This study explores the potential to predict the drug-loading and release profiles of aerogels based on their morphologies: a milestone in drug delivery research, which can help save time and cost in formulating new aerogel drug carriers and cut-down evaluation of the drug delivery capabilities of aerogels to a few experimental runs. Polyurea (PUA) and poly(isocyanurate-urethane) (PIR-PUR) aerogels were used as model systems, while 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and paracetamol (PM) were used as model drugs. These model systems were chosen because they can be synthesized into different morphologies, which can be quantified by the so-called K-index (water contact angle divided by …

In this article, we demonstrated carbon aerogel-silica composites derived from polyurea-cross-linked silica xerogel powders (C-PUA@silica) as anodes for Na-ion batteries. These xerogel-derived hard carbons with embedded silica showed a stable high capacity. Of the several hard carbon samples derived at different temperatures, the pyrolyzed sample at 800 °C (C-PUA@silica-800) showed a high capacity of 236 mAh/g at a current density of 10 mA/g and a stable cycle-life at 200 mAh/g. The galvanostatic charge-discharge curves displayed a sloping voltage profile reminiscent of the adsorption mechanism of Na+ storage. On the other hand, higher temperature-pyrolyzed samples at 1300 °C (C-PUA@silica-1300) displayed a …

Trends And Opportunities For Material Information Sharing: Applying Bim To Support Supply Chain Management In Construction Projects, Seog Jae Choi, Fernanda Leite
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Due to dynamic organizations and unexpected conditions on project sites, the construction industry has suffered from schedule and cost overruns. Researchers have applied building information modeling (BIM) and supply chain management (SCM) concepts to integrate diverse stakeholders, and further, improve efficiency in construction projects. BIM can support supply chain integration (SCI) by providing reliable up-to-date information on a project, which reduces resource waste and completes the project as planned. Specifically, sharing updated material information, including the state of material fabrication, current location, each material's due date on site, and site inventory status, is crucial for successful project execution because such …

We have measured and calculated fully differential cross sections (FDCS) for dissociative capture in 75-keV p+H2 collisions. FDCS were analyzed in the kinetic energy release (KER) ranges 0 to 2.1 eV and 4 to 7 eV for two different molecular orientations. In the latter range, dissociation is dominated by electronic excitation to the 2pπu state. Here, we observed two-center interference for an orientation in the plane perpendicular to the initial beam axis and parallel to the transverse momentum transfer. The interference pattern is afflicted with a constant phase shift of π. In the range KER=0 to 2.1 eV, dissociation is …

The brittleness and limited plastic deformation of ceramics restrict their applications. In this work, the effects of pristine (CNTP), functionalized (CNTOH, CNTCOOH) and silanized MWCNTs on the mechanical properties of Silicon Carbide obtained by pyrolyzing polycarbosilane SMP-10 were studied. Functionalization with 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxy was analyzed through dispersion stability, zeta potential, and EDS analyses, revealing increased silicon content and colloidal stability in silanized MWCNTs. However, silanized MWCNTs led to reduced mechanical properties in composites, while untreated MWCNTs (CNTP, CNTOH, CNTCOOH), showed a substantial increase in modulus by 74.2 %, 86.9 %, and 30.5 %, respectively. The observed enhancement in mechanical properties exceeded …

Development Of A High-Pressure Infiltration Process For Phenol–Formaldehyde Matrix Composites, Samuel Weiler, Patrick Schwartzkopf, Henry Haffner, K. Chandrashekhara
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Phenol–formaldehyde (phenolic) thermosets are known for excellent heat and chemical resistance, high flame retardance, and good mechanical performance. However, phenolics are also known for their high brittleness, and tendency to form voids, due to a condensation reaction forming water during curing. These voids can decrease the mechanical performance of the resultant phenolic composite and introduce undesirable performance characteristics. This work aims to develop a technique that uses high-pressure infiltration to obtain dense phenolic matrix composites, with commercially available resin and fiber reinforcement. The high-pressure system developed in this work is compared to a conventional low-pressure resin infusion technique, and the …

Hyper-Thick Electrodes For Lithium-Ion Batteries Enabled By Micro-Electric-Field Process, Tazdik Patwary Plateau, Gracie Boyer, Jonghyun Park
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Increasing electrode thickness is a key strategy to boost energy density in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which is essential for electric vehicles and energy storage applications. However, thick electrodes face significant challenges, including poor ion transport, long diffusion paths, and mechanical instability, all of which degrade battery performance. to overcome these barriers, a novel micro-electric-field (μ-EF) process is introduced that enhances particle alignment during fabrication with reduced distance between anode and cathode. This process produces hyper-thick (≈700 µm) electrodes with low tortuosity and improved ion diffusion. the μ-EF electrodes achieve high areal capacities (≈8 mAh cm−2), while maintaining power density and …
Kinetic Simulations Of Dust Grain Charging Near Surfaces Under Various Plasma Conditions, David Lund, Daoru Han
Kinetic Simulations Of Dust Grain Charging Near Surfaces Under Various Plasma Conditions, David Lund, Daoru Han
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents fully kinetic numerical investigations of the charging of spherical and irregular shaped dust grains in multiple configurations utilizing the Parallel Immersed-Finite-Element Particle-in-Cell Dusty (PIFE-PIC-D) framework. The simulations account for both surface charging and in-depth charging of the dust grains immersed in various ambient plasma conditions near a floating or biased surface. PIFE-PIC-D explicitly resolves the geometrical and material properties (permittivity and photoelectron emissions) of each individual dust grain. PIFE-PIC-D will model self-consistently the unsteady and stochastic charging of grains directly from the deposition of electrons and ions onto them. PIFE-PIC-D will also simulate the charging of irregular-shaped …

A magnetic filter-type plasma source has been installed and characterized in a 10 ft long x 6ft diameter vacuum chamber. The plasma source was characterized with a fleet of diagnostic probes including an in-house cylindrical Langmuir probe. This resulted in the measurement of key plasma parameters such as electron number density, electron temperature, plasma potential, Debye length, ion current density, streaming ion energy, ion number density, and streaming ion velocity. By varying the flow rates, discharge current, and distance, single points measurements were taken at three locations downstream of the plasma source to establish an optimum operating condition to simulate …

Investigating Bistable Dynamics Of Coupled Oscillators With Similarities To Neural Activity In Epilepsy, Nilay Kant, Ranjan Mukherjee
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The dynamics of an oscillator, which exhibits a stable equilibrium and a stable limit cycle, is investigated. We refer to it as a bistable oscillator unit (BOU) and show that two coupled BOUs (CBOUs) exhibit dynamics analogous to neural activity patterns in epilepsy, including healthy, localized, and fully spread epileptic states. By treating each CBOU as an independent system influenced by the state of the other, we establish local input-to-state stability near the equilibrium and the limit cycle and estimate the ultimate bounds of the trajectories. Our analysis identifies the domain of the initial conditions and estimates the coupling parameter …

Dielectric Properties Of Polycrystalline And Single-Crystal Magnesium Oxide At High Temperatures, Alan Devoe, Hung Trinh, Fatih Dogan
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The electrical properties of high-purity magnesium oxide (MgO) samples sintered between 1500 and 1650°C were investigated up to 800°C. Dielectric constant, loss tangent and electrical conductivity were measured between 25 and 800°C. Optimum electrical properties were obtained for the sample sintered at 1600°C. The impurities in polycrystalline and single crystal MgO were discussed to understand their effect on electrical properties and the role of grain boundaries. Higher dielectric losses of polycrystalline samples as compared to the single crystal MgO were attributed to the presence of grain boundaries. MgO could be a useful dielectric material for capacitor applications up to 600°C.

New Insights On Economic Theories Of The Family Firm, James J. Chrisman, Chevy-Hanqing Fang, Silvio Vismara, Zhenyu Wu
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
Research attention to family firms has significantly increased in recent years, with a growing application of economic theories such as agency theory and resource-based theory to explain differences between family firms and nonfamily firms and heterogeneity among family firm populations. Despite this progress, the formulation of an economic theory of family business remains notably absent. Merely applying existing economic theories of the firm to the realm of family business is inadequate, as these general theories fail to incorporate the idiosyncratic aspects of family firms, such as the pursuit of socioemotional wealth. This paper seeks to advance economic theories specific to …

The integration of dynamic Flying Ad hoc Networks (FANETs) and millimeter Wave (mmWave) technology can offer a promising solution for numerous data-intensive applications, as it enables the establishment of a robust flying infrastructure with significant data transmission capabilities. However, to enable effective mmWave communication within this dynamic network, it is essential to precisely align the steerable antennas mounted on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with their corresponding peer units. Therefore, it is important to design a novel approach that can quickly determine an optimized alignment and network topology. In this paper, we propose a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based approach, called WaveGAN, …

This study reports the fabrication of an 4th-order line-by-line Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) array using femtosecond laser inscription within a highly multimode coreless optical fiber, with a particular focus on achieving substantial multiplexing capabilities. An ultra-fast annealing procedure is employed, resulting in an impressive enhancement of the FBG sensor's fringe visibility by approximately 13 dB, signifying a notable improvement of approximately ~4 dB. This substantial enhancement contributes to the long-term stability and performance of the multiplexed FBG array in extreme temperature conditions. The systematic fabrication approach employed for the multiplexed FBG array guarantees a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each …

Controller Area Network With Flexible Data Rate (Can Fd) Eye Diagram Prediction, Junyong Park, Manho Lee, Shinyoung Park, Jonghoon Kim, Joungho Kim, Donghyun Kim
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A method for predicting the eye diagram for a controller area network with a flexible data rate (CAN FD) is proposed in this article. A CAN FD changes a data rate according to the status to overcome the limitation of latency. In other words, when data to be transmitted are accumulated, the CAN FD increases the data rate up to 5 Mb/s. The CAN FD has a bus topology consisting of multiple electronic control units, which results in a significant amount of signal reflection. Thus, the above causes the signal integrity analysis uncertain. To avoid this, this article proposes a …

Meta-Icvi: Ensemble Validity Metrics For Concise Labeling Of Correct, Under- Or Over-Partitioning In Streaming Clustering, Niklas M. Melton, Sasha Petrenko, Donald C. Wunsch
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Understanding the performance and validity of clustering algorithms is both challenging and crucial, particularly when clustering must be done online. Until recently, most validation methods have relied on batch calculation and have required considerable human expertise in their interpretation. Improving real-time performance and interpretability of cluster validation, therefore, continues to be an important theme in unsupervised learning. Building upon previous work on incremental cluster validity indices (iCVIs), this paper introduces the Meta- iCVI as a tool for explainable and concise labeling of partition quality in online clustering. Leveraging a time-series classifier and data-fusion techniques, the Meta- iCVI combines the outputs …

Equivalent Source Investigation For Pcb Vibration Excited By A Multilayer Ceramic Capacitor, Yifan Ding, Ming Feng Xue, Jianmin Zhang, Xin Hua, Benjamin Leung, Eric A. Macintosh, Chulsoon Hwang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) are commonly used on printed circuit board (PCB) power distribution networks (PDN) for decoupling purposes. However, an MLCC can act as a source to excite PCB vibrations due to noise ripples on the power rail. In this letter, four types of equivalent source configurations are studied and compared to represent the excitation of an MLCC on a PCB driven by power rail noise. The corresponding source values are extracted at test-vehicle PCB resonance frequencies. The investigation of the four equivalent source types involves a comparison between simulated and measured PCB vibration velocity responses triggered by MLCC …

This article presents a wideband phase less source reconstruction method (SRM) for the evaluation of the radiated emissions from printed circuit boards (PCBs) in shielding enclosures. The PCBs are modeled with equivalent dipoles, and the numerical Green's function (NGF) is deployed to establish the relationship between the equivalent source and the input near-field (NF) data, thus the electromagnetic influences of the surrounding environments comprehensively accounted. This method only requires magnitude-only NF scanning over a single plane, thus significantly decreasing the NF measurement difficulty. To remedy the lack of phase information of the NF data, the input NF data are equally …

Time-Resolved Electromagnetic Near-Field Scanning: Dual Sparse Sampling In Time And Space, Yanming Zhang, Peifeng Ma, Lijun Jiang, Steven Gao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Time-resolved electromagnetic near-field scanning plays a pivotal role in antenna measurement and unraveling complex electromagnetic interference and compatibility issues. However, the rapid acquisition of high-resolution spatio–temporal data remains challenging due to physical constraints, such as moving the probe position and allowing sufficient time for sampling. This article presents a novel hybrid approach combining kriging for sparse spatial measurement, compressed sensing (cs) for sparse temporal sampling, and dynamic mode decomposition (dmd) for comprehensive analysis of the dual-sparse sampling electromagnetic near-field data. We leverage cs to optimize sparse sampling in the time domain and latin hypercube sampling to guide the probe position …

Introduction: Shock wave overpressure exposures can result in blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) in warfighters. Although combat helmets provide protection against blunt impacts, the protection against blast waves is limited due to the observed high overpressures occurring underneath the helmet. One route to enhance these helmets is by incorporating viscoelastic materials into the helmet designs, reducing pressures imposed on the head. This study aims to further investigate this mitigation technique against under-helmet overpressures by adding a viscoelastic liner to the inside of a combat helmet. Methods: The liner's effectiveness was evaluated by exposing it to free-field blasts of Composition C-4 …

The manipulation of anisotropic nanoparticles, such as gold nanorods and nano prisms, has attracted great attention in nanotechnology due to their sensitive geometry-dependent properties. However. traditional synthesis and assembly methods for these particles face challenges in size uniformity and higher-order structuring. To address these limitations, this study presents a strategy using DNA origami triangles, not just as templates, but as encapsulating agents for gold nanotriangles (AuNTs). This method enables the construction of diverse nanoparticle clusters with precisely controlled distance and orientation. The formed clusters exhibit unique optical characteristics, demonstrated by UV-visible spectroscopy and supported by finite-difference time domain (FDTD) simulations. …

Theoretical Modeling And Experimental Investigation Of Phase Selection During Rapid Solidification Of Alloys, Azeez Aremu Akinbo
Masters Theses
"A novel model, rooted in time-dependent nucleation theory, has been created to explore how rapid solidification affects the extended solubility in metal alloys. This model was used to forecast solubility concerning undercooling in multiple binary aluminum (Al) alloys, and its predictions for both eutectic and peritectic systems closely match experimental data. It was demonstrated that this developed model surpasses the T0 line method, which does not consider the kinetic aspects of nucleation. Furthermore, the model can be extended to ternary and multicomponent phases by assuming that the scarcest element or the slowest diffusing component restricts nucleation. Al-Cu and Al-Cr, vital …

Personality measures are popular and useful in employment selection and academic contexts; however, concerns have been voiced regarding the strength of their association with desirable criteria. Contextualization (i.e., modifying measures to reflect the desired frame of reference, like work or school) has emerged as a promising option. Research has demonstrated that contextualizing personality measures increases predictive validity and enhances participants' perceptions of the assessments. However, few studies have compared contextualization methods to one another and, to date, only one study has compared the two most common forms of contextualization (i.e., instruction and tag contextualization), returning inconsistent findings. In a within-person, …

Given that employee performance goals are major determinants of work motivation and performance, examining the factors that influence goal setting has generated substantial research interest. Despite decades of work, however, the relationship between affect and goal setting is poorly understood. Based on mood-as-information and arousal-as-information theories, our study examines the extent that affective valence and affective arousal influence goal-setting processes and, in particular, the extent that the activation level moderates the effect of affective valence. Since theoretical perspectives that attempt to explain the process of goal setting are commonly based on an expectancy-value framework, we examined the effects of affective …
