Investigation Of Target Detection In Noncoherent Systems With Colored Noise, Edward Windsor Bailey Jan 1969

Investigation Of Target Detection In Noncoherent Systems With Colored Noise, Edward Windsor Bailey

Masters Theses

"Design efforts concerning the problem of detecting moving ground targets from an airborne platform with a noncoherent radar have been concentrated in the area of video filter design. The filter formulation generally follows an empirical path with no generally acceptable criterion for an optimum processor. This Thesis considers several problem formulations which are based on a Neyman-Pearson detection criteria. A square-law second detector is assumed and the resulting likelihood ratio shown to be too complex for closed form solution. The problem is reformulated in terms of sequences using complex random variable representations and the likelihood ratio is investigated. A test …

The Electrodeposition Of Zinc; Changes In Current Efficiency And Surface Structure Resulting From Various Addition Agents, Haruhisa Fukubayashi Jan 1969

The Electrodeposition Of Zinc; Changes In Current Efficiency And Surface Structure Resulting From Various Addition Agents, Haruhisa Fukubayashi

Masters Theses

"An examination of the surface structure of zinc electrodeposited from an acid-sulfate solution was made by scanning electron microscopy techniques. The current efficiencies were also determined, to a lesser extent, in order to correlate the results with the surface structures. Commercial and pure zinc oxide were used to prepare the neutral zinc sulfate solutions. The starting solutions were in a range of acid and zinc concentrations commonly used in commercial practice. Changes in morphology resulting from addition agents such as animal glue, gum arabic, and sodium silicate are compared"--Abstract, page ii.

Failure Analysis Of Binary Address Decoders, Kanaiyalal Jekisondas Gandhi Jan 1969

Failure Analysis Of Binary Address Decoders, Kanaiyalal Jekisondas Gandhi

Masters Theses

"This paper describes the organization and failure analysis of various types of binary address decoders. Logical type faults are considered and all possible faulty output patterns, resulting from these faults, are derived. A basic theory is developed, showing that these failure patterns are independent of the decoder size and organization. Digital simulation programs were used as an aid in the development of this theory. Results of the simulation are provided in the appendix"--Abstract, page ii.

Laboratory Measurement Of Pore Water Pressure Induced By A Model Friction Pile, Charles Alfred Miller Jan 1969

Laboratory Measurement Of Pore Water Pressure Induced By A Model Friction Pile, Charles Alfred Miller

Masters Theses

"This research program has been undertaken to develop a laboratory testing procedure for the measurement of pore water pressure induced by the static loading of a model friction pile. Most of the investigation involved the design, construction, and testing of equipment to be used during the tests which would produce satisfactory and reliable results. It was also desired to simulate field conditions during the tests. A series of tests were performed varying the consolidation pressure on the soil around the model pile. The effects of changing the location of the pore pressure measurements was also investigated. Results of the tests …

Fault Diagnosis Of Sequential Circuits, Virgil Willis Hughes Jan 1969

Fault Diagnosis Of Sequential Circuits, Virgil Willis Hughes

Masters Theses

"Compared to the problem of combinational network (CN) diagnosis, that of sequential network (SN) diagnosis has been an extremely difficult one. Present techniques of SN diagnosis are difficult to apply, and generally lead to lengthy test schedules or additional logic. This paper presents a new approach to the SN diagnostic problem which results in a substantially simpler technique than those found in the literature. The approach is to modify the SN so that it can be diagnosed from a combinatoric point of view. This is accomplished by the addition of outputs for testing purposes to certain lines in the circuit--no …

Effect Of Hydrostatic Pressure On Anelastic Stress Relaxation In A Mixed-Alkali Silicate Glass, Young-Gil (Gilbert Y.) Kim Jan 1969

Effect Of Hydrostatic Pressure On Anelastic Stress Relaxation In A Mixed-Alkali Silicate Glass, Young-Gil (Gilbert Y.) Kim

Masters Theses

"The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the anelastic stress relaxation of a mixed-alkali silicate glass (0.05 Na₂O, 0.95 K₂O, 3 SiO₂) was studied at 75°C between ambient pressure and 6 kbar. The activation volume of diffusion was found to be - 4.2 cm³/mole. It is proposed that a reequilibration of the defect population at pressure gives rise to the negative activation volume of diffusion"--Abstract, page ii.

Anodic Oxidation Of Pure And D.S. (Dispersion Hardened) Lead In Sulfuric Acid Solutions, Rafael San Martin Aldazabal Jan 1969

Anodic Oxidation Of Pure And D.S. (Dispersion Hardened) Lead In Sulfuric Acid Solutions, Rafael San Martin Aldazabal

Masters Theses

"The anodic oxidation of pure and dispersion hardened lead in 1 N H₂SO₄ was studied potentiostatically in the range - 0.28 to 2.0 volts (SHE). The anode surfaces were observed at various stages on a scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffraction techniques were used to determine the phases present. It was established that by oxidation up to 0.25 v only PbSO₄ is obtained. At potentials between 0.25 and 1.57 v, PbO (tetragonal) is formed beneath the lead sulfate layer. At potentials above 1.57 up to 2.0 v, a layer of ßPbO₂ forms in the outermost part of the anode underlying …

Statistical Inferences For The Cauchy Distribution Based On Maximum Likelihood Estimators, Gerald Nicholas Haas Jan 1969

Statistical Inferences For The Cauchy Distribution Based On Maximum Likelihood Estimators, Gerald Nicholas Haas

Doctoral Dissertations

"Various estimators of the location and scale parameters in the Cauchy distribution are investigated, and the superiority of the maximum likelihood estimators is established. Tables based on maximum likelihood estimators are presented for use in making statistical inferences for the Cauchy distribution. Those areas considered include confidence intervals, tests of hypothesis, power of the tests, and tolerance intervals. Both one- and two-sample problems are considered. Tables for testing the hypothesis of whether a sample came from a normal distribution or a Cauchy distribution are presented. The problems encountered in finding maximum likelihood estimators for the Cauchy parameters are discussed, and …

Turbulence Measurements In Drag Reducing Flow, Jorge Mario Rodriguez Jan 1969

Turbulence Measurements In Drag Reducing Flow, Jorge Mario Rodriguez

Doctoral Dissertations

"Studies of the frequency response of hot-film wedge probes in viscoelastic fluids established their reliability as measuring devices and demonstrated that the objections raised by Metzner and Astarita (77) are not valid for wedge probes. The structure of turbulence in drag reducing soap and polymer solutions was studied using a hot-film wedge probe. Intensity of turbulence measurements in drag reducing fluids indicate that the structure of trubulence is strongly dependent on the condition of the solution. Rates of energy dissipation calculated at the center of the tube indicate that there is an increase in the rate of energy dissipated in …

Generation Of Design Equations In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey, Robert J. Smith Jan 1969

Generation Of Design Equations In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey, Robert J. Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

One step in the synthesis procedure for realizing an asynchronous sequential switching circuit is the generation of next-state and output state equations from a simplified and coded flow table description of the circuit. The usual approach for determining these equations is to first construct a state table from the coded flow table, and then construct transition and output tables. For large flow tables this can be quite a lengthy procedure. This note describes an algorithm which simplifies the synthesis procedure for normal fundamental-mode circuits by permitting the determination of these equations without explicit construction of the state table, transition table, …

The material was then aged to a high strength condition, T6, or T8, in the case of the material reduced in the solution heat treated condition. The effect of the thermal-mechanical processing on the exfoliation corrosion resistance was then evaluated …

Effect Of Axial Mixing In Gas Absorption, Sundareswaran Parameswaran Iyer Jan 1969

Effect Of Axial Mixing In Gas Absorption, Sundareswaran Parameswaran Iyer

Masters Theses

"The effect of axial mixing in the liquid phase on the performance of a gas absorption column was studied using the experimental data of Michael Brittan for the carbon dioxide and water system. In this study, piston flow conditions were assumed for the gas phase. A one-parameter mathematical model, which characterized the flow regimes in both the gas and the liquid phases undergoing plug flow conditions, was first curve fitted for its unknown parameter (i.e. the Number of Transfer Units) by a non-linear regression analysis procedure. The "AAPD" (i.e. the Average Absolute Percentage Deviation between the predicted value of the …

An Investigation Of Transient Negative Resistance In A Cadmium Sulfide Device, John Irvin Giem Jan 1969

An Investigation Of Transient Negative Resistance In A Cadmium Sulfide Device, John Irvin Giem

Masters Theses

"An analysis has been made of a CdS device which exhibits a transient negative resistance at room temperature and low field strengths whereas previously reported cases of negative resistance in CdS were observed at low temperatures and moderate to high electric fields. The CdS bar was illuminated on one end in the vicinity of an ohmic In contact. Contact was made to the other end of the device with a rectifying Ag contact and the device was reverse biased. Experimental evidence and the analytical results both indicated that it is necessary that the material used to make the negative resistance …

Solution Of The Two-Dimensional Multigroup Neutron Diffusion Equation By A Synthesis Method, William Ray Heldenbrand Jan 1969

Solution Of The Two-Dimensional Multigroup Neutron Diffusion Equation By A Synthesis Method, William Ray Heldenbrand

Masters Theses

"A method, called the higher mode synthesis method, for the solution of the two-dimensional neutron diffusion equation is developed. In this method, the two-dimensional eigenfunction is expanded in terms of one-dimensional fundamental and higher eigenfunctions. A substitute, weight, and integration procedure is applied and the two-dimensional equation is reduced to a one-dimensional equation in terms of expansion coefficients. The expansion coefficients are combined with the trial functions in order to obtain the two-dimensional eigenfunction. This procedure results in a significant reduction of computation time as compared with standard iteration methods"--Abstract, page ii.

Design Of R-C-C-R Spatial Mechanism, Kao-Chien Hsei Jan 1969

Design Of R-C-C-R Spatial Mechanism, Kao-Chien Hsei

Masters Theses

"An analysis to design a particular R-C-C-R spatial mechanism was developed using tensor notations and operations. This specific R-C-C-R spatial mechanism can be used to couple two shafts intersected at a skew angle with constant rotating speed ratio. This skew angle, or bending angle of the two shaft, may vary from 30 up to 180 degrees. The governing equations of relative positions of the mechanism were formulated as a function of two variables: the bending angle of the shafts and the rotating angle of the input link. To exemplify the various design conditions, the design parameter versus the bending angle …

An Analysis Of An Audio Amplifier Utilizing An Operational Amplifier And Negative Feedback, Anthony Francis Lexa Jan 1969

An Analysis Of An Audio Amplifier Utilizing An Operational Amplifier And Negative Feedback, Anthony Francis Lexa

Masters Theses

"An audio amplifier utilizing a monolithic operational amplifier is analyzed. The analysis is a block diagram approach where the amplifier is divided into three parts; operational amplifier, power amplifier, and feedback network. A Fourier series analysis is used to describe the distortion and signal components of the amplifier output. The results of this analysis demonstrate the advantage of large negative feedback on frequency response and harmonic distortion. Using relatively few passive components a high quality audio amplifier is constructed with an output power of 15 watts RMS power and negligible harmonic distortion"--Abstract, page ii.

A Study Of Different Types Of Connections To Structural-Steel Square Tubings, Chao-Sheng Chen Jan 1969

A Study Of Different Types Of Connections To Structural-Steel Square Tubings, Chao-Sheng Chen

Masters Theses

"Although square tubular element has long been recognized as an ideal structural member, its acceptance was limited by the lack of detailed knowledge on suitable connections related to this geometric shape. It is structurally inefficient to use a strong column poorly connected to a strong beam. So it is necessary to understand, in advance of adoption, the effect and behavior of different types of connections and to develop an efficient structural system. In this study, the ordinary column-to-beam framing with different types of connections has been investigated. The three types of connections are single-plate connection, double-angle connection, and multi-angle connection. …

Thermal Fatigue Testing Of Die Casting Die Steels, Kulwant Singh Sabharwal Jan 1969

Thermal Fatigue Testing Of Die Casting Die Steels, Kulwant Singh Sabharwal

Masters Theses

"Thermal fatigue is a form of surface failure produced by repeated thermal stresses and is the main cause of die retirement in the die casting industry. A general review of the fundamental and practical aspects of thermal fatigue as encountered in the dies, based on earlier published work, is given and preliminary experiments in an effort to set up a suitable method of testing to study this phenomenon are then described. In the present technique developed to create the thermal conditions experienced by a die steel in aluminum die casting, a small portion of one face of a cylindrical test-piece …

Static And Dynamic Instability Analysis Of Rigid Frames With Timoshenko Members, Carlton Lee Smith Jan 1969

Static And Dynamic Instability Analysis Of Rigid Frames With Timoshenko Members, Carlton Lee Smith

Masters Theses

"In this thesis, a technique has been developed to determine the natural frequencies of plane rigid frames with the consideration bending, shear deformation, rotatory inertia, and internal axial forces. The internal forces are functions of the instability load of the vibrating system for which the effects of bending and shear deformation on the stability of this structure are considered. For the sake of completeness, the matrix formulations for the dynamic or stability analysis of a rigid frame are given. The stiffness matrices of these formulations are then derived. The influence of shear deformation, rotatory inertia, and internal axial force is …

Numerical Simulation Of Pressures In A Radical System, Vijender Nath Gopal Jan 1969

Numerical Simulation Of Pressures In A Radical System, Vijender Nath Gopal

Masters Theses

"The time-space location of an advancing front has been described in such a manner as to permit the calculation of frontal pressures when a heterogeneous (in permeability) radial system is subjected to water encroachment. A finite difference application has been developed to calculate these pressures at specified radial distances from the injection or production wellbore. These pressure have been further utilized to predict the pressures at the advancing front for different time intervals"--Abstract, page iii.

A Computerized Method For Finding The Dynamic Response Of Multi-Mass Systems With Damping To Arbitrary Inputs, Bakulesh Balbhadra Patel Jan 1969

A Computerized Method For Finding The Dynamic Response Of Multi-Mass Systems With Damping To Arbitrary Inputs, Bakulesh Balbhadra Patel

Masters Theses

"A practical procedure for the systematic application of Foss's method to the solution of multi-degree-of-freedom damped systems is presented. It is relatively easy to determine the response of classically damped systems to various inputs. For non-classically damped systems the method proposed by K. A. Foss has been employed. This method gives an exact and complete solution for the response of linear multi-mass damped systems subjected to arbitrary inputs. Since the method requires lengthy and complex computations, the use of a digital computer is essential. In order to obtain the complete response of a multi-mass damped system to both sinusoidal and …

A Geochemical Study Of The Maquoketa Formation In Pike County, Missouri, John Siegfried Trapp Jan 1969

A Geochemical Study Of The Maquoketa Formation In Pike County, Missouri, John Siegfried Trapp

Masters Theses

"Statistical interpretation of geochemical data was used to determine the environment of deposition of the Maquoketa Formation in Pike County, Missouri. A cyclic sequence was noted which can be best explained by cyclic climatic changes. During the study it was found that elemental relationships which would be expected in a freshly deposited sediment can be found in core samples. In samples from outcrops and quarry faces these relationships have been destroyed. As these elemental relationships reflect mineralogical relationships, serious doubts have arisen as to the validity of petrographic studies of samples taken from outcrops. This study indicates weathering may be …

Neutron Induced Changes To The Modified Ebers-Moll Transistor Model Used In The Net-1 Program, Kenneth Robert Smith

Masters Theses

"The development of theoretical and empirical relations which predict the permanent changes to the electrical characteristics of silicon transistors is described in this paper. Analytical techniques are also developed to obtain the parameters used in the Modified Ebers-Moll transistor model. The method employed is to determine the effects on externally measurable characteristics and to relate these changes to the parameters in the Modified Ebers-Moll transistor model. Further, all nonlinear characteristics are related to the independent variables with interpolating polynomials and degraded characteristics presented. then degraded characteristics are used to establish the parameters for and parameter changes to the transistor model …

A Study Of The Effect Of Tube Bundle Geometry On The Nucleate Boiling Region Of A Series Of Hydrocarbon Liquids, Robert Terry Montgomery Jan 1969

A Study Of The Effect Of Tube Bundle Geometry On The Nucleate Boiling Region Of A Series Of Hydrocarbon Liquids, Robert Terry Montgomery

Masters Theses

"The primary purpose of this heat transfer investigation was to determine quantitatively in what manner tube bundle geometry affects the nucleate boiling region of a tube whose single tube boiling characteristics are known. A series of tests were conducted with horizontal tube bundles which produced boiling in a saturated pool of n-hexane, n-pentane, and seven carbon (C₇) hydrocarbon mixture at atmospheric pressure. Tube bundle size and pitch were the principle independent variables considered. The phenomena of heater hysteresis and aging were also studied. Data are presented which indicates that aging probably is not a direct consequence of gas adsorption on …

A Synthesis Procedure Of Distributed Rc Parameter Networks, Chun-Ming Wen Jan 1969

A Synthesis Procedure Of Distributed Rc Parameter Networks, Chun-Ming Wen

Masters Theses

"Synthesis procedures for driving-point functions and transfer functions in the w plane are developed in this thesis. For driving-point functions and transfer functions which are single-valued in s, where s is the complex frequency variable, the synthesis procedures were derived from the extension of the O'Shea's trasformation [sic]. For the transfer functions which satisfy the stability theorem in the w plane, a synthesis procedure is developed by using a distributed-lag element (DL) or a uniform distributed RC (UDRC) network with matched terminations"--Abstract, page ii.

A Photoelastic Study Of The Stresses Around An Underground Opening And Its Support System, Alphonse C. Van Besien Jan 1969

A Photoelastic Study Of The Stresses Around An Underground Opening And Its Support System, Alphonse C. Van Besien

Masters Theses

"The stress conditions around openings in rock have long been of interest to the field of rock mechanics. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the stress distribution around an opening with a rib and wall-plate support system. A photoelastic model of the opening (a modified horse-shoe section) was loaded in the centrifuge to determine the effect of body loading. Both the tangential stress and the stress within the rock bench, due to the opening, were determined. The stress conditions within the bench were examined using simulated ribs and a loading frame. Application of the data is discussed, as …
