Formation Of Plasma Polymer Thin Films Containing Reactive Metal Chelate Sites, J. M. Skelly, Nicholas C. Morosoff, V. T. Stannett, A. L. Crumbliss
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We report here the successful incorporation of chemically active Co2+ and Ni2+ centers into plasma polymer thin films. Metal center incorporation was accomplished by simultaneous plasma polymerization of sublimed Co2+ or Ni2+ complexes with gaseous "comonomers" or Ar. The metal complexes include N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-phenylenediaminecobalt(II) (CoSalophen), N,N′-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediaminecobalt(II) (CoSalen), N,N′-bis(3-fluorosalicylidene)ethylenediaminecobalt(II) (CoFluomine), meso-tetraphenylporphyrinatocobalt(II) (CoTPP), meso-tetraphenylporphine (TPP), and meso-tetraphenylporphyrinatonickel(II) (NiTPP). Modification to the metal complex structure was observed by IR and UV-vis spectroscopies. IR spectra of plasma polymer films containing the Schiff's base complexes, prepared using Ar as a carrier gas, contained a band at 2190 cm−1, which can be attributed to nitrile group formation, …

The Spatial Evolution Of Particles Diffusing In The Presence Of Randomly Placed Traps, David H. Dunlap, Randall A. Laviolette, Paul Ernest Parris
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The evolution of a particle undergoing a continuous-time random walk in the presence of randomly placed imperfectly absorbing traps is studied. At long times, the spatial probability distribution becomes strongly localized in a sequence of trap-free regions. The subsequent intermittent transfer of the survival probability from small trap-free regions to larger trap-free regions is described as a time-directed variable range hopping among localized eigenstates in the Lifshitz tail. An asymptotic expression for the configurational average of the spatial distribution of surviving particles is obtained based on this description. The distribution is an exponential function of distance which expands superdiffusively, with …

Using recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy (rims), we have measured differential cross sections for the production of highly charged Ne ions in collisions with 10 MeV Fs+ as a function of the recoil-ion transverse momentum and charge state. In addition, the outgoing projectiles were charge-state analyzed and detected in coincidence with the Ne recoil-ions. Thus, different reaction channels like direct ionization, single- and double-electron capture by the projectile could be separated. The recoil-ion transverse momentum p£ was determined with an accuracy comparable to a projectile scattering angle resolution of 2.5 x 10"5 rad. The experimental data are compared to results of classical …

A Pipeline Implementation Of Lu-Decomposition On A Hypercube, Scott Thibault, Lenore Mullin
A Pipeline Implementation Of Lu-Decomposition On A Hypercube, Scott Thibault, Lenore Mullin
Computer Science Technical Reports
This paper presents a method of performing LU-Decomposition on a hypercube. The algorithm is constructed similar to the way a pipeline would be used in hardware or on a systolic array processor. Using this method eliminates the need to broadcast data to all the processors at each iteration of the algorithm. Communication takes place at each iteration but since we are using a pipeline model, the communication is between each processor and the next processor in the pipeline. On the hypercube this communication can be done in parallel by using the Gray code ordering to embed a ld mesh (pipeline) …

The PRAM model has been shown to be an optimal design for emulating both loos and tightly coupled multiprocessors for unit time operations. Extensions to this design employ software pipelining on a network of homogeneous workstations. Partitioning array data structures and pipelining groups of partitions to processors can minimize latency and bottlenecking on distributted message passing multiprocessing architectures. Our previous paper developed a general message passing design that was conjectured to port to a CMS and scale to more processors connected via TCPIP protocol. This paper presents the results of of our ported and scaled designs. We have indeed developed …

Efficient Run-Time Assurance In Distributed Systems Through Selection Of Executable Assertions, Martina Schollmeyer, Bruce Mcmillin
Efficient Run-Time Assurance In Distributed Systems Through Selection Of Executable Assertions, Martina Schollmeyer, Bruce Mcmillin
Computer Science Technical Reports
Run-time assurance of a distributed system can be obtained by comparing, at run-time, the behavior of the program with the expected behavior described in the program's specification. Executable assertions, embedded into the program code, can determine when there are discrepancies, due to processor failures, between actual and expected behavior. Thus, there is no global monitoring scheme but processes will check each other.
A non-faulty process will always perform correct computation. It can detect errors in other processes after receiving information from them and checking it against expected values by using executable assertions. In order to efficiently check programs at run-time, …

Elimination Of Supply Harmonics: An Evolution Of Current Compensation And Active Filtering Methods, Stephen L. Clark, P. Famouri, W. L. Cooley
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The price of the extensive use of power electronic devices is becoming clear: increasing harmonic "pollution." This survey takes a brief look at background information related to harmonics, including their sources, effects, and characteristics. Then, the evolution of the harmonics elimination approaches of current compensation and active filtering, which are becoming more feasible due to research and technological improvements, are discussed in order to give some insight into the directions that research is taking.

Synthesis And Characterization Of Ysz Thin Film Electrolytes, C. C. Chen, M. M. Nasrallah, Harlan U. Anderson
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Dense, homogeneous and crack-free thin films (0.2-2 microm in thickness) of (ZrO2)0.84(YO1.5)0.16 (YSZ) were deposited on porous or dense substrates, at temperatures not exceeding 600°C, using a solution-deposition technique. The structural evolution and microstructure of the deposited films were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Raman spectroscopy revealed the presence of fine-grain cubic YSZ at annealing temperatures as low as 600°C. Grain growth occurred at higher temperatures as detected by atomic force microscopy (AFM). ac impedance spectroscopy was used to study the electrical characteristics of the YSZ films as a function of temperature. The ionic conductivity …

A Stochastic One-Dimensional Image Model Based On Occluding Object Images, John A. Stuller
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This Paper Provides New Insights into the Formation of One-Dimensional (Line-Scan) Image Autocorrelation Functions. We Model a Line Scan as a Composition of Individual Object-Images that Have Random Positions, Widths and Intensities and that Occlude One Another. We Derive the Autocorrelation Function of This Model as a Function of Object-Image Width and Intensity Distributions. We Show that Any Assumption Regarding the Form of the Autocorrelation Function Places a Constraint on Object-Image Width and Intensity Distributions and We Derive the Object-Image Width Distribution Associated with the Widely Used Symmetric-Exponential Autocovariance Model.

Malignant melanoma is the deadliest form of all skin cancers. Approximately 32,000 new cases of malignant melanoma were diagnosed in 1991 in the United States, with approximately 80% of patients expected to survive 5 years. Fortunately, if detected early, even malignant melanoma may be treated successfully, Thus, in recent years, there has been rising interest in the automated detection and diagnosis of skin cancer, particularly malignant melanoma. Here, the authors present a novel neural network approach for the automated separation of melanoma from 3 benign categories of tumors which exhibit melanoma-like characteristics. The approach uses discriminant features, based on tumor …
The Application Of Markov State Probabilities In Developing Artificially Intelligent Managerial Strategies: A Case Study Based On Major League Baseball, Arnold Vincent Arconati
The Application Of Markov State Probabilities In Developing Artificially Intelligent Managerial Strategies: A Case Study Based On Major League Baseball, Arnold Vincent Arconati
Doctoral Dissertations
"Baseball is a very large industry that influences the lives and financial assets of millions of people.
Many baseball analysts estimate that even the best Major League player can increase his team's expected number of yearly wins by only 3 or 4 games. In 1993 Bobby Bonilla, a New York Mets National League outfielder, earned $5,200,000 more than the average Major League player earned. The Mets apparently believed that expenditure of this money was worth his expected additional victories. If the strategy of an Artificially Intelligent baseball manager could produce 4 more team victories than the corresponding human baseball manager, …

We investigate methods for tuning numeric parameters in Nynex MAX, a telephone trouble screening expert system. Steepest descent, hillclimbing, and simulated annealing parameter adjustment strategies are applied to the problems of maximizing classification accuracy and minimizing misclassification cost. For both of those optimization problems we evaluate each algorithm''s ability to tune initial parameters for several situations

A Fuzzy Logic-Based Foundation For Analyzing Imprecise Conflicting Requirements, J. Yen, Xiaoqing Frank Liu
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Imprecise requirements are represented by the canonical form in test-score semantics. The concepts of feasibility, satisfiability, and specificity are formalized based on the fuzzy sets. The relationships between requirements are classified to be conflicting and cooperative. A feasible overall requirement can thus be formulated based on the tradeoff analysis of the conflicting requirements by using fuzzy multi-criteria optimization technique

An Improved Characterization Of 1-Step Recoverable Embeddings: Rings In Hypercubes, Jun-Lin Liu, T.J. Sager, Bruce M. Mcmillin
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
An embedding is 1-step recoverable if any single fault occurs, the embedding can be reconfigured in one reconfiguration step to maintain the structure of the embedded graph. In this paper we present an efficient scheme to construct this type of 1-step recoverable ring embeddings in the hypercube. Our scheme will guarantee finding a 1-step recoverable embedding of a length-k (even) ring in a d-cube where 6 less than or equal to k less than or equal to (3/4)2/sup d/ and d greater than or equal to 3, provided such an embedding exists. Unlike previously proposed schemes, we solve the general …

Sediment samples were collected from all the major bays and estuaries along the US Gulf of Mexico Coastline in 1986-1988 by the NOAA NS & T Program (NOAA (1989), The National Status and Trends Program for marine environmental quality; NOAA/OMA, Rockville, MD, USA). These have been analyzed for total phosphorus as well as leachable Al-P, Ca-P and Fe-P. Total phosphorus concentration ranges from 1·8 to 45·9 μmol/g and averages 11·3 μmol/g. Higher values were found in Louisiana estuaries than in those in Texas but the highest values occur in the phosphate rock mining region of southern Florida. Ca-P is the …

Structural Properties Of Mixtures Of Highly Asymmetrical Electrolytes And Uncharged Particles Using The Hypernetted Chain Approximation, Daniel Forciniti, Carol K. Hall
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We have solved the Ornstein-Zernike equation in the hypernetted chain (HNC) approximation for several mixtures of electrolytes and uncharged hard spheres. The mixtures that we studied range from a simple restricted primitive model plus hard spheres of the same size to highly asymmetric electrolytes plus hard spheres of different sizes. We monitored the radial distribution function and thermodynamic properties. We find that the presence of neutral particles changes the nature of the interaction between the charged particles. We also find a strong correlation between nonelectrostatic and electrostatic contributions to the free energy of the mixtures. Potential applications of this approach …
Dominance Of The Thomas Mechanism For Electron Capture From Orientated Rydberg Atoms, Jee-Ching Wang, Ronald E. Olson
Dominance Of The Thomas Mechanism For Electron Capture From Orientated Rydberg Atoms, Jee-Ching Wang, Ronald E. Olson
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate electron capture from initially oriented circular Rydberg atoms by proton impact at collision speeds comparable to the electron orbital speed. The Thomas double scattering mechanism is observed even at these low relative speeds. Furthermore, we find evidence for the dominance of a quasi Thomas capture mechanism in the form of not a single peak, but a double-peaked structure in the differential cross section when the plane of the circular orbit is nearly perpendicular to the incident direction of the projectile. © 1994 The American Physical Society.
