Image Detection In Signal Dependent Noise., Robert D. Laramore Jan 1975

Image Detection In Signal Dependent Noise., Robert D. Laramore

Masters Theses

"This thesis deals with the detection of two-dimensional signals in the presence of noise, including signal dependent noise. The object to be detected and the background are assumed known a priori. A decision rule based on a likelihood ratio test is obtained and the associated probabilities of detection and false alarm are evaluated. This is done first in general terms, where neither the form of sampling nor the model used for noise is specified. Then results are obtained for three examples: Poisson noise, signal dependent Gaussian noise, and binomial noise. Finally, the degradation resulting from a point spread function is …

The Spheriodization Of Tool Steels., Siri Ram Rai Jan 1975

The Spheriodization Of Tool Steels., Siri Ram Rai

Masters Theses

"Four different tool steels--AISI 01, Sl, A9 and Tl5--were obtained in the 1/2-inch diameter hot rolled and air-cooled condition from the steel mill. The lower critical temperatures of these steels were determined. The spheroidization of each steel by three different spheroidizing procedures was evaluated with the use of hardness testing and metallographic techniques. Isothermal annealing completely spheroidized each steel yielding coarse carbides and low hardness. Cyclic annealing was an effective spheroidization procedure only for 01 and Tl5 steels. Hardening and tempering resulted in rather fine spheroidized structures in these steels. The total time consumed to produce the best spheroidized structures …

Wastewater Treatment With Activated Carbon., Chia-Soui Joseph Lu Jan 1975

Wastewater Treatment With Activated Carbon., Chia-Soui Joseph Lu

Masters Theses

"The objectives of this study was to determine the capabilities of selected types of activated carbon as an adsorbent for the removal of organic materials from municipal wastewater and sludges. The organic sources included primary and secondary clarifier effluent, blended sludge, and digester supernatant. Two other organic sources, glucose and alanine, were also examined to determine their removal from aqueous solution by activated carbon adsorption.

The organic impurities, in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD), were reduced from 68 mg/1 in the primary effluent and 35 mg/1 in the secondary clarifier effluent to approximately 15 mg/1 for both. However, the …

The Availability And Development Of An Automated Accounting System For Small Businesses., Margy Rice Beckmeyer Jan 1975

The Availability And Development Of An Automated Accounting System For Small Businesses., Margy Rice Beckmeyer

Masters Theses

"A good accounting system is a very essential part of the successful operation of a small business but is often lacking. Therefore, the objective of this research is to furnish a general automated accounting system suitable for use by the small business firm.

To determine the feasibility, a statistical survey was made to evaluate the availability of automated accounting systems now available to small business. The results of the survey suggest that computer systems are presently available to small business firms at economical prices, but to minimize cost the small firm may need to supply its own accounting program.

Ultrasonic Instrumentation And The Dynamic Evaluation Of Asphalt-Aggregate Mixtures., John Edward Hill Jan 1975

Ultrasonic Instrumentation And The Dynamic Evaluation Of Asphalt-Aggregate Mixtures., John Edward Hill

Masters Theses

"Ultrasonic probes have been constructed for use in the dynamic and nondestructive testing of asphaltic concrete specimens. The probe systems exhibited characteristics superior to the solitary ii use of their main components, the piezoelectric crystals. The probes have the advantages of the reduction of ringing time, the concentration of ultrasound in one direction, the elimination of "noise" due to unshielded connections and the increased durability of the probe system.

The probes constructed were used in a limited testing program. Compression and transverse wave velocities in the specimens tested were measured simultaneously. Sample conditions suitable for maximum wave velocity corresponded to …

Disposal Of Lead And Zinc Cationic Wastes On Soils., Stephen Melvin Linnemann Jan 1975

Disposal Of Lead And Zinc Cationic Wastes On Soils., Stephen Melvin Linnemann

Masters Theses

"The sorption and desorption of lead and zinc on soil samples from the "New Lead Belt" of southeastern Missouri and from Springfield, Missouri, were investigated using both column and batch systems. These cations were selected for study because of the possible effects which soil pollution in the "New Lead Belt" mining region could have on shallow aquifers and because both metals are utilized in the electroplating industry.

It was found that soil has the ability to sorb lead and zinc; however, the cation-exchange capacity (C.E.C.) of the soils studied was not fully satisfied, though there was evidence that i f …

Phase Equilibria Near The Solidus Temperature For Iron-Rich Fe-Cu-C Alloys., Kenneth L. Metz Jr. Jan 1975

Phase Equilibria Near The Solidus Temperature For Iron-Rich Fe-Cu-C Alloys., Kenneth L. Metz Jr.

Masters Theses

"The effect of copper on the solidification temperature of graphite-saturated iron-rich alloys was determined with the use of cooling curves. The ternary invariant temperature for the alloy was found to be 1172°c with the use of heating curves. At 1172°c, graphite, austenite, an iron rich liquid, and a copper-rich liquid are in equilibrium. The composition of the metallic phases was determined by weight gain, chemical analysis, and the electron microprobe. In addition, the composition of the iron-rich liquid was calculated from thermodynamic data. Isothermal sections of the iron-rich corner of the system were constructed for several temperatures in the range …

A Method Of Predicting The Economic Effects Of Highways In Undeveloped Countries., Mohamed Magzoub Abdallah

Masters Theses

"This paper reviews the findings of the socio-economic impact studies pertaining to land-use changes. An attempt is made to explain, through land-use studies, the relationship between the past and future development of the City of Rolla, Missouri, and the system of highways serving the city, The relationship between land-use changes, expressed in active units rather than areas, and the level of activity related to those changes, rep resented by 0-D traffic volumes, is studied for Rolla and the difference in the behavior of this relationship in undeveloped countries is discussed"-- Abstract, p. ii

A Parametric Investigation Of The Validity Of 1/25 Scale Automobile Aerodynamic Testing., Marvin Eugene Doberenz Jan 1975

A Parametric Investigation Of The Validity Of 1/25 Scale Automobile Aerodynamic Testing., Marvin Eugene Doberenz

Masters Theses

"Wind tunnel tests have been performed measuring the aerodynamic forces and underbody boundary layer profiles for 1/25 scale models. The trends of the force coefficients with Reynolds number, the underbody boundary layer profiles, and the influence of the ground plane boundary layer on the force coefficients of small-scale models has been shown to be similar with previous results from larger models. This study has shown the usefulness of small-scale models for parametric studies of automobile aerodynamics. The agreement of the data with previous results, also supports the possih1lity o f a method of correction for boundary layer growth on fixed …

A Comparison Between Direct Waves And Head Waves In A Seismic Refraction Profile., Nelson Jose Aboud Garcia Jan 1975

A Comparison Between Direct Waves And Head Waves In A Seismic Refraction Profile., Nelson Jose Aboud Garcia

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to experimentally verify the theoretical prediction that the particle velocity of a head wave is the time integral of the particle velocity of a direct wave.

The procedure was to use small explosions in the field to generate direct waves and head waves in a surface layer of low compressional velocity overlying a higher velocity medium. The direct waves were distinguished by the ratio of frequencies and by the slopes in a time distance plot.

The result of comparing the particle velocity of the head waves with the integral of the particle velocity of …

Excitation Of Atomic Hydrogen To The N=2 States By 15-200-Kev Protons, John T. Park, J. E. Aldag, J. M. George Jan 1975

Excitation Of Atomic Hydrogen To The N=2 States By 15-200-Kev Protons, John T. Park, J. E. Aldag, J. M. George

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cross sections for the process H+ + H H+ + H* (n=2) are determined from the energy-loss spectra of 15-200-keV protons. After normalization at 200 keV to the Born approximation, the maximum value (1.07 x 10-16 cm2 at 60 keV) lies below close-coupling calculations and above Glauber-approximation calculations. The agreement with low-energy (5-30-keV) data of others is very good. © 1975 The American Physical Society.

Analogy Between Spinodal Decomposition And Martensitic Transformation, Tetsuro Suzuki, Manfred Wuttig Jan 1975

Analogy Between Spinodal Decomposition And Martensitic Transformation, Tetsuro Suzuki, Manfred Wuttig

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The translation of the theory developed for the spinodal decomposition of a supercooled alloy to the language appropriate for the martensitic transformation is carried out. In the spinodal theory, the stability of the alloy with respect to the composition fluctuation is examined, while in the present theory the stability of the crystal with respect to the shear displacement fluctuation, the transverse phonon, is studied. The analogy to the spinodal theory requires the revival of the strain gradient energy term or the couple stress term, the presence of which has been a subject of controversies for a long time since Laval. …

Crystallization Of A Tetrasilicic Fluormica Glass, W. H. Daniels, Robert E. Moore Jan 1975

Crystallization Of A Tetrasilicic Fluormica Glass, W. H. Daniels, Robert E. Moore

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The crystallization of a tetrasilicic synthetic mica glass of nominal composition K2Mg5Si8O20F4 was investigated at selected temperatures from 560° to 1150°C using DTA, density measurements, electron microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction techniques. Crystallization is shown to occur in 2 stages. (1) Initial structural ordering occurs at ∼600°C, as indicated by a strongly exothermic reaction, an increase in density, and the appearance of X‐ray diffraction lines. (This transformation temperature is related to fluorine content.) (2) The crystal morphology of the glass‐ceramic changes at 900° to 1150°C. A mechanism is proposed for the transformation from amorphous to crystalline structure in this synthetic mica …

Determination Of Oxygen Chemical Diffusion Coefficients In Single Crystal Srtio By Capacitance Manometry, D. B. Schwarz, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The oxidation kinetics of a single crystal of SrTiOs were measured with a tensivolumetric system over the temperature range 700 -975 at 0.03 atm oxygen pressure. The oxidation was found to be oxygen diffusion limited with an activation energy of 14.9 - 1.3 kcal/mole. Combining the kinetic data with relative defect concentration data yielded an activation energy for oxygen self-diffusion of 57 - 16 kcal/mole. The enthalpy of formation of doubly ionized oxygen vacancies was calculated to be 126 - 13 kcal/mol. © 1975, The Electrochemical Society, Inc. All rights reserved.

Mechanism Of Uai3 To Uai4 Transformation, Ling Ping Lee, Hollis P. Leighly Jan 1975

Mechanism Of Uai3 To Uai4 Transformation, Ling Ping Lee, Hollis P. Leighly

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The compound, UA14, which forms during the peritectic reaction (Liquid + UA13 → UAI4), has a long needlelike shape and reveals the characteristic morphology of a fishtail when cut along the long axis. When cut perpendicular to the long axis, it shows an internal core of another phase, which has been identified as a primary aluminum solid solution. Because of the interesting relationship between the crystallographic structures of UA13 and UA14, the peculiar UA14 morphology can be explained on the basis of a proposed mechanism. The mechanism of UA13 to UA14 transformation has been identified as shear and diffusion controlled …

The Effective Autocorrelation Function Of Maximum Entropy Spectra, Richard E. Dubroff

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The technique and the relative advantages of maximum entropy spectrum analysis have been discussed by Burg [1], [2]. Evaluation of the inverse Fourier transform of the maximum entropy spectrum shows that this method does, indeed, correspond to a reasonable nonzero extension of the autocorrelation function.

Biquadratic Exchange And First-Order Ferromagnetic Phase Transitions, Harry A. Brown Jan 1975

Biquadratic Exchange And First-Order Ferromagnetic Phase Transitions, Harry A. Brown

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have calculated some properties of a ferromagnet using a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with a biquadratic exchange term added. The constant-coupling approximation was employed. If the strength of the biquadratic exchange relative to the bilinear is given by a dimensionless parameter α, there is a critical value αc at which the phase transition changes character from second order for αα>αc. The spontaneous magnetization, the exchange energy, and the spin-correlation function show discontinuous jumps at α=αc and unstable behavior for α>αc. © 1975 The American Physical Society.

Electroless And Chemical Metal Deposition On Human Tooth Enamel., Richard Doyle Christie Jan 1975

Electroless And Chemical Metal Deposition On Human Tooth Enamel., Richard Doyle Christie

Masters Theses

"Initial investigations have confirmed the feasibility of depositing an adherent metal film onto tooth enamel. Such films might be used as pit and fissure sealants in preventive dentistry, with denture or orthodontic work, as an intermediate substrate with various organic or inorganic restorative materials, or other such areas. The process employs chemical solutions containing ions of the metal to be deposited and suitable reducing agent solutions.

To date, metallic copper and silver films have been plated onto teeth in vitro. The deposits are quite adherent and appear to exhibit the conductivity, crystal structure, luster, hardness, and other chemical and physical …

Investigation Of A Modulation Method And Signal Processing Techniques For Digital Data Transmission In Hf Channels., Michael Ray Campbell Jan 1975

Investigation Of A Modulation Method And Signal Processing Techniques For Digital Data Transmission In Hf Channels., Michael Ray Campbell

Masters Theses

"This thesis presents a method of improving the performance of digital communication systems operating in environments typical of the high-frequency (HF) band. The HF channel is a compound error event channel in that it contains random errors due to additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) plus burst-type errors due to effects such as impulse noise and tone interference. A method of signal design using the time-frequency plane is utilized. This facilitates design of signal sets that may be blanked in time and frequency, thus reducing the effects of the nonGaussian interference. Several signal designs are presented and compared in t􀁗rms of …

Project Program Evaluation Technique For Real Property Maintenance Activities., Richard Walter Graumann Jan 1975

Project Program Evaluation Technique For Real Property Maintenance Activities., Richard Walter Graumann

Masters Theses

"Managers of Real Property Maintenance Activities often only consider workmanship and customer satisfaction when evaluating the overall effectiveness of their contracted maintenance and construction projects. For multi-functional organizations where top management is responsible for the execution of several hundred concurrent, unrelated, unique, and widely dispersed projects, these subjective factors are not adequate to conduct a meaningful evaluation.

Top management must continually assess not only the progress of contracted work, but also the engineering design and contract administration functions. Published material has given little attention to the need for aggregating project data in a multi-project environment to provide management with the …

Experimental Investigation Of Supporting Wire Interference Effects In The Supersonic Near Wakes Of Slender Bodies., Dale M. Pitt Jan 1975

Experimental Investigation Of Supporting Wire Interference Effects In The Supersonic Near Wakes Of Slender Bodies., Dale M. Pitt

Masters Theses

"It is generally recognized that the presence of a model support sting i s likely to affect the model's base pressure and wake characteristics. The use of a wire-supported model is usually relied upon to obtain minimum disturbance measurements in the model's wake. Investigations into the disturbances caused by different size supporting wires have been conducted with the use of a 16-degree wedge and cone. The tests were conducted in the University of Missouri-Rolla axisymmetric supersonic wind tunnel at Mach 3.15, and at a Reynolds number of 2.14 X 106 per inch. Pitot pressure traverses were made in the …
