Procase: A Prototype Of Intelligent Case-Based Process Planning System With Simulation Environment, Hao Yang, Wen F. Lu
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An intelligent case-based process planning system with interactive graphic simulation environment, PROCASE, is developed lo demonstrate an integrated methodology of case-based process planning system. In PROCASE, both the mechanical part features and the machining operations are represented with a frame-based scheme. PROCASE contains a retriever, a modifier, a simulator and a repairer. It distinguishes itself from traditional rule-based process planning systems by representing the process planning knowledge through previous process planning cases instead of production rules. It therefore can overcome some problems in the traditional rule-based expert systems. PROCASE currently resides in IRIS Indigo workstation. With a user-friendly graphic environment, …

Recent published work in the area of magnetic refrigeration reports on its potential for greater efficiency and high reliability. This paper presents an exergy analysis of a three-stage active magnetic regenerative (AMR) hydrogen liquefier which cools a hydrogen gas stream at 77 K and 1 atm to hydrogen liquid at 20 K. Ortho - para conversion of hydrogen is accomplished in a heat exchanger employing a 10 atm helium fluid that cycles in the refrigerator. The performance of the system is described in terms of the cooling capacity and exergy losses as functions of the magnetic material type, magnetic bed …

Observations On Higher-Order Beam Theory, A. Bhimaraddi, K. Chandrashekhara
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A parabolic shear-deformation beam theory assuming a higher-order variation for axial displacement has been recently presented. In this theory, the axial displacement variation can be selected so that it results in a suitable admissible transverse shear-strain variation across the depth of the beam. This paper examines several transverse shear-strain variations that can go with the aforementioned higher-order theory. Apart from the usual simple parabolic variation, six other shear-strain variations are considered: the sinusoidal variation, cubic, quartic, quintic, and sixth-order polynomials. All these variations for transverse shear-strain satisfy the requirement that the shear strain be zero at the extreme fibers (z …

A detailed small-angle neutron scattering study of the vortex lattice in a single crystal of YBa2Cu3O7 was made for a field of 0.5 tesla inclined at angles between 0 and 80 degrees to the crystalline c axis. The vortex lattice is triangular for all angles, and for angles less than or equal to 70 degrees its orientation adjusts itself to maximize the pinning energy to densely and highly regularly spaced twin planes. These observations have important implications for the microscopic flux-pinning mechanism, and hence for the critical current achievable in YBa2Cu3O7. For large angles (about 80 degrees) the vortex lattice …

(CeO2)0.8(CSO) has been suggested for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) applications, because of its higher electrical conductivity and chemical stability, compared to other ceria-based materials. However, CSO is difficult to densify under conditions compatible with other SOFC components. A thin film synthesis technique has been developed for the fabrication of dense CSO films from precursor solutions at relatively low temperatures. Dense, smooth, and homogeneous films were obtained on Pt, single-crystal Si, and La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3 (LSCF) substrates by spin-coating a polymeric precursor and subsequent heat-treatment. Crystallization of the film …

Trapping-To-Percolation Transition In The Hopping Diffusion Of Substitutionally Disordered Solids With A Binary Energy Distribution, Paul Ernest Parris, B. D. Bookout
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We consider charge carriers that undergo nearest-neighbor hopping among the sites of a binary random lattice, each site of which is associated with one of two possible energies E1 or E2. A general and recently observed feature of this problem not predicted by previous treatments of disordered hopping models is a crossover between trap-limited conduction and percolation. We introduce new energy-projected equations of motion whose solutions reveal the deep conductivity minimum associated with this phenomenon, and compare the results predicted to numerical simulations.

In order to initiate ignition and substantial energy yield from an inertial confinement fusion target (ICF), a light-ion pulse of ~700 TW peak power and 15-20 ns duration is required. The preconceptual design presented provides this power. The HERMES-III technology of linear inductive voltage addition in a self-magnetically insulated transmission line (MITL) is utilized to generate the 25-36 MV peak voltage needed for lithium ion beams. The 15-20 MA ion current is achieved by utilizing many accelerating modules in parallel. The lithium ion beams are produced in two-stage extraction diodes. To provide the two separate voltage pulses required by the …

In an effort to better understand the educational experiences and professional issues facing women in these fields, a survey of women alumnae was conducted. Respondents seemed fairly pleased with the education they received and were heavily influenced by personal aspects of the campus. Relationships with faculty members were described as their most beneficial and detrimental experiences. They particularly liked opportunities to apply their technical knowledge but did not believe there were enough opportunities for application. The need for more female role models and importance of involvement in student organizations were cited by many of the respondents. Self‐confidence and good communication …

We report investigations of one- and two-electron processes in the collisions of 0.9-keV/u to 60-keV/u (vp=0.19-1.55 a.u.) Ar16+ ions with He targets. The cross sections for these processes were measured by observing the final charges of the Ar ions and the recoiling target ions in coincidence. The average Q values for the capture channels were determined by measuring the longitudinal momenta of the recoiling target ions. Single capture (SC) is the dominant process and is relatively independent of the projectile energy. The two-electron transfer-ionization (TI) process is the next largest and slowly increases with projectile energy. The Q values …

The longitudinal momentum transfer to the recoil ion in collisions of 1 MeV/amu bare F ions with Ne are resolved for final charge states of both projectile and recoil ions. We observe the recoil to be thrown backwards in electron-capture events, reflecting the physical impact of the electron translation factor. The size of the momentum transfer is in agreement with classical trajectory Monte Carlo calculations for low charge state recoil ions but not for high charge state recoil ions. © 1993 The American Physical Society.

Strong Velocity Dependence Of Electron Capture In Collisions Between Aligned Na*(3p) And He2+, A. R. Schlatmann, R. Hoekstra, R. Morgenstern, Ronald E. Olson, J. Pascale
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
By analyzing spectra of emitted photons, we have studied state-selective electron capture in collisions of He2+ on aligned Na*(3p) atoms that span the "velocity-matching" energy between projectile and target electron. We find a strong dependence of the capture cross sections on the Na*(3p) orbital alignment, i.e., aligned perpendicular or parallel to the ion beam direction. The preference changes from perpendicular to parallel at a velocity close to the classical orbital velocity of the 3p electron. Classical-trajectory Monte Carlo calculations reproduce this striking energy dependence. © 1993 The American Physical Society.

Azimuthal Angular Dependence Of Recoil-Ion And Electron Emission In 0.5-Mev P + He Collisions, R. Dörner, J. Ullrich, Ronald E. Olson, O. Jagutzki, H. Schmidt-Böcking

Measurements and n-body classical-trajectory Monte Carlo calculations are presented for the dependence of recoil-ion emission on the azimuthal angle between a projectile and a recoil ion. From the measured momenta of the projectile and the recoil ion, the dependence of the electron emission on the azimuthal angle between projectile and electron is deduced. The recoil ions are found to be emitted to the opposite direction of the scattered projectile only for scattering angles larger than 1 mrad, while for smaller scattering angles, the momentum of the emitted electron results in a broad azimuthal angular distribution of the recoil ions. For …

An Application-Oriented Approach To Distributed Error-Detecting Branch & Bound, Aggie Y. Sun, Hanan Lutfiyya, Bruce Mcmillin
Computer Science Technical Reports
An important aspect which is often overlooked in software _design of distributed environments is that of fault tolerance. Many methodologies in the past have attempted to provide fault tolerance efficiently, but have never been successful at eliminating explicit time and space redundancy. One approach is the Application-Oriented Fault Tolerance Paradigm, which provides fault tolerance by examining the behavior and properties of the application and deriving executable assertions for the detection of faults. Previous work has demonstrated the feasibility of the application-oriented fault tolerance paradigm for various applications. However, the executable assertions were guided by the natural constraints of the problem. …

Design Of Automotive Structural Components Using High Strength Sheet Steels Influence Of Strain Rate On The Mechanical Properties Of Sheet Steels And Structural Performance Of Cold-Formed Steel Members, Chi-Ling Pan, Wei-Wen Yu
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
The current design criteria for effective design width being used in the AISI Automotive Steel Design Manual 1 for the design of cold-formed steel members are based on tests under static loading condition. The primary objective of this investigation was to study the validity of these effective design width formulas for members subjected to dynamic loads. This report presents a detailed description of an experimental study. Selected steels with nominal yield strengths ranging from 25 ksi to 100 ksi were uniaxially tested under different strain rates. In order to study the structural behavior and strength of cold-formed steel members having …

The ANEX facility has been developed to allow nearly real-time comparisons of analysis results with experimental data gathered on small-scale structural models. ANEX has been used successfully for in-class demonstrations, student-designed experiments, and comprehensive design/build competitions in an introductory structural analysis course at the University of Missouri-Rolla. An expert system is now being developed to guide ANEX users and to act as a trouble-shooter and advisor in the event that analytical and experimental results do not correlate acceptably well. ANEX, using only simple, small-scale model structures, is able to enrich structural engineering instruction by introducing students to the sophisticated capabilities …
Calculation Of The Residual Resistivity And The Thermoelectric Power Of Sp Impurities In Silver, Thomas Vojta, Ingrid Mertig, Rudolf Zeller
Calculation Of The Residual Resistivity And The Thermoelectric Power Of Sp Impurities In Silver, Thomas Vojta, Ingrid Mertig, Rudolf Zeller
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present ab initio calculations for the residual resistivity and the thermopower of sp impurities in silver. The calculations are based on density-functional theory and the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Greens-function method. The linearized Boltzmann equation is solved by means of a Fermi-surface harmonic expansion to calculate the residual resistivity, taking into account the anisotropic electronic properties of the dilute alloy. The thermoelectric power was obtained from the energy dependence of the residual resistivity by means of Mott's formula. The results are in satisfying agreement with highly precise experimental results and confirm experimentally obtained deviations from a quadratic dependence on the valence difference …

Fourteen types of palynodebris have been identified in Middle Miocene reservoir sediments from the Niger Delta. They include palynomorphs, cuticle, parenchyma, resins, black debris, woody fragments and degraded components. The palynodebris types were interpreted by Principal Components Analysis and Average Linkage Cluster Analysis. Four assemblages of samples emerged and they have been grouped into two palynofacies associations because of their correlation with mudstone and muddy heterolithic lithofacies and sandstone lithofacies, respectively. The significant palynodebris components are black debris, parenchyma, resins and amorphous organic matter. The size, shape and texture of all the components were integrated with sedimentological features, palynomorph and …

Electron polarimeters based on Mott scattering are extensively used in atomic and molecular, solid state, nuclear, and high-energy physics. This use stems from the increasing realization that much additional information concerning many physical processes can be obtained through spin-dependent measurements. In this review we discuss the basic physics and application of Mott polarimetry. A number of different Mott polarimeter designs are described that illustrate the wide range of operating energies (10 eV-1 MeV) and geometries that can be used in such instruments. The calibration of Mott polarimeters is discussed together with the potential sources of systematic error that can arise …

In standard Mott electron polarimetry using thin gold film targets, extrapolation procedures must be used to reduce the experimentally measured asymmetries A to the values they would have for scattering from single atoms. These extrapolations involve the dependence of A on either the gold film thickness t or the maximum detected electron energy loss in the target ΔE. Using a concentric cylindrical-electrode Mott polarimeter, we have studied and compared these two types of extrapolations over the electron energy range 20-100 keV. The potential systematic errors which can result from such procedures are analyzed in detail, particularly with regard to the …

An Improved Characterization Of 1-Step Recoverable Embeddings: Rings In Hypercubes, Junlin Liu, Thomas J. Sager, Bruce M. Mcmillin
Computer Science Technical Reports
An embedding is said to be 1-step recoverable if any single fault in the embedding can be recovered in one reconfiguration step. In this paper we present a heuristic approach to construct such 1-step recoverable embeddings. We show that to embed a k (even) length ring in ad-cube, where 6 < = k < = 3/4 2d and d < = 3, our scheme will guarantee finding a 1-step recoverable embedding, provided such an embedding exists. Compared to other previously proposed schemes, our scheme achieves much better results. A sufficient condition for the non-existence of 1-step recoverable embeddings for embedding rings of length > 3/4 2d in d-cubes is also given.
