Accelerating Shock-Driven Reactions In Metal Nanocomposites, Siva Kumar Valluri, Edward L. Dreizin, Dana D. Dlott Dec 2024

Accelerating Shock-Driven Reactions In Metal Nanocomposites, Siva Kumar Valluri, Edward L. Dreizin, Dana D. Dlott

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Metal powders are sought as energetic additives to conventional explosives. However, due to their sluggish reaction kinetics with external gaseous oxidizers, pure metals are replaced with metallic composites with intimately mixed condensed phase oxidizers prepared by arrested reactive milling (ARM). Such composites can be initiated by non-thermal, mechanical means; through shear mixing of fuel and oxidizer under a shock compressive load. Since the ARM preparatory technique allows for tuning multiple powder attributes such as fuel/oxidizer of interest, their degree of mixing, amount of oxidizer, particle porosity, among others, a parametric study is crucial in identifying suitable traits for fast reactions …

Hyperspectral Imaging For Temperature Measurements Of Hot Spots In Shocked Plastic-Bonded Explosives, Dhanalakshmi Sellan, Siva Kumar Valluri, Dana D. Dlott

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hot spots are formed when energetic microstructures are shocked, and they play a critical role in shock sensitivity. It is important to know both the time-dependent size and temperature of the hot spots, in order to generate a kinetic model to describe reaction growth in plastic-bonded explosives (PBX). Here we use a recently developed technique where PBX is fabricated in the form of a thin wafer, embedded within a transparent polymer binder, and shocked with a laser-launched flyer plate that produces pressures of about 30 GPa range. In this method, every crystal of the cyclotetramethylene-tetranitramine (HMX)-based PBX can be observed …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

High entropy alloys (HEAs) demonstrate high strength, thermal stability, and irradiation resistance, making them desirable for applications in nuclear reactors and other harsh environments. Many existing HEAs contain cobalt (Co), which makes them unsuitable for nuclear applications due to the long-term activation of Co. A previously studied Co-free alloy, (Fe0.3Ni0.3Mn0.3Cr0.1)88Ti4Al8, exhibits high strength but compromised ductility due to its network of brittle precipitates upon aging. This work investigates the formation mechanism and evolution of the precipitates, including L12 (Ni3Ti type, ordered face-centered cubic …

High-severity wildfires create heterogeneous patterns of vegetation across burned landscapes. While these spatial patterns are well-documented, less is known about the short- and long-term effects of large-scale high-severity wildfires on insect community assemblages and dynamics. Ants are bottom-up indicators of ecosystem health and function that are sensitive to disturbance and fill a variety of roles in their ecosystems, including altering soil chemistry, dispersing seeds, and serving as a key food resource for many species, including the federally endangered Jemez Mountain salamander (Plethodon neomexicanus). We examined the post-fire effects of the 2011 Las Conchas Wildfire on ant communities in the Valles …

Multiple And Nonexistence Of Positive Solutions For A Class Of Fractional Differential Equations With P-Laplacian Operator, Haoran Zhang, Zhaocai Hao, Martin Bohner

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Research about multiple positive solutions for fractional differential equations is very important. Based on some outstanding results reported in this field, this paper continues the focus on this topic. By using the properties of the Green function and generalized Avery–Henderson fixed point theorem, we derive three positive solutions of a class of fractional differential equations with a p-Laplacian operator. We also study the nonexistence of positive solutions to the eigenvalue problem of the equation. Three examples are given to illustrate our main result.

A New Reduced Basis Method For Parabolic Equations Based On Single-Eigenvalue Acceleration, Qijia Zhai, Qingguo Hong, Xiaoping Xie

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we develop a new reduced basis (RB) method, named as Single Eigenvalue Acceleration Method (SEAM), for second order parabolic equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The high-fidelity numerical method adopts the backward Euler scheme and conforming simplicial finite elements for the temporal and spatial discretizations, respectively. Under the assumption that the time step size is sufficiently small, and time steps are not very large, we show that the singular value distribution of the high-fidelity solution matrix U is close to that of a rank one matrix. We select the eigenfunction associated to the principal eigenvalue of the …

More than half of the world’s rivers dry up periodically, but our understanding of the biological communities in dry riverbeds remains limited. Specifically, the roles of dispersal, environmental filtering and biotic interactions in driving biodiversity in dry rivers are poorly understood. Here, we conduct a large-scale coordinated survey of patterns and drivers of biodiversity in dry riverbeds. We focus on eight major taxa, including microorganisms, invertebrates and plants: Algae, Archaea, Bacteria, Fungi, Protozoa, Arthropods, Nematodes and Streptophyta. We use environmental DNA metabarcoding to assess biodiversity in dry sediments collected over a 1-year period from 84 non-perennial rivers across 19 countries …

Environmental Health Of Wildland Firefighters: A Scoping Review, M. Bryan Held, Miranda Rose Ragland, Sage Wood, Amelia Pearson, Seth Wayne Pearson, Olivia Chenevert, Rachel Marie Granberg, Robin M. Verble

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background: Wildland firefighters are likely to experience heightened risks to safety, health, and overall well-being as changing climates increase the frequency and intensity of exposure to natural hazards. Working at the intersection of natural resource management and emergency response, wildland firefighters have multidimensional careers that often incorporate elements from disparate fields to accomplish the tasks of suppressing and preventing wildfires. Thus, they have distinctly different job duties than other firefighters (e.g., structural firefighters) and experience environmental health risks that are unique to their work. We conducted a systematic scoping review of scientific literature that addresses wildland firefighter environmental health. Our …

Geochemical Evidence Of Drying During The 4.2 Ka Event In Sediment Cores From The Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico, Derek K. Gibson, Jonathan Obrist-Farner, Alex Correa-Metrio, Alejandra Rodriguez-Abaunza, Carlos Castañeda-Posadas

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Tropical hydroclimate variability during the Middle and Late Holocene was investigated using geochemical indicators of local-scale precipitation and evaporation preserved in sediment cores from two sites in the Mexican Yucatán Peninsula. Scanning X-Ray fluorescence spectroscopy data show generally decreasing precipitation trends during the Early and Middle Holocene. During the transition between the Middle and Late Holocene, geochemical evidence of reduced watershed erosion and increased evaporation indicate that a centennial-scale drying event impacted the region between 4.3 and 4.0 ka (kilo-anum; thousand years before present). These findings suggest that the 4.2 ka drying event, which has been previously recorded in Europe, …

Esg Ratings In The Mining Industry: Factors And Implications, Mahelet G. Fikru, Jennifer Brodmann, Lili Eng, J. Andrew Grant

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

While previous research explores the relationship between ESG ratings, firm size, and financial outcomes, there is a lack of comprehensive analysis comparing multiple ESG ratings within the mining industry. This gap is crucial given the increasing focus on ESG in mining operations and its potential impact on company performance. Based on proprietary financial and ESG ratings data from 200 mining companies, this study investigates the relationship between two different ESG ratings and firm characteristics. We compare ESG-rated firms with unrated firms in terms of firm size, and financial performance indicators, and explore country-level patterns in ESG ratings. Findings reveal that …

Deep Learning For Bitcoin Price Direction Prediction: Models And Trading Strategies Empirically Compared, Oluwadamilare Omole, David Enke

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper applies deep learning models to predict Bitcoin price directions and the subsequent profitability of trading strategies based on these predictions. The study compares the performance of the convolutional neural network–long short-term memory (CNN–LSTM), long- and short-term time-series network, temporal convolutional network, and ARIMA (benchmark) models for predicting Bitcoin prices using on-chain data. Feature-selection methods—i.e., Boruta, genetic algorithm, and light gradient boosting machine—are applied to address the curse of dimensionality that could result from a large feature set. Results indicate that combining Boruta feature selection with the CNN–LSTM model consistently outperforms other combinations, achieving an accuracy of 82.44%. Three …

Expression recognition holds great promise for applications such as content recommendation and mental healthcare by accurately detecting users’ emotional states. Traditional methods often rely on cameras or wearable sensors, which raise privacy concerns and add extra device burdens. In addition, existing acoustic-based methods struggle to maintain satisfactory performance when there is a distribution shift between the training dataset and the inference dataset. In this paper, we introduce FacER+, an active acoustic facial expression recognition system, which eliminates the requirement for external microphone arrays. FacER+ extracts facial expression features by analyzing the echoes of near-ultrasound signals emitted between the 3D facial …

This paper investigates an innovative surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor developed on a side-polished multimode optical fiber core. The optical fiber was integrated into specifically designed 3-dimensional printed mold, where manual polishing of the fiber took place. Microsphere Photolithography (MPL) techniques was employed to pattern periodic nanoantenna arrays on the polished surface, incorporating multiple disk diameters at a fixed periodicity. Subsequent gold deposition/lift-off were carried out to transfer the pattern from the photoresist to the fiber core, resulting in highly periodic hexagonal closed pack (HCP) arrays of nano disks. These arrays can significantly enhance the SERS signal intensity compared to …

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Slopes are a crucial structure in open pit mines. Their design has implications on the economic, safety and environmental operation of the mining industry. Designing stable slopes can be challenging due to the complexities introduced by the stratigraphy and hydrology of the strata. With rising commodity costs and inflation rates, mining operating costs are increasing. Reducing operational costs is necessary for mining industries to remain competitive. While steepening the pit slope can decrease stripping materials and save money, it also increases the risk associated with slope surges. Therefore, optimizing slopes is crucial for both financial and safety reasons. Numerical models …

Density Effects On The Interferometry Of Efimov States By Modulating Magnetic Fields, G. Bougas, S. I. Mistakidis, P. Giannakeas

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dynamical association of Efimov trimers in thermal gases by means of modulated magnetic fields has proven very fruitful in determining the binding energy of trimers. The latter was extracted from the number of remaining atoms, which featured oscillatory fringes stemming from the superposition of trimers with atom-dimers. Subsequent theoretical investigations utilizing the time-dependent three-body problem revealed additional association mechanisms, manifested as superpositions of the Efimov state with the trap states and the latter with atom-dimers. The three atoms were initialized in a way to emulate a thermal gas with uniform density. Here, this analysis is extended by taking into account …

We investigate magneto-optical trap-loss spectroscopy of Rydberg excited Rb85 (66≤n≤68S1/2) atoms, placed inside a tailored microwave cavity. The cavity frequency at 13.053 GHz is in resonance with the 67S1/2→66P3/2 transition, inducing a ladder multiphoton microwave Rydberg absorption and emission. The observed spectra are modeled with an extended Jaynes-Cummings formalism that accounts for nonlinear multiphoton absorption from and emission into the cavity, the loss from the trap due to Rydberg excitation, and cavity imperfection. We calculate the average photons in each spectral feature and find evidence for fractional photon emission into the cavity modes within the loss spectra. The microwave cavity …

As a van der Waals (vdW) layered semiconductor material, lead iodide (PbI2) possessing a direct bandgap with strong photoluminescence emission in visible range has gained wide attention in applications of photonic and optoelectronic devices. Here, up conversion photoluminescence (UPL) in exfoliated PbI2 flakes is demonstrated at room temperature and elevated temperatures. The linear power dependence of UPL emission with 532 nm excitation suggests the one-photon involved multiphonon-assisted UPL emission process, which is revealed by the temperature-dependent UPL emission measurement. Meanwhile, the nonlinear power dependence of UPL emission with 561 nm excitation indicates the transition of UPL emission mechanism from linear …

Asphalt binder performance grades (PGs) are important metrics in designing pavements for effective transportation infrastructure. the PG system relies on the binder's stiffness and is determined through energy- and time-intensive physical testing. Physical properties, like stiffness, can also be determined by spin–lattice NMR relaxometry, a non-destructive chemical method. NMR relaxometry can quantify the molecular mobility of materials by determining relaxation times from exponential decays of excited nuclear magnetization. While relaxation times have been used to determine physical properties of materials, a quantitative relation to the PG grades of asphalt binder is yet to be established. in this study, T1 NMR …

The intricate nature of magnetism in uranium-based Kondo lattices is a consequence of correlations between U-5f and conduction electrons. Previously, the source of magnetism has been ascribed to either Mott physics or Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction, both of which are not fully applicable to uranium-based Kondo lattices. Using linearized quasiparticle self-consistent GW plus dynamical mean-field theory, we demonstrate a crossover from incoherent to coherent f-d Kondo cloud in the paramagnetic phase of UTe2, USbTe and USbSe. As the transition occurs, we observe an augmented f-d coherence and Pauli-like magnetic susceptibility, with a substantial frozen magnetic moment of U-5f persisting. We …
