Fault-Tolerant Distributed Database Lock Managers Formally Derived From Program Verification, Hanan Lutfiyya, Martina Schollmeyer, Bruce M. Mcmillin Mar 1992

Fault-Tolerant Distributed Database Lock Managers Formally Derived From Program Verification, Hanan Lutfiyya, Martina Schollmeyer, Bruce M. Mcmillin

Computer Science Technical Reports

This paper presents a system for formally deriving executable assertions that can be evaluated in the faulty distributed computing environment. Since executable assertions for fault tolerance need to show that a program meets its specification and, since program verification is the process of formally showing that a program satisfies some particular properties with respect to its specification, we use program verification as a basis for derivation. It is well known that in the sequential computing environment the assertions from a program verification proof outline may be translated directly into executable assertions. However, due to the lack of global state information …

The Effect Of Flange Restraint On Web Crippling Strength, Bhavnesh H. Bhakta, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu Mar 1992

The Effect Of Flange Restraint On Web Crippling Strength, Bhavnesh H. Bhakta, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

PREFACE When considering the web crippling strength of a cold-formed steel member, the current edition of the AISI Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members does not distinguish between the behavior of a member having its flanges attached to a support member, and a member not attached to its support. To enhance the industry and design professional's understanding of web crippling, a pilot study was initiated at the University of Missouri-Rolla to explore the influence of flange attachment. The financial assistance for this research was provided by the Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) and the American Iron and …

A Lower-Bound For The Error-Variance Of Maximum-Likelihood Delay Estimates Of Discontinuous Pulse Waveforms, Kurt Louis Kosbar, Andreas D. Polydoros Mar 1992

A Lower-Bound For The Error-Variance Of Maximum-Likelihood Delay Estimates Of Discontinuous Pulse Waveforms, Kurt Louis Kosbar, Andreas D. Polydoros

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new lower bound is developed for the error variance of maximum-likelihood time-delay estimation when the received signal is a square pulse, corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise. The bound is generated by combining concepts previously developed for a special class of stochastic processes, induced by the signal model. For moderate signal to noise ratios, the new bound is significantly tighter than previously known ones.

Angular-Differential Cross Sections For H(2p) Formation In Intermediate-Energy Proton-Helium Collisions, Denver G. Seely, S. W. Bross, A. D. Gaus, John Wm Edwards, David R. Schultz, Timothy Gay, John T. Park, Jerry Peacher Feb 1992

Angular-Differential Cross Sections For H(2p) Formation In Intermediate-Energy Proton-Helium Collisions, Denver G. Seely, S. W. Bross, A. D. Gaus, John Wm Edwards, David R. Schultz, Timothy Gay, John T. Park, Jerry Peacher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Angular-differential cross sections for charge transfer with simultaneous emission of a photon in collisions of protons with helium atoms have been measured. The incident proton energies were 25, 50, and 100 keV and the center-of-mass scattering angles were between 0 and 2.0 mrad. In the experiment, hydrogen atoms that scattered through an angle θ were detected in coincidence with photons emitted perpendicular to the scattering plane with a wavelength between 1140 and 1400 Å. Differential cross sections for capture into the 2p state of the hydrogen atom were determined from the variation in the coincidence signal with θ. The experimental …

Mössbauer And Neutron Diffraction Studies Of Y₂(Fe₁₋ₓmnₓ)₁₄B, Oran Allan Pringle, Gaya Kanishka Marasinghe, Gary J. Long, William Joseph James, William B. Yelon, Decai Xie, Fernande Grandjean

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have used Mössbauer spectroscopy and neutron diffraction to study a series of Y2(Fe1-xMnx)1 4B samples in the composition range from x=0.0 to 0.4. Y 2(Fe0.6Mn0.4)14B is paramagnetic at both room temperature and 85 K. The iron quadrupole splitting in this paramagnetic compound allows us to place an upper limit on the quadrupole shift in the magnetic Y2(Fe1-xMnx) 14B alloys. Refinement of Y2(Fe 1-xMnx)14B neutron diffraction data have been used to …

Determining The Chemical Composition Of Cloud Condensation Nuclei, Allen L. Williams, Jane E. Rothert, Kent E. Mcclure, Darryl J. Alofs, Donald E. Hagen, Daniel R. White, A. R. Hopkins, Max B. Trueblood

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This second progress report describes the status of the project one and one-half years after the start. The goal of the project is to develop the instrumentation to collect cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) in sufficient amounts to determine their chemical composition, and to survey the CCN composition in different climates through a series of field measurements. Our approach to CCN collection is to first form droplets on the nuclei under simulated cloud humidity conditions, which is the only known method of identifying CCN from the background aerosol. Under cloud chamber conditions, the droplets formed become larger than the surrounding aerosol, …

Fault-Tolerant Concurrent Branch And Bound Algorithm Derived From Program Verification, Hanan Lutfiyya, Aggie Sun, Bruce M. Mcmillin Jan 1992

Fault-Tolerant Concurrent Branch And Bound Algorithm Derived From Program Verification, Hanan Lutfiyya, Aggie Sun, Bruce M. Mcmillin

Computer Science Technical Reports

The process of showing that a program satisfies some particular properties with respect to its specification is called program verification. Axiomatic semantics is a verification method that makes assertions describing properties about the states of the program. There exists a transformation from the assertions of the verification proof of a program to executable assertions. These executable assertions may be embedded in the program to create a fault-tolerant program. While this approach has been applied to the sequential programming environment, the distributed programming environment presents special challenges. This paper focuses on applying concurrent programming axiomatic proof systems to generate executable assertions …

Boundedness And Periodic Solutions In Infinite Delay Systems, Roger H. Hering Jan 1992

Boundedness And Periodic Solutions In Infinite Delay Systems, Roger H. Hering

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Liapunov methods are used to give conditions ensuring that solutions of infinite delay equations are uniformly bounded and uniformly ultimately bounded with respect to unbounded (Cg) initial function spaces; and the connection to proving existence of periodic solutions is examined. Several examples illustrate the application of these results, especially to integrodifferential equations. © 1992.

A Divide And Conquer Ring Embedding Scheme On Hypercubes With Efficient Recovery Ability, Junlin Liu, Bruce M. Mcmillin Jan 1992

A Divide And Conquer Ring Embedding Scheme On Hypercubes With Efficient Recovery Ability, Junlin Liu, Bruce M. Mcmillin

Computer Science Technical Reports

The hypercube architecture has been considered a useful host to simulate many networks. However, when processors on hypercubes become faulty, the simulated topologies may no longer be valid and, thus, the system needs to invoke some reconfiguration algorithm to recover the topology. The efficiency of this reconfiguration depends heavily on the initial embedding method. This paper proposes a general scheme based on the idea of divide and conquer that efficiently embeds even length rings on hypercubes with small expansion and recovery cost. It is shown that the average expansion for the proposed scheme is 1.58, and the average number of …

Fixed Point Theorems For D-Complete Topological Spaces I, Troy L. Hicks

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Generalizations of Banach's fixed point theorem are proved for a large class of non-metric spaces. These include d-complete symmetric (semi-metric) spaces and complete quasi-metric spaces. The distance function used need not be symmetric and need not satisfy the triangular inequality. © 1992, Hindawi Publishing Corporation. All rights reserved.

Prediction Intervals, Based On Ranges And Waiting Times, For An Exponential Distribution, Laura Colangelo, Jagdish K. Patel

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article contains two prediction intervals applicable to a 2-parameter as well as a 1-parameter exponential distribution. One can be used to predict a future sample range on the basis of an observed sample range. Appropriate prediction factors are tabulated. The other can be used to predict a waiting time between two future successive failures on the basis of an observed waiting time between two previous successive failures. © 1992 IEEE

Sensor Signal Analysis By Neural Networks For Surveillance In Nuclear Reactors, Shahla Keyvan Jan 1992

Sensor Signal Analysis By Neural Networks For Surveillance In Nuclear Reactors, Shahla Keyvan

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The application of neural networks as a tool for reactor diagnostics is examined here. Reactor pump signals utilized in a wear-out monitoring system developed for early detection of the degradation of a pump shaft [17] are analyzed as a semi-benchmark test to study the feasibility of neural networks for monitoring and surveillance in nuclear reactors. The Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART 2 and ART 2-A) paradigm of neural networks is applied in this study. The signals are collected signals as well as generated signals simulating the wear progress. The wear-out monitoring system applies noise analysis techniques and is capable of distinguishing …

Constrained Completion: Theory, Implementation, And Results, Daniel Patrick Murphy Jan 1992

Constrained Completion: Theory, Implementation, And Results, Daniel Patrick Murphy

Doctoral Dissertations

"The Knuth-Bendix completion procedure produces complete sets of reductions but can not handle certain rewrite rules such as commutativity. In order to handle such theories, completion procedure were created to find complete sets of reductions modulo an equational theory. The major problem with this method is that it requires a specialized unification algorithm for the equational theory. Although this method works well when such an algorithm exists, these algorithms are not always available and thus alternative methods are needed to attack problems. A way of doing this is to use a completion procedure which finds complete sets of constrained reductions. …

Effect Of Ultrasound On Acidified Brine Leaching Of Double-Kiln Treated Eaf Dust, J. A. Barrera-Godinez, Thomas J. O'Keefe, Johh L. Watson Jan 1992

Effect Of Ultrasound On Acidified Brine Leaching Of Double-Kiln Treated Eaf Dust, J. A. Barrera-Godinez, Thomas J. O'Keefe, Johh L. Watson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The U.S. steel industry produces approximately 500,000 tons/year of electric arc furnace (EAF) dust, which is classified as a hazardous waste. Increasing disposal costs of these dusts have encouraged studies to investigate treatment processes to render the material non-hazardous, and to possibly recover metal values. This research project was designed to examine the hydrometallurgical recovery of zinc from EAF dusts that have been treated by a double kiln fuming process. The test work consisted essentially of acidified brine leaching of the pelletized calcine to determine the influence of traditional conditions, such as acid concentration, temperature and agitation, plus the application …

Monte Carlo Study Of A Simple Model Bulk-Ice-Ih System: P-T Melting Behavior At Constant Volume, K. Han, Barbara N. Hale Jan 1992

Monte Carlo Study Of A Simple Model Bulk-Ice-Ih System: P-T Melting Behavior At Constant Volume, K. Han, Barbara N. Hale

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

An NVT Metropolis Monte Carlo computer simulation is used to examine the P-T behavior of a constant-density model periodic ice-Ih sample near melting. The ice unit cell with density 0.904 g/cm3 consists of 192 rigid water molecules interacting via the revised central-force potentials (RSL2) of Stillinger and Rahman [J. Chem. Phys. 68, 666 (1978)] with a cutoff. Intramolecular parameters are determined from a minimization of the total potential energy of the ice-Ih structure at 0 K. In the P-T plot, emergence of the liquid-solid coexistence region is signaled by a change in sign of dP/dT (when expansion occurs upon …

X‐Ray Powder Diffraction Structural Phase‐Transition Study Of La(Cr1‐Xmnx)O3 (X = 0 To 0.25) Using The Rietveld Method Of Analysis, Scott A. Howard, Jen‐Kuan ‐K Yau, Harlan U. Anderson Jan 1992

X‐Ray Powder Diffraction Structural Phase‐Transition Study Of La(Cr1‐Xmnx)O3 (X = 0 To 0.25) Using The Rietveld Method Of Analysis, Scott A. Howard, Jen‐Kuan ‐K Yau, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The La(Cr1‐xMnx)O3 (x = 0 to 0.25) system exhibited a displacive phase transformation from an orthorhombic to a rhombohedral structure at temperatures ranging from about 256°C at x= 0 to 305°C at x= 0.25. The Rietveld method of X‐ray analysis was used to determine structural characteristics and to assay phase concentrations when multiple phases were present. Indications were that the Mn ions on the B site affected the transition temperature through an ionic size effect; i.e., Mn3+, with a larger ionic size than Cr3+, increased the transition temperature while the presence …
