Studies Of H₂O On Ss-Agi Surfaces: An Effective Pair Potential Model, Barbara N. Hale, Jerry Kiefer Jul 1980

Studies Of H₂O On Ss-Agi Surfaces: An Effective Pair Potential Model, Barbara N. Hale, Jerry Kiefer

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effective pair potential functions are used to study the adsorption of a water molecule on surfaces of β-AgI. The water molecule is represented by a rigid point charge ST-2 model and the AgI substrate by an array of point atoms with effective charge ±0.6e, Lennard-Jones cores, and ionic polarizabilities. Maximal binding energy surfaces and optimal H2O configurations are generated for the water molecule adsorbed on the rigid and unrelaxed basal and prism AgI faces. Adsorption of the H2O above a two layer ledge, an iodine vacancy, and an H2O trapped in the …

Evaluation Of Zinc Sulphate Electrolytes Containing Certain Impurities And Additives By Cyclic Voltammetry, D. R. Fosnacht, Thomas J. O'Keefe Jul 1980

Evaluation Of Zinc Sulphate Electrolytes Containing Certain Impurities And Additives By Cyclic Voltammetry, D. R. Fosnacht, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The polarization characteristics of acid zinc sulphate electrolytes containing various amounts of germanium and cobalt were examined by cyclic voltammetry. The effects of zinc and acid concentration, temperature, and surface preparation were also investigated. Small concentrations of impurities are shown to cause measurable changes in polarization behavior. Levels as low as 0.02 mgl-1 Ge and 0.1 mgl-1 Co can be detected using this technique. The actual mechanism of impurity behavior is more clearly delineated using this technique and evaluation of the data from these tests indicate that germanium and cobalt form local galvanic cells. The results of these short-term tests …

Load And Resistance Factor Design Of Cold-Formed Steel : Tentative Recommendation - Load And Resistance Factor Design Criteria For Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members And Commentary Thereon, Wei-Wen Yu, Theodore V. Galambos

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

This progress report contains the following two parts: Part I: Tentative Recommendations - Load and Resistance Factor Design Criteria for Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members (pp. i-47). Part II: Commentary on Tentative Recommendations - Load and Resistance Factor Design Criteria for Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members (pp. 48-86). The tentative design recommendations are based on the statistical data presented in previous progress reports and the newly revised load factors used in Section 8.3.4 of the design criteria. The selections of ¢ factors are discussed in the Commentary for various types of structural members and connections. This investigation was sponsored by American Iron …

Potential Use Of Chemical Spot Test Method For Submicron Aerosol Sizing, Paul C. Yue, Josef Podzimek Mar 1980

Potential Use Of Chemical Spot Test Method For Submicron Aerosol Sizing, Paul C. Yue, Josef Podzimek

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A submicron particle, which is too small to be observed in an optical microscope, may form an observable spot on a chemically prepared substrate of the collector. The size of the spot or "Liesegang circle" is related to the aerodynamic diameter of the particle through a magnification factor. This paper presents the experimental results of the study of this factor using sodium chloride aerosol in the size range of 0.5 to 2 pm which has not previously been studied. We calibrated a cylindrical centrifuge with known sized latex particles. A relationship between the aerodynamic diameter and the deposition length is …

Angular Differential Cross Sections For Excitation Of Atomic Hydrogen To The N=2 Level By Proton Impact, John T. Park, John E. Aldag, Jerry Peacher, Jacob M. George Mar 1980

Angular Differential Cross Sections For Excitation Of Atomic Hydrogen To The N=2 Level By Proton Impact, John T. Park, John E. Aldag, Jerry Peacher, Jacob M. George

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Differential cross sections for 15-145-keV proton impact excitation of atomic hydrogen to the n=2 level have been determined for center-of-mass scattering angles 0 to 1.2 mrad. The cross sections were obtained from an analysis of the angular distribution of protons which had lost an energy corresponding to the excitation of atomic hydrogen to its n=2 level. The differential cross sections obtained are in rather good agreement with available coupled-state calculations as well as the simpler Glauber-approximation calculations. However, at the larger scattering angles the cross sections obtained from the theoretical treatments appear to decrease more rapidly than the experimental data.

The Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Columns, Du Thinh Dat, Teoman Peköz Feb 1980

The Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Columns, Du Thinh Dat, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION The flexural buckling of columns is a fundamental problem whose solution was found by Euler more than 200 years ago. Since then, refinements have extended the solution to the inelastic range and clarified the influence of initial deflections and residual stresses. Most of these advances were made by studying hot-rolled steel columns, which are widely used. Cold-formed sections are coming into greater and greater use, thanks to the great variety of geometries available, which make them suitable for specific needs, and the significant advances made in the last four decades in understanding the behavior of cold-formed steel and in …

Ultimate Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Z-Purlins, M. A. A. Razak, Teoman Peköz Feb 1980

Ultimate Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Z-Purlins, M. A. A. Razak, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION Cold-formed steel structures are being widely used in various forms of construction such as industrial plants, gymnasiums, hangars and metal buildings. One important feature of metal building construction is the use of light gage roof panels connected to purlins, particularly of the Z-section. This section is, besides the channel-section, the simplest two-flange section which can be produced by cold-forming. The purlins have span lengths of 20 to 25 feet, generally made continuous over the building rigid frames by nesting. Construction details vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. The purlins available would typically have prepunched holes for connection of various types …

The Ferc's Purpa Cogeneration Rules: Economics, Rate Design, And Policy Aspects, Charles David Laderoute Jan 1980

The Ferc's Purpa Cogeneration Rules: Economics, Rate Design, And Policy Aspects, Charles David Laderoute

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Nearly two years have passed since the United States Congress enacted and the President signed into law the so-called National Energy Act which was actually comprised of five separate acts:

(1) Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA)
(2) Powerplant and Industrial Fuel Use Act (FUA)
(3) Natural Gas Policy Act (NGPA)
(4) Energy Tax Act (ETA)
(5) National Energy Conservation Policy Act (NECPA)

Title II of PURPA addresses, inter alia, the issue of cogeneration: a technology that in recent years has received increasing attention as a method of utilizing our energy sources more efficiently. The first four of the above …
