An Improved Algorithm For Generating Minimal Perfect Hash Functions, Thomas J. Sager
An Improved Algorithm For Generating Minimal Perfect Hash Functions, Thomas J. Sager
Computer Science Technical Reports
A minimal perfect hash function (MPHF) is a function from a set of M objects to the first M non-negative integers. MPHF's are useful for the compact storage and fast retrieval of frequently used objects such as reserved words in a programming language or commonly employed words in a natural language. In this paper we improve on an earlier result and present an algorithm for generating MPHF's with an expected time complexity proportional to M4. We also give a MPHF for the 256 most frequently used words in the English language.
Parallelism In The Language, Natural, Thomas J. Sager
Parallelism In The Language, Natural, Thomas J. Sager
Computer Science Technical Reports
Natural is a language designed to provide a vehicle for the expression of abstract programming concepts clearly and precisely in a natural and mathematical form. The concept of parallelism can be expressed both explicitly and implicitly in the language, Natural. Due to relative freedom from side-effects and the use of a special value, undef, subexpressions can often be evaluated in parallel. The for and do statements both allow for a parallel mode of execution. A builtin functional, prlleval, creates functions which can evaluate their arguements in a parallel mode. In addition, the concept of module allows for the definition of …
A New Method For Generating Minimal Perfect Hash Functions, Thomas J. Sager
A New Method For Generating Minimal Perfect Hash Functions, Thomas J. Sager
Computer Science Technical Reports
A perfect hash function, PHF, is an injection, F, from a set, W, of M objects into the set consisting of the first N non-negative integers where N>=M. If N=M then F is a minimal perfect hash function, MPHF. PHFs are useful for the compact storage and fast retrieval of frequently used objects such as reserved words in a programming language or commonly employed words in a natural language.
The mincycle algorithm for finding PHFs executes with an expected time complexity proportional to M4 and has been used successfully on sets of cardinality up to 256. The mincycle …

Equivalent Electron Fluence For Space Qualification Of Shallow Junction Heteroface Gaas Solar Cells, John W. Wilson, L. V. Stock
Equivalent Electron Fluence For Space Qualification Of Shallow Junction Heteroface Gaas Solar Cells, John W. Wilson, L. V. Stock
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
It is desirable to perform qualification tests prior to deployment of solar cells in space power applications. Such test procedures are complicated by the complex mixture of differing radiation components in space which are difficult to simulate in ground test facilities. Although it has been shown that an equivalent electron fluence ratio cannot be uniquely defined for monoenergetic proton exposure of GaAs shallow junction cells, an equivalent electron fluence test can be defined for common spectral components of protons found in space. Equivalent electron fluence levels for the geosynchronous environment are presented.

Defect Structure Of Mg‐Doped Lacro3 Model And Thermogravimetric Measurements, B. K. Flandermeyer, M. M. Nasrallah, A. K. Agarwal, Harlan U. Anderson
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Chemical stability and cation stoichiometry determine the applicability of LaCrO3 as a high‐temperature oxide electrode. A model for the behavior of acceptor‐doped LaCrO3, as a function of oxygen activity is proposed. The model is in agreement with experimental data on Mg‐doped LaCrO3. Stability regimes and compensation mechanisms at various oxygen activities and temperature are presented. Copyright © 1984, Wiley Blackwell. All rights reserved
Electron-Ion Recombination In Gas Mixtures Of Helium, Nitrogen, And Carbon Dioxide, Ian M. Littlewood, M. C. Cornell, Kaare J. Nygaard
Electron-Ion Recombination In Gas Mixtures Of Helium, Nitrogen, And Carbon Dioxide, Ian M. Littlewood, M. C. Cornell, Kaare J. Nygaard
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A study has been conducted to determine the electron-ion recombination rates in gas mixtures of helium, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. Measurements were made as functions of electric field strength, gas pressure, and gas composition. In gas mixtures containing only nitrogen and carbon dioxide, the rates were dependent on pressure. This dependence is interpreted as being due to the separate effects of two- and three-body recombination processes. No pressure dependence was observed for mixtures containing helium. In such mixtures, two-body recombination appears to be dominant. Moreover, the addition of relatively low concentrations of helium to the discharge leads to a dramatic …

"The effects of varying current density, temperature, Zn⁺² and licorice concentrations on the morphology of the zinc deposited on steel wire have been studied and compared. The plated wires were then drawn and evaluated in terms of required drawing energy and zinc loss during processing of up to 40% reduction in area. Scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction were used to evaluate the electrodeposits"--Abstract, page ii.
Thermally Stimulated Current Studies Of Barium Titanate Capacitors, Patrick Donald Martin
Thermally Stimulated Current Studies Of Barium Titanate Capacitors, Patrick Donald Martin
Masters Theses
"Thermally stimulated polarization current (TSPC) and thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) measurements were used to study sample current behavior based on the thermally activated release of trapped charges and polarization mechanisms. Samples studied included laboratory-prepared barium titanate samples (the barium to titanium ratio ranging from 0.96 to 1.04) and commercial ceramic capacitors. Both TSPC and TSDC showed the current spectra of the barium titanate samples were a function of crystal structure and the Ba/Ti ratio. The TSPC/TSDC results of the ceramic capacitors showed differences between capacitor formulations. TSPC/TSDC results also showed differences between good capacitors (physically and electrically) and capacitors …

Oxygen Activity Dependence Of The Electrical Conductivity Of Li‐Doped Cr2o3, R. F. Huang, A. K. Agarwal, Harlan U. Anderson
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The electrical conductivity of Li‐doped Cr2O3 was investigated as a function of PO2, temperature, and dopant content. Results show that the electrical conductivity remains almost unchanged with decreasing P O2 in the high‐P O2 region but decreases rapidly at low P O2. A second phase was found in samples which contained more than 0.85 mol% Li. The results are explained by a model in which the concentration of charge carriers is dependent on the acceptor dopant and oxygen vacancy concentration. Copyright © 1984, Wiley Blackwell. Significant new evidence is reported for resonant transfer and excitation in ion-atom collisions. This process, which is analogous to dielectronic recombination, occurs when a target electron is captured simultaneously with the excitation of the projectile followed by photon emission. Strong resonant behavior with structure, in agreement with theoretical calculations, is observed in the cross section for projectile K x rays coincident with single electron capture for 100-360-MeV Ca16+,17+,18+20 and 180-460-MeV V19+,20+,21+23 ions colliding with helium. © 1984 The American Physical Society.

The Homogeneous Nucleation Of Nonane, G. W. Adams, John L. Schmitt, R. A. Zalabsky
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The homogeneous nucleation rate of n-nonane has been measured as a function of temperature and supersaturation ratio in a precision fast-expansion chamber. The measured nucleation rate ranges from 102 to 105 drops/cm3 over the temperature range 215-270 K. The results have been compared to the classical theory and to the classical theory with the RKC replacement factor. The RKC theory functional form is the basis for an empirical rate equation to fit the data. A full listing of the thermodynamic constants used for the reduction of the data is given. © 1984 American Institute of Physics.

"This thesis describes the rationale for a computer program used as a teaching aid, as well as, the design, development, and implementation of that computer program. The program is a prototype that displays, line by line, a graphical depiction of a BASIC program being executed. Icons are used to represent FOR-NEXT loops, the contents of variables, I/O, and other programming elements. The internal logic associated with the Arithmetic-Logic Unit is also represented. The purpose is to produce an environment where the student may visualize the processes occurring in memory by viewing a symbolic portrayal of an executing program. The example …
Molecular-State Cross-Section Calculations For H+Csh-+Cs+, Ronald E. Olson, M. Kimura, H. Sato
Molecular-State Cross-Section Calculations For H+Csh-+Cs+, Ronald E. Olson, M. Kimura, H. Sato
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Pseudopotential molecular-structure calculations have been used to obtain the seven lowest 1 and 1 states of CsH. These states and their associated radial and rotational coupling terms have been used to calculate the cross sections for H-+Cs+ ion-pair production in H+Cs(6s) and H+Cs*(6p) collisions at energies from 0.1 to 10 keV. The ion-ion mutual neutralization cross section, H-+Cs+ H+Cs, is also presented. The cross-section calculations were done with the perturbed-stationary-state method, modified to include two-electron translation factors. The ion-pair production cross section for ground-state reactants is in good agreement with experiment; collisions of H with excited Cs*(6p) show an order-of-magnitude …
A Study On Fragmentation And Ground Vibration With Air Space In The Blasthole, Everett Ellsworth Bleakney Iii
A Study On Fragmentation And Ground Vibration With Air Space In The Blasthole, Everett Ellsworth Bleakney Iii
Masters Theses
"The degree of fragmentation and the level of ground vibration from a bench blast employing standard full-column completely-coupled explosive charges are commonly controlled by varying one or more of the many dimensional variables of blast design. Blasting techniques such as decoupling and air-gapping, utilizing air space in the blasthole, have also been reported as having the potential to control rock fragmentation and ground vibration.
This investigation, using reduced-scale in situ bench blasts, examined the degree of fragmentation and the level of ground vibrations produced from the standard full-column completely-coupled, air-gapped, and decoupled methods of blasting to:
1. Compare the effectiveness …
A Thermal Contact Conductance Correlation For Mechanically Expanded Finned Tube Heat Exchangers, Mahmoud Ahmed Abu Ebid
A Thermal Contact Conductance Correlation For Mechanically Expanded Finned Tube Heat Exchangers, Mahmoud Ahmed Abu Ebid
Masters Theses
"Tests were conducted in dry vacuum environment, on eight mechanically expanded finned tube heat exchangers (with 3/8 inch outer diameter tubes) with different geometries including variation in fin thickness, fin collar length, and net interference. One of the eight heat exchangers was also tested under wet conditions. A mathematical model was used to calculate the thermal contact conductance from the experimental data. An error analysis was performed to estimate the range of error in determining the thermal contact conductance. A correlation of the dry contact conductance in terms of fin number (actual fin collar length in contact with the tubes), …
The Compositional And Temperature Dependence Of Radiation-Induced Void Nucleation And Swelling In Austenitic Alloys, Bahram Esmailzadeh
The Compositional And Temperature Dependence Of Radiation-Induced Void Nucleation And Swelling In Austenitic Alloys, Bahram Esmailzadeh
Masters Theses
"The objective of this study is to introduce a model which can demonstrate the major features of the compositional and temperature dependence of radiation-induced swelling of austenitic alloys. The effective vacancy diffusion coefficient, DVeff, is the prime variable explored in this study. Variations in DVeff with composition and/or irradiation temperature are used along with the KWR nucleation theory to determine the subsequent effects of these variables on the void nucleation rate and the duration of the transient regime. The materials chosen for this study are nickel (Ni) and the Ni-Si, Fe-Ni-Cr and Fe-Ni-Cr-Si alloy systems. …
An Investigation Of Methods Of Surface Estimation With Application To The Interpolation Of Antenna Patterns, Paul Matthew Niall Feehan
An Investigation Of Methods Of Surface Estimation With Application To The Interpolation Of Antenna Patterns, Paul Matthew Niall Feehan
Masters Theses
"The problem of estimating a surface from a set of discrete measurements lying along straight lines is considered. This situation arises when one attempts to determine the S-Band antenna gain pattern for the Space Shuttle, from measurements taken at several ground stations. The results of previous investigators concerned with the performance of surface approximation techniques for the present application, are extended in this study by examining the case where the data samples are corrupted by measurement noise. Results have been obtained using least-squares approximation with bicubic B-spline basis functions, and for an interpolation algorithm in conjunction with a spatial smoothing …
