Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Crystal structure, thermal expansion, oxygen stoichiometry, thermoelectricity, and electrical conductivity of compositions in the system La1 - xSrxCo0.2Fe0.8O3 with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.6 were studied as function of temperature and Sr content, in air. The solubility of Sr in the sintered perovskite-type oxide (ABO3) was limited to x ≤ 0.4. The observed p-type electrical conduction appeared to occur via a small-polaron hopping mechanism. The thermally induced oxygen loss caused a lattice expansion plus decreases in both the carrier concentration and the carrier mobility. A semi-empirical model was developed which takes into account the thermally activated disproportionation of Co3+ ions …

Iron Phosphate Glasses As A Potential Nuclear Waste Disposal Medium, Melissa G. Mesko Jan 1995

Iron Phosphate Glasses As A Potential Nuclear Waste Disposal Medium, Melissa G. Mesko

Masters Theses

”Phosphate glasses containing large amounts of Fe2O3 (up to 43wt%) were studied to determine their potential suitability as nuclear waste disposal glasses for high level radioactive wastes containing large concentrations of iron oxide, phosphate, and fluoride compounds. Glass formation and chemical durability was the prime focus of this study, while properties such as density, thermal expansion, dilatometric softening temperature, and devitrification temperature were examined as well. It was found that large amounts of simulated nuclear waste material (up to 44.4wt% Cs2O or 37.5wt% SrO) could be incorporated into the base iron phosphate glass while retaining …

Effects Of Specimen Size Reduction On The Transition Curve Of The Charpy V-Notch Impact Test, Lonnie Eugene Schubert

Masters Theses

"This study was undertaken to correlate the impact properties of ASTM standard full size Charpy V-notch impact specimens to the impact properties of subsize specimens. An ASTM A533-B quenched and tempered plate steel was examined. The fine grained martensitic material had a coarse prior austenite grain size, which resulted in a low upper shelf energy for this material. Three sizes of specimens were included. Specimens were irradiated in the TRIGA Reactor Facility operated by the U. S. Geological Survey in Denver, Colorado, to 1 x 1019 n/cm2 (E > 1 MeV) at 150°C (302°F). Unirradiated and irradiated specimens were …

Reflected Light Microscopy, Electron Microscopy, Electron Spectroscopy, And X-Ray Diffraction Mineralogical Characterization Of Electric Arc Furnace (Eaf) Dusts, Ann M. Hagni

Doctoral Dissertations

"The secondary steel industry in the United States generates 600,000 tons of electric arc furnace (EAF) dust each year. Over 5,000,000 tons of EAF dust are generated annually world wide. The dust, which is removed from off-gasses from the high temperature furnaces, is considered by the Environmental Protection Agency to be hazardous waste due to its leachable lead, cadmium, and chromium. In addition to hazardous components, EAF dust contains valuable zinc, averaging 19%. This study was initiated to determine the mineralogy and characterization of the dust to aid in the processing of the dust for metals recovery and rendering the …

A Neural Network Thrust Force Controller To Minimize Delamination During Drilling In Graphite Epoxy Laminates, Robert B. Stone Jan 1995

A Neural Network Thrust Force Controller To Minimize Delamination During Drilling In Graphite Epoxy Laminates, Robert B. Stone

Masters Theses

"Delamination is a well-recognized problem associated with drilling in fiber-reinforced composite materials (FRCM). The most noted problems occur as the drill enters and exits the FRCM. Since drilling is often a final operation during assembly, any defects introduced in parts by drilling represent an expensive loss. Studies based on linear elastic fracture mechanics theory have proposed critical thrust forces in the various drilling regions that will prevent crack growth or delamination. Using these critical thrust force curves as a guide, a thrust force controller was developed to minimize the delamination while drilling in graphite epoxy laminates. A neural network control …

Electrical And Thermal Transport Properties Of (La,Ca)(Cr,Co)O3, Rasit Koc, Harlan U. Anderson Jan 1995

Electrical And Thermal Transport Properties Of (La,Ca)(Cr,Co)O3, Rasit Koc, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

DC electrical conductivity and Seebeck data as functions of temperature and oxygen activity were used to explain the electrical and thermal transport properties of (La,Ca) (Cr,Co)O3. The electrical conductivity data of La (Cr,Co)O3 suggested that it depends upon Co content. At Co concentrations less than 20 mol%, Co acted as traps for the carriers and decreased the electrical conductivity of the compositions at temperatures less than 900 °C. As the Co concentration increased to above 20 mol%, electrical conductivity increased significantly due to a connecting path of available Co sites. Additional Ca substitution for La increased the electrical conductivity in …

Using Taguchi''S Method Of Experimental Design To Control Errors In Layered Perceptrons, William E. Bond, Gerald E. Peterson, Daniel C. St. Clair, Stephen R. Aylward

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

A significant problem in the design and construction of an artificial neural network for function approximation is limiting the magnitude and the variance of errors when the network is used in the field. Network errors can occur when the training data does not faithfully represent the required function due to noise or low sampling rates, when the network's flexibility does not match the variability of the data, or when the input data to the resultant network is noisy. This paper reports on several experiments whose purpose was to rank the relative significance of these error sources and thereby find neural …

An Efficient Multicomputer Algorithm For The Solution Of Chemical Process Flowsheeting Equations, Fikret Ercal, Neil L. Book, S. Pait, J. J. Fielding

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a parallel solution method of large sparse systems of linear equations arising in the context of a chemical process flowsheeting application on a message passing multicomputer. To maximize the performance, the algorithm uses a novel matrix decomposition and solution method, called parallel two-phased LU decomposition, which schedules the concurrent tasks in a maximally overlapping manner, and at the same time, tries to minimize the interprocessor data dependencies and obtain optimal load balancing. The forward elimination step is performed concurrently with the parallel two-phased LU decomposition step and backward substitution is parallelized in a piecewise manner. Implementation results …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The ac small-signal response of La0.6Sr0.4CO02Feo.803 (LSCF) is examined via lumped parameter/complex plane analysis (LP/CPA) technique. The ac data, acquired in the frequency range lO-1≤F≤106Hz, are used to establish the role of ionic contribution in the LSCF material system using a two-terminal blocking electrode method. Spun-on yttria (8 mole percent (m/o) Y203) stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) or Ce0.85Sm0.15O2 (CSO) thin film coatings (0.3 - 1.0 µm) is used as electron blocking electrodes. The temperature dependence of the contributing elements between the terminals, obtained via LP/CPA technique and dc measurements, is evaluated. The activation energy, associated with possible oxygen transport via an …

Automatic Pcb Inspection Systems, M. Moganti, Fikret Erçal Jan 1995

Automatic Pcb Inspection Systems, M. Moganti, Fikret Erçal

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

There are more than 50 process steps required to fabricate a printed circuit board (PCB). To ensure quality, human operators simply inspect the work visually against prescribed standards. The decisions made by this labor intensive, and therefore costly, procedure often also involve subjective judgements. Automatic inspection systems remove the subjective aspects and provide fast, quantitative dimensional assessments. Machine vision may answer the manufacturing industry's need to improve product quality and increase productivity. The major limitation of existing inspection systems is that all the algorithms need a special hardware platform to achieve the desired real-time speeds. This makes the systems extremely …

Determination And Use Of Rohrschneider-Mcreynolds Constants For Chiral Stationary Phases Used In Capillary Gas Chromatography, Alain Berthod, Eve Yiwen Zhou, Kang Le, Daniel W. Armstrong Jan 1995

Determination And Use Of Rohrschneider-Mcreynolds Constants For Chiral Stationary Phases Used In Capillary Gas Chromatography, Alain Berthod, Eve Yiwen Zhou, Kang Le, Daniel W. Armstrong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The overall polarity of 22 chiral stationary phases (CSPs) used in capillary open tubular gas chromatography columns was estimated using the first five Rohrschneider-McReynolds constants. Most of the columns (i.e., 18) were wall-coated, and four were of the wall-immobilized or of the so-called "bonded" type. A wall-coated capillary squalane column was specially prepared as a polarity reference column. All but two of the CSPs were based on derivatized cyclodextrins (CDs) of different sizes. The overall properties of the CSPs are discussed in terms of the five Rohrschneider-McReynolds constants and their average values. It was found that the derivatized cyclodextrin CSP …

Static And Dynamic Characteristics Of Spot Welded Sheet Metal Beams, K. Pal, Don L. Cronin Jan 1995

Static And Dynamic Characteristics Of Spot Welded Sheet Metal Beams, K. Pal, Don L. Cronin

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Although widely employed as structural components in the auto industry, spot welded sheet metal beams manifest static and dynamic behavior that is not well characterized. For the present study, sample beams of three representative cross-sections—hat, box and box with partition—were fabricated of sheet steel. The spacing between the spot welds that hold these sections together was varied from 25.4 mm (1 in.) to 203.2 mm (8 in.) using a 25.4 mm (1 in.) increment. The beams were subjected to static bending and static torsion tests, and bending and torsional stiffnesses were determined as functions of spot weld spacing. The beams …

Vibration Of Point-Supported Rectangular Composite Plates, Serge Abrate Jan 1995

Vibration Of Point-Supported Rectangular Composite Plates, Serge Abrate

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A general approach is presented to study the free vibrations of rectangular symmetrically laminated composite plates with point supports by using the Rayleigh-Ritz method and the Lagrange multiplier technique for enforcing the zero displacement constraints at the support locations. Polynomial approximation functions are used, and the constitutive relationships are written in terms of four lamination parameters. With these lamination parameters, the number of design variables is reduced to a minimum, which is useful for design optimization purposes, while all symmetric lay-ups are considered. This paper illustrates how the lamination parameters can be used for optimal design of vibrating plates. Results …

Ensuring The Satisfaction Of A Temporal Specification At Run-Time, Grace Tsai, Matt Insall, Bruce M. Mcmillin Jan 1995

Ensuring The Satisfaction Of A Temporal Specification At Run-Time, Grace Tsai, Matt Insall, Bruce M. Mcmillin

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A responsive computing system is a hybrid of real-time, distributed and fault-tolerant systems. In such a system, severe consequences can occur if the run-time behavior does not conform to the expected behavior or specifications. In this paper, we present a formal approach to ensure satisfaction of the specifications in the operational environment as follows. First we specify behavior of the systems using Interval Temporal Logic (ITL). Next we give algorithms for trace checking of programs in such systems. Finally, we present a fully distributed run-time evaluation system which causally orders the events of the system during its execution and checks …

A New Neural Architecture For Homing Missile Guidance, S. N. Balakrishnan, Victor Biega Jan 1995

A New Neural Architecture For Homing Missile Guidance, S. N. Balakrishnan, Victor Biega

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a new neural architecture which imbeds dynamic programming solutions to solve optimal target-intercept problems. They provide feedback guidance solutions, which are optimal with any initial conditions and time-to-go, for a 2D scenario. The method discussed in this study determines an optimal control law for a system by successively adapting two networks - an action and a critic network. This method determines the control law for an entire range of initial conditions; it simultaneously determines and adapts the neural networks to the optimal control policy for both linear and nonlinear systems. In addition, it is important to know that …

Anomalous-Diffusion Model Of Ionic Transport In Oxide Glasses, David L. Sidebottom, Peter F. Green, Richard K. Brow

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The power-law frequency dependence of both the conductivity, (), and permittivity, (), of ion-conducting materials suggests that self-similar or scale-invariant behavior influences the transport of ions at high frequencies. Using an anomalous-diffusion model, we derive relevant power-law expressions for () and () and compare these with measurements performed on LiPO3 glass. Superior fits to the measured data are obtained compared to the commonly used Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) description of the electrical modulus, most particularly in the notorious high-frequency regime. Evaluation of our results in terms of an anomalous-diffusion model suggests the dominance of interaction-based constraints to diffusion. © 1995 The American …

Two Contributions To The Ac Conductivity Of Alkali Oxide Glasses, David L. Sidebottom, Peter F. Green, Richard K. Brow

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Although the frequency dependent conductivity of ion-containing glasses often displays scale invariant power law dispersion at high temperatures, the exponent increases to unity at lower temperatures. We report measurements of the conductivity of a series of alkali metaphosphate glasses including a mixed alkali composition and demonstrate that this temperature dependence results from the superposition of two power law dispersions originating from separate mechanism, and does not indicate any intrinsic change in scaling of the process which dominates at high temperatures. © 1995 The American Physical Society.

Electrical Characterization Of The (La,Ca) (Cr,Co)O3 System, S. R. Sehlin, Harlan U. Anderson, Don M. Sparlin

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The results of electrical conductivity and thermopower measurements are presented for selected (La,Ca)(Cr,Co)O3 compositions. The La1 - xCaxCrO3 compounds are typical p-type small polaron conductors. The La1 - xCaxCrO3 compounds are found to be small polaron conductors at room temperature for x ≤ 0.20 with a higher electrical conductivity than the corresponding chromite's. The electrical conductivity at room temperature is lower for Co-rich compositions than for Cr-rich compositions for compositions containing 10 mol% and 20 mol% Ca. This fact is attributed to the trapping of p-type small polarons at energetically lower Cr sites, resulting in a broad room temperature conductivity …
