The (Er1-xHox)Rh4B4 pseudoternary alloy system has a minimum in the phase boundary between the superconducting and ferromagnetic phases near x=0.3. This minimum has been identified as due to the competing magnetic anisotropies of Er and Ho. It has also been suggested that there could be a Lifschitz point near the minimum. Using the 30-m SANS camera at the National Center for Small-Angle Scattering Research at ORNL, we have observed a peak in the SANS pattern for (Er 0.8Ho0.2)Rh4B4 at Q=0.065 Å-1. This peak appears for …

Comparison And Evaluation Of Web Crippling Prediction Formulas, Monique Bakker, Teoman Peköz
Comparison And Evaluation Of Web Crippling Prediction Formulas, Monique Bakker, Teoman Peköz
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
Since the use of end and load stiffeners is frequently impractical in thin-walled cold-formed steel construction, the webs of beams a.nd deck oay cripple due to the high local intensity of the load or reaction. In this report three different web crippling prediction formulations are compared with experimental results from five different sources. It is found that these web crippling formulas show considera.ble differences and do not give satisfactory results consistently.

The stability of high-temperature fuel cell electrodes to their ambient environment is important for the long-term reliability of fuel cells. In this report the behavior of oxide electrode materials as a function of oxygen activity and temperature is considered. Models for the oxidation-reduction behavior of both p- and n-type oxides are presented. These models take into account the absorption and evolution of oxygen which take place as oxygen activity is varied. The resulting instability in electrical conductivity is explained as a consequence of changes in carrier concentration due to variability in ionic defect concentration. The proposed models are applied to …
Computer Aids That Writers Need, Ronald Thomas Kellogg
Computer Aids That Writers Need, Ronald Thomas Kellogg
Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
What problems are faced by office workers when they write documents? Are computer aids for writing available to meet their needs? These questions are answered here by: (1) describing recent research on writing processes, (2) listing various types of computer aids that either are currently marketed or are under investigation, and (3) reviewing studies that speak to the effectiveness of these aids. Numerous aids are available for problems that arise in planning, translating, and reviewing text. However, the few reported evaluation studies do not indicate that computer aids improve either the quality or the efficiency of writing. © 1985 Psychonomic …

A Parallel Array Scanning Algorithm, Ralph M. Butler, Ralph W. Wilkerson
A Parallel Array Scanning Algorithm, Ralph M. Butler, Ralph W. Wilkerson
Computer Science Technical Reports
Suppose we are given a vector X of n real numbers and we want to find the maximum sum found in any contiguous subvector of X. In Jon Bentley's article [l] on algorithm design and technique, a simple vector scanning problem and a series of progressively more efficient algorithms to solve this problem were discussed in some detail. Clearly, any algorithm must visit each location of X at least once and consequently a lower bound on the running time for problem is 0(n), which is in fact attainable as Bentley’s paper illustrates. However, the original motivation for this problem was …
Ada: A New Programming Language., Daniel C. St. Clair
Ada: A New Programming Language., Daniel C. St. Clair
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In an attempt to control defense software costs while maintaining system reliability, the DOD (Department of Defense) has sponsored the development of a new programming language, called Ada. While Ada supports many of the features found in Fortran and Pascal, it has additional features making it easier and more reliable to use in large complex engineering software systems. Currently, the DOD is requiring that many new defense software systems be written in Ada. The author reviews the history of Ada's development and examines the primary constructs of the language. The philosophy behind Ada program design is reviewed by designing and …
Self-Diffusion Of Water In Polycrystalline Smectic Liquid Crystals, Frank D. Blum, Alapat S. Padmanabhan, Rana Mohebbi
Self-Diffusion Of Water In Polycrystalline Smectic Liquid Crystals, Frank D. Blum, Alapat S. Padmanabhan, Rana Mohebbi
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The self-diffusion of water in between the bilayers of a smectic liquid crystal has been studied by the NMR pulsed field gradient method. It was found that, for smectic liquid crystals of ca. 75 wt % sodium 4-(1′-heptylnonyl)benzenesulfonate (SHBS)-25 wt % water, a diffusion coefficient of 8 × 10-11 m2/s parallel to the bilayers fit the data. Diffusion perpendicular to the bilayer was found to be much slower. Arrhenius behavior for the diffusion of water was found with an energy of activation of 20.2 ± 1.2 kJ/mol. This is higher than that found in bulk water or …

This study was conducted to: (1) Evaluate the effect of DO on cell yield in a fixed film reactor using 1,000 mg/L sucrose as a substrate; (2) evaluate the correlations of the biofilm thickness and density with DO and their resultant substrate stabilization rates; and (3) examine the response of biofilm communities as a result of DO and biofilm thickness changes. Data obtained from this study indicate that DO has only a minor effect on the cell yield. However, the thickness of aerobic biofilm is definitely related to DO, or thickness (mm) = (2.08 x DO)/(9.2 + DO). The biofilm …

Stress And Stress Management Among Geoscientists In The U.S. Petroleum Industry, August 1984: An Analysis, Ann M. Hagni
Masters Theses
"For the past three years, employment in the petroleum industry has declined significantly. This, along with many other factors, has created a potentially stressful situation similar to the petroleum industry recession of the late 1950s. A four page "Stress Questionnaire" mailed to 1000 geoscientists in the U.S. petroleum industry in August, 1984, concludes that geoscientists appear to be coping very well with their potentially stressful situation.
These geoscientists rated themselves considerably up-to-date with respect to their professional discipline and show a strong need to grow and develop. They are very personally involved in their work and at least some of …

The magnetic structure of Ni(CH2CO2NH2)2 2 H2O has been determined by the analysis of neutron-diffraction data from powder and single-crystal samples. Ni(CH2CO2NH2)2 2 H2O orders at a Néel temperature of 0.88 K. The magnetic structure consists of antiferromagnetically coupled layers having a canted ferromagnetic ordering within layers, with a moment of (2.33 ± 0.14)μB per Ni2+ ion. The magnetic unit cell is composed of two crystallographic unit cells, and contains four nickel atoms. The moment direction is not simply related …
Screening Design Test For Cyclic Voltammetric Evaluation Of Zinc Sulfate Electrolyte, R. K. Singh, Thomas J. O'Keefe
Screening Design Test For Cyclic Voltammetric Evaluation Of Zinc Sulfate Electrolyte, R. K. Singh, Thomas J. O'Keefe
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A statistical screening design program was conducted to determine the effects of certain operating parameters in the cyclic voltametric evaluation of zinc sulfate electrolyte. The variables studied included solution temperature, sulfuric acid and zinc concentrations, and scan rate. Solution temperature was found to be the most significant factor affecting the initial potential, followed by scan rate and zinc concentration. Based on screening design data, mathematical equations were developed to predict polarization behavior of addition-free zinc sulfate electrolytes. A few preliminary tests on the effect of impurities and organic additives, such as Sb(III) and glue, on potential, deposit morphology, and crystal …
