Dielectric Properties Of Solid Solutions Of Bifeo₃ With Pb(Ti, Zr)O₃ At High Temperature And High Frequency, Robert Travis Smith, Gary D. Achenbach, Robert Gerson, William Joseph James

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Solid solutions of BiFeO3 with PbTiO3, PbTi0.5Zr0.5O3, and PbZrO3 were prepared. The crystallographic data on these solutions, which are basically perovskitic, are given. The dielectric constants of the materials were determined at a frequency of 0.53 GHz and at temperatures up to 800°C. Dielectric Curie points were found in solutions containing up to 90 mole % BiFeO3. These results leave little doubt that BiFeO3 is ferroelectric or antiferroelectric. The extrapolated Curie point for BiFeO3 is above 850°C. BiFeO3 appears more likely to be ferroelectric than …

Transport Of ⁸⁵Sr And ¹³⁷Cs Under Induced Clay Suspensions, Purush Terkonda Jan 1968

Transport Of ⁸⁵Sr And ¹³⁷Cs Under Induced Clay Suspensions, Purush Terkonda

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

“The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of induced clay suspensions on the transport of 85Sr and 137Cs in an aqueous environment.

An instrumented flume was used as a model river to simulate an environment typical of a slow-moving, unpolluted, turbid stream. Modified longitudinal dispersion relationships were used to describe the transport of radionuclides in turbid streams. Data were derived from instantaneous release of 85Sr and 137Cs with suspended Attapulgite and Kaolinite clays. Continuous release of 137Cs with an Attapulgite clay suspension helped to establish uptake and transport characteristics for one environmental …

Cell Model Of A Fluid. I. Evaluation Of The Partition Function And Series Expansions, Ralph G. Tross, Louis H. Lund Jan 1968

Cell Model Of A Fluid. I. Evaluation Of The Partition Function And Series Expansions, Ralph G. Tross, Louis H. Lund

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The partition function of a one-dimensional system of particles with all interactions active is formulated in terms of Ising ferromagnetic spin states. It is shown how the partition function for two- and three-dimensional systems can be obtained from the one-dimensional one by restricting the number of bonds per particle. After writing the partition function in matrix form, the operator of interest is diagonalized and its trace expressed in the form of a convenient infinite series. The series is shown to be absolutely convergent and its analytic properties are briefly investigated. It is then applied to one-, two-, and three-dimensional systems …

The Bethe-Weizsäcker Mass Formula And Lennard-Jones N-N Potentials, James Paul Wesley, Alex E.S. Green Jan 1968

The Bethe-Weizsäcker Mass Formula And Lennard-Jones N-N Potentials, James Paul Wesley, Alex E.S. Green

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

An elementary derivation of the Bethe-Weizscker semiempirical nuclear mass formula which is in the spirit of current views of nuclear structure, is given. Lennard-Jones potentials are assumed to act between nuclear. Thus, the major interaction between nn, pp, and np pairs is taken of the form —g/r3+h/r4, where r is the separation distance between nuclear, and g and h are constants. An additional "symmetry" interaction of the form s/r3 is assumed for np pairs. Summing the potential energy over all nucleon pairs and using the Fermi statistical estimate of the kinetic energy, the Bethe-Weizscker semiempirical mass formula is obtained directly. …

A Direct Method Of Measuring Stray Load Loss In Dc Machines, Kanaiyalal R. Shah, George Mcpherson Jan 1968

A Direct Method Of Measuring Stray Load Loss In Dc Machines, Kanaiyalal R. Shah, George Mcpherson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Stray load loss in dc machines is denned as the difference between the actual loss under load and the well-recognized loss. This paper describes a simple, reliable, and direct method of measuring this loss by means of a proposed short-circuit test with a correction factor for uncompensated-type dc machines. It also describes the sources and components of stray load losses as they occur under short-circuit test. Copyright © 1968 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Waveform Distortion Caused By A Plasma Sheath, James R. Carl Jan 1968

Waveform Distortion Caused By A Plasma Sheath, James R. Carl

Masters Theses

"A short burst of electromagnetic energy that propagates into and through a plasma medium can react with the plasma medium in several different ways depending on both the characteristics of the plasma and of the pulse. This thesis derives approximations for the plasma transfer function at low pressure (high altitude) and at high pressure (low altitude). The mechanisms that can change the shape of a waveform, in general, are dispersion and breakdown. dispersive distortion at low altitude is shown to exist for electron concentrations well above the resonant concentration for plasma sheaths that are thin compared to one wavelength. Several …

Sulfide Mineralogy And Fabrics Of The Iron Ores At Benson Mines, New York, Pedro Hugo TumialáN De La Cruz

Masters Theses

"The occurrence of sulfide minerals and their textural relationships to the silicate and oxide minerals in the Benson Mines, New York, iron deposit were investigated by ore microscopic and petrographic means. The Benson deposit is one in which the dominant iron oxides, magnetite and hematite, occur in a quartz-feldspar gneiss which was subjected to hornblende granulite subfacies metamorphism. Two hundred ore and country rock specimens were systematically collected from all parts of the open pit mine. Polished sections and thin sections were prepared from nearly all of the collected specimens. The oxide ore exhibits a granular texture in which isolated …

Influence Of Continuous Precipitation Upon The Growth Kinetics Of The Cellular Reaction In An Al-Ag Alloy, H. I. Aaronson, J. B. Clark Jan 1968

Influence Of Continuous Precipitation Upon The Growth Kinetics Of The Cellular Reaction In An Al-Ag Alloy, H. I. Aaronson, J. B. Clark

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The influence of the prior formation of a continuous precipitate upon the growth kinetics of the cellular reaction has been evaluated in an Al-17.9 wt. % Ag alloy. The continuous precipitate, in the form of intragranular plates of the γ′ transition phase, was shown to have reduced the upper bound of the driving force for the cellular reaction from the silver content of the untransformed alloy to that corresponding to the coherent solvus. When this reduction (≥ 98 %) is taken into account, the growth of cells is found to be controlled by cell boundary rather than by volume diffusion …

Age Hardening In A Mg-9 Wt.% Al Alloy, J. Beverley Clark Jan 1968

Age Hardening In A Mg-9 Wt.% Al Alloy, J. Beverley Clark

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The precipitation process and age hardening mechanism in a Mg-9 wt.% Al alloy were studied principally by transmission electron microscopy. This alloy age hardens by the general precipitation of plates of the equilibrium Mg17Al12 phase on the basal plane of the magnesium solid solution matrix. No evidence for the formation of either G.P. zones or a transition lattice of the Mg17Al12 precipitate was obtained. Cellular precipitation occurs competitively with the general precipitation at nearly all age hardening temperatures. In the solution treated condition, basal slip and {101̄2} twins are the principal deformation modes. Precipitation …

Cell Model Of A Fluid. Ii. Thermodynamic Properties Of The System, Ralph G. Tross, Louis H. Lund Jan 1968

Cell Model Of A Fluid. Ii. Thermodynamic Properties Of The System, Ralph G. Tross, Louis H. Lund

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In Paper I of this series (preceding paper) the model was formulated mathematically, and the solution derived in the form of an infinite series. The convergence and analyticity of the solution were investigated. It was then applied to one-, two-, and three-dimensional systems with nearest-neighbor interactions, and low-temperature series for these systems were obtained. In the present article the thermodynamics of the model are investigated. The series solution of the partition function derived in Paper I is applied to systems with interaction potentials of increasing complexity. The validity of the model is established by showing that in the appropriate limits …

A Simple Design Algorithm For Synthesis Of Multilevel Combinational Networks, James H. Tracey Jan 1968

A Simple Design Algorithm For Synthesis Of Multilevel Combinational Networks, James H. Tracey

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An algorithm is presented for the synthesis of combinational networks with a constrained arrangement of ANDS, ORS, NANDS, NORS, and inverters. The algorithm is easily presented to students in an introductory logic design course and has considerable application in modern practical logic design. Many texts available for a first course in logic design give very limited practical guidance for synthesis of networks under constraints outlined here. It is suggested that the algorithm presented here be furnished as supplementary material in the introductory course. Copyright © 1968 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Radiation And Annealing Characteristics Of Neutron Bombarded Silicon Transistors, L. S. Su, G. E. Gassner, C. A. Goben Jan 1968

Radiation And Annealing Characteristics Of Neutron Bombarded Silicon Transistors, L. S. Su, G. E. Gassner, C. A. Goben

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Operating a silicon planar epitaxial transistor in the inverse configuration allows one to demonstrate clearly the importance of the neutron-induced base current component and its degradation of the emitter efficiency, and, because of the much larger depletion layer, to compute a volume dependent damage constant applicable to all silicon p-n junctions. The importance of minimizing the absolute change versus relative change in radiation hardening studies is clearly illustrated. Surface effects were found to be significant for transistors mounted in gas-filled cans. The diffusion potential was predicted, on theoretical grounds, to vary with neutron fluence, and the theory was experimentally confirmed. …

Neutron Radiation Damage In Silicon Transistors, C. A. Goben, F. M. Smits, J. L. Wirth Jan 1968

Neutron Radiation Damage In Silicon Transistors, C. A. Goben, F. M. Smits, J. L. Wirth

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the investigation of base and collector current as a function of the emitter-to-base voltage, previous studies have shown that neutron-induced base current has components originating in the emitter space charge region as well as the neutral base region. This study shows that while the low injection level neutron-induced base current is dominated by the space charge component, the high injection behavior appears to be controlled by recombination in the neutral base region. Additional experiments performed in special tetrode transistors and van der Pauw-type samples indicate that changes in collector current are dominated by recombination in the neutral base, while …

Recombination Statistics For Neutron Bombarded Silicon Transistors, M. C. Chow, J. L. Azarewiczt, C. A. Goben Jan 1968

Recombination Statistics For Neutron Bombarded Silicon Transistors, M. C. Chow, J. L. Azarewiczt, C. A. Goben

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a recombination statistical model for the neutron-induced base current component reported previously. The derivation was based on the following: 1) the current equation for the induced current component developed previously; 2) the Shockley-Read-Hall statistics for holes and electrons; and 3) the recombination statistics derived by Sah, Noyce and Shockley for sites in the bulk space-charge region. The recombination statistics model depends on the diffusion potential, the junction voltage, the activation energy, temperature, and the ratio of capture cross-sections for holes and electrons. The utility of such a recombination statistical model is illustrated by using measured parameters to …

Drag Reduction In Hydrocarbon Soap Solutions, Ian Radin Jan 1968

Drag Reduction In Hydrocarbon Soap Solutions, Ian Radin

Masters Theses

"Turbulent flow pressure drop measurements were made for solutions of aluminum dioleate (soap) in toluene at concentrations of 0.2, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 per cent. Tube diameters ranged in size from 0.01 to 2.0 inches. The results of these measurements differed from those observed in aqueous systems. Higher concentrations (at least 0.75 per cent) were required before drag reduction was observed. Although fresh solutions were somewhat sensitive to shearing, once a solution was over about two weeks old it showed little further mechanical degradation. Although in the toluene solutions, wall shear stresses were reached which were over an order of …

A Study Of Succinic Dehydrogenase, Indole Acetic Acid Oxidase, Nitrate Reductase And Cytochrome C Reductase In Hygrophorus Conicus, Jagdish M. Mehta

Doctoral Dissertations

"The activity of the enzyme succinic dehydrogenase (succinate : phenazine methosulfate oxidoreductase, EC 1.3.99.1) of Hygrophorus conicus, a member of a class of fungi known as basidiomycetes, was found to be stimulated by nitrate. Two substances were tested as electron acceptors in the measurement of succinic dehydrogenase activity. Of the two substances tried, phenazine methosulfate and brilliant cresyl blue, the former was found to be the best. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD⁺) was a necessary cofactor for the enzyme and could be readily dissociated from the enzyme. The enzyme has the properties of a high molecular weight nucleo- or lipoprotein.

The Damage Assessment Of Thermally Shocked High Density, High Purity Aluminum Oxide, John H. Ainsworth Jan 1968

The Damage Assessment Of Thermally Shocked High Density, High Purity Aluminum Oxide, John H. Ainsworth

Doctoral Dissertations

"The traditional approach to thermal shock testing in brittle materials has been to determine the temperature difference required to nucleate cracks in these materials. Recent work has indicated that the degree of damage after crack nucleation should be an additional consideration. The degree of damage resulting from cooling thermal shocks has been the primary consideration of the present work. Test specimens of two geometries: long, solid rods and short, solid cylinders were quenched from selected temperatures into ice water. The degree of damage was determined through strength measurements and sonic damping analysis. Initial damage occurred at a temperature difference above …

Signal Theoretic Characterization Of A Function Using Positive Exponential Basis Functions, James Julius Baremore Jan 1968

Signal Theoretic Characterization Of A Function Using Positive Exponential Basis Functions, James Julius Baremore

Doctoral Dissertations

"A signal theory characterization of a time function or signal is a representation of the function throughout a sample interval by an orthogonal basis function expansion. The characterization described here obtains the coefficients in the expansion by processing the input waveform, in real time, through a system of three terminal passive RC filters. The outputs of the filters are sampled periodically and the coefficients of the basis function expansion in that interval are related to these values. The basis functions result from an exponential transformation applied to the Legendre polynomials and are orthogonal in time over the sample interval. The …

Nonparametric Sequential Detection, James Charles Fowler Jan 1968

Nonparametric Sequential Detection, James Charles Fowler

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation extends the theory of the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U statistic so that this statistic can be used to perform sequential tests on hypotheses. This sequential test procedure makes use of a sequential ranking procedure similar to the one first introduced by Parent. The operating-characteristic function and average number of samples function for this new test are calculated as a function of the signal to noise ratio. The test is then shown to be efficient for several forms of alternatives with an efficiency of 95% against the Wald Sequential Probability Ratio Test for a constant signal in normal noise. Finally, the …

The Lifetime And Effective Quenching Cross Section Of The 6²P₃/₂ State Of Thallium, Robert Charles Pickett Jan 1968

The Lifetime And Effective Quenching Cross Section Of The 6²P₃/₂ State Of Thallium, Robert Charles Pickett

Doctoral Dissertations

"The measurement of the lifetime of the metastable 6²P₃/₂ state of thallium is discussed. Measurement of time varying optical absorption by time sampling techniques is explained for the study of the decay of the metastable atom concentration following a pulsed radio frequency discharge. The decay of the thallium radiation from optically allowed states terminating on the metastable state is measured at nine different thallium densities in the afterglow of the discharge. This radiation repopulates the metastable state and is displayed on an oscilloscope. The metastable lifetime is measured as a function of the thallium density at three different r-f power …

Hrva - A Velocity Analysis Technique For Seismic Data, John Charles Robinson Jan 1968

Hrva - A Velocity Analysis Technique For Seismic Data, John Charles Robinson

Doctoral Dissertations

"A High-Resolution Velocity Analysis (HRVA) has been developed for the determination of the root-mean-square subsurface-velocity energy spectrum from gated seismic data which has been normal-moveout corrected. All calculations are performed in the frequency-space or frequency-wavenumber domain; seismic gates are transformed from the time-space domain via the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. HRVA is not restricted to the investigation of apparent horizontal velocities which have associated stepout values that are integral multiples of the time sampling interval, as are the existing correlation techniques. The technique liberally exploits the inexistence of significant energy in the higher frequency harmonies of seismic data, resulting in …

Zap - A Computer Program To Predict Fission Product Concentrations As A Function Of Neutron Flux, Irradiation And Cooling Times, Bruce Earl Koopmann Jan 1968

Zap - A Computer Program To Predict Fission Product Concentrations As A Function Of Neutron Flux, Irradiation And Cooling Times, Bruce Earl Koopmann

Masters Theses

"The development of a computer code was undertaken to calculate the fission product nuclide concentration for spent fuel discharged from a nuclear reactor, as a function of irradiation time, cooling time, neutron flux, and element cross section. The necessary input data was prepared from the basic nuclear data for fission of uranium-235 and plutonium-239. Calculations are also made for total or selective element beta heating and total gamma flux according to user selected input groups. These calculations would be useful in fuel element shielding, cooling, shipping and processing studies"--Abstract, page ii.

A Fluidic Liquid Level Control System, Vinod Kumar Verma Jan 1968

A Fluidic Liquid Level Control System, Vinod Kumar Verma

Masters Theses

"The prime objective of this investigation was to design and construct a working "Fluidic liquid level control system", and to make a functional study of the characteristics of the devices employed therein. A working model of a "fluidic liquid level control system" is developed and experimental data is collected to describe the functional characteristics of the fluidic circuits employed. The system contains a pressure sensitive, variable frequency oscillator; appropriate demodulation stages to convert the variable frequency alternating signal into a varying non-alternating signal; and on-off control elements in the final stages"--Abstract, page ii.

A Study Of Solvent Effects On The Reaction Between P-Nitrobenzyl Chloride And Hydroxide Ion In Aqueous Dioxane Homogeneous Media, Ken K. Ho Jan 1968

A Study Of Solvent Effects On The Reaction Between P-Nitrobenzyl Chloride And Hydroxide Ion In Aqueous Dioxane Homogeneous Media, Ken K. Ho

Masters Theses

"The kinetics and activation parameters of the reaction between p̲, p̲' - dinitrostilbene quantitatively, have been studied in five aqueous dioxane solvent systems at five different temperatures between 20⁰ and 40⁰C. At any one temperature the second-order rate constants are minimum in the 30% dioxane solvent mixture, reach a maximum in the 50% dioxane systems, and fall off slightly in the 60% and 70% dioxane systems. The Arrhenius activation energies are highest in the 30% dioxane and lowest in the 70% dioxane systems. The free energies of activation change in the same direction but the magnitude of change is much …
