Utilization Of Waste Heat From The University Of Missouri Research Reactor., Anek Punyakumleard

Masters Theses

"An analysis has been conducted to determine the economic as well as technical feasibility of using waste heat from the University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) to heat the reactor containment building and the associated laboratory building.

Several methods of waste heat utilization were reviewed, including open field agriculture, animal shelter heating, aquaculture, waste water treatment, and space heating. Based on this review, it was concluded that several of these waste heat utilization methods are feasible for the MURR. However, the most practical means of utilizing the MURR waste heat appears to be for space heating in the reactor containment …

Nucleate Boiling Heat Transfer Of Liquid Nitrogen From Plasma Deposited Polymer Coated Surfaces, Donald L. Warner, Efton Park, Kenneth G. Mayhan

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In certain cases, nucleate boiling heat transfer from polymerized tetrafluoroethylene coated surfaces was more than five times the rate of heat transfer found for uncoated surfaces at a given temperature difference. It was also found that for the polymer coated surfaces the transition from nucleate to film boiling was much slower than for uncoated surfaces. © 1978.

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effects of collagen concentration and molecular weight on the morphology and crystal orientation of electrolytic copper deposits have been determined and compared. The effect of chlorides in the presence of collagen on the above properties has also been investigated. Three different molecular weight collagens were studied and the consumption rate of each was determined by chemical analysis of the electrolyte before and after electrodeposition. Two-hour deposits were made in an electrolyte containing the subject collagens in concentrations ranging from 1.2 to 38.4 mg 1-1. Scanning electron and light microscopes and X-ray diffraction were used to evaluate the electrodeposits. © …

Vehicle Detection Using A Magnetic Field Sensor, Stanley V. Marshall

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The measurement of vehicle magnetic moments and the results from use of a fluxgate magnetic sensor to actuate a lighting system from the magnetic fields of passing vehicles is reported. A typical U.S. automobile has a magnetic moment of about 200 A-m2(Ampere-meters2), while for a school bus it is about 2000 A-m2. When the vehicle is modeled as an ideal magnetic dipole with a moment of 200 A-m2, the predicted results from an analysis of the sensor-vehicle geometry agree closely with observations of the system response to automobiles. Sld Potamology Study (S-9), Jerome A. Westphal, Samuel P. Clemence

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Foreword

In this report, the authors discuss factors which relate to flow characteristics of the Middle Mississippi River and its major tributaries. The variety of ways in which man and nature interact to affect the hydrologic regime of the study area are almost infinite. Furthermore, the intensity and direction of man's activity is non-uniform with respect to both time and space. Therefore, on the scale of the study area, the authors assert that 1) it is difficult to verify associations between specific human actions and river responses and 2) at this time, it is impossible to do so in a …

The Transition Of An Engineer To An Engineering Manager: The People Problem., Edward Leon Boyd Jan 1978

The Transition Of An Engineer To An Engineering Manager: The People Problem., Edward Leon Boyd

Masters Theses

“A review of existing literature and a survey of engineering managers are used to determine the work of the engineering manager, the career path leading to an engineering management position, and the skills that should be acquired by the engineer desiring to make the transition to an engineering management position.

The work of the engineering manager, like that of any manager, is getting things done through other people. In advancing to the first formal management position, the engineer usually passes through three career stages: engineer, informal manager, and formal manager. While advancing through these career stages, the engineer must increase …

Development Of A Quadratic Finite Element Solution Of The Convective-Transport Equation., David A. Dillard Jan 1978

Development Of A Quadratic Finite Element Solution Of The Convective-Transport Equation., David A. Dillard

Masters Theses

"A quadratic finite element has been developed for the solution of the general three-dimensional convective-transport equation. Inherent instabilities in the numerical solution arise when the convective terms in the governing equation become significant. An application of upwinding techniques to the 20 degree of freedom serendipity element failed to produce acceptable results. Upwinding was applied to the 27 degree of freedom Lagrangian element with good results. Results of the latter element are given for several problems, including a model of a round to round metal forming process"--Abstract p. iii

Measurement Of Poisson's Ratio And Tangent Modulus Of A Loess, Craig Randall Bowers Jan 1978

Measurement Of Poisson's Ratio And Tangent Modulus Of A Loess, Craig Randall Bowers

Masters Theses

"A series of triaxial tests are used to develop mathematical models for tangent modulus and Poisson's ratio for a remolded loessial soil. These two models are then utilized in a finite element computer program to model the behavior of a shallow foundation placed on compacted loess. Different models for Poisson's ratio gave widely varying load settlement curves, however a constant value of .32 gave results very similar to that given by the experimentally developed model. It was found that the model developed for tangent modulus yielded unreasonable results when utilized in the finite element analysis until a limiting value was …

Locally Quasi-Uniform Structures And Strongly Complete Quasi-Uniform Structures, Shirley Carpenter Huffman Jan 1978

Locally Quasi-Uniform Structures And Strongly Complete Quasi-Uniform Structures, Shirley Carpenter Huffman

Doctoral Dissertations

"Locally quasi-uniform spaces are studied, and it is shown that a topological space (X,t} admits exactly one compatible locally quasi-uniform structure if and only if tis finite.

A general topological result is given showing that a topological space with an infinite topology has either an infinite ascending or an infinite descending sequence of open sets.

The concept of aw-space is introduced, and it is ii shown that every w-space admits a strongly complete quasi-uniform structure. Also, a characterization of w-spaces is given showing when the fine quasi-uniform structure is equal to the fine locally quasi-uniform structure.

An example is given …

Cellulase Production By Fermentation With Trichoderma Viride On Cellulose And Wood Wastes, Nguyen Huu Kho

Doctoral Dissertations

"Cellulase production by the fungus Trichoderma viride QM 6a and the use of this cellulase for cellulose hydrolysis were studied using Solka Floc cellulose and waste wood (oak) as substrates. The fermentation produced higher enzyme concentration solutions with media containing additional amounts of soy peptone and KH2PO4.

The kinetics of fermentation in fermentors and shake flasks of Solka Floc and sawdust were investigated, and equations were selected to express the relationship of the rates of growth and enzyme production with cell mass, enzyme concentration and substrate remaining in the media.

Agitation and aeration decrease the enzyme …

Inferences On The Shape Parameter Of The Gamma Distribution And Cramer-Rao Lower Bounds From Censored Data, James Wyckoff Jan 1978

Inferences On The Shape Parameter Of The Gamma Distribution And Cramer-Rao Lower Bounds From Censored Data, James Wyckoff

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation is presented in publication form and consists of two articles. The first article considers inferential procedures on the shape parameter of a gamma distribution from censored sampling. Moments for the statistic T = log(x̅r/x͠r) are found and used to derive a two-moment chi-square approximation for T. This approximation is then used for testing, estimating, and setting confidence bounds on the shape parameter of a gamma distribution. The second article concerns the Cramér-Rao lower bounds for the variances of estimators, where the estimators are based on censored data. Convenient techniques are derived to evaluate the …

Some Results On Inferences For The Gamma And Double Exponential Distributions, John Victor Grice Jan 1978

Some Results On Inferences For The Gamma And Double Exponential Distributions, John Victor Grice

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation is presented in publication form and consists of two articles. The first article considers testing the mean of a gamma distribution. For the case that both parameters in the ganuna distribution are unknown, approximate tests for the mean are derived and tables are provided for their implementation. The power of the tests are compared to the power of the uniformly most powerful tests on the mean when the shape parameter is known. In addition, some limiting results are derived. The second article compares conditional and unconditional methods of constructing confidence intervals for the location parameter in the two-parameter …

The Paleontology And Biostratigraphy Of The Lower Ordovician Gasconade Formation Of Missouri, Bruce L. Stinchcomb Jan 1978

The Paleontology And Biostratigraphy Of The Lower Ordovician Gasconade Formation Of Missouri, Bruce L. Stinchcomb

Doctoral Dissertations

"The biostratigraphy, paleoecology and paleontology of the Lower Ordovician Gasconade Formation in Missouri is reinvestigated in an attempt to solve problems that have arisen since the classic earlier studies by Ulrich, Bridge and others. Twelve faunal zones are established, many based on primitive mollusks which dominate the formation. The oldest of these, in the Van Buren Member, is the Hypseloaonus Zone. This is followed by a zone characterized by the primitive cephalopod Dakeoaeras then a zone dominated by the gastropod Sinuopea. These zones are succeeded by the Euomphalopsis, Matthevia and Ozarkina Zones which lie stratigraphically below the Cryptozoon Zone, …

Adaptive Control Of A Cloud Simulation Chamber Expansion System, Katiya Greigarn Jan 1978

Adaptive Control Of A Cloud Simulation Chamber Expansion System, Katiya Greigarn

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation describes the design and construction of a closed-loop computer controlled expansion system for a cloud simulation chamber. The chamber is used to simulate atmospheric phenomena for the study of microphysical processes. In order to accomplish this, the sample gas inside the chamber must be expanded adiabatically. This means the wall temperature and the gas temperature must be made to agree as closely as possible. The wall is cooled by thermoelectric modules, and the temperature is controlled by analog controllers. The gas is cooled by the adiabatic expansion, and the corresponding pressure is controlled by a laboratory minicomputer, a …

The Effects Of Certain Impurities And Their Interactions On Zinc Electrowinning, Donald R. Fosnacht Jan 1978

The Effects Of Certain Impurities And Their Interactions On Zinc Electrowinning, Donald R. Fosnacht

Doctoral Dissertations

“The effects of germanium, antimony, arsenic, cobalt, glue, and free acid concentration were studied on both commercial and synthetic electrolytes. The effects of a single factor and the combined effects of multiple factors were elucidated. The temperature, zinc concentration, and current density were also varied. It was found that the acid concentration was the most critical factor when impurity levels were at normal plant solution concentrations. The ranges where the effect of the impurity became apparent were: greater than 20 ppb for antimony; 40 ppb for germanium; 120 ppb for arsenic; and 7-8 mg/l for cobalt for a solution containing …
