A Review Of Current Safe Distance Calculations And The Risk Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, A. R. Loflin, C. E. Johnson

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Explosive breaching is a tactic operational professionals use to gain rapid entry and tactical advantage. This tactic exposes individuals to repeated low-level blasts (LLB), overpressure exposure generally occurring from user-directed munitions. The experimentation described in this paper highlights the need for further research into implementing explosives in tactical situations, specifically in confined areas, and the effects on individuals exposed. While current safety calculations predict peak pressures from an open-air detonation, this study incorporates the impulse of the total explosive event in a confined space. Sixteen explosive events were conducted to measure peak overpressures of the total duration of the event …

Pressureless Sintering And Properties Of Additively Manufactured Zrb2–Sic, Marharyta Lakusta, Nicholas M. Timme, Jeremy L. Watts, William G. Fahrenholtz, Gregory E. Hilmas, David W. Lipke

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Densification behavior, grain growth kinetics, mechanical and thermal properties of pressurelessly sintered zirconium diboride–silicon carbide (ZrB2–SiC) fabricated by extrusion of high solids loading pastes have been studied. The effects of sintering temperature (1600–2300°C), heating rate during constant heating rate sintering (10–50°C/min), and time during isothermal sintering (3–24 h) on density and grain size were examined. The apparent activation energy for densification was determined to be 940 ± 90 kJ/mol, suggesting lattice diffusion as the dominant sintering mechanism. Grain growth of both ZrB2 and SiC followed a normal grain growth power law with grain growth exponent n = 2 indicating diffusion-controlled …

Ijmc/Fef Student Research Competition: Understanding The Effect Of Boron On Graphite Nodularity And Distribution In Ductile Iron Castings, Chase Schroeder, Colleen Lehrer, Simon Lekakh, Laura Bartlett

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ductile iron is renowned for its superior mechanical properties, higher strength, and ductility, combined with excellent castability and the economy of using a scrap melting process. The matrix structure as well as morphology and distribution of graphite nodules significantly influences mechanical properties of as-cast ductile iron. Boron contamination of the scrap supply has presented some difficulties in controlling the microstructure and mechanical properties of certain gray and ductile iron grades. In the current study, the effect of boron levels up to 95 ppm was determined on graphite nodularity and distribution in as-cast ductile iron castings as a function of section …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electrical Energy Conversion Systems (EECSs) are extensively utilized in contemporary stand-alone systems to supply power to isolated loads. They are also integrated into distributed generation systems, micro grids, and smart grids. In each of these contexts, it is essential to conduct efficient energy management procedures to optimize the electrical energy systems output and ensure the effective and high-quality delivery of electric energy to consumers. To create the energy management system for such a system, careful consideration must be given to the configuration of the power conversion and conditioning system, as well as the specific hardware devices that make up this …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Natural organic memristors are promising synapse candidates for neuromorphic systems due to their significant benefits, such as environmental sustainability, low production and disposal cost, non-volatile storage capability, and bio/CMOS-compatibility. In this paper, experimental evaluations of a neuromorphic system based on honey-memristors are reported. First, honey-memristors are manufactured and tested based on our in-house technology, and then the non-linear characteristics inherent to honey-memristors, which causes inaccurate weight updates and reduces the inference accuracy, are explored. A non-linear mapping (NMP) method is applied to mitigate the effects of non-linearity in honey-memristor, under different scenarios including multiple cycle-to-cycle variations and Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) …

Development Of A Deep Neural Network And Empirical Model For Predicting Local Gas Holdup Profiles In Bubble Columns, Sebastián Uribe, Ahmed Alalou, Mario E. Cordero, Muthanna H. Al-Dahhan

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Estimating local gas holdup profiles in bubble columns is key for their performance evaluation and optimization, as well as for design and scale-up tasks. Up to the current day, there are important limitations in the accuracy and range of applicability of the available models in literature. Two alternatives for the prediction of such local fields can be found in the application of empirical models and the development of deep neural networks (DNN). The main drawback preventing the application of these techniques in previous years was the availability of a large enough databank of local gas holdup experimental measurements. Advances over …

Boosting The Microbial Electrosynthesis Of Formate By Shewanella Oneidensis Mr-1 With An Ionic Liquid Cosolvent, Ashwini Dantanarayana, Wassim El Housseini, Kevin Beaver, Monica Brachi, Timothy P. Mcfadden, Shelley D. Minteer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a rapidly growing technology at the forefront of sustainable chemistry, leveraging the ability of microorganisms to catalyze electrochemical reactions to synthesize valuable compounds from renewable energy sources. The reduction of CO2 is a major target application for MES, but research in this area has been stifled, especially with the use of direct electron transfer (DET)-based microbial systems. The major fundamental hurdle that needs to be overcome is the low efficiency of CO2 reduction largely attributed to minimal microbial access to CO2 owing to its low solubility in the electrolyte. With their tunable physical …
