On A Fully Coupled Nonlocal Multipoint Boundary Value Problem For A Dual Hybrid System Of Nonlinear Q -Fractional Differential Equations, Ahmed Alsaedi, Martin Bohner, Bashir Ahmad, Boshra Alharbi
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A new class of nonlocal multipoint boundary value problems involving a dual hybrid system of nonlinear Riemann-Liouville-type q-fractional differential equations is studied in this paper. Existence and uniqueness results for the given problem are derived by applying the Leray-Schauder nonlinear alternative and the Banach contraction mapping principle. Examples are presented for illustrating the obtained results. The work established in this paper is a useful contribution to the existing literature on q-fractional differential equations. Some interesting special cases are also discussed.

This work is devoted to the study of multiplicity results of solutions for a class of nonlinear equations involving the square root of the Laplacian. Indeed, we will use variational methods for smooth functionals, defined on reflexive Banach spaces, in order to achieve the existence of at least three solutions for the equations. Moreover, assuming that the nonlinear terms are nonnegative, we will prove that the solutions are nonnegative. Finally, by presenting an example, we will ensure the applicability of our results.

Comparison Of Energy Budget Of Cockroach Nymph (Hemimetabolous) And Hornworm (Holometabolous) Under Food Restriction, Charles J. Green, Chen Hou
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Animals with different life histories budget their intake energy differently when food availability is low. It has been shown previously that hornworm (larva of Manduca sexta), a holometabolous insect species with a short development stage, prioritizes growth at the price of metabolism under food restriction, but it is unclear how hemimetabolous insect species with a relatively long development period budget their intake energy under food scarcity. Here, we use orange head cockroaches (Eublaberus posticus) to investigate this question. We found that for both species under food restriction, rates of metabolism and growth were suppressed, but the degree of reduction was …

A Stackelberg routing platform (SRP) reduces congestion in one-shot traffic networks by proposing optimal route recommendations to the selfish travelers. Traditionally, Stackel-berg routing is cast as a partial control problem where a fraction of the traveler flow complies with route recommendations, while the remaining responds as selfish travelers. In this paper, we formulate a novel Stackelberg routing framework where the agents exhibit probabilistic compliance by accepting SRP's route recommendations with a trust probability. Specifically, we propose a greedy Trust-Aware Stackelberg Routing algorithm (in short, TASR) for SRP to compute unique path recommendations to each traveler flow with a unique demand. …

Mixed-dimensional nanomaterials composed of one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, such as graphene-silver nanowire (AgNW) composite sandwiched structures, are promising candidates as building blocks for multifunctional structures and materials. However, their mechanical behavior and failure mechanism have not yet been fully understood. In this work, we have performed integrated experimental, theoretical, and numerical studies to explore the performance and failure modes of graphene-AgNW composite under tensile and impact loading conditions. In situ tensile tests using a nano indenter, implemented with a push-to-pull device and a laser-induced projectile impact test system, are used to shed light on load-bearing mechanisms in graphene-AgNW …

Limestone (calcite) calcined clay cement (LC3) is a promising low-CO2 binder, but the low activity of calcite cannot compensate the reduction in clinker factor, resulting in low one-day strength and limiting its broad applications. As recent carbon capture and utilization technologies allow scalable production of vaterite, a more reactive CaCO3 polymorph, we overcome the challenge by introducing vaterite calcined clay cement (VC3), inspired by the vaterite-calcite phase change. In the present study, VC3 exhibits higher compressive strengths and faster hydration than LC3. Compared to hydrated LC3, hydrated VC3 exhibits increased amount of hemi- and mono-carboaluminate formation and decreased amount of …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Concrete bridges are vulnerable to both natural and man-made disasters, as well as aging and deterioration processes throughout their lifespan. Timely detection of defects in concrete structures is crucial for repair and decision-making purposes. However, traditional methods like visual inspection are time-consuming and expensive. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with infrared thermography (IRT) offer an efficient and cost-effective solution for detecting defects in concrete structures. This study presents passive and active IRT techniques for detecting common concrete defects, such as delamination and cracks. Principle and methods for quantifying these defects and evaluating the extent of damage are introduced. Experiments are …

A Fuzzy Model And Decision-Support Tool For Assessing And Predicting The Probability Of Bankruptcy Of Construction Companies, Rayan H. Assaad, Ghiwa Assaf, Islam H. El-Adaway
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Construction firms face considerable risks that might lead to business bankruptcy. Failed construction companies leave behind unfinished projects, which leads to huge losses to project owners. While previous studies were conducted to understand the factors that contribute to the bankruptcy of construction organizations, little to no research was performed to quantitatively assess the risk of construction business bankruptcy. Hence, this paper addresses this knowledge gap by developing a fuzzy model for predicting the probability of business bankruptcy of construction companies. First, the following six failure warning signs were considered: financial management system, borrowed credit, estimating and job-cost reporting, project management, …

The United States has invested heavily in water and wastewater infrastructure projects to address growing demand and aging systems. To ensure the effective delivery of these projects, agencies are shifting toward alternative delivery methods such as progressive design build (PDB), which has demonstrated accelerated schedule and enhanced cost performance across the literature as well as multiple projects compared to traditional DB. This has raised a need for evaluating PDB's state of adoption and performance in the water and wastewater sector. To this end, the authors: (1) conducted descriptive and statistical analyses of the 21 PDB water and wastewater projects available …

Work zones are crucial for infrastructure maintenance and improvement. However, ongoing projects within work zones sometimes can place workers and drivers in dangerous situations. Despite safety regulations, work zone accidents persist with notable severity and frequency. Previous research has explored work zone accident causation, but it has not provided a comprehensive understanding of the factors that impact work zone safety. This paper addresses this research gap by following a multistep methodology. First, a systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted to identify a comprehensive list of 37 factors impacting work zone safety. Second, social network analysis (SNA) was employed to analyze …

Use of figurative language, such as metaphors and idioms, is common in our daily-life communications, and it can also be found in Software Engineering (SE) channels, such as comments on GitHub. Automatically interpreting figurative language is a challenging task, even with modern Large Language Models (LLMs), as it often involves subtle nuances. This is particularly true in the SE domain, where figurative language is frequently used to convey technical concepts, often bearing developer affect (e.g., 'spaghetti code). Surprisingly, there is a lack of studies on how figurative language in SE communications impacts the performance of automatic tools that focus on …

This paper studies the fundamental problem of energy consumption in the movement of mobile random sensors ensuring k-weak coverage on the domain. In particular, we analyze two notions of k-weak coverage on the unit square, namely (1) (k, x)-weak coverage in which every straight-line path across the width of the unit square passes through the sensing range of at least k sensors; and (2) (k, x, y)-weak coverage in which every straight-line path across the width and the length of the unit square passes through the sensing range of at least k sensors. The number of reliable and p-reliable sensors …

Domain Name System (DNS) tunneling is a well-known cyber-attack that allows data exfiltration - the attackers exploit this tunnel to extract sensitive information from the system. Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) attackers encapsulate malicious traffic in a DNS connection to elude security mechanisms such as Intrusion Detection System (IDS). Although different techniques have been implemented to detect these targeted attacks, their rise induces a threat to Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). The DNS over HTTPS (DoH) tunnel detection is a challenge because the encrypted data prevents an analysis of DNS traffic content. In this paper, we present a novel detection system that identifies …

Geo-Distributed Machine Learning (GDML) aims to train large-scale machine learning models across geographically dispersed datacenters. However, the performance of GDML systems is constrained by the limited Wide Area Network (WAN) bandwidth and the presence of the straggler problem. Existing GDML designs often show contradictory effects in addressing these challenges, while in-network computing attempts are typically restricted to single datacenter environments rather than the more complex GDML scenarios. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes L3DML to facilitate GDML using the P4-based Software-defined Network (SDN). Our approach incorporates three key innovations. Firstly, we introduce a novel network addressing scheme that enables …

Semi-supervised learning (SSL) seeks to enhance task performance by training on both labeled and unlabeled data. Mainstream SSL image classification methods mostly optimize a loss that additively combines a supervised classification objective with a regularization term derived solely from unlabeled data. This formulation often neglects the potential for interaction between labeled and unlabeled images. In this paper, we introduce InterLUDE, a new approach to enhance SSL made of two parts that each benefit from labeled-unlabeled interaction. The first part, embedding fusion, interpolates between labeled and unlabeled embeddings to improve representation learning. The second part is a new loss, grounded in …

Core-Periphery Multi-Modality Feature Alignment For Zero-Shot Medical Image Analysis, Xiaowei Yu, Lu Zhang, Zihao Wu, Dajiang Zhu
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Multi-modality learning, exemplified by the language-image pair pre-trained CLIP model, has demonstrated remarkable performance in enhancing zero-shot capabilities and has gained significant attention recently. However, simply applying language-image pre-trained CLIP to medical image analysis encounters substantial domain shifts, resulting in severe performance degradation due to inherent disparities between natural (non-medical) and medical image characteristics. To address this challenge and uphold or even enhance CLIP's zero-shot capability in medical image analysis, we develop a novel approach, Core-Periphery feature alignment for CLIP (CP-CLIP), to model medical images and corresponding clinical text jointly. To achieve this, we design an auxiliary neural network whose …

Recently, a novel cortical folding pattern known as the 3-hinge gyrus (3HG) has been identified. 3HGs are defined as the convergence of the gyri coming from three distinct directions on gyral crests. In contrast to cortical regions, 3HGs are defined at a finer scale and they widely exist across different individuals, representing both commonalities and individualities of cortical folding patterns. It is important to note that 3HGs are identified in individual spaces, lacking natural cross-subject correspondences. To address this issue, we have developed a learning-based method to encode anatomical features of 3HGs into a set of embedding vectors that can …

Surfactants have been widely used to alter the wettability of carbonate rocks from oil-wetness to water-wetness and enhanced oil recovery. One of primary methods implemented in filed applications for enhanced oil recovery is surfactant huff-puff. Currently, a large number of surfactant treatments are conducted in laboratories prior to field applications to optimize the design of surfactant huff-puff, test the performance of surfactants, and minimize failure risk. This process is time-consuming since a treatment could last from several days to more than 300 days. Moreover, a fraction of treatments could not improve oil recovery as reported in the literature. In this …

This paper presents an improved theoretical damped single-axle vehicle-bridge dynamic interaction model to consider the effect of the contact patch size and motor-induced vehicle excitation. The contact patch issue is critical as it determines the minimum time step for simulation and maximum identifiable frequency, while the inclusion of the motor-induced vehicle excitation benefits the design of autonomous self-driven rather than towed vehicles. Estimations of the contact patch size for both the pneumatic tire and solid wheel scenarios are discussed. The contact patch responses, which degenerate into contact point responses when the contact patch size is assumed to be infinitely small, …

Insurance against disasters plays a critical role in community recovery by providing policyholders with reliable and timely payments for repairing or reconstructing damaged houses. By allowing homeowners to transfer risk, insurance enables homeowners to address house without experiencing significant financial burdens. Although historical events have highlighted the importance of insurance, its quantitative impact on community recovery, particularly in tornado-impacted communities, is understudied. This study focuses on advancing our understanding of whether sufficiently insured houses can have a positive impact on the recovery of tornado-impacted communities (i.e., the main research question). This paper proposes a two-stage simulation framework to quantitatively evaluate …

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) execute compute intensive control operations like adjusting speed and steering, causing significant energy dissipation and latency due to resource limited onboard units (OBUs). Offloading these tasks to Roadside Units (RSUs) is a solution, but it faces challenges. First, the stringent latency requirements are impacted by the vehicle's stochastic velocity. Second, allocating limited RSU resources to numerous vehicles within its coverage area is difficult. This paper proposes the MIME framework to address these issues. We use Discrete Fourier transform (DFT) that computes the average velocity over an aperiodic velocity signal extracted from a real-world dataset. for resource allocation, …
