Initial Operation And Calibration Of The Umr Supersonic Axisymmetric Wind Tunnel, James Riley Murphy Jan 1970

Initial Operation And Calibration Of The Umr Supersonic Axisymmetric Wind Tunnel, James Riley Murphy

Masters Theses

"Initial testing and a preliminary calibration were conducted in the UMR supersonic variable Mach number axisymmetric blowdown wind tunnel facility. During initial operations problems were encountered with control valve seat failure, control valve response and stability, and automatic operation. After having brittle fracture failures with seats made of nylon, Teflon and Telfon-copper composite, a copper seat was found to perform satisfactorily with minimal valve leakage. Control valve response and stability were greatly influenced by the setting of the needle valve located between the total pressure probe and the controller. The needle valve setting was observed to depend upon the stagnation …

Thermochemical Hydrogen-Deuterium Isotope Effects, Wayne C. Duer Jan 1970

Thermochemical Hydrogen-Deuterium Isotope Effects, Wayne C. Duer

Doctoral Dissertations

"The heats of solution at 25.0 ± 0. 1°C for each member of hydrogen-deuterium isotopic pairs (chloroform/chloroform-d, acetone/acetone-d₆, methanol/methanol-d₁, ethanol/ethanol-d₁, and water/heavy water) have been determined as a function of molality in a variety of solvents. The heats for most of the systems could be described as a linear function of average molality with an average deviation in fit of less than one per cent. Using these linear equations, heats of solution at infinite dilution were obtained by extrapolation to zero molality. The heats of solution at infinite dilution of the hydrogen containing compounds were subtracted from those of the …

Etch Patterns On Zone-Refined Fe, M. E. Straumonis, Chang-Soo Kim Jan 1970

Etch Patterns On Zone-Refined Fe, M. E. Straumonis, Chang-Soo Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Upon dissolution of zone-refined Fe in strong acids, mainly three kinds of corrosion patterns were observed in the crystallites of the sections. Regardless of the acids, the {110} plane always appeared on the three patterns in the form of smooth and even steps, ledges, or facets. The {112}, {122}, and {123} planes were also developed but to a much lesser degree. The {100} and {111} planes were not observed because grains of the respective orientation were missing on the sections. Attempts were made to explain the formation of the planes by taking into consideration the reticular density of the planes …

Mass Transfer From Spherical Gas Bubbles And Liquid Droplets Moving Through Power-Law Fluids In The Laminar Flow Regime, Robert M. Wellek, Cheng Chun Huang Jan 1970

Mass Transfer From Spherical Gas Bubbles And Liquid Droplets Moving Through Power-Law Fluids In The Laminar Flow Regime, Robert M. Wellek, Cheng Chun Huang

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Calculated mass transfer coefficients for the continuous phase are presented for internally circulating spheres of a Newtonian fluid traveling through a power-law-type continuous phase in the so-called creeping-flow region. The Nakano and Tien stream functions allow the Sherwood number to be computed as a function of the Peclet number, power-law index, and a viscosity ratio parameter. The Hirose and Moo-Young relation is shown to be a limiting case of this numerical solution. Mass transfer rates increase as the fluids become more pseudoplastic and/or the continuous phase consistency index increases, all other factors held constant. © 1970, American Chemical Society. Energy-Loss Spectra And Collision Cross Sections For Impact Of 20-120-Kev Positive Ions On Molecular Nitrogen, F. D. Schowengerdt, John T. Park Jan 1970

Energy-Loss Spectra And Collision Cross Sections For Impact Of 20-120-Kev Positive Ions On Molecular Nitrogen, F. D. Schowengerdt, John T. Park

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Inelastic energy-loss spectra induced by impact of H+, H2+, and Ar+ on N2 have been measured at incident ion energies of 20-120 keV, with an energy resolution of about 2 eV. Prominent peaks are observed at energy losses of 9.5 and 13.8 eV. The first of these is well resolved and is attributed to excitation of the Lyman-Birge-Hopfield (LBH) system of N2. The peak at 13.8 eV is believed due primarily to excitation of the bu1 band of the Worley-Jenkins series. The locations of these features on the energy-loss scale do not agree with results of the electron impact work …

Measurements Of Excited-State Population Ratios Of Atomic Hydrogen Produced By Charge-Exchange Neutralization Of Energetic Proton Beams, Robert H. Mcfarland, Archer H. Futch Jan 1970

Measurements Of Excited-State Population Ratios Of Atomic Hydrogen Produced By Charge-Exchange Neutralization Of Energetic Proton Beams, Robert H. Mcfarland, Archer H. Futch

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Excited-state population ratios for atomic hydrogen have been measured for energetic hydrogen ions neutralized by charge exchange with a number of different metallic vapors and permanent gases. Electric field ionization techniques were used to determine excitation ratios. Detection of the energetic ions and neutrals was accomplished using partially depleted surface-barrier detectors. Counting, using phase-detection techniques in which an add-subtract scaler was phased to the signal, provided an improved signal-to-noise ratio. Two methods were used to provide desired targets. Metallic vapor and permanent-gas thin targets of the order of 10-5 mTorr cm were produced as chopped neutral beams, using conventional crossed-beam …

Ground-State Wave Function Of Shallow Donors In Uniaxially Stressed Silicon: Piezohyperfine Constants Determined By Electron-Nuclear Double Resonance, Edward B. (Boyd) Hale, Theodore G. Castner Jan 1970

Ground-State Wave Function Of Shallow Donors In Uniaxially Stressed Silicon: Piezohyperfine Constants Determined By Electron-Nuclear Double Resonance, Edward B. (Boyd) Hale, Theodore G. Castner

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Stress-induced changes in the ENDOR spectra of a shallow donor electron interacting with various Si29 nuclei neighboring the donor have been experimentally and theoretically investigated. For each of the three measured donors - As, P, and Sb - the compressional, uniaxial stress was applied along the [001] axis and its magnitude corresponded to strains up to 10-3. To describe the observed linear and quadratic shifts and splitting's of the lines in an ENDOR shell, we have defined a set of piezo hyperfine constants. One piezo hyperfine constant was measured for each axis-class shell; three independent piezo hyperfine constants were measured …

Theory Of Droplet Growth In Clouds. I. The Transient Stage Of The Boundary-Coupled Simultaneous Heat And Mass Transport In Cloud Formation, John C. Carstens, Joseph T. Zung Jan 1970

Theory Of Droplet Growth In Clouds. I. The Transient Stage Of The Boundary-Coupled Simultaneous Heat And Mass Transport In Cloud Formation, John C. Carstens, Joseph T. Zung

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Two solutions to the system of equations describing the simultaneous heat and mass transport involved in the condensational growth of a droplet in a supersaturated atmosphere are presented. The first, valid for very short times, describes the transient stage of such growth; the second, valid for longer times, presupposes the establishment of a steady-state condition. The two are shown to be complementary for the cases examined. The equations examined satisfy the usual boundary conditions imposed on a drop in a concentric sphere as required by the cellular model for cloud formation. Hence our results can be immediately extended to the …

On The Longitudinal Impact Of Two, Thin, Viscoelastic Rods, A. G. Behring, R. B. Oetting Jan 1970

On The Longitudinal Impact Of Two, Thin, Viscoelastic Rods, A. G. Behring, R. B. Oetting

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A one-dimensional representation of the distribution of stress and strain resulting from the longitudinal impact of two elastic rods is developed. A form of the "correspondence principle" is then used to obtain series solutions for stress and strain distributions resulting from the longitudinal impact of two rods of a "Maxwell material." Results of the viscoelastic solutions, obtained by use of nondimensional variables, are presented graphically. © 1970 by ASME.

The Semibullvalene Question: A Semi-Empirical Molecular Orbital And Bond Energy Approach, Shiow Yeh Lee Jan 1970

The Semibullvalene Question: A Semi-Empirical Molecular Orbital And Bond Energy Approach, Shiow Yeh Lee

Masters Theses

"Semi-empirical molecular orbital calculations of the Extended Ruckel and MIND0/1 type have been performed on semibullvalene and the supposed transition state for its degenerate [3,3] sigmatropic rearrangement. The results have been coupled with bond energy calculations to ascertain whether semibullvalene is homo-aromatic or is undergoing a rearrangement of exceedingly low activation energy. A preponderance of the resulting data suggests that semibullvalene is homo-aromatic"--Abstract, page ii.

On The Flow Near An Enclosed Rotating Blade In The Neighborhood Of The Ground, Tze-Lien Liang Jan 1970

On The Flow Near An Enclosed Rotating Blade In The Neighborhood Of The Ground, Tze-Lien Liang

Masters Theses

"The flow in the vicinity of an enclosed rotating blade near the ground was studied both analytically and experimentally. Experimental results were obtained by making pitot tube traverses across the face of the housing but gave only a qualitative indication of the velocity distribution. Tufts of strings were used to locate the flow directions in the vicinity of the ground and the housing. The two dimensional potential flow solution was found to yield unreasonable results for this flow configuration due to viscous and rotative effects. The three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations were solved numerically by using the successive underrelaxation method. The results …

Fate And Effects Of Chemically-Precipitated Phosphorus In Anaerobic Digestion, Douglas Wayne Max Jan 1970

Fate And Effects Of Chemically-Precipitated Phosphorus In Anaerobic Digestion, Douglas Wayne Max

Masters Theses

"This study was conducted to determine the fate of chemically-precipitated phosphorus during the overall wastewater treatment process under actual field conditions. Specific objectives were: to evaluate the removal of phosphorus with alum and sodium aluminate in a pilot plant activated sludge system, to determine the fate of the precipitated phosphorus incorporated into the microbial floc when placed in an anaerobic environment, and to observe the effect of aluminum on the digestion process. Five 38-gpd continuous-flow activated sludge pilot plant units were operated at the Rolla Love Creek trickling filter plant and were fed with settled domestic sewage. The sludge from …

Neutron Dependence Of Neutral Base Region Recombination, J. Bereisa, C. A. Goben Jan 1970

Neutron Dependence Of Neutral Base Region Recombination, J. Bereisa, C. A. Goben

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A discrete, deterministic mathematical model has been developed for the bulk base region of graded base devices that accounts for both the effects of neutron-induced recombination and built-in electric field in the base region at low, intermediate, and moderate current/injection levels. Exact expressions are developed for the bulk base recombination current and the collector current as functions of neutron fluence. Exact expressions are derived for the base recombination term and the relative rates of neutron-induced base current increase and collector current decrease. These expressions involve exponential and hyperbolic functions and are well suited for numerical computations and theoretical analysis. Damage …

Nuclear Radiation Enhancement Of Transistor Forward Gain At High Frequencies, C. A. Goben, Y. P. Han Jan 1970

Nuclear Radiation Enhancement Of Transistor Forward Gain At High Frequencies, C. A. Goben, Y. P. Han

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This investigation has characterized the effects of fast neutron bombardment on a typical n-p-n transistor (2N914) of a common emitter amplifier operating at high-frequencies (>100 MHz) by means of s-parameter measurements from 120 MHz to 350 MHz, inclusive, every 10 MHz. The changes in the four (4) s-parameters and the trends and consequences of neutron bombardment are examined pictorially on graphs. The general effect of fast neutron bombardment is to decrease the magnitude of each s-parameter for frequencies below z. fT (where z = (O/1013)0.1). However, if the device is operating above z fT, the magnitudes of s11 (input …

Excitation Requirement For Rectified Output Ac Generators, Richard Thomas Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper develops a method for calculating the required dc field current of a three-phase synchronous ac generator for known dc load conditions and machine characteristics. The method is simple to apply and has shown good agreement with test data. The method is of utility for preliminary design and analysis of rectified output alternators, such as may be used in excitation systems of the largest ac generators, space vehicle power applications, or high-power industrial rectification. State Assignment Selection In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey Jan 1970

State Assignment Selection In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Methods already exist for the construction of critical race-free assignments for asynchronous sequential circuits. Some of these methods permit the construction of many assignments for the same flow table. The algorithm presented here consists of two easy to apply tests which select that critical race-free assignment most likely to produce a set of simple next-state equations. The algorithm has been programmed. Copyright © 1970 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Evaluation Of City And Region Planning Techniques, Charles Clay Miller Jan 1970

Evaluation Of City And Region Planning Techniques, Charles Clay Miller

Masters Theses

"The transportation and community planning effort in the United States has resulted in the expenditure of a great deal of time and money. However, the result of this effort has largely been unusable because of a lack of an effective formalized planning method. this thesis presents summarizations of the planning methods employed in ten plans which are typical of the U.S. Planning Effort. Each of these methods are critiqued in the light of a proposed planning method. The Federal Government has recently required the adoption of a Planning, Programming and Budgeting System (PPBS) in an effort to formalize a scientific …

Analysis And Control Of Noise Produced By Small Pneumatic Tools, Phillip Ray Elam Jan 1970

Analysis And Control Of Noise Produced By Small Pneumatic Tools, Phillip Ray Elam

Masters Theses

"Noise measurements were made near the exhaust of three small pneumatic tools operating under various loads and with various components removed. One-third octave analyses were performed on the noise for identification of noise sources and to determine possible noise reduction techniques. It was determined that the noise spectra consisted of broad band turbulent flow noise plus periodic components at the tool motor blade passage frequency and harmonics of this frequency. One tool, the nut setter, was selected for reverberant field noise analyses and noise reduction studies. Reverberant field measurements indicated that most of the tool noise was transmitted through the …

Computerized Methods For Estimating Heating-Cooling-Ventilating System Usage In All-Electric Buildings, Carl William Glaser Jan 1970

Computerized Methods For Estimating Heating-Cooling-Ventilating System Usage In All-Electric Buildings, Carl William Glaser

Masters Theses

"This thesis develops a method and a resulting computer program for estimating the energy input required by the heating-cooling-ventilating system of a building. The computer program has the ability to model the ventilating system and all the inefficiencies introduced when the heating system is allowed to fight the cooling system to provide temperature control within the conditioned space. The program also can consider mechanical heat reclaim accurately, making the consideration on a time of need versus a time of occurrence basis. The program is written to utilize input data in rather simplified form. This allows the program to be used …

Fault Detection In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Jeng-Chuan Kau Jan 1970

Fault Detection In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Jeng-Chuan Kau

Masters Theses

"As the asynchronous sequential circuit has become more and more important to digital systems in recent years high reliability and simple maintenance of the circuit is stressed. This paper presents a fault-detection algorithm which will be applicable to most of the practical asynchronous sequential circuits. The asynchronous sequential circuit is treated from the combinatoric point of view. First the minimal set of states, both stable states and unstable states, sufficient to detect all possible faults of the circuit is found from the fault table. Then a test sequence is generated to go through these states. It is assumed that testing …
