Differential Energy-Loss Cross Sections For Ionization Of Atomic Hydrogen By 25-200-Kev Protons, John T. Park, John E. Aldag, Jacob M. George, Jerry Peacher, Jim H. Mcguire Feb 1977

Differential Energy-Loss Cross Sections For Ionization Of Atomic Hydrogen By 25-200-Kev Protons, John T. Park, John E. Aldag, Jacob M. George, Jerry Peacher, Jim H. Mcguire

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ionization continuum cross sections, differential in energy loss, have been determined from the energy-loss spectra of 25-, 50-, 75-, 145-, and 200-keV protons scattered from atomic hydrogen. The theoretical differential cross sections in the Glauber and Born approximations that are presented show that the theory and the experimental results for 200-keV proton impact agree very well, but below 200 keV there are differences. These differences, which are more pronounced at the lower projectile energies, may be explained in terms of charge transfer to the continuum, which is not treated in our Born and Glauber calculations of direct Coulomb ionization. The …

Positron Lifetime As A Function Of Grain Size, Hollis P. Leighly Feb 1977

Positron Lifetime As A Function Of Grain Size, Hollis P. Leighly

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Published data on positron annihilation lifetime in copper as a function of grain size have been analyzed to show that there is a linear relationship between the internal grain boundary surface area, per unit volume, S v, and the positron lifetime, τ. The analysis indicates that grain boundaries are important in the trapping of positrons. It is suggested that the slope of the resulting straight line, dS v/dτ, can be used to determine the annihilation rate of the grain boundaries. © 1977 Springer-Verlag.

Estimating Hourly Solar Radiation For One-Axis Tracking Focusing Collectors, Carl E. Bingham, David M. Posner, Jerry O. Bradley Jan 1977

Estimating Hourly Solar Radiation For One-Axis Tracking Focusing Collectors, Carl E. Bingham, David M. Posner, Jerry O. Bradley

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Performance simulations of focusing parabolic collectors are hampered by a limited amount of useful insolation data. Hourly values of total radiation on a horizontal surface are the most common data available from the National Oceanographic & Atmospheric Administration. This paper develops a method to convert this total horizontal radiation to direct radiation on the surface of the tracking collector.

Plutonium Assessment Modeling -- Government Policy, Non-Proliferation, And The Government Fence, Harold A. Kurstedt Jr., Joel A. Nachlas Jan 1977

Plutonium Assessment Modeling -- Government Policy, Non-Proliferation, And The Government Fence, Harold A. Kurstedt Jr., Joel A. Nachlas

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Assessment modeling for the evaluation of plutonium as an energy resource is stressed, and generic mathematical model forms are outlined. Representative necessary objective functions are developed. Constraints and assumptions are listed. An example involving present-day light water reactor technology is demonstrated. Technical, environmental, and political implications are drawn. Specific new directions for analysis are suggested. The position of the boundary of government control and responsibility -- the government exclusion fence -- is shown to be a critical, but overlooked, constraint. Existing governmental uranium stockpiles may be an unmentioned, though important, constraint.

Energy And National Security, William A. Myers Iii Jan 1977

Energy And National Security, William A. Myers Iii

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

On April 18 of this year, the President of the United States made a television address to the American people on the subject of energy. It was a somber talk. He described the energy situation facing this nation as "the greatest challenge that our country will face during our lifetimes" with the exception of preventing war. He went on to say that our efforts to deal with the energy crisis must be the "moral equivalent of war", and that the alternative to those efforts "may be a national catastrophe."

President Carter's talk was not the first Presidential energy message. There …

The Impact Of Regulation Upon The Oil And Gas Industries, Lee Carter Jan 1977

The Impact Of Regulation Upon The Oil And Gas Industries, Lee Carter

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

It is paradoxical that the oil and gas industries both ask for and resist the idea of regulation. Historic examples are given of how and why this is so. Since the Arab oil crisis of 1973, new and onerous rules for domestic producers have been introduced, first by improvization and more recently by a national energy plan. Both the good and bad features of the 1977 national energy plan are reviewed to generate words of commendation and words of warning about its effect on the oil and gas industries.

Regular Singular Differential Equations Whose Conjugate Equation Has Polynomial Solutions, Leon M. Hall Jan 1977

Regular Singular Differential Equations Whose Conjugate Equation Has Polynomial Solutions, Leon M. Hall

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Consider the n -dimensional singular differential system defined by the operator $L:(Ly)(z) = z^p y'(z) + A(z)y(z)$, where z is a complex variable and p is a positive integer. The solvability of the nonhomogeneous system $Ly = g$ depends on the solutions of the homogeneous conjugate system, $L^ * f = 0$, where $L^ * $ is the operator conjugate to L. We show that $L^ * f = 0$ has polynomial solutions if the constant matrix in the series expansion of $A(z)$ has at least one nonpositive integer eigenvalue. Also, we show that if $L^ * f = 0$ …

Reliability Growth Apportionment, James K. Byers Jan 1977

Reliability Growth Apportionment, James K. Byers

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

A method is presented for apportioning reliability growth to the subsystems that make up a system in order to achieve the required reliability at least cost. Reliability growth apportionment is handled as an s-expected cost minimization problem subject to the constraint of meeting a system reliability requirement. The problem is formulated in terms of Duane's reliability growth model and is solved using geometric programming. The method can be useful in the early stages of system design to determine subsystem reliability growth that will allow a system reliability requirement to be met, and in the latter stages of system design when …

Laser Doppler Velocimetry Studies Of Early Turbulence, J. L. Zakin, C. C. Ni, R. J. Hansen, M. M. Reischman Jan 1977

Laser Doppler Velocimetry Studies Of Early Turbulence, J. L. Zakin, C. C. Ni, R. J. Hansen, M. M. Reischman

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Laser Doppler anemometry is employed to measure the mean velocity and turbulence intensity in the early turbulence regime of the flow of a dilute polymer solution through a small-diameter tube. (This regime is initiated at an onset Reynolds number in the subcritical range, above which the polymer additive increases drag, and continues through the transitional Reynolds number range, where a continuous transition to turbulent flow with reduced drag is observed.) When the onset flow rate for early turbulence is exceeded, the mean velocity profile becomes progressively flatter with increasing flow rate. That is, a gradual transition from a laminar profile …

Turbulence Structure In Drag Reducing Polymer Solutions, Gary Kent Patterson, Jack Chosnek, J. L. Zakin Jan 1977

Turbulence Structure In Drag Reducing Polymer Solutions, Gary Kent Patterson, Jack Chosnek, J. L. Zakin

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Longitudinal turbulence intensifies measured by split-film anemometry in degraded polymer solutions in pipe flow peaked much farther from the wall than longitudinal turbulence intensities in a Newtonian oil at the same Reynolds numbers. The peak values were at about the same level for the degraded solutions as for the oil but were higher and nearer the wall for fresh polymer solutions. Radial turbulence intensities were lower for the polymer solutions at all locations under all conditions. Drag reduction for the polymer solutions ranged from 1 to 21% based on Newtonian fluid of equal viscosity. For the fresh solutions the Reynolds …

Synthesis Of Heat Exchange Networks By Mixed Integer Optimization, R. C. Kelahan, J. L. Gaddy Jan 1977

Synthesis Of Heat Exchange Networks By Mixed Integer Optimization, R. C. Kelahan, J. L. Gaddy

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Process synthesis involves manipulation of the process arrangement, while studying the variables of each arrangement, to arrive at the optimal process. If each process arrangement is treated as a discrete variable, process synthesis becomes a mixed integer optimization problem. This paper examines the synthesis of heat exchanger networks using the adaptive random search procedure, which can be used to search continuous and discrete independent variables simultaneously. The means of handling the heat exchanger arrangement as a discrete variable is discussed, and the incorporation of various synthesis heuristics is presented. The results of synthesis of 2 x 2, 2 x 3, …

Optimization Of Methanol Process By Flowsheet Simulation, S. H. Ballman, J. L. Gaddy Jan 1977

Optimization Of Methanol Process By Flowsheet Simulation, S. H. Ballman, J. L. Gaddy

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Optimization of large complex chemical processes is a necessary step in economic design of these systems. Flowsheet simulation models afford an ideal mechanism for detailed optimization of these processes. The methanol process offers several interesting optimization variables (reformer temperature, pressure, and steam and carbon dioxide to hydrocarbon ratios; synthesis loop pressure, temperature, purge rate, and conversion) which require detailed models of the reaction kinetics. This paper presents the results of optimization of the intermediate pressure process using the PROPS model and the adaptive random search routine. The costs associated with performing such a detailed process optimization study are easily justified …
