Glove Compartment: Antedatings And The Ultimate (Albeit Indirect) Role Of Racing Driver Dorothy Levitt (1882-1922) In The Origin Of The Term, Gerald Leonard Cohen

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

At first glance it might seem the only thing to say about ‘glove compartment’ is that its original purpose was to hold gloves. And indeed, OED3 presents no discussion on the term, merely setting forth two attestations (1939, 1959). But questions do arise, e.g.,

1) Why was it so important to have gloves in the car?

2) If gloves served the practical purpose of preventing hands from numbing in cold weather, why is the first OED attestation so late?

3) Can any earlier attestations be found?

4) Can anyone be determined to have played a role in the naming of …

Using Convolutional Neural Network To Determine Time Window For Analyzing Local Shear-Wave Splitting Measurements, Yanwei Zhang, Stephen S. Gao

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The time window for analyzing local shear-wave splitting (SWS) phases significantly affects the quality of measurements, revealing a noteworthy domain influence. In this study, an approach using convolutional neural network (CNN) is applied to determine the end of time window (e), which has a similar idea of the phase-picking CNNs. The start of time window is 0.5 s before e. Our data set contains 803 human-labeled measurements, recorded from three stations located in Ridgecrest, California. These measurements are foreshocks and aftershocks of an M 7.1 earthquake on 6 July 2019. After 21 times shifting on each measurement, 90% of the …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dense, dual phase (Hf,Mo,Ti,W,Zr)B2–(Hf,Mo,Ti,W,Zr)C ceramics were synthesized with varying contents of Mo and W. The final (Hf0.317Mo0.025Ti0.317W0.025Zr0.317)C–(Hf0.317Mo0.025Ti0.317W0.025Zr0.317)B2 was a nominally pure, dual phase ceramic, while compositions with higher amounts of Mo and W contained multiple phases. The final microstructures had submicron grains due to pinning effects. Vickers hardness values were up to 48.6 ± 2.2 GPa for an applied load of 0.49 N for the ceramic with optimized composition and densification. The solubility limits for Mo and …

Breaking And Trapping Cooper Pairs By Rydberg-Molecule Spectroscopy In Atomic Fermi Superfluids, Chih Chun Chien, S. I. Mistakidis, H. R. Sadeghpour

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose a spectroscopic probe of the breaking and localization of Cooper pairs in an atomic Fermi superfluid interacting with a Rydberg impurity. This is achieved by monitoring the formation of diatomic and triatomic ultralong-range molecular species in the superfluid across the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover. The triatomic Rydberg molecule in the BEC regime heralds the trapping of a tightly bound Cooper pair, reminiscent of pion capture in nuclear matter, while the breaking of a Cooper pair on the BCS side by a diatomic Rydberg molecule is evocative of binary-star tidal disruption by a black hole. Spectroscopy of the …

Very-high-energy (0.1-100 TeV) gamma-ray emissions were observed in High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) data from the lobes of the micro quasar SS 433, making them the first set of astrophysical jets that were resolved at TeV energies. In this work, we update the analysis of SS 433 using 2565 days of data from the HAWC observatory. Our analysis reports the detection of a point-like source in the east lobe at a significance of 6.6σ and in the west lobe at a significance of 8.2σ. For each jet lobe, we localize the gamma-ray emission and identify a best-fit position. The locations are …

Context. Supernova remnants (SNRs) are believed to be capable of accelerating cosmic rays (CRs) to PeV energies. SNR G106.3+2.7 is a prime PeVatron candidate. It is formed by a head region, where the pulsar J2229+6114 and its boomerang-shaped pulsar wind nebula are located, and a tail region containing SN ejecta. The lack of observed gamma ray emission from the two regions of this SNR has made it difficult to assess which region would be responsible for the PeV CRs. Aims. We aim to characterize the very-high-energy (VHE, 0.1-100 TeV) gamma ray emission from SNR G106.3+2.7 by determining the morphology and …

The origin of high-energy galactic cosmic rays is yet to be understood, but some galactic cosmic-ray accelerators can accelerate cosmic rays up to PeV energies. The high-energy cosmic rays are expected to interact with the surrounding material or radiation, resulting in the production of gamma-rays and neutrinos. To optimize for the detection of such associated production of gamma-rays and neutrinos for a given source morphology and spectrum, a multimessenger analysis that combines gamma-rays and neutrinos is required. In this study, we use the MultiMission Maximum Likelihood framework with IceCube Maximum Likelihood Analysis software and HAWC Accelerated Likelihood to search for …

Anti-Corrosion Performance Of Magnesium Potassium Phosphate Cement Coating On Steel Reinforcement: The Effect Of Boric Acid, Fan Zhang, Jihui Qin, Kangyi Cai, John J. Myers, Hongyan Ma

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

It has recently been found that magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKPC) paste coating applied on the surface of steel reinforcement can effectively retard the onset of corrosion and suppress corrosion reactions. However, the fast-setting nature of MKPC—which is a merit in repair—can be problematic in a practical engineering process of coating the steel reinforcement with MKPC paste. To address this problem, boric acid (H3BO3) was added as a retarder in an MKPC formulation to prolong the setting time. This work investigated the impact of boric acid (at 5% by weight of MgO) on the anti-corrosion performance …

Circular Economy Integration In Leed: A Decade Of Materials And Resources Credit Achievement Patterns, Radwa Eissa, Islam H. El-Adaway

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Previous studies consistently label the Materials and Resources (MR) credit category of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) as the least attainable, despite its critical role in transitioning to a circular economy (CE). To this end, a long-standing gap exists in understanding the MR credit achievement, especially in LEED v4, which has been in use for nearly over a decade. This paper evaluates the level of CE integration in LEED v4 across 971 US-based certified projects. The study comprehensively analyzed the projects achievement patterns of the five MR credits: Building Life Cycle Impact Reduction (C1), Environmental Product Declarations …

Temperature Effect On The Properties And Response Of Composite Materials And Plates, Victor Birman

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The paper illustrates the effect of temperature on composite material properties and its influence on the response of composite plates. Two composites considered include laminae with uniaxially oriented and with in-plane randomly oriented fibers. Analytical solutions are presented for a uniformly heated large-aspect-ratio plate deforming into a cylindrical surface. The solutions are demonstrated for thermal buckling and natural frequencies for the cases of controlled loading and controlled displacements. Micromechanical residual and lifetime thermally induced stresses at the interface of fibers and matrix are assessed to predict a possible onset of local damage after the curing and during lifetime. The material …

Machine Vision To Provide Quantitative Analysis Of Meltpool Stability For A Coaxial Wire Directed Energy Deposition Process, Braden Mclain, Remy Mathenia, Todd Sparks, Frank Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Wire-based additive manufacturing (AM) is at the forefront of complex metal fabrication because of its scalability for large components, potential for high deposition rates, and ease of use. A common goal of wire directed energy deposition (DED) is preserving a stable process throughout deposition. If too little energy is put into the deposition, the wire will stub into the substrate and begin oscillating, creating turbulence within the melt pool. If too much energy exists, the wire will overheat, causing surface tension to take over and create liquid drips as opposed to a solid bead. This paper proposes a computer vision …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Combining CO2 capture and utilization into a single unit operation offers a feasible solution for converting a sustainable feedstock into marketable commodity chemicals, while reducing energy requirements from separated processes. In this research, we developed a process model and performed a techno-economic analysis (TEA) for point-source CO2 capture and electrochemical-based utilization in light olefins production under both separated and integrated scenarios. CO2 containing flue gas from a 500 MW power plant was utilized as a feed while CO2 utilization involved electrochemical reduction reactions to produce light olefins directly from CO2. A meticulous analysis was …

Reflections On Linear B, (Part 5): Linear B Sign 50 From Egyptian Hieroglyph For "Hair"?, Gerald Leonard Cohen

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

Linear B sign 50, pronounced /pu/, is almost identical to one of the Egyptian hieroglyphs for ‘hair,’ and the sign’s pronunciation /pu/ might have been taken from a Greek word connected with hair, viz., ampuks ‘headband.’ The headband was part of ancient Egyptian royal head-dress, and most importantly, it was worn by the goddess Maat to fasten an ostrich feather (symbol of truth, order, justice) to her head. A pattern taking shape for me is that several Linear B signs of Egyptian origin are connected with the Egyptian gods, and Linear B sign 50 may fit into this pattern.

Underrepresented minority (URM) faculty face challenges in many domains of academia, from university admissions to grant applications. We examine whether this translates to promotion and tenure (P&T) decisions. Data from five US universities on 1,571 faculty members' P&T decisions show that URM faculty received 7% more negative votes and were 44% less likely to receive unanimous votes from P&T committees. A double standard in how scholarly productivity is rewarded is also observed, with below-average h-indexes being judged more harshly for URM faculty than for non-URM faculty. This relationship is amplified for faculty with intersectional backgrounds, especially URM women. The differential …

Atmosphere Effects In Laser Powder Bed Fusion: A Review, Ben Brown, Cody Lough, Davis Wilson, Joseph Newkirk, Frank Liou

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of components fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) requires the development of processing parameters that can produce high-quality material. Manipulating the most commonly identified critical build parameters (e.g., laser power, laser scan speed, and layer thickness) on LPBF equipment can generate acceptable parts for established materials and moderately intricate part geometries. The need to fabricate increasingly complex parts from unique materials drives the limited research into LPBF process control using underutilized parameters, such as atmosphere composition and pressure. As presented in this review, manipulating atmosphere composition and pressure in laser beam welding has been shown to expand …

This study investigates the resistive switching characteristics of Ag nanoparticle (AgNP)-incorporated pectin (pectin-AgNP) as a memristive thin film, with varying concentrations of AgNP (0.0 wt.%, 0.5 wt.%, and 1.0 wt.%) and pectin (5.0 mg/L, 5.5 mg/L, 6.0 mg/L, 6.5 mg/L, and 7.0 mg/L), sandwiched between Au and indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes on glass substrate. The structural, chemical, and electrical properties of these pectin-AgNP thin films were evaluated. With AgNP concentration of 0.5 wt.% in a pectin concentration of 5.5 mg/mL, the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra indicated the highest presence of C–O bonds. This suggests the incorporation of AgNP …

The first TeV γ-ray source with no lower energy counterparts, TeV J2032+4130, was discovered by HEGRA. It appears in the third HAWC catalog as 3HWC J2031+415 and it is a bright TeV γ-ray source whose emission has previously been resolved as two sources: HAWC J2031+415 and HAWC J2030+409. While HAWC J2030+409 has since been associated with the Fermi Large Area Telescope Cygnus Cocoon, no such association for HAWC J2031+415 has yet been found. In this work, we investigate the spectrum and energy-dependent morphology of HAWC J2031+415. We associate HAWC J2031+415 with a γ-ray binary system containing the pulsar PSR J2032+4127 …

Multi-Step Ahead Water Level Forecasting Using Deep Neural Networks, Fahimeh Sharafkhani, Steven Corns, Robert Holmes

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Stream gauge height (water level) is a significant indicator for forecasting future floods. Flooding occurs when the water level exceeds the flood stage. Predicting imminent floods can save lives, protect infrastructure, and improve road traffic management and transportation. Deep neural networks have been increasingly used in this domain due to their predictive capabilities in capturing complex features and interdependencies. This study employs four distinct models—Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), transformer, and LSTNet—with MLP serving as the baseline model to forecast water levels. The models are trained using data from 20 distinct river gages across the state of Missouri …

Building on research identifying manipulative communication design (MCD) tactics, including clickbait and dark patterns, in the 2020 U.S. election, we analyzed the interface of political emails from the 2023 Kentucky gubernatorial contest between Andy Beshear (D) and Daniel Cameron (R). This extended abstract reports study results from a critical interface analysis of 291 emails to answer the question: How does political ideology influence the use of MCD tactics? Such tactics exploit cognitive biases to gain political advantage by maximizing the extraction of donations from supporters. Five MCD tactics were prominent in both campaigns (individualization and personalization, inverted authority appeals, political …

The intersections of power and conspiracy rhetorics represent complexities for scholars who seek to understand social engagement and its various discursive properties. Our study addresses these complexities through the lens of facial recognition technology (FRT), analyzing how conversations on the platform X (formerly Twitter) surrounding FRT mirror discourse in other places that have been called conspiracy theories. By gathering Tweets that contain discourse about FRT and coding them using features synthesized from previous literature, we work to understand the ways that populations express valid feelings of disenfranchisement through traditionally conspiratorial rhetorical tropes. Our results highlight the importance of traditionally conspiratorial …

Being assigned to teach unfamiliar content is an experience that many technical communication (TC) instructors can relate to. In this experience report, four TC instructors describe their experiences teaching unfamiliar and emerging technology, providing takeaways for readers about how they might approach similar tasks, particularly when constrained by a lack of time and resources when teaching a class for the first time. The instructors had to adapt their pedagogical approaches to teach a range of technology and software. These approaches include building students' visual and rhetorical literacy, diving deep into ethics, explicitly teaching students how to learn, and humbly showing …

Magnesium phosphate cement-based ultra-high-performance concrete (MPC-UHPC) develops strength rapidly but shows unsatisfactory ultimate strength (<150 >MPa). In this study, ultrafine fly ash (UFA) was incorporated in MPC-UHPC to improve mechanical properties. The effect of UFA content, varying from 0 % to 15 %, by weight of binder, on microstructure, fiber pullout behavior, mechanical strengths, flexural and tensile properties of MPC-UHPC reinforced with 2 vol% steel fibers was investigated. Experimental results indicate that the incorporation of 10 %–15 % UFA with mean particle size of 1.4 µm was effective in reducing porosity and microcracks of binder matrix and fiber–matrix interface, thereby …

Microquasars are laboratories for the study of jets of relativistic particles produced by accretion onto a spinning black hole. Microquasars are near enough to allow detailed imaging of spatial features across the multiwavelength spectrum. The recent extension measurement of the spatial morphology of a microquasar, SS 433, to TeV gamma rays1 localizes the acceleration of electrons at shocks in the jet far from the black hole2. V4641 Sagittarii (V4641 Sgr) is a similar binary system with a black hole and B-type main-sequence companion star and has an orbit period of 2.8 days (refs. 3,4). It stands …

Federated Learning (FL) is a distributed machine learning paradigm facilitating participants to collaboratively train a model without revealing their local data. However, when FL is deployed into the wild, some intelligent clients can deliberately deviate from the standard training process to make the global model inclined toward their local model, thereby prioritizing their local data distribution. We refer to this novel category of misbehaving clients as selfish. in this paper, we propose a Robust aggregation strategy for the FL server to mitigate the effect of Selfishness (in short RFL-Self). RFL-Self incorporates an innovative method to recover (or estimate) the true …

To investigate the three-dimensional spatial distribution of subducted oceanic slab segments and their consequential effect on the thermal and hydrous composition of the mantle transition zone (MTZ) beneath the entire Tibetan Plateau, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of approximately 655,000 P-to-s receiver functions (RFs), obtained from 735 broadband seismic stations. These RFs were utilized to delineate the 410 km (d410) and 660 km (d660) seismic discontinuities, which represent the upper and lower boundaries of the MTZ, respectively. The RFs were grouped within circular bins with a radius of 1 degree and stacked to image the discontinuities. The mean apparent depths …

TiO2/MXene heterostructure has garnered significant interest as a photocatalyst due to its large surface area and efficient charge carrier separation at the interface. However, current synthesis methods produce TiO2 without clear crystal faceting and often require complicated postprocessing step, limiting its practical applications. We demonstrate a facile and controlled microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis for transforming multilayered Ti3CN MXene to a truncated-bipyramidal TiO2/Ti3CN heterostructure. The resulting TiO2 nanocrystals at the Ti3CN surface exhibited crystalline anatase truncated bipyramids, exposing {001} and {101} facets. We further tailored an indirect optical band gap …
