminates. They are comparatively of a refractory natures, having the hydraulic setting property combined also with high early strength. The discovery of the fact that these refractory concretes could be cast, in situ, …

The Rate Of Dissolution Of Aluminum In Hydrofluoric Acid, Yen-Ngen Wang Jan 1954

The Rate Of Dissolution Of Aluminum In Hydrofluoric Acid, Yen-Ngen Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Pure aluminum has a relatively low strength, and its use is, therefore, rather limited. However, the resistance of pure aluminum to the attack of acids and many neutral solutions is higher than that of less pure aluminum or most of the aluminum-base alloys. For this reason, alclad alloy sheets, are made with a coating of pure aluminum on one or both sides of an aluminum alloy core. The coating is metallurgically bonded to the core over the entire area of contact. Thus the coating electrochemically protects the core from corrosive attack.

Aluminum is more negative in the electrochemical series than …

Hydrogen Overvoltage On Titanium, Sheng-Tai Shih Jan 1954

Hydrogen Overvoltage On Titanium, Sheng-Tai Shih

Doctoral Dissertations

"The hydrogen overvoltage has been defined as the difference between the potential of the working electrode (cathode) and the theoretical reversible value for the same solution. This definition brings out the difficulty involved in the measurement of the "theoretical reversible potential for the same solution” as the potential of the hydrogen electrode in such a solution is usually different from the value of a standard reversible hydrogen electrode, for which the activity of hydrogen ions is set as being “1” and the potential arbitrarily set as being “0”. Besides, it is sometimes necessary to add addition agents to the solution …

A Study Of The Deformation Texture And Its Variation In Cold Drawn Nickel Rods, Krishan Kumar Tangri Jan 1954

A Study Of The Deformation Texture And Its Variation In Cold Drawn Nickel Rods, Krishan Kumar Tangri

Doctoral Dissertations

"The production of rods by cold drawing is a development of recent years as compared to other methods of fabrication. Though a good many investigations correlating the observed mechanical properties to the mill practices employed have been reported, the results nevertheless are more of a qualitative and empirical nature. It is well known that the physical properties of a metal product are related to its deformation textures which are characteristic of the metal and the fabricating method used. Thus a study of the deformation textures of cold-drawn rods, specially by x-ray diffraction techniques should provide a much more precise and …

Carbon Monoxide Attack Of Refractories, William A. Frad Jan 1954

Carbon Monoxide Attack Of Refractories, William A. Frad

Doctoral Dissertations

"The disintegration and failure of fire clay refractories due to the action of carbon monoxide has been studied tor a period at about fifty years. The most important application is in blast furnace refractories. Similar failures due to carbon deposition, involving other gases such as methane, have been noted and less extensively studied. Failures due to the action of gases other than carbon monoxide are beyond the scope of this thesis. Occasional attempts to find some agent to prevent disintegration have been mentioned in the literature. In this study the number of such substances and the results of their action …

A Model For X-Ray Scattering From A Free-Volume Liquid, Charles A. Hewett Jan 1954

A Model For X-Ray Scattering From A Free-Volume Liquid, Charles A. Hewett

Masters Theses

"Investigation of the diffraction of x-rays by liquids was begun soon after the well-known work of Friedrich, Knipping, and Laue proved to be of value in supplying information as to the arrangement of atoms in crystalline matter. Friedrich in 1913 reported x-ray diffraction patterns of Canadian Balsam, paraffin, and amber; three years later Debye and Scherrer, in their work on benzene, (among other liquids investigated) showed that the diffraction phenomenon exhibited was one of interference. Still later, in 1922, Keesom and de Smedt reported similar investigations carried out on argon, nitrogen, and oxygen in the liquid state, the results of …

Geology Of The South Half Of The Meramec Spring Quadrangle, Missouri, Howard Joseph Yorston Jan 1954

Geology Of The South Half Of The Meramec Spring Quadrangle, Missouri, Howard Joseph Yorston

Masters Theses

"This report is a continuation of the work initiated by Mueller in his mapping of the north half of the Meramec Spring Quadrangle. The completion of this work provides not only a geologic map of the whole quadrangle but also completes the mapping of the geology of a strip of quadrangles extending from Rolla to the Mississippi River. In addition to being a step closer to the goal of complete geologic coverage for the state, this work will be of value to those concerned with the prediction of depths of wells drilled in search for water, which in view of …
