The Anodic Dissolution Of Tin In Acidic Chloride Solutions, Edward Chung-Hong Liu Jan 1970

The Anodic Dissolution Of Tin In Acidic Chloride Solutions, Edward Chung-Hong Liu

Masters Theses

"The anodic dissolution of Sn in acidic chloride solutions (pH = -2.0 to 2.9) was studied at 25ºC. The apparent valence of the dissolving ions varied from about 0.4 to 2.4, a function of both electrolyte and c.d. The complexing of Sn⁺² by Cl⁻ had an important influence with SnCl₃⁻ apparently being the dominant products. A reaction sequence is proposed involving the step-wide oxidation of Sn accompanied by reaction with Cl⁻"--Abstract, page 1.

Turbulent Structure In The Wake Of Sphere, Darrell W. Pepper Jan 1970

Turbulent Structure In The Wake Of Sphere, Darrell W. Pepper

Masters Theses

"The study of turbulent wakes is considered necessary to understand the droplet behavior associated with the collision coalescence phenomena in atmospheric clouds. The Vertical Atmospheric Wind Tunnel enables experiments dealing with this droplet behavior to be analyzed. The experiments conducted in the UMR Vertical Atmospheric Wind Tunnel consist of two parts: one is the investigation of the flow field characteristics in the test section of the wind tunnel; the other is the measurement of the turbulent structure in the wake of a sphere. The test section is rectangular in design and has a cross-sectional area of 36 square inches (6 …

Effect Of Surface Conditions On Nucleate Pool Boiling Of Refrigerant-11, Abbas M. Sinnarwalla Jan 1970

Effect Of Surface Conditions On Nucleate Pool Boiling Of Refrigerant-11, Abbas M. Sinnarwalla

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of surface conditions on the heat transfer for nucleate pool boiling from flat horizontal surfaces. Experiments were carried out using Refrigerant-11 at atmospheric pressure as the test fluid with Inconel-600 as the heater material. The heat transfer coefficient was determined for mirror finished, chemically etched, glass beaded and sandpaper roughened heater surfaces over heat flux ranging for 0 to 18000 BTU/HR SQ FT. At a given heat flux, the heat transfer coefficient was found to be the lowest for mirror finished surface and the highest for sandpaper roughened surface"--Abstract, page …

The Evaluation Of Radar Guided Missile Performance Using Various Target Glint Models, Franklin Delano Hockett Jan 1970

The Evaluation Of Radar Guided Missile Performance Using Various Target Glint Models, Franklin Delano Hockett

Masters Theses

"A radar guided missile seeker approaching a target arrives at a crossover point beyond which the entire target is illuminated by the missile seeker's radar antenna beam. When this occurs, for a complex target, the radar senses a time changing target center location which may greatly complicate the terminal tracking portion of the seeker's flight. This thesis documents various glint models in use today and compares the performance of these models by using a seeker model to determine the effect of glint on terminal tracking performance. A large volume of data has been compiled describing various radar characteristics of complex …

Carburization Of Type 316l Stainless Steel In Static Sodium, F. B. Litton, Arthur E. Morris

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The transport of carbon from an iron-87 wt.% carbon alloy through static sodium to Type 316L stainless steel was investigated at temperatures of interest to the liquid-metal fast-breeder reactor (LMFBR) program. The rate-controlling step for the experimental geometry employed was the diffusion of carbon in the source. © 1970.

Thermal Expansion Of Orthorhombic Pbo, Charles A. Sorrell Jan 1970

Thermal Expansion Of Orthorhombic Pbo, Charles A. Sorrell

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Thermal expansion of orthorhombic PbO was investigated by high‐temperature X‐ray diffraction. The coefficients in the a0, and c0 directions are equal and Pb–O chains extended in the a0 direction and bonded into layers in the b0 direction; appreciable Pb–Pb bonding is indicated. Coordination and bond distances observed in PbSiO3 and lead silicate glasses, which are similar to those of massicot, and PbnOn polymeric units reported in PbO vapor are interpreted as additional evidence of the importance of PbO chains as structural entities. Thermal Expansion Of Tetragonal Pbo, Charles A. Sorrell Jan 1970

Thermal Expansion Of Tetragonal Pbo, Charles A. Sorrell

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Thermal expansion of tetragonal PbO, investigated by high‐temperature X‐ray diffraction in vacuum, is nearly isotropic, with the coefficient in the c0 direction only slightly greater than that in the a0 direction. Volume thermal expansion is only slightly greater than in massicot. Retardation of the litharge‐massicot transformation is tentatively interpreted as the result of very low oxygen partial pressures caused by catastrophic oxidation of the stainless‐steel sample holder and resulting oxygen scavenging by lead vapor. Exact Solution For A Model Of Dislocation Pipe Diffusion, J. Mimkes, Manfred Wuttig Jan 1970

Exact Solution For A Model Of Dislocation Pipe Diffusion, J. Mimkes, Manfred Wuttig

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The dislocations are treated as an ideal array of parallel pipes of radius and diffusivity Dp embedded in the bulk material of the diffusivity Db. The exact solution of this problem of diffusion along semi-infinite edge dislocations is presented for cubic, tetragonal, and hexagonal crystals. The solution makes it possible to evaluate the dislocation pipe radius a and the ratio of diffusivities from one experiment. It is applied to experimental data for self-diffusion in tellurium available in the literature. The results of the calculations are a dislocation pipe radius a=(1.5 0.5)x10-4 cm and an activation energy for the pipe diffusion …

Cross Section For Excitation Of The Fourth Positive Band System In Carbon Monoxide By 20-120 Kev Protons, John T. Park, D. R. Schoonover, George W. York Jan 1970

Cross Section For Excitation Of The Fourth Positive Band System In Carbon Monoxide By 20-120 Kev Protons, John T. Park, D. R. Schoonover, George W. York

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Excitation cross sections for the fourth positive band system in carbon monoxide have been determined from studies of the energy-loss spectra of 20-120-keV protons incident on gaseous CO targets. The energy-loss spectra had an energy resolution of about 2 eV. Prominent peaks in the spectra were observed at 8.5 and 13.8 eV. The first peak is believed to be due to excitation of the fourth positive band system of CO (X+1A 1, while the 13.8-eV peak covers a number of possible states, including the B+2 and the C+1 states. Changes in the slope of the ionization continuum were noted at …

Radiative Heat Transfer Analysis From A Heated Airport Runway To Fog, Gordon L. Scofield, Tom J. Love Jan 1970

Radiative Heat Transfer Analysis From A Heated Airport Runway To Fog, Gordon L. Scofield, Tom J. Love

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Radiative heat transfer between a plane source and an aerosol is investigated through the Monte Carlo method. Thermal energy is transferred from a long rectangular source to monodisperse natural fog models. The analysis is only for radiative transport and does not include convection which would be coupled in a complete analysis. Direct energy transfer to the droplets of the aerosol is investigated for values of extinction coefficient of 10 km-1 and 80 km-1, absorption coefficient to extinction coefficient ratios of 0·4 and 0·5, and scattering functions of the strong forward and isotropic types. Monochromatic radiation at a wave length of …

Linear Regression Models Of Sound Velocity In The North Atlantic Ocean Below A Critical Depth, Richard Roland Kunkel Jan 1970

Linear Regression Models Of Sound Velocity In The North Atlantic Ocean Below A Critical Depth, Richard Roland Kunkel

Doctoral Dissertations

"Sound velocity models currently in use by the U. S. Navy require difficult data sampling at great expense. This study is to investigate the feasibility of a sound velocity model dependent only upon position that would be valid for a selected, reasonably large, near homogeneous area of the ocean. The most important position parameters are latitude, longitude, and depth. To accomplish this objective a critical depth of 2500 meters was established for an 8° by 20° rectangle of the Sargasso Sea which lies within the North Atlantic Ocean. The critical depth is defined as the depth at which the characteristics …

Realistic Impulsive P Wave Source In An Infinite Elastic Medium, Joseph Hugo Hemmann Jan 1970

Realistic Impulsive P Wave Source In An Infinite Elastic Medium, Joseph Hugo Hemmann

Doctoral Dissertations

"The generally assumed instantaneous impulsive pressure sources for an elastic P wave in an infinite medium lead to basic contradictions, a step function source yielding infinite displacements as the shear modulus goes to zero, and the total energy radiated by a delta function (or any derivative of the delta function) source being infinite. By noting that the character of the solution in the elastic region must match the acoustic case near the source, a realistic impulsive pressure source is postulated which has a finite time history. The elastic field produced by this source is then obtained in closed form. A …

Some Effects Of Oh Groups On Sodium Silicate Glasses, Mokhtar Sayed Maklad Jan 1970

Some Effects Of Oh Groups On Sodium Silicate Glasses, Mokhtar Sayed Maklad

Doctoral Dissertations

"Glasses of various compositions in the Na₂O-SiO₂ system were prepared with different levels of OH concentration. Phase separation kinetics, thermal expansion, radiation induced optical absorption, and internal friction of these glasses were studied. The increase in OH content in these glasses was found to (a) enhance the rate of phase separation; (b) increase thermal expansion above the glass temperature and change the dilatometric softening temperature in a way that depends on microstructure; (c) increase the radiation induced optical absorption bands associated with positive hole centers and decrease those associated with electron trap centers; and, (d) decrease the low temperature alkali …

The Reaction Of N-Sulfinylamines With Diazoalkanes, Harry R. Musser Jan 1970

The Reaction Of N-Sulfinylamines With Diazoalkanes, Harry R. Musser

Doctoral Dissertations

"The photochemical decomposition of diphenyldiazomethane in the presence on N-sulfinylamines leads to ketimines. By-products include tetraphenylethylene, benzophenone, thiobenzophenone, and benzophenone azine. This reaction is the first example of carbene addition to a non-carbon containing multiple bond system. Evidence indicates that the carbene adds to the N=S bond of the N-sulfinylamine to give the corresponding thiaziridine-S-oxide which spontaneously decomposes to give ketimine and SO. In the dark N-sulfinylaniline catalyzes the decomposition of diazoalkanes to carbenes. This decomposition presumably takes place through a thiatriazole-1-oxide intermediate. The carbene then reacts either with N-sulfinylaniline to form ketimine, after loss of SO, or with diazoalkane …

Theory Of Shallow Donor Impurity Surface States, Vidal Emmanuel Godwin Jan 1970

Theory Of Shallow Donor Impurity Surface States, Vidal Emmanuel Godwin

Doctoral Dissertations

"A variational approach has been used to solve the effective-mass equation, when the impurity ion is located at a depth d from the surface of a semiconductor, where 0 < d < db and db represents the case when the impurity ion is in the bulk of the semiconductor. The ground state and the excited state having the largest electric dipole coupling to the ground state have been determined. We have plotted the energy dependence on the depth of the impurity ion from the surface of the semiconductor. The energy has also been calculated as a function of the orientation of the …

Heuristic Algorithms For The Generalized Vehicle Dispatch Problem, Leland Ray Miller Jan 1970

Heuristic Algorithms For The Generalized Vehicle Dispatch Problem, Leland Ray Miller

Doctoral Dissertations

"A heuristic algorithm, called the sweep algorithm, is developed for the vehicle dispatch problem with distance and load constraints for each vehicle. A mathematical development and a step procedure for the sweep algorithm is given. Also given are eight problems and their solutions derived by the sweep algorithm. The solutions for this algorithm are compared with solutions from other vehicle dispatch algorithms, and the sweep algorithm is found to give better results for almost every problem. Various modifications are also presented for the sweep algorithm. A mathematical formulation is given for the vehicle dispatch problem with arbitrary cost functions at …

Extension Of Some Theorems Of Complex Functional Analysis To Linear Spaces Over The Quaternions And Cayley Numbers, James E. Jamison

Doctoral Dissertations

"In this work certain aspects of Functional Analysis are considered in the setting of linear spaces over the division rings of the real Quaternions and the real Cayley algebra. The basic structure of Banach spaces over these division rings and the rings of bounded operators on these spaces is developed. Examples of finite and infinite dimensional spaces over these division rings are given. Questions concerning linear functionals, the Hahn-Banach Theorem and Reflexivity are considered. The Stone-Weierstrass Theorem is proven for functions with values in a real Cayley Dickson algebra of dimension n. The concepts of inner product spaces and Hilbert …

Diffusion And Internal Friction In Sodium-Rubidium Silicate Glasses, Gary L. Mcvay Jan 1970

Diffusion And Internal Friction In Sodium-Rubidium Silicate Glasses, Gary L. Mcvay

Doctoral Dissertations

"The internal friction and self diffusion coefficients of sodium and rubidium ions for (1 - X) Na₂O·X Rb₂O·3 SiO₂ glasses have been measured. The diffusion measurements employed radioactive isotopes and a thin sectioning technique and extended from 350 to 500°C. Internal friction measurements were made from -150 to 500°C and at frequencies of 0.05 to 6000 Hz. The maximum height for the mixed alkali internal friction peak occurs at the composition where the sodium and rubidium diffusion coefficients are equal. It is concluded that the mechanism responsible for the mixed alkali peak is a cooperative rearrangement of sodium-rubidium ions and …

A Computer Simulation Of Mine Air Shaft Thermodynamics, Ambyo Sumopandhi Mangunwidjojo Jan 1970

A Computer Simulation Of Mine Air Shaft Thermodynamics, Ambyo Sumopandhi Mangunwidjojo

Doctoral Dissertations

"Several earlier investigations have been conducted into various aspects of heat problems in underground mines. The application of general gas laws and thermodynamics in the approach of mine ventilation has been helpful in elucidating certain difficulties associated with the subject. By combining several of the techniques perfected by these researchers and applying Carrier's method of calculation for heat flow from exposed rock strata into a workable plan, a method was developed whereby it is possible to accurately and conveniently predict the quality of working environment at any point within a deep mine. The findings of this study may be of …

A Fundamental Investigation Of The Gas Phase Polymerization Of Styrene And Vinyl Type Monomers In A Low Power Inductively Coupled 4 Mhz Rf Plasma, L. F. Thompson Jan 1970

A Fundamental Investigation Of The Gas Phase Polymerization Of Styrene And Vinyl Type Monomers In A Low Power Inductively Coupled 4 Mhz Rf Plasma, L. F. Thompson

Doctoral Dissertations

"A study has been made on the plasma polymerization of styrene and vinyl type monomers in a cold, low power, inductively-coupled RF plasma. All vinyl type monomers yielded an insoluble, crosslinked film which was slightly colored. A kinetic study is reported for styrene. The effects of power level, bleed rate of monomer, pressure and reactor geometry on the rate of polymer formation are reported. A mechanism is postulated for plasma polymerization. It was found that the initiation step was the rate controlling step and that the reaction followed a cationic polymerization scheme. Both crosslinking and discoloration of the polymers occur …

Voids In Neutron Irradiated Aluminum, Nicholas H. Packan Jan 1970

Voids In Neutron Irradiated Aluminum, Nicholas H. Packan

Doctoral Dissertations

"Void formation in high purity aluminum resulting from irradiation to fluences between 1.5 x 10¹⁹ and 1.6 x 10²² neutrons/cm² (E > 0 .1 MeV) at a temperature of 55 ± 5ºC was studied, primarily by means of transmission electron microscopy. In particular the effects of neutron fluence and flux were examined, as well as the possible influences of both preexisting and transmutation-produced impurities. A very low concentration of voids (about 10¹²/cm³) resulted from irradiation to 1.5 x 10¹⁹ neutrons/cm²; they averaged about 150 Å in diameter. Void concentrations and sizes increased with fluence, reaching values of 6 x 10¹⁴ voids/cm³ …

Upper Cretaceous And Lower Cenozoic Foraminifera Of Three Oil Wells In Northwestern Iraq, Farouk Sunallah Al-Omari

Doctoral Dissertations

"Seventy-five samples of well cuttings and cores from the Iraq Petroleum Company Butmah Well No. 9, Ain Zalah Well No. 16 and Ain Zalah Well No. 17, in northwestern Iraq at approximately 36° 37' north latitude and 42° 41' east longitude, have been examined in detail. The lithologic descriptive term "marl" is replaced by calcareous shale or argillaceous limestone, and the term "globigerinal limestone" is not considered applicable. The foraminiferal fauna from the upper part of the Shiranish Formation prove to be of Maestrichtian age. The Mesozoic-Cenozoic boundary is recognized on the basis of "smaller foraminiferal" faunal assemblages; it is …

A Coordinate Oriented Algorithm For The Traveling Salesman Problem, Joseph Sidney Greene Jan 1970

A Coordinate Oriented Algorithm For The Traveling Salesman Problem, Joseph Sidney Greene

Doctoral Dissertations

"The traveling salesman problem may be stated as follows: "A salesman is required to visit each of n given cities once and only once, starting from any city and returning to the original place of departure. What route should be chosen in order to minimize the total distance traveled?" A new algorithm is developed which gives a good approximation to the solution for a large number of cities using reasonable computer time and which will converge to the exact solution if allowed to continue. This algorithm is a branch and bound technique which utilizes the distance between cities in its …

A Quasi-Lattice Model Of Simple Liquids, Jesse Herbert Collins Jan 1970

A Quasi-Lattice Model Of Simple Liquids, Jesse Herbert Collins

Doctoral Dissertations

"A cellular model of simple liquids is proposed which eliminates the objectionable feature of long range order found in other cell models. The volume is divided into N identical spherically symmetric cells, each occupied by one molecule. The cell-center density distribution relative to an average given cell center forms a series of Gaussian peaks whose width is proportional to the square root of the distance from the given cell center. The number of cell centers and average radial distance represented by each of the peaks correspond to a face-centered cubic lattice. The molecular pair distribution function is determined for several …

A Three-Dimensional Mathematical Simulator Of Multiphase Systems In A Petroleum Reservoir, Leonard Koederitz Jan 1970

A Three-Dimensional Mathematical Simulator Of Multiphase Systems In A Petroleum Reservoir, Leonard Koederitz

Doctoral Dissertations

"A generalized digital analysis for calculating three phase, three dimensional flow in reservoirs is developed. The computerized mathematical model is applicable to depletion drive, gas injection, water injection, and/or aquifer drive systems with modifications specific to the simulation criterion of that type of drive and includes fluid compressibility effects, gravity drainage and capillary pressure. The simulation allows arbitrary consideration of reservoir heterogeneity, geometry, well locations and rates of production. An innovation to the alternating direction technique for linear differential equations discussed by Brian is developed and employed in order to render the method of solution applicable to non-linear differential equations. …

An Investigation Of The Stiffness Of Shafts With Integral Disks, Richard King Riley Jan 1970

An Investigation Of The Stiffness Of Shafts With Integral Disks, Richard King Riley

Doctoral Dissertations

"The results of an investigation of the effect of an integral disk on the torsional elastic stiffness of an axisymmetric shaft are presented. Various configurations of disk diameters and widths on a shaft of specified diameter were investigated, using a finite element method of calculation verified by experimentation. The finite element method is presented for the elastic solution of a general axisymmetric body under all possible axisymmetric load conditions. The axisymmetric body is idealized as an assemblage of triangular cross-sectioned torii representing both the normal and shear properties. The elastic stiffness is used to obtain the equilibrium equations of the …

An Investigation Of Nucleate And Film Boiling Heat Transfer From Copper Spheres, William David Hardin Jan 1970

An Investigation Of Nucleate And Film Boiling Heat Transfer From Copper Spheres, William David Hardin

Doctoral Dissertations

"This study consisted primarily of a laboratory investigation involving nucleate and film boiling heat transfer from copper spheres with saturated liquid nitrogen at atmospheric pressure. An initial study was directed towards obtaining reproducible boiling heat flux versus ΔT curves in the nucleate boiling region from surface conditions created by single and/or multiple glass bead peenings. The variables of bead size, nozzle line operating pressure, and distance a copper surface should be placed from the nozzle outlet were checked. The results indicated that a final peening of the surface with 0.0017-0.0035 inch diameter glass beads, a nozzle line pressure of approximately …

Anodic Dissolution Of Zinc In Potassium Iodide-Potassium Iodate Solutions, Chi-Chiu Yao Jan 1970

Anodic Dissolution Of Zinc In Potassium Iodide-Potassium Iodate Solutions, Chi-Chiu Yao

Doctoral Dissertations

"The anodic dissolution of Zn was studied in KI-KIO₃ solutions at 25ºC. In I⁻ solutions, it was found that the apparent valence of Zn ions going into solution is approximately two. Smaller values are obtained in IO₃⁻ solutions, with the most pronounced changes occurring in the higher concentrations. An empirical equation is derived relating the apparent valence (or anode efficiency) to the current density and concentrations of IO₃⁻ and I⁻. An anodic dissolution mechanism is proposed"--Abstract, page 1.
