Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Iodine and Cl are enriched in soils in the vicinity of the Magmont and Buick lead mines near Bixby, southeastern Missouri. The enrichments, up to 5.6 ppm I and 305 ppm Cl, are against regional background of 1.26 ppm I and 41 ppm Cl. The area of highest I and Cl is thought to reflect a zone of base metal sulphide mineralization occurring about 400 m below the surface. Iodine and Cl are also enriched in soils immediately adjacent to a tailings pond, hence these elements would appear to be leached from this source. A zone of enhanced I values …

Evaluation Of Dye-Micelle Binding Constants Using Diffusion Sensitive Band Broadening Effects, Daniel W. Armstrong, R. A. Menges, S. M. Han Jan 1988

Evaluation Of Dye-Micelle Binding Constants Using Diffusion Sensitive Band Broadening Effects, Daniel W. Armstrong, R. A. Menges, S. M. Han

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The diffusion coefficients of small solutes can be significantly altered by the presence of association colloids such as micelles. A relationship is utilized that relates the diffusion coefficient of a solute to its partitioning or binding behavior to a micellar pseudo phase. The Taylor-Aris dispersion method was used to evaluate the diffusion coefficient of several dyes in the presence and absence of sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles. With this approach, all binding constants can be determined easily and reproducibly. The theory, experimental approach, and advantages of this technique are discussed. © 1988.

A Study Of Surface Dynamics Of Polymers. Ii. Investigation By Plasma Surface Implantation Of Fluorine–Containing Moieties, T. Yasuda, T. Okuno, K. Yoshida, H. Yasuda

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Macromolecules at the surface of a polymeric solid have considerable mobility, and the specific arrangement of functional groups of macromolecules at the surface is dictated by the environmental conditions in which the surface is placed. Consequently, the change of environmental conditions, such as immersion in water or placement in a biological surrounding, could cause a considerable degree of change in the surface characteristics of a polymer from those evaluated in the laboratory against ambient air. The mobile nature of a polymer surface can be investigated by surface‐implanting fluorine‐containing moieties, mainly—CF3, by the plasma implantation technique and following the disappearance and …

Is Central Station Photovoltaic Power Dispatchable?, Badrul H. Chowdhury, S. Rahman Jan 1988

Is Central Station Photovoltaic Power Dispatchable?, Badrul H. Chowdhury, S. Rahman

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An operational tool for integrating a photovoltaic system into the utility's generation mix is introduced. The development and implementation of a new approach-a dynamic rule-based (RB) dispatch algorithm-is presented. A Box-Jenkins time-series method is used to model the subhourly solar irradiance. The model is extended to yield forecast parameters which are then used to predict the photovoltaic output expected to occur at certain lead times coinciding with the economic dispatch intervals. The RB dispatch algorithm is introduced to operate as either a substitute for or an aid to the dispatch operator. It is concluded that results depend on the time …

Implementation Of Dsp Applications Using The At&T Dsp32 C Compiler And Application Library, J. Tow, J. Hartung, Steven L. Grant Jan 1988

Implementation Of Dsp Applications Using The At&T Dsp32 C Compiler And Application Library, J. Tow, J. Hartung, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The authors briefly introduce the C compiler and the application library for the DSP32 digital signal processor (DSP). Several examples are shown that illustrate the ease of writing C programs for some common filtering applications. In most cases, a small real-time penalty is incurred by using C, rather than assembly language coding. Programming in C, however, allows a dramatic improvement in programmer productivity in terms of implementing, testing, and maintaining an application

New Directions In Subband Coding, Y. Shoham, Steven L. Grant, N. Seshadri, R. V. Cox, S. R. Quackenbush, N. S. Jayant Jan 1988

New Directions In Subband Coding, Y. Shoham, Steven L. Grant, N. Seshadri, R. V. Cox, S. R. Quackenbush, N. S. Jayant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Two very different subband coders are described. The first is a modified dynamic bit-allocation-subband coder (D-SBC) designed for variable rate coding situations and easily adaptable to noisy channel environments. It can operate at rates as low as 12 kb/s and still give good quality speech. The second coder is a 16-kb/s waveform coder, based on a combination of subband coding and vector quantization (VQ-SBC). The key feature of this coder is its short coding delay, which makes it suitable for real-time communication networks. The speech quality of both coders has been enhanced by adaptive postfiltering. The coders have been implemented …

Dynamic Timoshenko Beam-Columns On Elastic Media, Franklin Y. Cheng, Chris P. Pantelides Jan 1988

Dynamic Timoshenko Beam-Columns On Elastic Media, Franklin Y. Cheng, Chris P. Pantelides

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Differential equations, stiffness coefficients, and fixed-end forces are formulated for a Timoshenko beam-column on an elastic foundation subjected to lateral time-dependent excitations and static axial loads. The theoretical formulation includes shear and bending deformations as well as rotatory inertia, with emphasis on two approaches. The two approaches differ in terms of the assumed shear component of the static axial load on the cross section. The first approach is based on the assumption that the shear component of the axial load is calculated from the total slope; in the second approach, the shear component of the axial load is calculated only …

Static Timoshenko Beam-Columns On Elastic Media, Franklin Y. Cheng, Chris P. Pantelides

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Two approaches are used to derive differential equations, stiffness coefficients, and fixed-end forces for the analysis of structural systems composed of Timoshenko beam-columns that may be supported by an elastic foundation. The analysis is for the evaluation of the critical static axial load and buckling mode-shapes of a structure with consideration of elastic media, bending, and shear deformations. The two approaches differ in terms of the assumed shear component of the static axial load on the cross section. The first approach is based on the assumption that the shear component of the axial load is calculated from the total slope, …

Improved Streamline-Generating Technique That Uses The Boundary (Integral) Element Method, Daopu Thompson Numbere, D. Tiab Jan 1988

Improved Streamline-Generating Technique That Uses The Boundary (Integral) Element Method, Daopu Thompson Numbere, D. Tiab

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The boundary element method (BEM) has been used to generate streamlines for homogeneous and sectionally homogeneous reservoirs having irregular boundaries. This technique is superior to earlier methods that use 'image wells' to simulate the reservoir boundary, especially for cases where the reservoir boundary is irregularly shaped. It has wider applicability to different kinds of reservoirs and eliminates the need for trial-and-error solutions. The errors caused by discretization and numerical approximation arise on and adjacent to the boundaries only, therefore the pressures and pressure gradients on which the streamlines are derived can be calculated with very high accuracy in the interior …

A Stochastic Model For Dielectric Breakdown In Thin Capacitors, D. A. Willming, Cheng-Hsiao Wu Jan 1988

A Stochastic Model For Dielectric Breakdown In Thin Capacitors, D. A. Willming, Cheng-Hsiao Wu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A nontrivial two-dimensional stochastic model for dielectric breakdown within a parallel plate capacitor is presented for the first time. The model has been used to determine geometric properties of parallel plate discharges. Comparisons are made between these properties and known fractal properties of electrostatic discharges within cylindrical geometries. As the spacing between the plates of a capacitor increases, the value of the fractal dimension of the associated discharge structure increases from the minimum value of unity and approaches the limiting value corresponding to the case of infinite spacing. For any given spacing, this fractal exponent is equal to the exponent …

"The purpose of this investigation was to develop a samarium containing aluminosilicate glass with properties suitable for use in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Microspheres made from these compositions would be neutron activated to produce radioactive Sm-153 which has beta-particle energies suitable for treating rheumatoid arthritis as well as appropriate gamma-ray emission for nuclear imaging. The properties of Sm2O3 · AI2O3 · SiO2 glasses containing 10 to 25 mole% Sm2O3 were evaluated as a function of composition. The density, refractive index, thermal expansion coefficient, and microhardness increased with increasing Sm …

Processing And Characterization Of Ceramic Fiber Reinforced Porous Matrix Composites, Wen-Chiang Tu Jan 1988

Processing And Characterization Of Ceramic Fiber Reinforced Porous Matrix Composites, Wen-Chiang Tu

Masters Theses

"The development of ceramic fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites has been shown to be a promising approach for high toughness ceramic materials. The purpose of this work was to develop a new ceramic matrix composite(CMC) system based on a porous mullitic matrix reinforced with ceramic fibers. Unidirectional alligned fiber reinforced mullitic matrix composites were fabricated by a filament winding process. Prepregs were laminated and thermal processed in air. SEM fractographs of the composites were characterized and related to the observed load-deflection behaviors under 3-point flexure. The fracture surface expositions changed from extensive fiber tear-out to limited fiber pull-out as the …

Fabrication And Mechanical Property Analysis Of A Transparent, Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Matrix Composite, James R. Olson Jan 1988

Fabrication And Mechanical Property Analysis Of A Transparent, Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Matrix Composite, James R. Olson

Masters Theses

"A "transparent” composite was produced by reinforcing poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with unidirectional borosilicate glass fibers. Composites with 40 volume percent fiber had a modulus of rupture of 600 MPa which is six times greater than that of pure PMMA. Young's modulus for the same composite was 18 MPA which is nine times greater than the 2 MPa measured for pure PMMA. Work of fracture was 110 kJ/m2 or more than double the 45 kJ/m2 required to fracture pure PMMA. The optical transmission of the composite with 30 volume percent fiber was approximately 40 percent through a 10 mm …

A Three-Dimensional Bistatic Radar Target Position Measurement Error Model, Robert Kenneth Lynn Jan 1988

A Three-Dimensional Bistatic Radar Target Position Measurement Error Model, Robert Kenneth Lynn

Masters Theses

"The accuracy of target position measurements for an airborne bistatic radar receiver are calculated. Two methods of information measurement are utilized, both of which assume cooperative synchronization between the transmitter and receiver. Gimbal angle errors are incorporated into both methods. The size and orientation of the error ellipsoid about the true target position is found. Loci of constant circular error probable are plotted in a horizontal plane of interest"--Abstract, page ii.

Influence Of Prior Deformation On Structure And Properties Of Heat Treated Aluminum Casting Alloy, Chungwei Hsia Jan 1988

Influence Of Prior Deformation On Structure And Properties Of Heat Treated Aluminum Casting Alloy, Chungwei Hsia

Masters Theses

"A1 356 alloy is extensively used for a wide variety of casting applications. The structure is composed of primary dendrites and eutectic silicon formed during the eutectic reaction. It has long been recognized that the shape of the eutectic silicon significantly affects the ductility of the alloy. Traditionally, the morphology of the silicon is changed by certain chemical and/or thermal processes to improve the ductility. Mechanically deforming the castings to "modify" the shape of silicon has been shown by this research to be an effective alternative method to improve the spheroidization rate of eutectic silicon during heat treatment. The best …

Deduction Of A Functional Dependency From A Set Of Functional Dependencies, James M. Richardson Jan 1988

Deduction Of A Functional Dependency From A Set Of Functional Dependencies, James M. Richardson

Masters Theses

"This paper describes an algorithm called the Deduction Tracing Algorithm (DTA) which utilizes basic properties of functional dependencies from database systems and a modification of a tree search algorithm from artificial intelligence. The algorithm takes a set of functional dependencies, F, along with a specific functional dependency L→R as input and produces a list of functional dependencies from F that can be used to deduce L→R. The resulting algorithm is easily automated to provide relational database users with a tool for organizing their queries"--Abstract, page iii.

The Role Of Term Symmetry In E-Unification And E-Completion, Blayne E. Mayfield Jan 1988

The Role Of Term Symmetry In E-Unification And E-Completion, Blayne E. Mayfield

Doctoral Dissertations

“A major portion of the work and time involved in completing an incomplete set of reductions using an E-completion procedure such as the one described by Knuth and Bendix [KB70] or its extension to associative-commutative equational theories as described by Peterson and Stickel [PS81] is spent calculating critical pairs and subsequently testing them for coherence. A pruning technique which removes from consideration those critical pairs that represent redundant or superfluous information, either before, during, or after their calculation, can therefore make a marked difference in the run time and efficiency of an E-completion procedure to which it is applied.

The …

Complete Sets Of Reductions Modulo A Class Of Equational Theories Which Generate Infinite Congruence Classes, Timothy B. Baird Jan 1988

Complete Sets Of Reductions Modulo A Class Of Equational Theories Which Generate Infinite Congruence Classes, Timothy B. Baird

Doctoral Dissertations

"In this paper we present a generalization of the Knuth-Bendix procedure for generating a complete set of reductions modulo an equational theory. Previous such completion procedures have been restricted to equational theories which generate finite congruence classes. The distinguishing feature of this work is that we are able to generate complete sets of reductions for some equational theories which generate infinite congruence classes. In particular, we are able to handle the class of equational theories which contain the associative, commutative, and identity laws for one or more operators.

We first generalize the notion of rewriting modulo an equational theory to …
